Most Important Barn In Hollywood / The Story & Locations Of Lasky-DeMille Studio Museum
A visit to the Hollywood Heritage Museum to not only see what's on display but to focus on the history of the building . Felt it only fitting to dig a little deeper into the original locations the barn stood before heading in.

today's adventure brings us to this
0:02
parking lot just outside the Hollywood
0:05
Bowl in Southern California and this
0:08
barn established in 1913 holds a heck of
0:15
a lot of history because this is the
0:17
site of the very first Cecil B DeMille
0:23
movie and some say the location of the
0:27
first movie ever shot in Hollywood
0:31
full-length shot in Hollywood
0:35
dun dun dun da da da welcome everyone
0:38
Adam the woo here before I wander across
0:42
the pavement and inside those walls take
0:46
you around town and show you a little
0:47
backstory a little history of some of
0:51
the other spots where this barn once sat
0:55
and leading up to where it currently
0:59
resides and then after that we'll step
1:03
inside join me
1:06
shall you about a mile and a half where
1:09
it currently resides heading over to its
1:13
original location on the corner of Selma
1:16
Avenue and Vine Street way before that
1:20
Trader Joe's came to town on this very
1:25
corner at the equinox complex the Camden
1:29
apartments is where it's at in that
1:33
precise spot if you were standing where
1:36
I am looking in the same direction back
1:37
in the day you would have seen some
1:40
classic cars also on that corner and not
1:44
only did the structure end up being
1:47
removed but those trees also had been
1:50
replaced over the years looks as if
1:52
they're shooting something over there as
1:53
we speak
1:54
I guess some things never change
1:57
tucked away in the courtyard area this
2:00
angle from the backside of the barn
2:03
take a look closely at this structure
2:06
here with its fire escapes and the
2:10
architecture at the tippy top of the
2:12
building that is still there
2:22
fire escapes and that unique roofline
2:22
standing a few feet from the pinpointed
2:24
exact spot however because this building
2:27
would block our view it's pretty cool to
2:30
match all that up and to think that it
2:33
originally was sitting right there the
2:37
group of people from the production move
2:39
so I was able to cross the road and
2:41
stand here I cannot move any further to
2:44
the right however but you can match up
2:47
this you can see some faint buildings on
2:52
the far left corner and those also are
2:56
still here today but this is it I'm
2:59
standing I'm standing right where it was
3:02
as time went on in the production
3:04
facilities grew at Lasky Studios
3:07
stretched all the way down the block to
3:09
Vine Street there's now a bank here but
3:13
also in front of this fountain is this
3:15
plaque on the ground and time capsule
3:18
designating the history it looks as if
3:20
they're gonna crack the ground open in
3:23
2037 and we'll finally be able to see
3:27
what's been buried here
3:34
makes you wonder general layout of the
3:34
land before it was bulldozed bottom
3:36
corner selma and vine right there the
3:40
only structures that were moved before
3:43
its demolition is the barn and that time
3:46
capsule right on the corner of sunset
3:49
and vine at that fountain and bank
3:51
that's what you're looking at there
3:53
artistic rendering when it was on the
3:55
corner of selma and vine funny to think
3:58
if it was still there current day they
4:01
could just walk out the front door and
4:02
go to Trader Joe's but it was moved all
4:06
these extras waiting on the street
4:08
corner trying to get a role look at the
4:12
way the cross streets were designated
4:14
there's little wooden signs no traffic
4:18
lights back then
4:24
just a ways away as paramount studios
4:24
where it's at for many many years right
4:28
here just to our left I was to walk up
4:32
any closer you would not see that iconic
4:35
Hollywood sign directly through the
4:38
archway not too bad with the palm trees
4:41
there in frame an the water tower as
4:45
well speaking of that water tower that
4:48
you can see just above that hedge line
4:51
there it is you can see the base of what
4:56
held it up in the air and there's the
5:00
barn
5:08
right below that was its new home for a
5:08
time being documented amongst the old
5:10
western sets in fact you could see it in
5:13
a couple TV episodes from Bonanza and
5:16
that's it right there
5:17
sitting kind of caddy corner to the
5:20
building to its right and as best I can
5:23
tell they shifted it on one occasion it
5:27
used to run perpendicular to this long
5:29
building I'm closing in on and for one
5:33
reason or another they turned it to that
5:36
angle wonder why see here it is running
5:39
along the length of that wall on the
5:42
building beside it completely different
5:44
than what I just showed you from the
5:46
Bonanza era file on this side it was
5:49
used for storage and as a gymnasium and
5:53
there's mr. DeMille standing in front of
5:55
the door but alas things change and
5:58
progress always wins in the end so now
6:02
we're heading two miles to the next spot
6:05
it sat in this parking lot next to the
6:07
Capitol Records building with a fence
6:09
around it no one could visit it's just
6:12
falling into disrepair and decay you
6:15
have to wonder if the employees up on
6:16
the top floor we're curious about what's
6:19
at at the base of their building
6:30
yeah I think that's
6:30
I think that's about it
6:37
nailed it thankfully since then it has
6:37
been preserved and placed on display for
