who would guess that a fantastic
0:03
roadside attraction used to sit right
0:06
over there across the street here in the
0:09
valley of Los Angeles in Southern
0:11
California here directly behind me as an
0:16
extension back in 1941 when John Eve
0:21
took over the premises and built his
0:24
Lodge he was known as the old trapper
0:28
his friends called him ot for short and
0:33
he had a fantastic plethora an array of
0:36
figures that he placed outside of the
0:39
establishment where people lived and
0:42
stayed right here San Fernando and our
0:49
Vela Avenue quite a bit of barbed wire
0:53
is now in place where the old trapper
0:56
lodge used to sit doing a little
1:01
scouring online found a web site by Wes
1:04
Clark who had an overview of the general
1:08
premise us you can see just how
1:09
expansive it really was down here
1:13
towards this direction is the roadway so
1:18
basically what you're looking at there
1:25
some planes taking off
1:27
the photograph I showed those statues
1:30
and sculptures are listed there but it
1:33
went way back a hundred and fifty
1:36
accommodations for those who felt like
1:39
staying on site after ochi passed away
1:42
in 1981 and his wife about a year or so
1:46
after they did not know what they were
1:48
gonna do with all the artifacts luckily
1:51
they were moved for bit of a ways from
1:54
here about a 30 minute drive everything
1:58
train coming by take you over to where
2:11
they now reside inviting you to join me
2:16
by the way here's a photograph of John
2:19
the old trapper and by lining up that
2:23
guide map it means those figures and
2:27
himself would have been standing right
2:30
here and he always dressed the part
2:41
quite fashionable certain you've heard
2:41
of route 66 they'll be confused this was
2:45
on route 99
2:48
circa 1926 to 1963 this paperwork was
2:52
published publicly trying to rile up
2:55
interest on where they could be could
2:59
find a new home
3:00
this gives the specifics of not only the
3:04
lodge but also Boot Hill some of the
3:06
artifacts
3:07
so the tinier items are now in inside
3:11
museums in Northern California but not
3:14
the sculptures they're still in SoCal
3:19
because of the inheritance taxes and the
3:22
expansion of the airport the family of
3:25
John is forced to divest themselves of
3:28
the 2.6 acres of land which includes the
3:31
California state landmark 932 the lodge
3:36
shows it here where that star is and the
3:39
arrow going upward and continue on
3:42
however about 24 25 mile commute
3:47
westward appears College
3:54
tucked away around the back of the
3:57
premises it's best if you want to visit
3:59
the show up during daylight hours these
4:02
gates are most likely closed and locked
4:04
in the evening you can see the padlock
4:08
there it's also extremely windy with all
4:12
these tumbleweeds there just piled up
4:15
against the fence
4:16
very very windy today horses out
4:25
enjoying the day
4:28
do not put fingers in the stall or feed
4:33
them you can have an allergic reaction
4:36
they're on a strict diet we're worried
4:42
about the finger thing looks like you're
4:47
enjoying the meal oh don't let me
4:49
disturb you
4:55
I know it's kind of awkward when I was
4:55
putting a camera while you're eating
4:57
okay there you go
5:07
it's a good Alvin Cleveland have Alvin
5:07
Cleveland park dedicated january 1969
5:11
having trouble speaking at the moment
5:21
well this is where this is where all the
5:21
statues are now located the sheer size
5:30
of these is what is very impressive you
5:34
would think it's just like a normal size
5:35
now that guy's eight feet tall at least
5:38
in legal mark man I'm a large man now
5:46
I've heard if you look up in here the
5:48
unusual thing about this some say real
5:51
teeth were used if you look in there
5:55
would you say those are real teeth if
6:00
real teeth are made of cement I think
6:03
are they I don't think so I don't okay
6:07
they're very well well done you're
6:11
ruining the urban legend it's so
6:13
realistic with true that it looks that
6:16
real that lifelike it's a little
6:19
off-putting I accidentally asked his met
6:22
for directions earlier before you got
6:24
here what was his response that look
6:28
with the real teeth he just gave you
6:30
that real teeth either had one eye
6:31
little light blue I think he's got this
6:34
holster down here there's gone he's
6:36
left-handed
6:46
you know why these were made yes
6:46
never heard of claude bell log bill yes
6:50
the cab of famous for Cabazon dinosaurs
6:52
famous from not to bury for sure so he
6:55
hired John een hired Claude Bell to
6:58
produce statues similar to this and
7:01
after he saw him work he said I could do
7:04
that myself to promote my watch
7:06
turns out by the evidence here he was
7:09
wrong it's kind of hidden in the shadows
7:11
here in the foliage wipe it off like
7:17
Indiana Jones number nine thirty nine it
7:25
is eigh National well not Nash yet it's
7:28
no California landmarks are not national
7:30
just statewide
7:37
here's another photograph of the man
7:37
himself John here almost disguised as
7:40
the sculptor's but that is that is him
7:45
there on the left and these are the
7:48
sculptures that used to be another spot
7:49
now here at Pierce College modeled after
7:53
his friends and family members thank you
7:58
for holding that the the gusts are very
8:01
prominent so right there that's what it
8:05
looks like modern-day compared to the
8:07
photograph there's a shovel a pick axe
8:16
the weapon of choice is a Colt Colt 45
8:20
without the devlins the derringer it's
8:22
very small and a festive pop in the cold
8:25
derringer I don't know a lot about
8:32
weapons but I know Cole and I think of
8:34
Colt I think of 45 but Colt 45 is a fear
8:38
these now say this is very reminiscent
8:41
of what you see when you go through
8:42
ghost town at Knott's Berry Farm created
8:45
by Claude Bell this is oaties version
8:47
the old trappers very very similar where
8:52
you sit in between the two the two
8:55
statues and get a photo-op
8:58
you don't have to listen too closely you
9:00
just can hear the wind rustling through
9:03
the trees
9:27
even has the family's name mrs. and mr.
