0:08 welcome everyone adam the woo here has
0:08 the recording of this monday june 13th
0:11 2022 wearing an appropriate t-shirt
0:15 half of
0:17 dobby the house elf
0:19 face
0:21 from the
0:22 harry potter franchise
0:24 i am going
0:26 to hobbitview which is located really
0:29 close to the corner of
0:31 1300 east and downington avenue i have
0:34 parked on not a through street
0:37 and right off of the semi-busy
0:39 thoroughfare
0:41 is a legend of salt lake city
0:45 folklore in history
0:47 into a magical place of hobbitville
0:49 i will be going it is right
0:52 past that fence line and as always in
0:55 these adventures i'm inviting you to
0:58 join me he's a free elf
1:01 now i know an elf is not a hobbit
1:03 and
1:04 but it's the closest appropriate t-shirt
1:07 i had packed on this
1:10 journey that i have been on i have been
1:12 gone for a heck of a long time from
1:14 celebration florida
1:15 i'm in utah right now wearing a kind of
1:18 appropriate t-shirt for hobbinville join
1:21 me it's also rainy 55 degrees give or
1:24 take
1:25 wet and cool and crisp
1:28 shall you and the reason i parked on
1:30 that side road is because even though
1:32 visitors
1:33 are now welcome here on trails and
1:35 natural lands public lands
1:38 in salt lake city there is no parking
1:41 right here
1:42 in this area
1:44 so i had to park a just a city street
1:47 over now i was here probably about eight
1:49 or nine ten years ago
1:54 really did not document this
1:56 thoroughly
1:57 or in the proper fashion
1:59 so i am back to see what has changed now
2:01 these gates
2:02 are open as of right now but since the
2:05 last time i was here about a decade ago
2:08 they had closed it off
2:09 fenced it off locked it down and there
2:12 are even some rumors
2:14 that when people would try to jump over
2:16 the fence some of the caretakers of the
2:18 property
2:19 would run them off
2:21 in certain by certain means
2:24 i don't know if that's true and i i just
2:26 love stories and folklore like that
2:28 too low they build
2:30 who built beneath the stars
2:33 that is what is written on that concrete
2:35 slab
2:36 right here and you can see
2:38 people watching over the property this
2:40 is pretty exciting
2:42 to be wandering through here on a wet
2:44 cool crisp
2:47 utahian day
2:49 utah day
2:50 a day in utah
2:55 it's just going to be a casual video
2:57 a little walk through if you will
3:02 this is pretty neat
3:08 see god in the clouds or hear
3:08 him in the land
3:14 and you can really see why they refer to
3:15 this
3:16 or it was given the name hobbitville
3:19 because it looks like hobbits
3:22 lived here
3:23 and according to what i was reading
3:25 there were homes here and people did
3:27 live on this property
3:41 right here at allen park drive this is
3:41 now
3:42 just known as allen park you cannot
3:44 drive down this road
3:50 and certain areas you can't even get
3:51 over to like it looks like i can't walk
3:54 over there unless that gate is unlocked
3:57 even though there is a chair and a table
4:00 back there
4:02 just as i suspected
4:05 there's a lock on that one we'll not be
4:07 hopping over the fence
4:12 a little apartment complex right next
4:13 door
4:15 to where the hobbits resided
4:22 obviously lord of the rings
4:22 probably one of the most famous hobbit
4:24 tales
4:32 and then of course the hobbit
4:32 which i remember reading that i had like
4:34 a a book
4:36 when i was young of the hobbit even
4:38 before
4:39 the movies and all that there is a
4:41 peacock walking across the top of that
4:43 roof
4:44 look at that there's a peacock walking
4:45 across the top
4:47 of that roof up there
4:53 that is awesome
4:53 i think the rain really does add to the
4:55 ambiance of this
4:58 all nature is but art
5:09 i see there is a bench here can't i get
5:09 over to the bench
5:14 these new fences have been put up a very
5:14 beautiful rock fountain pond here
5:21 no water in it oh there's another
5:21 peacock over here
5:23 next to they were cones
5:39 do you have a hobbit name
5:39 do you embrace the hobbitisms
5:41 of this area
5:47 yeah you see some of the remnants down
5:47 here
5:49 what was once here some of the rock
5:51 formation the benches
5:53 it looks like it's been kind of sort of
5:55 mode
6:08 pretty fascinating
6:14 seems to be quite a few peacocks i've
6:14 already seen two
6:17 but there are
6:18 murmurings of others
6:21 in the area but one is perched right up
