0:02 today's adventure begins with leaves
0:02 falling from the trees
0:05 from this tree and some birdhouses
0:08 as the recording of this it is Thursday
0:11 March 23rd 2023
0:16 the town of Bluffton or someone in the
0:19 backyard has a quite the fire going
0:21 around there you can hear it crackling
0:23 in the distance oh yeah you can see it
0:25 back there
0:27 off in the corner welcome everyone
0:30 out of the woo here still on a family
0:32 vacation at Hilton Head Disney's Hilton
0:34 Head Island Resort my dad and I have
0:38 decided to venture off
0:40 away from the rest of the family mom is
0:41 at the pool my aunt and uncle have gone
0:43 to the beach
0:45 and we are just going to walk around the
0:46 little small town on the outskirts of
0:48 the island Bluffton or bluffington
0:50 Bluffton Bluffton Bluffton that's no
0:54 bluffing
0:58 we have no idea what we're doing here we
0:58 just decided to get off the island but
1:01 we're doing it well
1:08 we passed a little store on the way in
1:08 there's a lot of nostalgia here from
1:10 what we could tell the driving end so we
1:12 parked and we're just gonna hoof it
1:13 around and see what we can find here and
1:16 from there who knows how the rest of the
1:17 day is going to go hoofing around
1:18 Bluffton join us
1:21 shall you
1:23 Ash
1:25 good job
1:27 now neither dad or myself are an expert
1:30 on Bluffton
1:32 thankfully there is this
1:34 guide map tour that we picked up at the
1:37 resort
1:38 in fact Mike the pool guy at Disney's
1:42 Hilton Head Island was very helpful with
1:44 telling us some stuff and Mike gave us
1:46 this so we're all Calhoun Street we're
1:49 on Calhoun Street okay so we just got to
1:52 find the map here on the May River find
1:54 Calhoun Street and then we can just
1:56 figure out what some of the I don't see
1:58 Calhoun there it is oh it's right there
2:02 24 23 22 right there all right
2:06 so we'll just kind of use this as like a
2:08 little way out of the land all right
2:11 just reading off of the information
2:13 this is Pat's brother's house
2:19 Pat's brother's house name for two
2:19 brothers that were from Baltimore that
2:21 moved here and they live right next to
2:23 the Planters Mercantile
2:26 which was that building right there
2:28 so that used to be a Mercantile
2:31 here in town
2:37 yeah it does kind of look like a store
2:37 storefront
2:38 and then this was the brother's house
2:41 they said it was made like two Mirror
2:43 Image Apartments so there's two two
2:45 sections in there there are a lot of art
2:48 galleries out here too
2:50 what is it I was wrong I thought that
2:52 might be wood carvings when we first
2:54 drove by but they're they're not they're
2:57 more stone or
2:59 I got actual sculptures like Mr
3:01 sculpture
3:10 it's like a clay almost yeah like a hard
3:10 clay
3:11 oh no it's metal metal
3:17 makes looks like clay
3:20 and not just the guide map we have but
3:22 there's also a map here that you can
3:25 kind of shows
3:26 with some of the old buildings used to
3:28 look like like Calhoun Street that's
3:30 what we're on right Calhoun yeah we're
3:32 on Calhoun now
3:33 here is the store
3:36 and there's the Bluffton Farmers Market
3:39 so it's just a little information
3:40 placards all over town if you so choose
3:42 to come down here and walk around
3:47 I don't know if this is the name of an
3:47 event or a store name
3:50 a store name
3:52 our street name all right could be a
3:54 yearly event
3:57 the squad The Squat and Gobble
4:06 maybe some kind of a contest
4:06 who do you think the champion Squat and
4:08 gobbler is
4:13 look at all those birds up there
4:13 a lot of them
4:19 Hitchcock
4:19 yeah
4:24 it's all done
4:24 again plenty of information on some of
4:27 the history of this is the Mulligan
4:29 house established 1940. I would have
4:31 guessed it would have been a little
4:32 older than that but circa 1940 according
4:35 to the time
4:36 definitely some really nice architecture
4:39 walking around through here I don't know
4:40 if Hilton had proper like the island
4:42 itself which is you know it took us
4:44 probably 15-20 minutes to drive from the
