0:04 the Sun is now rising in the East
0:04 heading west I just crossed the state
0:08 line the New Mexico
0:10 welcome everyone Adam the whoo here
0:13 today number seven of my cross-country
0:16 journey into Americana the back roads
0:21 less traveled areas staying off major
0:24 thoroughfares just checking out the
0:26 nooks and crannies of this great US of A
0:33 there was no there was no sign coming in
0:37 from this direction it's either been
0:38 removed stolen who knows let's get in
0:44 there I'm inviting you to join me shall
0:46 you getting a general overview by
0:49 looking at the road atlas made my entry
0:51 point right around here where that 83 is
0:56 on the line a meander across the bottom
0:59 portions you see the sheer magnitude of
1:05 this entire proximity not gonna hit all
1:08 of it just the areas right around in
1:13 this section got a lot of ground to
1:17 cover today can't do too much
1:19 dilly-dally
1:32 the town of mal Jamar this is the
1:32 Welcome Center and the church there in a
1:34 distance in the window is a tattered
1:38 American flag
1:53 we are still in oil territory
1:53 see the pumps out there a couple of them
1:56 moving but a few of them are just
1:59 sitting still there's also a fire
2:02 burning out of that post there's a lot
2:07 going on over there some sort of power
2:09 grid station some sort
2:19 got some relics here over this fence
2:19 line classic vehicles sitting under the
2:24 elements
3:06 or crop Dustin
3:33 very good size sculptures here in this
3:33 downtown area a nice shot of the Western
3:37 Wear Bill then behind him
3:39 this monument honors and depicts the
3:42 cowboy lifestyle of the 1880s a tribute
3:45 to those with an independent spirit who
3:47 were determined to make their way
3:48 through the difficult conditions of this
3:50 territory he's waving his pistol high
3:55 six-shooter out on the plains no big
4:02 skyscrapers there this theater looking
4:04 pretty sweet plays brand-new movies but
4:08 still has this nostalgic vibe neon
4:11 included above this fountain is the
4:14 recreation of a 1950s drilling rig a lot
4:17 of workers on there and to the left or
4:20 to gentlemen that are having a
4:21 discussion on top of a hood of a truck
4:24 you know it's a serious conversation
4:26 when the hands start flailing we get
4:29 down to business
4:31 those who operated these rigs back then
4:34 were given the name the roughneck crew
4:38 that's them right there
4:55 you can kind of see the architecture
4:55 starting to change this is called the
4:57 hope store it's also a craft shop and
5:01 there there wasn't a whole lot back
5:05 there that was the community of hope not
5:09 the only business in town best I can
5:12 tell the terrain is definitely starting
5:15 to change quickly some elevation hills
5:21 and even some mountains even a little
5:25 River down there this popped up out of
5:28 nowhere it is desolate out here hello
5:44 was surprised to see this little store
5:44 set up here and they are open
5:58 attached to this also is a petting zoo
5:58 and they said I could wander around and
6:01 look at some of the animals hello
6:06 captain want a little food you want a
6:11 little food there get a little food get
6:15 a little food might be a little easier
6:18 if I just dump it in here you probably
6:19 like that better huh
6:21 there you go get it down there can you
6:25 reach it oh you got this all figured out
6:28 they're looking it up there with your
6:30 tongue what about if I just dump it in
6:32 here yeah and then you go down low
6:35 that'd be easier for you right one a
6:42 little bit here I'll put it right there
6:44 you go just just dig in there just dig
6:46 in just dig in there yeah what are you
6:50 all staring at waiting on something you
6:53 waiting on me get your head out of there
6:57 get your there you go look at your head
6:59 stuck in there take a little bit just go
7:02 come on
7:03 oh there you go just have a did a little
7:05 nibble there you're safe some save some
7:07 for some of your friends have a little
7:09 nibble move on here you go you want a
7:12 little nibble Nikko gets get a little
7:14 get a little tape oh you already had
7:16 some give a look give a little guy his
7:18 piece
7:29 the restroom facilities are located
7:29 right here amongst it all what you doing
7:34 just chillin looks like that's kind of
7:39 the consensus of of everyone out here
7:45 having a lazy day huh looks like you got
7:48 plenty of chavalier to keep you busy
7:51 yeah I know that's what I'm saying
7:56 hey no push it picked up a little snack
8:00 for myself as well roasted and salted
8:02 jumbo corn mmm