6:24 top there
6:26 right at the pinnacle you have chosen
6:28 the perfect spot
6:29 to roost
6:31 this archway is awesome
6:47 i do have to wonder what they're going
6:47 to do with this property
6:50 what makes me think that is so where the
6:52 fences are obviously
6:54 still part of the same park see there's
6:56 a port-a-potty there there's some
6:57 construction looks like there's been
6:59 some demolition
7:01 over there in the distance
7:03 and i i'm curious if they torn down
7:06 some of the former buildings
7:08 and if that's going to continue i hope
7:09 not because this is a pretty fantastic
7:11 place a magical place
7:15 i mean any place that hobbits lived
7:18 hope i almost just tripped on that
7:19 little speed hump there
7:24 okay this even has an address so this is
7:26 one three one eight
7:29 and one three two zero
7:31 so one three one eight was on the second
7:33 floor
7:37 look at the wood banisters leading up
7:39 the staircase there
7:40 i like the theming a lot
7:47 and it looks as if the door on the side
7:47 that wooden door
7:48 adjacent up the stairs
7:50 is completely open you'll be able to get
7:52 in there that's probably why
7:54 we decided to put the fences up
7:56 just to keep people from snooping around
8:00 going in where they're not supposed to
8:01 go in
8:05 a few other people just walking by out
8:07 there a lot of people walk through here
8:09 just to get a stroll
8:12 okay here's some sort of cage
8:16 possibly a pair it was down in there
8:18 and it's always nice when you see these
8:20 little placards these information
8:23 items
8:24 accomplishments of dr george allen
8:27 dr george allen is who we can thank for
8:30 this area
8:32 he is the one that created what is known
8:34 as hobbit land
8:40 the allens grew to family from two to
8:42 six
8:43 the allens purchased the eight acre
8:45 piece of land that allen sits on allen
8:47 park sits on originally farmland
8:51 they transformed their home into an
8:53 urban
8:55 oasis
9:02 he also helped establish the tracy o
9:02 aviary almost said the different word
9:05 the zoo and zoological society here in
9:08 the area and served as the president for
9:10 the sugar house chamber of commerce
9:13 and that is what this building is known
9:15 as
9:21 some call it the sugar house
9:21 where dr george allen
9:24 resided
9:30 there's another home up there
9:30 on the ledge of that
9:37 hill over there some more writings on
9:37 the concrete kind of tough to tell what
9:38 it says
9:40 something about
9:42 should something shall never
9:44 something something a tree
9:47 the raindrops falling on the umbrella
9:50 soothing sounds
10:04 the bird chirping in the distance
10:04 oh up on the roof
10:06 are three or four metal geese see if i
10:09 can zoom in on this
10:11 so you got the real bird up top there
10:13 the peacock but then you also have these
10:15 fake metal ones
10:27 oh there's a squirrel hello squirrely
10:28 coming over my way squirrel
10:30 hello there
10:31 come on over squirrel say hi
10:38 you recognize who's on my shirt it's
10:38 dobby the house elf he's a free elf
10:42 i thought that squirrel was gonna like
10:44 go over and say hi to dobby on my torso
10:50 i always like when animals squirrels and
10:52 stuff come up and say hi
10:55 up there there's a squirrel up there
10:56 it's the same one
10:58 there's a very friendly and
11:01 rambunctious squirrel
11:03 i see you squirrel
11:14 there's me in the
11:16 reflection of the window
11:21 man it'd be so cool to be able to go in
11:22 this house
11:30 but as stated of the other property
11:30 or the other home
11:32 there are
11:33 addresses so that's this is 1338
11:36 so probably a searchable address
11:40 there's a squirrel still up look at that
11:41 squirrel's going up the side of the roof
11:42 way up there
11:43 okay the squirrel just went into a hole
11:45 in the roof
11:47 the squirrel has gone in the house
11:48 inside a hole on top of the roof
11:51 and it appears as if there was a pool
11:57 adjacent to the sugar house
12:07 fall into disrepair but quite a piece of
12:10 history
12:31 i bet living here back in the day was
12:31 pretty dang awesome
12:33 you walk out of the house go over here
12:35 take a dip in the pool
12:54 a lot more standing here than i was
12:54 expecting i really expected not to be a
12:56 whole lot of
12:58 facades like this
13:00 but there's a lot to
13:02 look at and explore