9:27
they're inscribed at the base of this
9:32
one iron foot Eva passed away on her
9:41
wedding day by unknown part of the gundy
9:46
shop some of these relics
9:57
very interesting moonflower exotic
9:57
briscoe beauty danced her way to Boot
10:00
Hill this gentleman has a very very
10:03
large feet
10:15
here's a sign from the old location and
10:15
this is Boot Hill who recreated at many
10:18
attractions could be if not the most
10:23
popular one of the most common
10:26
graveyards that you will find when it
10:29
comes to theming with clever little
10:32
headstones this is just swinging there
10:35
in the breeze it's attached to that limb
10:39
right up top
10:42
pegleg Smith
10:48
oh it's a fight there's a battle ensuing
11:01
some of these by today's social
11:01
standards probably would not fly
11:11
but it is history nonetheless looking
11:11
down Boothill from the top of the hill
11:17
big-nose now according to the heavy
11:22
rumor which a lot say is true it never
11:25
been fully documented claude bell would
11:29
have created possibly this one which was
11:33
a likeness of OT right up there holding
11:40
his weapon this tree has been uprooted
11:43
and fallen
12:04
serious business taking place up there
12:04
their faces
12:25
the detail on those faces
12:25
lurking in the shadows I had to kind of
12:32
cut this visit short some workers showed
12:34
up there they're gonna be redoing the
12:37
the pavement and the sidewalks to make
12:39
it more accessible for future visitors
12:41
made it a few miles away over to Prince
12:43
delicatessen and restaurant and the
12:46
smell just wafting out of there is
12:50
rather appealing I already grabbed us a
12:56
table good this is good
12:59
you have to pickle start at our attic
13:01
I've eaten quite a bit of like Hollywood
13:09
history here on the walls you know it's
13:11
not in North Hollywood history second
13:15
Center Hollywood valance is actually in
13:18
Northridge Northridge Northridge which
13:21
is actually
13:27
well it's San Fernando Valley to speak
13:27
Los Angeles is bisected by Hills right
13:31
across the middle and on this side let
13:33
me try to do it the right way we have
13:35
market hollywood west hollywood beverly
13:38
hills
13:39
let's down Santa Monica splash splash
13:43
that's the ocean okay I gotcha over this
13:47
side of the hill
13:49
Studio City Sherman Oaks Encino Woodland
13:54
Hills Calabasas splash but above here
13:57

14:08
appear Northridge the whole new Cal
14:11
State University Northridge the Matadors
14:15
thank you so this is what they're known
14:17
for
14:18
okay you doing the spin do not need the
14:22
music so they might have big that might
14:24
that star tracker Oh was I sorry I think
14:26
you do a star track to another one just
14:30
make that up okay that's good they said
14:34
they were known for this this is the
14:36
Reuben what type of Reuben is this
14:38
pastrami and looks like there's some
14:40
sauerkraut on there and you win with you
14:45
went with this turkey club rap turkey
14:47
club rap there's Judge Judy Andre Agassi
14:55
and Chuck Norris Judge Judy ate here and
14:59
Chuck Norris oh and I once saw them in
15:02
the most unbelievable spider jumps in
15:10
the air and there was actually something
15:18
that's amazing story they sell these
15:18
bagel chips
15:20
as well you take these home bagel chips
15:42
they are very helpful here the lady on
15:42
the golf cart showing me the way to the
15:45
mausoleum
16:02
this is Johnny that his wife was a year
16:02
later she died I believe was on their
16:05
anniversary year separated Mary's face
16:11

16:16
devotion she's 13
16:22
Johnny Howard had never found this on my
16:34
own
16:34
