0:02 today's adventure brings us to the Ohio
0:02 State Reformatory it first opened its
0:06 doors in 1896 and in 1983 was placed on
0:13 the National Registry of historical
0:16 places here in Mansfield we're going in
0:23 welcome everyone Adam the whoo here now
0:27 I have been here back in 2013 back in
0:33 2013 I documented segments of the
0:36 property for my Shawshank Redemption
0:38 filming location but today I'm gonna
0:41 dive in deeper to the nooks and crannies
0:42 of the premises join me shalyah next to
0:48 the West administrative wing check out
0:52 the floor really like the design of the
0:55 tiles and if you peek out the window you
1:00 can see the side angle of the building
1:03 and an old metal gate standing there and
1:08 a newly paved road those were used in
1:10 the film Air Force one fact that whole
1:13 courtyard can be seen in one of the
1:17 shots from the movie this toy train was
1:19 made by an inmate in the 1950s they also
1:24 have a plate and a clock tower that were
1:27 made here by the prison inmates here in
1:31 the Annex this door is from the
1:35 electrocution chamber and they have the
1:40 electrical chair there as well as a mask
1:44 that they would place over the face this
1:48 hood was placed on the condemned person
1:51 just prior to electrocution in that
1:56 chair as well as the telephone that
1:59 makes the call giving the order and the
2:02 box with all the the gears and the knobs
2:05 to make it operate just like in Green
2:08 Mile your place the sponge upon the head
2:13 right there didn't cool yeah very much
2:18 that's for sure oh yeah my sister's here
2:20 with me as well some serious heavy-duty
2:23 blocks there as well as a straitjacket
2:29 and some handcuffs
2:31 I like the creaky wooden floors in here
2:36 give quite a bit of cool ambience check
2:41 out the ceiling this foyer is very
2:44 beautiful
2:44 speaking of stained glass look on the
2:46 right there's like three huge chunks of
2:48 stained glass leading up that staircase
2:50 some items on loan including this which
2:53 even hold in front of you during your
2:56 mug shot and then you put this on and
2:59 this is what you wore your days in the
3:02 prison if you wanted to get tattooed you
3:05 had to use this item made out of a
3:08 toothbrush handle duct tape bail wire
3:10 and the tip of a ballpoint pen and most
3:16 likely the item on top would be
3:18 confiscated you cannot have a weapon of
3:20 like that in here for just a nickel you
3:25 could purchase this little coupon which
3:28 was good for a haircut that's the top
3:31 part of the device you would sit in this
3:34 chair or one like it and get your
3:37 haircut the last time I was here a few
3:38 years ago none of these items were here
3:41 they were restoring the whole building
3:44 so pretty cool to see it current deck
3:46 these old school eating utensils and
3:49 trays salt and pepper shakers are huge
3:53 and this bag of tobacco has an unusual
3:57 name nicknamed bug dust I guess that's
4:02 what they refer to chewing tobacco as
4:04 bug dust
4:11 a lot of times they lived here and the
4:11 boys were even taught to drive by an
4:13 enemy so the wardens son was taught to
4:16 drive by a prisoner
4:36 there are some areas that are not
4:36 allowed out they are roped off you can
4:39 peek around the corner and just see a
4:41 little bit of the abandoned areas but
4:46 most the spots you are allowed side of
5:06 the walls and the ceiling through this
5:09 corridor is deteriorating most the
5:11 bottom floors have been renovated once
5:15 you leave that area everything else is
5:18 pretty much how it was under this
5:21 archway is a bathroom no longer
5:28 operational CV rusted out sink there's a
5:32 flower here designated for Helen a tub
5:38 very dirty bathing area and a commode
5:43 and the pink paint is starting to shine
5:48 through the outer coating of white paint
5:58 that's peeling off whoa is that bunny
5:58 rabbit hidden pink bunny this door has
6:03 an opening here where you could slide
6:05 medication and it's clamped on and with
6:08 a little hook there and on the opposite
6:11 side there's an area that the nurse or
6:14 the guard could just speak through there
6:16 to talk to whoever was on the opposite
6:20 side some serious history shining
6:24 through here in this old wallpaper Wow
6:29 it's like a bunch of different layers
6:31 and different colors from decades and
6:35 decades
6:36 of just different layers that they
6:38 placed on the walls the warden's
6:41 bathroom and living quarters even some
6:45 furniture or parts of the furniture and
6:49 chairs quite a big area that he resided
6:54 in went all the way into into this room
6:59 as well
7:00 fireplace down here to stay warm from
7:03 the other angle looking back into the
7:06 living area notice the roof they are
7:09 starting to cave in there's some wire
7:12 mesh holding it together
7:14 but it has seen definitely seen better
7:17 days closet area with drawers and places
7:22 to hang your clothes you know it's
7:24 interesting because we all have homes we
7:26 all live you know in our houses but
7:30 imagine living in a prison this is where
7:33 you reside this is where this is what
7:36 you call home slightly different than
7:38 what slightly different for what most of
7:41 us are used to no no no don't touch that
7:45 don't touch you would give that would
7:47 flood the whole place looks to be a
7:51 little stage in that corner you can see
7:55 some of the items that they are using
7:57 currently just to repair and clean clean
8:01 the place up this little cubby hole it's
8:03 kind of interesting it's only a couple
8:05 feet across not very wide look at the
8:09 tile down here this leads into one of
8:13 the the spires the tower is right up
8:18 there that's pretty cool it's like a
8:21 long hidden compartment
8:32 it's a wasp there be careful don't like
8:32 it you don't want to get stung the
8:35 fireplace mantel has been removed I love