13:04 this old metal fencing here
13:07 love this kind of stuff
13:10 see the foundation has buckled there
13:13 now this looks like something out of
13:14 wizard of oz and the tornado hit if i
13:16 just see the
13:17 wicked witch's feet down there
13:20 just kind of giving me those vibes
13:28 i'm really glad i brought this umbrella
13:28 it was like a hundred percent chance of
13:30 rain today so i grabbed the umbrella
13:31 well i was in my car
13:40 kind of backtracking a bit because i
13:40 missed all this
13:48 oh my gosh this is a bridge down here
13:49 a decayed falling in bridge
13:53 with the address 1343
13:57 leading up to a cabin a desolate
14:06 cabin back there
14:06 wow
14:11 remnants of hobbitville
14:16 look at that bridge going over the river
14:27 and this was a real neighborhood at one
14:27 time
14:29 cars would drive through here you still
14:31 see where it says slow please
14:37 back around to that
14:37 that home and this
14:38 has lost its head
14:41 this concrete animal has no noggin
14:44 anymore
14:46 the noggin
14:47 is gone now sometimes when a horseshoe
14:49 is upside down or right side up it is
14:52 either lucky or unlucky when it's above
14:54 a door frame
14:55 this is kind of sidewise
14:57 so it's up for
14:59 opinion on whether that's lucky or
15:01 unlucky looking at this pool now i am
15:03 not a skater
15:04 i mean i could get on a skateboard i
15:06 could kind of hold my own going straight
15:07 but i can't really jump off of anything
15:09 or you know do any tricks or anything
15:11 like that
15:13 you know i had a bad experience on a
15:14 bike going down a slide once it would
15:16 probably end even worse if i was to take
15:18 a skateboard in that pool plus
15:21 it is frowned upon it even says right
15:24 here no skateboarding because the first
15:25 impression
15:27 anyone who's proficient on a board would
15:29 have would be like that would be a
15:31 really awesome skate spot
15:34 oh to see this one
15:36 upside down
15:38 this one right side up
15:45 seeing this back in his heyday or being
15:45 here would have been pretty dang awesome
15:48 there is a deer oh my gosh
15:50 there's a deer over here okay i'm zoomed
15:52 way in but there are two deer
15:55 look at that two wild deer
15:57 oh that is amazing that deer is eating
16:02 a piece of foliage
16:04 both the deers it's a steer coming over
16:06 my way
16:08 the deer just made eye contact with okay
16:11 the deer hears me talking
16:16 hey dear
16:16 i don't know if that deer is going to
16:17 make its way over here if it's just have
16:19 a little snack
16:21 okay the deer hears
16:23 the peacock
16:33 i'm very friendly here
16:33 i might get a little closer okay here
17:24 i don't know what to do i've never
17:24 experienced this before
17:26 i don't know if this is
17:32 if they approach what should i do i mean
17:32 but imagine they're friendly but i don't
17:34 know i'm not
17:35 an expert on deers
18:02 this isn't
18:02 so freaking cool
18:05 okay you going away dears
18:07 okay they're gone oh my gosh that was
18:10 awesome
18:15 i'm gonna be thinking about that for a
18:15 while that was that was like a magic
18:17 moment
18:18 might not seem much or translate much to
18:20 video but being that close to those
18:22 beautiful creatures just wandering
18:24 through the woods
18:25 making eye contact with them is pretty
18:28 there's another one of the old homes
18:29 older buildings down there
18:37 i just noticed my camera was on a weird
18:37 setting so it might have been kind of
18:39 kind of washed out a little bit but i
18:40 think i got it corrected
18:42 might not be too noticeable but
18:44 i did notice and change one of the
18:45 settings so should be
18:47 back to its usual
18:52 usual look now
18:52 so it was a little washed out before
18:54 that's why
18:55 but i have
18:56 corrected it
18:59 you've
19:00 always been the caretaker
19:03 i was so excited by the deer
19:05 if i wasn't paying attention to any of
19:07 the settings were correct
19:09 i must have like
19:10 turned it with my thumb or finger
19:11 without noticing
19:13 it could all just could just all be in
19:14 my mind too it might not have been
19:15 noticeable
19:27 and this creek also has a history as
19:27 well
19:29 the early 1800s building boom
19:30 prominently the extraction of red and
19:32 white sandstone in this canyon an
19:35 electric railway system was in salt
19:37 installed
19:38 in 1907.