4:46 resort to here
4:48 yeah probably a half hour with traffic
4:49 and whatnot it's only about 10-15 miles
4:52 I don't know if Hilton Head really has
4:54 like a downtowny kind of area like this
4:57 to us
4:58 at least from
4:59 not that we've seen
5:05 oh so this this right here was the on
5:05 that sign back there this was the store
5:07 that old photo is this building the
5:10 store
5:25 for a painting of some cows do you know
5:25 the difference between a upside down
5:28 horseshoe and a right side up horseshoe
5:30 I really don't one of them is good luck
5:32 and one of them is bad luck yeah I'm
5:34 gonna guess most businesses would
5:36 probably have the good luck horseshoe so
5:37 I'm gonna guess that that would be a
5:40 good luck horseshoe but I really don't
5:41 know for sure
5:47 you know what the King of Hearts means
5:47 the King of Hearts King of Hearts but do
5:49 I know what it means yeah no all right
5:52 another name for this is the people's
5:54 store established 1904 interesting
5:58 though people's is not what spelled like
6:00 people there are people walking down the
6:02 road it's people someone's name p-e-e-p
6:06 -les
6:08 the people store
6:10 and also perfect timing
6:13 classic car truck alert going by over
6:16 there I thought the truck was going to
6:17 drive by here I was going to get a good
6:19 angle of it so that was a fail
6:32 beautiful houses through here
6:32 so my dad was just sharing a little info
6:34 about
6:35 the town name you want to want to give a
6:37 little info here yeah
6:50 most towns that have a ton on the end of
6:50 it like Bluffton is uh over the years
6:55 let's go somewhere quieter
7:17 all right here we go this is Dayton back
7:17 to 1850 Seven Oaks
7:20 so see if you get the farther we walk
7:22 down the road it's getting to be a
7:23 little older
7:25 than the houses and whatnot it's just
7:26 such a beautiful area with the trees
7:28 actually I think it's the Seven Oaks
7:32 Seven Oaks in a pot oh a palm tree yeah
7:34 so you think the reason I got seven okay
7:36 there's seven oak trees in the yard or
7:38 there were back in 1850
7:49 let's see one two three no one two three
7:49 four five
7:50 six
7:53 I thought Oak
7:55 over there Oak
8:02 one two three four five six oh yeah yeah
8:02 it's at least seven or at least I was
8:05 there so it's very common for names like
8:08 Bluffton to have been in the original
8:10 form Bluff town
8:12 and then Through The Years instead of
8:15 being two words Bluff Town it got
8:17 shortened to Bluffton
8:20 properly if you go back on most cities
8:22 that have ton on the end of it that's
8:24 usually the way it turns just like a
8:27 easier way to say the two words yeah
8:29 like Carrollton Carrollton Georgia yeah
8:31 was originally Carrolltown Georgia and
8:35 what is a bluff a bluff is a hill
8:38 overlooking a river we're going to go
8:39 down here to the river in a second the
8:41 May River the May River
8:43 oh look at this that's I guess you could
8:45 say that would be a classic kind of a
8:46 classic car more of a sporty kind of car
8:50 cool one thing I like about all these
8:52 houses is there are date stamps on all
8:54 of them and the historical significance
8:56 but also the date so you got this wrap
8:58 around porch here it was Cottage now
9:01 this church building this is a newer
9:04 extension but dating back to the 1850s
9:08 this is the Church of the Cross this old
9:11 wood building here very beautiful Gothic
9:13 style
9:19 oh it says it right down here 1857.
9:19 the Church of the cross
9:25 right here along the water
9:25 it looks like the doors open over there
9:31 we can go in there
9:31 okay the sign down there the doors open
9:34 it does say
9:45 and they do have worship Services
9:45 that's interesting Saturdays they have
9:48 worship service at 5 28 pm and then
9:51 Sunday is 8 A.M at 10 A.M
9:53 it's an interesting time 5 28 on a
9:56 Saturday
9:57 catches the attention though yeah
10:00 you won't forget that so you'll know
10:02 what time the service starts
10:04 established in 1767 it builds the
10:07 congregation started in 1767. they built
10:09 the church in 1854.
