0:09 establishments back in 1908 this
0:13 particular spot opened its doors making
0:15 it one of the longest continually
0:18 operating restaurants in Los Angeles I'm
0:22 heading downtown of I didn't you to join
0:24 me Shawn you had to recharge a few
0:27 batteries got a packed up now and
0:29 putting them in the back and off I go I
0:31 know big the foot and I agree with you
0:34 100% pretty happy we're in route to this
0:37 spot as well I have arrived at Philippe
0:42 the original sometimes refer to as
0:45 Philippe's I believe they accept
0:47 either/or there's a couple different
0:50 parking lots to choose from this one's
0:52 on the other side of the road
0:58 reserved specifically for this
0:58 restaurants customers when it comes to
1:00 LA this place is a staple
1:08 that's for sure
1:08 french-dip sandwiches don't mind if I do
1:12 that's what I'm gonna have now as the
1:16 story goes as best as I recall this
1:19 sandwich kind of started as an accident
1:21 it fell into the sauce and the gentleman
1:25 was in such a hurry to get back to work
1:28 that he consumed it came back the next
1:31 day and said I want that same item and
1:33 it just kind of the wheels were in
1:35 motion and the rest is history just
1:38 below that historical marker is the
1:41 signage for the cross streets board and
1:47 all of meda Street
1:51 the 900 block I have been here once
1:55 before don't believe I documented the
1:58 occasion however at least not in the
2:01 full extent that I will be traversing
2:03 today it's been a few years ago as well
2:07 quite a few years notice down on the far
2:11 end there the old neon sign also still
2:14 remains celebrating their hundredth
2:17 anniversary back in 2008 it's been
2:21 around for a while open daily from 6
2:24 a.m. to 10 p.m.
2:25 some lengthy hours for all us hungry

2:32 this tree branch is providing some
2:34 proper framing to this angle
2:47 nice it looks as if at this timeframe
2:47 there's not really a whole lot of people
2:49 in line which could be a good thing they
2:53 have all the statements out front and
2:56 the markers along the ground that go all
3:00 the way down the side of the building
3:12 I have met up with deacon from deacons
3:12 universe you ever been here before yeah
3:15 been about seven years seven years a
3:18 long time how many times before that
3:21 have you eaten here oh you lost captain
3:26 so what's the go-to if I have to order

3:29 oh just a standard french dip was it
3:33 coming to platter is it just just the
3:35 sandwich yourself well they have ten
3:37 different stations you go up and they
3:39 yes for barbers and I'll get you
3:41 whatever you want
3:42 so they carve it right in front of you
3:44 everything they also make their own
3:46 chili their own stews and he started in
3:52 1908 over there 101 freeway now resides
3:57 we actually Oh in the 50 I was 1951 so
4:01 this has only been here since the 50s
4:02 the original is over by the 101 okay I
4:05 was mistaken on that and in 1918 is when
4:07 he accidentally made the French dip okay
4:10 he dropped it in the back of some greasy
4:14 gravy and hope the patron said hey just
4:18 leave it give it to me yeah so I heard
4:20 and in the next and then the guy came
4:22 back the next day with friends and that
4:25 began the whole thing yeah all right
4:27 let's go in there let's go get some
4:28 let's go get some chow the owner sold it
4:32 to three brothers who used to rent out
4:34 horse wagons and
4:36 19:29 three brothers told the guys who
4:39 had horse wagons they used to rent out
4:41 other David run out the horse bag and
4:43 they they bought the place for like five
4:46 thousand dollars it's happening
4:50 they also have breakfast
5:02 I know if a French Dip would be the best
5:02 for breakfast right kept the markers
5:03 here and they have this kind of
5:06 stationed off at this middle section
5:09 here stationed off so you follow the
5:11 line a lot of old newspaper clippings as
5:15 well stretching along the side
5:31 the beef dip is 895 they also have other
5:31 options so I go with the beef dip just a
5:35 regular beef dip right okay I'm gonna go
5:37 with the beef dip and maybe aside in a
5:40 drink
5:41 proudly serving Dolores chili
5:45 and gourmet coffee davina gourmet coffee
5:49 and coca-cola
5:51 this is also a popular item here these
5:53 are pickled eggs deviled eggs they
5:57 compete on that devil no devil would
5:58 have the stuff inside there are pickled
6:02 eggs don't know why it's double dutch
6:08 I like deviled eggs I don't know if I
6:08 ever had a pickled egg you ever had a
6:10 pickled egg you never have
6:14 I've seen those sorry try one can I get
6:20 a pickled egg off now get a pickled egg