8:38 this it's old light if these walls could
8:45 talk well better yet if this light can
8:48 talk you can definitely tell some
8:51 stories a box of memories a box of
8:56 memories here some old life world
9:00 library books one of the slogans was
9:03 Ohio's University of another chance this
9:09 is where the inmates did their schooling
9:11 and learning in this room here however
9:17 if you were a troublemaker they made you
9:21 learn in solitary so this is the
9:25 solitary room for learning that's just
9:28 what I think it is I don't think that's
9:30 really what it was as the story does if
9:33 you place the big one the chair in the
9:35 middle of the room and leave the room
9:38 it will move what notice the X on the
9:42 floor just before you enter this area
9:44 the building is so symmetrical that the
9:47 X is always visible as long as there is
9:50 light coming in the windows of the four
9:52 rooms are joining the hallway oh yeah
9:55 there it is
9:58 that's pretty wild
10:00 I say x marks the spot but I don't think
10:04 there's any treasure under there it's
10:06 just a really cool the cool ambience
10:09 here and this little all the way there
10:10 now gonna head further upward to the
10:14 main chapel at one point there were two
10:17 levels you can see this staircase that
10:22 is now blocked off led up to a balcony
10:33 nineteen hundred inmates could pile in
10:33 here look along the wall you can see
10:37 where the balcony once was this room is
10:40 huge if you were being sacrilegious you
10:47 get thrown up in there and one on the on
10:52 the bottom level and there was a escape
10:55 attempt which happened in this very room
10:59 designated with this historical marker
11:02 they tried chiseling out the wall right
11:06 there this was covered there were some
11:08 workers that would be hide behind the
11:10 cover and overtime one of the guards
11:13 thought what are they up to they removed
11:15 the cover and they noticed that hole
11:18 trying to get outdoors reading a little
11:21 more it was a cabinet and all three of
11:24 the inmates afterwards were taken to the
11:26 hole and more time was added to their
11:29 sentence after that no one was left
11:31 alone in the chapel here's the pulpit
11:37 which would be the view from the
11:39 preachers perspective a very impressive
11:44 room to say the least
11:46 the mural on the wall above the stage
11:48 really really adds to it
11:55 I don't have the key she's in do you
11:59 guys have the key hey you don't have the
12:01 key No
12:02 oh she got never mind she's out baby
12:04 you're free should I call them I'm gonna
12:07 call the guy I'm gonna call the guards
12:08 this is the largest cell block in the
12:14 world two-sided this is one side six
12:17 tiers tall and you can see how far down
12:21 it goes here's the second booth all I
12:24 just went off the second side you can
12:31 get a pretty good perspective down
12:34 through here past this mesh inside this
12:37 room there is this mechanism here take a
12:42 look at this I think this is what opens
12:44 the doors to the cells the guard places
12:49 hand here turn that or this vice versa
12:54 and the doors to all the cells on this
13:00 level would open up
13:25 I know I know there's really nothing we
13:25 can do about these you doing can't live
13:27 with regrets and here time when you're
13:33 doing thinking can draw out like a blade
14:05 James Lockhart was serving up to 15
14:05 years and on February 6 1960 he took his
14:12 own life by setting himself on fire with
14:16 matches and lighter fluid in this very
14:22 cell here's a photo from back in the day
14:25 interior view of the hospital thin and
14:29 the hospital now don't want to get any
14:34 closer and do not want to shoot any
14:36 footage out the window that direction
14:39 because there is an active prison and
14:41 there are there are prisoners in the
14:45 yard so I'm not going to show out there
14:46 because it's asking me not to but I did
14:49 want to show the sign and let you know
14:50 that on-site is still currently an
14:53 active prison behind this one however
14:57 this is a photo opportunity and I can
15:01 see why because from this angle it's
15:04 pretty incredible imagine climbing that
15:07 winding staircase to get to the top it
15:12 just goes around and around and around
15:13 you can get dizzy I don't know if I
15:15 would get tired first or nauseous from
15:18 the bottom floor you can see the second
15:20 level does not have the walkway
15:22 protection it did that they have removed
15:25 it from that point on and the top four
15:29 levels they all have the outer gate and
15:33 of course the bottom doesn't need it
15:34 because no one's gonna fall off but not
15:37 allowed to walk up on that second second
15:39 level when you showered you did not do
15:42 it in the privacy of your own little
15:45 area you showered with everyone else
15:48 which is perfectly fine unless Boggs is
15:53 in the room just keep an eye out for box
15:59 tucked away down here are the solitary
16:03 confine
16:04 sells and while there is a toilet and a
16:07 bed
16:08 I'm not seeing a sink of any type when
16:13 that door closes it's nothing but
16:15 darkness except for that one little
16:19 window here's an aerial view from 1964
16:23 the building I'm in at the moment is
16:26 this structure everything up here has
16:30 been bulldozed and the new act of prison
16:32 is back there but all this still exists
16:37 that as most places you exit through the
16:40 gift shop
16:41 I am surprised however to see that they
16:44 are selling laser discs this is not a
16:47 DVD or a blu-ray this is a this is a
16:50 laser disc huh I do like the series of
16:55 books they are very informative this
16:58 image of America series and for the
17:01 person who has everything the the gift
17:04 that keeps on giving the Ohio State
17:07 Reformatory
17:09 bulb for your tree it's a Christmas
17:12 ornament that's going to do it for today