10:17 and it's on the national register of
10:17 historic places I
10:25 it generates it helps your nerves and
10:25 things like that but I was like so the
10:28 construction of this church
10:37 when you look at the outside of this
10:37 church
10:44 okay nothing's been done it was
10:44 whitewashing once uh late 1920s and that
10:49 was it so you'll see when you walk
11:00 so our performance parts were around the
11:00 windows
11:52 but there's also this latch
11:52 on the door which you hardly ever see
11:56 anything like this I grew up in the
11:58 church my dad was a minister for a long
12:00 time regular Church peers don't have
12:03 like a little lock in area quite like
12:06 that that's different
12:09 have you ever seen the ones like that
12:11 that have the lock on them
12:29 this is Northeast like in Boston and the
12:29 old church buildings up there patterns
12:32 seating very similar to that so there's
12:35 a beekeeper here at the building
12:39 so is a Rector like a minister yeah
12:47 The Beekeeper this is either
12:47 this is either an Anglican Church okay
12:50 Episcopal there you go
12:53 I knew it wasn't Catholic but uh anyway
12:57 The Beekeeper yes yes he said there's
13:01 more to the story than he's telling
13:05 really
13:07 that's a Priceless Steinway
13:10 in the mirror
13:16 doing a lot of construction and
13:16 renovations
13:17 keeping all the old buildings in good
13:20 working fashion
13:21 this will be something that'll
13:24 be back on display when it's finished
13:34 really is a beautiful day out of the
13:34 series of days we've been here
13:35 this is probably the nicest warmth wise
13:43 Bluffton showing 73 maybe a high of 79
13:43 of course Hilton Head just down the road
13:45 71.
13:48 so a little cooler on the ocean
13:50 not by much though 73 warmest day that
13:52 we've had swing since you've been in
13:53 this area there's an old store over here
13:55 called the rate
13:57 where they have
13:59 Sundries Cosmetics they sell seal test
14:03 ice cream they have exclusively candies
14:06 tobaccos things like that you see this
14:09 intersection and the road we were just
14:10 on not very busy there's just like
14:13 nothing going on on this road whether
14:14 this gentleman mowing his yard but over
14:16 here this is turning into quite the the
14:19 busy intersection here at the rate
14:23 where they sell different items I don't
14:24 even know if the store's still open but
14:26 pretty cool looking mural here on the
14:28 side and take a look at this like I said
14:30 there's a lot of
14:31 there's a lot going on a lot of
14:33 construction going on and renovating
14:34 going on
14:36 he's a heavy machinery just went by
14:43 they sell Sundries here yes you know
14:43 what a sundry is you know what a sundry
14:44 is I don't
14:46 like a Sunday strawberry Sundries
14:48 chocolate Sundries plain straight
14:50 vanillas what is a sun is it a Sunday
14:53 it's just a general merchandise oh
14:55 merchandise
14:56 okay I thought it was like gonna be like
14:58 a dessert of some sort so a sundry is
15:01 just a name for murdered
15:03 I always thought it was like a Sunday
15:07 interesting Sundries are just general
15:09 merchandise General word for Stuff wow I
15:13 you know I
15:14 various very foolish in my assumption
15:17 all these years
15:18 look up top here they also have
15:19 cosmetics
15:21 uh sodas magazines and evidently this is
15:26 where the manager
15:29 the manager's door
15:31 this is now just used as an office
15:35 they no longer have Sundries
15:38 it's a home care
15:46 48.