6:39
all to see which takes me to the very
6:42
last spot the most in-depth location
6:46
which is where I started this video from
6:48
so we're basically going to be going
6:50
full circle I'll see you there
6:53
under the cooling beautiful shade of
6:55
these trees amongst the picnic tables
6:59
there it is
7:05
the Lasky DeMille barn Hollywood
7:05
heritage museum and there is plenty of
7:09
information outdoors built in 1901 for
7:14
agricultural use in 1912 it was adapted
7:18
for the motion picture production here
7:22
in town this I could be seen in a movie
7:24
by the name of the Rainmaker
7:27
reconstructed in the 50s after it became
7:31
a California State Historic Landmark
7:35
circa 1927 that's what it looked like
7:40
pretty much the same accepts the front
7:43
porch has been added on this placard was
7:47
placed on the wall dedicated in 56 and
7:50
these three gentlemen from left to right
7:53
Cecil B DeMille Jesse L Lasky and Samuel
7:58
Goldwyn and some big names for sure
8:01
still mounted right here on site I found
8:05
another another picture of the guys
8:08
around it
8:10
pretty cool right Adolph Zukor who was
8:13
one of the business partners was also
8:15
here for the dedication he was
8:18
photographed walking along side of the
8:20
structure just about in here I'm
8:25
standing basically where the
8:26
photographer would have taken the
8:28
picture this one blows my mind here's
8:30
DeMille directing the water scene from
8:33
ten commandments on the Paramount wat
8:35
and look at the roof line behind him the
8:41
freakin Ten Commandments
8:48
pretty pretty freakin cool by climbing
8:48
this concrete staircase get a pretty
8:51
good view of the backside now when it
8:54
was on Selma Avenue its original spot
8:57
there's some good photos of the cast and
9:00
crew from the Man around the
9:03
backside from this angle it's time I
9:06
never been in here before I'm ready
9:09
let's do this
9:10
1928 before being turned into a gym I
9:15
can't go in that way I got to go through
9:19
the front February fifteenth nineteen
9:21
eighty-three you can see it being moved
9:23
along the surface streets of LA
9:27
check this out inside is the office of
9:30
director DeMille
9:32
there's his megaphone picture of his
9:35
wife up there some old checks
9:46
and his shoes doubt here the Selma
9:46
address is still inscribed on the top of
9:49
the door this would have been the
9:50
entryway to his office and this was the
9:53
original sign out front before it was
9:57
designated a historical landmark
10:00
this model designates the the courtyard
10:03
they're going along Selma and onto Vine
10:08
Street things have changed
10:32
props from King of Kings and the
10:32
Crusades and over here part of the
10:37
lion's head and wardrobe from the actors
10:41
ten commandments on loan from an
10:45
organization that did a dig out in the
10:48
desert and found relics from the movie
10:55
Wow
10:55
this chest is visible and one of the
10:58
scenes as well there's an arrow
11:00
designating the spot right there
11:10
that's some serious movie history a bust
11:10
of Jesse al laski pioneer producer and
11:15
it's not just relating to the same theme
11:18
of items that are in here there are a
11:21
lot of other artifacts this chair from
11:24
1915 the cheat and once again there's a
11:28
arrow designating where you can see it
11:32
usually these two are quite a bit more
11:35
lively must be tired today must be must
11:39
be tuckered out loading that camera onto
11:42
the high boom to get the aerial shots
11:45
and Gone with the Wind the burning of
11:48
Atlanta scenes were shot on this very
11:51
camera painting down the air of what I'm
11:53
currently wandering and standing inside
11:56
of and that's Buster Keaton and this
12:00
camera was used and belonged to him
12:02
quite a few exhibits from the silent
12:05
film era because the Man was in
12:07
fact a silent movie but I loved the
12:11
ceiling and a roofline that is still
12:14
visible kind of gives you that
12:17
old-school back-in-the-day feel when the
12:20
director calls for action you best get
12:23
moving because if not he might yell a
12:25
little louder and blow out and hear drum
12:28
behind this case Douglas Fairbanks
12:30
seniors outfit and the iron mask I was
12:34
having a hard time deciphering what this
12:36
model represented as far as which one of
12:38
the studios this was so I had to ask
12:41
and they said this is basically just a
12:43
generic interpretation a mishmash if you
12:47
will of all the different ones but
12:49
basically how the old Studios around
12:51
here used to look for example you'd have
12:54
a Old West set it's just out of eyeshot
12:58
of the production buildings and the art
13:01
department and a plank among desert
13:04
rocks could be on the opposite side of a
13:07
parking lot movie magic Rome like ruins
13:12
next to the snow of winter and even some
13:17
sailboats all on the same property and
13:19
just like in a real production set they
13:22
only paint and display what the camera
13:25
needs to see so the back end is left
13:28
untouched one thing you don't think
13:30
about are the lights that will be
13:31
shining on you when you're an actor
13:33
about trying to to deliver your lines
13:36
with this thing beaming in your eyes it
13:39
is pretty neat to be indoors and see
13:41
things from the opposite angle these
13:43
doors from so many historical photos of
13:46
this place or the windows up top it's
13:51
pretty neat to be in here I'm glad they
13:53
restored it and it's open to the general
13:55
public that's gonna do it for today if
13:58