19:46 a little waterfall down there
19:46 they have sealed off the well the
19:48 wishing well
19:49 whenever i see a well i always
19:51 want to throw a quarter or coin in there
19:52 and get the snow white vibes
19:57 that looks like snow white's wishing
20:04 obviously the one at disneyland
20:04 only goes down a few feet and there's a
20:05 grate over that one probably goes way
20:07 down
20:08 into the ground very unsafe if that was
20:10 open if you were to fall into that
20:19 okay this fireplace says mary rose
20:19 on the side of it
20:25 and it looks to be an outdoor fireplace
20:25 as well as an indoor
20:27 that's interesting the fireplace
20:30 is on the outdoor
20:32 of 1401 allen park also
20:35 is a bird sanctuary in the city
20:39 well maybe not almond park but allen
20:41 park has some information about a bird
20:43 sanctuary
20:45 being in the city you could see some
20:47 cedar wax wings some cooper hawks
20:51 cooper's hawks
20:52 and maybe even a european european
20:55 starling
20:57 out here probably on a
20:59 much less drizzly and sunnier day
21:02 they're probably all nested up right now
21:04 an entire housing development
21:07 now behind a new fence off limits
21:10 to visitors but
21:12 it is a city park and you are allowed to
21:14 walk where i am walking which
21:16 for many years
21:18 was not allowed
21:23 i am thankful to be able to traverse
21:23 through here
21:33 and have reached what looks to be like
21:33 the end of the development hobbitville
21:36 into a cul-de-sac a roundabout
21:39 here at this end
21:42 the very unique
21:45 item here in the middle
21:50 this rain on my camera is probably not
21:50 healthy for the
21:52 for the equipment i'm using but
22:04 as you walk the quiet paths of allen
22:04 park you will find dozen of concrete
22:05 monuments
22:07 and set with mosaic artwork dr allen
22:09 created these in his later years sharing
22:12 his passion for poetry with the visit
22:13 with his visitors aha
22:16 according to his daughter mary rose that
22:18 was her house with the fireplaces said
22:20 mary rose
22:22 they'd find discarded tile in local tile
22:25 stores dumpsters
22:26 and they would use that
22:29 to put the wording
22:30 on the mosaic poetry
22:36 i love that
22:36 a rendition of a guy holding a fish with
22:39 a very unique hat on
22:42 1436.
23:30 see the wires up there where the lamp
23:30 used to be
23:32 kind of protruding out of the top of
23:33 that metal pipe 1419 has a sphere in
23:38 front by the staircase
23:46 also some deer
23:46 on the sign that says 1419 there's also
23:48 these pots of these little bowls around
23:51 that are placed here
23:52 possibly for the peacocks possibly for
23:54 the deer
23:56 maybe other animals but they are kind of
23:58 scattered around too the caretaker
24:01 leaving food and
24:03 water or other substances out for
24:05 for the animals to eat which is nice
24:51 or possibly just a little rock wall to
24:51 keep people from
24:52 falling down over there into the water
24:54 which is behind this little poem
24:57 and there's another look at that bridge
24:59 another bridge that leads over to a
25:00 house that is unaccessible at the moment
25:02 wooden bridge
25:04 tucked away back there over the river
25:06 used to be a garden of some sort but the
25:08 painted rocks there
25:10 entryway to the garden
25:12 through that and then a couple seats
25:16 in fact you can kind of make out the
25:18 words here saying something about a
25:20 garden
25:29 or concrete
25:29 poetic sag
26:11 oh that peacock is still perched up
26:12 there look at that
26:13 peacock has not moved and here's another
26:16 damaged archway
26:18 leading down these stairs
26:21 little fake relics of these
26:23 concrete stairs and you got like some
26:26 sort of archway here that could have
26:28 gone up and over and then connected back
26:31 with this piece
26:32 of the archway these stairs would have
26:34 gone down to the stream down there
26:47 the sugar house behind me
26:47 probably would have been a good place
26:49 for a house elf
26:51 however
26:53 dobby is free
27:21 nice meeting you and your dear friends
27:21 too
27:40 there is an etiquette when in allen park
27:40 allen park is home to unique artworks
27:42 historical structures and wild birds
27:45 use quiet voices allow others to enjoy
27:47 the nature sounds
27:49 walk your bicycle
27:52 lock it at the front of the property
27:54 look and take pictures
27:56 that do not touch
27:58 like no dogs are allowed
28:05 close to dogs
28:05 there was a council meeting on july 20th
28:08 doesn't have a year
28:10 but said no more dogs
28:19 peacocks are allowed though and that's
28:21 gonna do it for today
28:23 again
28:24 a little bit different type of video a
28:26 rainy overcast
28:28 wet dreary cold 50 degrees here in salt
28:31 lake city
28:33 day
28:34 exploring hobbitville