8:09 probably throw wash my hands first also
8:15 in need of a fill-up gas is required
8:21 ASAP
8:24 come on gas station rear your head drink
8:27 up drink up as an added bonus this
8:33 police has free coffee the may Hill
8:36 store that's awesome I understand that
8:40 no smoking but is the cell phone policy
8:42 still a thing and is that really a cell
8:47 phone I think I may have just stepped
8:52 into the twilight zone
8:54 doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo up the
9:00 ways a bit is Cloudcroft where they have
9:03 adorned their dumpsters with these
9:04 murals the sign lets us know some of the
9:07 different grades we'll be going through
9:10 on the way down a good thing about this
9:14 is you so choose you don't even have to
9:16 accelerate just coast at your own
9:18 leisure tap the brake occasionally and
9:21 just coast it's pretty good views from
9:24 up here too even though I've already
9:27 about halfway down still pretty high up
9:29 you can see where the road runs right
9:32 along the side of the rock to the left
9:35 pretty majestic at another overlook
9:38 looking back at where I was just
9:39 standing if I pan this direction just a
9:42 bit you can see just how expansive
9:51 made it back down to normal elevation
9:51 first thing I see is this train car
9:54 sitting there abandoned White Sands
9:58 National Monument
9:59 that's something I've never seen with my
10:02 own eyes check that out the cost is $10
10:07 to get in I think that's too bad of a
10:09 deal it's run by the National Park
10:12 Service not something you would expect
10:15 to find way out here usually an ocean is
10:19 attached the beach isn't New Mexico who
10:26 knew look at this
10:36 it's requested that you stay on the
10:36 boardwalk instead of walking on the
10:39 dunes astronauts can see this from space
10:45 it's pretty neat after walking this
10:48 entire length from the parking area I've
10:52 reached the end point of where I'm
10:54 allowed to traverse this is where you
11:00 are to look out on the horizon and just
11:03 get a feel for the entire section kind
11:09 of expecting to hear the roar and
11:11 crashing of waves but there are not kind
11:17 of messes with your senses a little bit
11:19 it's also noticeably brighter at least
11:22 it seems like it the Sun must bounce off
11:24 the dunes and right back at you I'm no
11:27 scientist but just seems like it's seems
11:30 like it's brighter the paved section of
11:32 the street ends right down there
11:33 and you are allowed to drive on the sand
11:38 not the dunes per se but the road seems
11:43 to be less weeds in this section you can
11:48 see where the drivable portion has that
11:50 direction just like that it's gone
12:05 it's very loud from the drilling that's
12:05 taking place but I want to peek just
12:08 through this barbed wire and take a look
12:11 at that prospector
12:18 with this trusty fuel walking through
12:18 the desert this shovel probably a
12:22 canteen full of water or maybe even a
12:25 little something extra
12:30 I really like this
12:44 what size glass of water would you need
12:44 to cool that down that is that is a huge
12:48 chili pepper you consume that might not
12:53 have a good even have a bad night I
12:55 think this could be the first water
12:57 tower I've seen on this trip that didn't
13:00 have a town name but the state logo yeah
13:05 I think I think it might be if I've seen
13:08 another one I've totally slipped my mind
13:28 some new trees are gonna be springing up
13:28 there soon cut the PVC pipes and then
13:33 the little twigs going down them into
13:38 the ground like row after row after row
13:42 of them located in Deming no no this
13:47 trains not reserved for the Chief of
13:49 Police it's because I'm in the parking
13:51 lot next to the building the police
13:53 station
13:54 that's why mate you may have been
13:57 confused by that the Chief of Police is
14:00 not it's not going to be driving this
14:01 locomotive
14:13 some animals partial to this landscape
14:16 they had the names up top of the coyotes
14:18 foxes bobcats falcons owls and hawks but
14:23 the birds I'm not a hundred percent sure
14:26 on I'm thinking maybe one of them is a
14:30 roadrunner I'm probably incorrect on
14:33 this yeah I think I'm wrong this
14:39 downtown crossroads centerpiece not only
14:42 is here for looks but it's also active
14:45 water is being emitted from the top
14:50 portion down to the bottom we didn't
14:58 notice that at first I like walk closer
15:01 that's gonna do it for today made it up
15:05 the road a bit more to lordsville which
15:09 is pretty close to the next state line