15:46 well because you go to a lot of these
15:47 towns and everything's really really run
15:48 down but because of the Bluffton
15:50 historical preservation Society they're
15:53 fixing the whole area up the whole area
15:54 is just completely
15:56 you know being fixed up renovated yeah
15:58 it's great at least houses
16:00 there's a there's a place around here
16:01 called the card house which I think
16:03 might be on this block where a famous
16:06 area of Hilton Head Island was one in a
16:09 card game according to full lore for the
16:12 area see if we can find that again what
16:14 the folklore and legends say
16:17 back in the 1840s there was a guy named
16:19 William
16:21 baynard he won a deed to Braddock's
16:25 Point Plantation
16:32 right here in this private residence
16:32 can't go any further than this but this
16:34 is what some say is the card house
16:38 late night poker games back in the 19th
16:40 century the reason I know that it's on
16:42 the little information here you can see
16:44 the card house listed there
16:47 Circa
16:48 1825 so a piece of Hilton Head history
16:51 happened right behind those shrubs
16:54 in the card house right there
16:56 we have certainly got quite the plethora
16:59 of sounds and noises while we've been
17:01 around here yes it has been quite the uh
17:05 cornucopios now that I say that there's
17:06 no noises
17:08 hush-hush and quiet right now airplane
17:10 the airplane the backing sounds the leaf
17:14 blowers weed eaters so you always hear
17:16 these stories of things you always hear
17:18 this folklore of people who have won
17:20 lots of things in
17:21 playing poker it's always poker has
17:25 anyone ever won anything playing Go Fish
17:27 or Uno remember Uno I do
17:32 I do I don't know of anyone really
17:34 imagine playing tonight
17:37 maybe it's not it doesn't sound as
17:39 impressive
17:46 it's just a little historical tours
17:47 going on all over the place too
17:55 there's a grouping of people over there
17:55 not
17:56 p-e-o-p-l-e but p no that is a people
17:59 spelled like people the store was people
18:02 store p-e-e-p-l
18:23 oh sippin cow Cafe so not tipping a cow
18:23 sipping a cow sipping cow Cafe
18:26 you got the little
18:32 directional arrows here
18:32 showing some of the stuff that's around
18:33 here
18:35 May River Road restaurants
18:38 oh there's a crab
18:40 for that
18:42 we are now in the car to drive around a
18:45 little bit
18:46 this is like a newer area but it's made
18:48 to look vintage looks pretty neat
18:50 through here
18:59 just sipping cow the sipping cow oh
19:00 there it is the sipping cow this traffic
19:02 circle here at Palmetto Bay Road
19:12 usually traffic circles move pretty
19:12 quickly
19:30 I just can't get over
19:30 look Big Ben Parliament
19:38 it's pretty interesting stuff around
19:38 here thinking this might be some sort of
19:41 a sundial perhaps
19:43 yeah maybe not maybe just a piece of
19:44 artwork
19:45 but I recall this from last time I was
19:48 in this neck of the woods
19:57 Charles Fraser
19:57 Charles frasser or Frazier
20:04 sculpture was made in 2010 made of
20:04 bronze
20:09 Charles was known for walking around
20:09 Hilton Head Island with an alligator he
20:11 had a pet alligator so he'd have his
20:13 umbrella
20:14 and then he'd have the alligator right
20:16 down below
20:26 now there's quite a bit of traffic going
20:26 by
20:27 possibly honking at Charles and his pet
20:30 gator do not have a name for the pet
20:31 gator however ah excellent
20:35 the statue is based on the photograph of
20:37 Charles E Fraser as it appeared in a
20:40 1962 edition of Saturday evening post
20:43 on quote people on the way up unquote
20:45 to celebrate image caused a media
20:47 sensation and awarded the Sea Pines
20:49 Resort National Acclaim it is a gift
20:52 from the Community Foundation of the Low
20:54 Country Town of Hilton Head Island
20:55 dedicated back in 2010
20:59 so there is a photo of him with his
21:01 umbrella Charles with his umbrella walk
21:04 in the gator
21:35 right there at the light
21:35 Hilton Head Island
21:37 Fire Department
21:39 oh fire truck
21:53 some lily pads here toadstools
21:54 a soft frog on here but it hopped off