6:23 we also have some I guess that's swallow
6:26 there in the middle and macaroni salad
6:29 and potato salad there on the far end
6:31 and this is this flawed or a banana
6:34 pudding that's happy okay pudding Oh
6:37 Jeff that's not pretty good I'm gonna
6:39 regret not getting the Tapio tapioca all
6:42 right got both of ours right here look
6:46 at this this is what we're dealing with
6:50 are you happy about this I resisted
6:53 temptation did not get soda pop I went
6:56 with two bottles of water I did get the
6:59 one side but I did not get any of the
7:01 mac salad for the the other items that
7:04 they have even with the bottle coke nice
7:09 I've down many of those in my day do you
7:13 think do you think it's better in a
7:14 bottle or in a can that's that's I agree
7:17 with you a hundred percent okay so these
7:19 are the same or you're going in okay we
7:23 got two of these so you
7:24 this ain't the same order right and we
7:27 got the what kind of sauce is this this
7:29 is like beef or can't pronounce that
7:32 beat ours our G large apartment Joshu

7:39 okay so you grab that one take the are
7:43 these the same are they both or they're
7:44 both dips up they're both depth but then
7:46 also they gave us the idea of some extra
7:48 this one almost looks a little bit a bit
7:50 more more dip more dip than that would
7:52 choose whichever one you want whatever
7:54 whatever your preference is you get that
7:55 one and I'll get this one here and then
7:58 we'll say you gotta go is there anything
8:09 on there some mustard they're back I
8:12 know I don't think there's mustard I
8:13 think they just just just straight up
8:15 yeah
8:17 and that looks so good and then oh my
8:20 gosh and then give me extra why you had
8:24 to ask for this they don't normally give
8:25 that to ya that's that can we get a
8:27 little extra dip it in the reason don't
8:28 come only normally come with the extra
8:31 dip yeah they they dip this is dill and
8:35 this is a little bit of sugar just a I'm
8:38 gonna just try the first one by itself
8:42 and then I'm gonna dip it okay great

9:21 they don't fully trench it now they're
9:21 not sure why they named it the French
9:22 Dip they say it might either be because
9:25 of beliefs the French heritage or
9:28 because it's on a French roll but I came
9:41 back the next day to get the mistake his
9:45 last name I did read that too so you
9:50 never know

10:05 is it it's alright it's pricey when you

12:11 I'm gonna reiterate when he can just
12:11 mention the spicy mustard on the roll
12:14 from the bread mixed with this is that's
12:19 that's the combo right there all three
12:21 of those idols that says this in the
12:25 short time we've been here it's gotten a
12:26 lot busier feels like a little bit of a
12:28 line behind us now say a lot because you
12:31 just got busier people starting to come
12:32 down
12:48 yeah that mustard is good it's really
12:48 not that hot No

14:17 bit of twang and it just tastes like a
14:19 hard-boiled egg with just a little bit
14:20 of yeah a little bit of beet it has to
14:22 it that's at the meat flavor so it's
14:25 peaches
14:25 oh no not the trend eat
14:29 much better than I expected it today
14:32 yeah that is good I'm just going to get
14:37 another the long lines pretty long even
14:41 no sound we got here those are really
14:44 good I could eat like six of those I
14:47 like it I would feel uncomfortable
14:49 afterwards but those are good I'm gonna
14:51 get those if I ever see them again
14:52 total for both our meals combined twenty
14:55 nine dollars and seven cents so 1794 the
15:00 beef single dips I forgot to get the
15:03 double you know double would have been
15:04 to my double debate I've been too much
15:06 two bottles of water a coke in a bottle
15:10 and a pickled egg total of 26 55 ad in
15:14 the LA County tax to 52 cents from the
15:18 twenty nine dollars and seven cents just
15:20 kind of browse around to some of the
15:21 other accessories along the whole of the
15:23 walls there is a lot to look at and they
15:26 have merchandise t-shirts right up top
15:28 there and this little stand will candy
15:32 stands you can peruse the hot mustard is
15:35 for sale individually for $5 coffee mugs
15:38 for $10 Pat's $14 what if I should get a
15:42 shirt or not I have a lot of t-shirts
15:44 but you kind of can never have too many
15:47 oh look at this tote bags as well I'm
15:52 gonna opt out of the shirts but it's
15:55 good they know they have them a little
15:57 mascot there a bobblehead mascot oh it
16:01 says that the bobblehead is no longer
16:02 available display only oh here's some
16:06 nails from the original building and
16:09 they have some pins and patches as well
16:11 and you can see just how busy it's
16:13 gotten now this line is very lengthy a
16:16 nice stained-glass window there check
16:19 that out that's pretty it's pretty cool
16:22 and this is this is amazing as train
16:26 went right over
16:28 but that's that's right here in the same
16:30 neighborhood the train just went right