21:55 where I could walk over
21:58 it may have been a lizard
22:21 I'm now gonna head over to the Hilton
22:21 Head rear range lighthouse
22:24 over here which has this information
22:26 tells you to go and it's in a
22:29 neighborhood where you can request a
22:30 lighthouse pass
22:32 so that's where we're heading
22:34 we're heading over there now I have now
22:36 got my pass
22:38 for the day
22:39 restricted pass to get to this
22:41 neighborhood to see the White House now
22:44 there's not really a lot of parking
22:45 around here you would be inclined like I
22:47 was to park
22:49 on the grass over here
22:51 however thanks to one of the local
22:53 residents that you can't park on the
22:55 grass I didn't see the sign
22:57 but he said that you could park on the
22:59 road
23:00 it's legal so I parked on the road
23:03 directly behind me
23:13 it's a little bit of a chore to get back
23:13 here you have to go through a couple
23:14 different
23:15 couple different checkpoints you have to
23:17 let them know what you're doing you have
23:19 to have the proper credentials they will
23:21 give you the credentials
23:22 just by asking
23:24 we had the pamphlet and we just showed
23:27 the pamphlet at both the different two
23:28 stations on the way in all checkpoints
23:31 and they're good okay they give us the
23:32 paperwork rear Lighthouse of Hilton Head
23:35 range light station was built in 1879 in
23:37 the 1880
23:39 stood 92 feet above sea level visible
23:42 from 15 miles away
23:53 right in front of the lighthouse is one
23:53 of the oldest live oak trees on the
23:56 island
23:57 estimated between 430 and 450
24:01 years old and that live oak tree
24:04 is this one right here
24:07 over 400 years old this tree
24:10 beautiful people out here playing golf
24:13 as well
24:22 it states here on the side of that
24:22 information about that tree
24:25 feature on National British historic
24:26 places back in 18 I'm sorry 1985. the
24:31 lighthouse itself not the tree
24:33 oh take a look at this
24:36 here is something about the cistern and
24:39 the Live Oak
24:41 the Livingston Live Oak which is the
24:43 neighborhood we're in it's as close to
24:45 the lighthouse a magnificent backdrop
24:48 for the 15th green of Arthur Hills
24:51 Golf Course right over there Arthur
24:53 Hills Golf Course
24:59 whenever I see a golf course I think of
24:59 falling down with Michael Douglas with
25:01 the diameter of the tree 70 feet tall
25:03 and a canopy spreads across 150 feet the
25:06 cistern was built alongside the oil
25:08 house
25:09 and holds are used to hold 3500
25:24 there's no easy task getting back here
25:24 was it no sir it wasn't checkpoints and
25:27 some walking and some no parking and
25:29 some parking I've noticed Hilton Head
25:30 you have to really want to get into
25:32 certain areas because every place has
25:34 like little guard shacks and whatnot
25:40 every time I think about a lighthouse I
25:40 think about that sailor that was out on
25:42 the sea and his captain called up to him
25:44 and says do you see the lighthouse do
25:46 you see the light on the lighthouse
25:48 said yes yes no
25:59 nice decommissioned back in 1932. now no
25:59 elevators
26:01 to get to the top this has a hundred and
26:03 twelve steps spiral staircase leads to a
26:07 Cypress watchroom fitted with a
26:09 reflector light or Mickey Rooney
26:13 well I know Mickey Rooney what's up a
26:15 lighthouse or Pete's Dragon but I wonder
26:16 if he went to Lighthouse at any other
26:17 times in his life you know being lumpy
26:20 and all
26:31 the legend of the oil house evidently
26:31 the Lighthouse Keeper passed on
26:34 had a heart attack bringing oil to the
26:36 tower during her oh I remember this from
26:37 last time
26:42 so after noticing an absence the
26:42 Keeper's daughter Caroline discovered
26:45 what happened to his father several days
26:46 Caroline walked through hit deep Waters
26:48 replenisha Towers oil and then she
26:52 passed away several days later due to
26:56 exhaustions sightings of the lady in
26:58 blue dress have been reported
27:01 on dark rainy nights
27:10 wow what year was that
27:10 I don't see a year constructed in 82.
27:17 I don't see a year about the
27:17 the lady in blue
27:30 forgot about that story it's pretty
27:30 interesting
27:32 it'll be pretty interesting out here
27:34 playing golf I would imagine maybe she
27:35 appears at night probably not people out
27:38 here playing golf at night
27:39 but imagine being out here next to the
27:41 lighthouse seeing the lighthouse
27:42 Keeper's daughter
27:44 the lady in blue whoa that is misting
27:48 right on me
27:55 the wind is blowing up
27:55 sprinkler right over my direction
28:01 the lady in blue not to be confused with
28:01 the lady in red which is Gene Wilder
28:03 movie
28:03 had nothing to do with Lighthouse as far
28:05 as I can remember
28:15 pine cones all right heading back to the
28:16 a little more family time see if my
28:18 Mama's back out of the pool man I'll go
28:20 back from the beach I think we'll go to
28:22 dinner a little bit later
28:27 and just kind of relax a little bit more
28:27 throughout the course of the afternoon
28:28 and now gonna head over to a seafood
28:31 restaurant I've heard good things about
28:32 we're gonna get a little Seafood action
28:34 now there are a couple different
28:36 restaurants in this little area there's
28:37 Skull Creek Dockside but down here down
28:41 this little pathway right on the water
28:44 a place called Hudson Seafood
28:47 right on the water
28:53 yeah before walking down there of course
28:53 the parking situation down here is
28:56 pretty small but back where we just
28:58 where it was a huge parking area
29:00 they have the menus here
29:03 obviously it's dinner time
29:05 oh here we go so dinner starts at 4 30.
29:07 and here's the dinner menu
29:13 there's a lunch menu and a dinner menu
29:13 it's about 5 p.m right now
29:15 and No Reservations this first come
29:17 first serve I called reservation they
29:19 said don't just first come first serve
29:20 but I know
29:21 from what I've heard it gets pretty busy
29:27 yeah it looks like they're
29:27 a little signage and mascot is a mermaid
29:29 up there yeah right up there here's a
29:31 mermaid saying come on in get some
29:33 seafood
29:34 I think we will and the Sun is like just
29:37 about to start setting open daily lunch
29:39 at 11 and dinner at five
29:53 I thought this was like a local paper
29:53 but in fact when you open it up it is
29:56 the menu
29:58 and the napkin is basically on a blue
30:00 washcloth like this and they get instead
30:02 of bringing you like you know they're
30:04 bringing like an appetizer they bring
30:05 you like some Hush Puppies here that are
30:07 complimentary with the with the meal
30:09 right and then you got the rice with the
30:11 tartar sauce over here
30:13 all right so I have to say the service
30:16 was very very quick this food came out
30:18 so quickly I ended up getting a crab
30:21 cake over here I got a crab cake a
30:22 little bit of garnishing over there I
30:25 got some uh broccoli on this I ended up
30:27 getting the flounder okay I got the
30:29 fries
30:31 right
30:46 like Mom got the pasta salad or the uh
30:46 the uh the pasta shrimp pasta I ended up
30:49 getting the we're gonna be getting the
30:50 kind of Coca-Cola but the Coca-Cola was
30:52 like a little flat it was uh it was not
30:55 carbonated right my mom said try the
30:56 sweet tea sweet tea is pretty good so we
30:58 have the sweet tea and it's pretty
31:00 awesome but I got the sweet tea much
31:01 better than the Coca-Cola I have to say
31:03 it was thoroughly impressed with that
31:05 place and I wasn't even gonna eat the
31:06 baked potato because it was so full I
31:08 took a bite or two just so like they
31:09 wouldn't be like how come you didn't
31:10 fish or eat your baked potato the baked
31:12 potato was like one of the best things
31:13 I've ever had they had like a sea salt
31:16 flavor on the on the Rind of the potato
31:18 on the skin of the potato man that was
31:20 awesome anyway I was like really
31:22 impossible Hudson's and back now to the
31:25 resort that's gonna do it for today also
31:27 this is the last day of staying here it
31:30 was kind of a fun family vacation and
