0:06 today's episode is going to focus on a
0:08 place that started here in Southern
0:10 California and has branched out to well
0:13 over 100 locations most prominently here
0:17 on the west coast and I have never sat
0:20 foot inside this particular place nor
0:24 gotten takeout or consumed any of their
0:26 items that's gonna change heading to
0:29 Garden Grove on the bike inviting you to
0:33 join me shalyah battery's all charged up
0:37 switching everything over to the
0:38 backpack and off I go I have just
0:41 crossed over the town or city line where
0:46 the subject matter is it's very
0:48 interesting this is Chapman Ave but if
0:51 you go off just to the opposite side of
0:54 the street just a short link short
0:59 amount of distance is Anaheim and
1:02 directly behind me is orange but this is
1:05 Garden Grove
1:07 it's all in very very close proximity to
1:10 each other just cruise through here for
1:13 a moment the structure at one point was
1:16 known as the Crystal Cathedral recently
1:19 they have changed the name it's not
1:23 called that anymore but it was for years
1:25 and years and years Wow look at that I
1:29 notice that is impressive right
1:42 I was just informed I'm another not
1:42 supposed to be cruising around on the
1:43 bike I could walk through here but you
1:46 just they just don't want you mounted on
1:48 the bicycle make sense
1:52 this tower gosh Dan's probably 7 8
1:58 storeys tall I had to guess
2:09 the helicopter going by the grounds are
2:09 very decorative and well manicured see
2:13 they even have some statues over there
2:15 well that's not a statute that's a
2:17 that's a person walking around I've been
2:20 going through sunglasses pretty quickly
2:23 lately yesterday morning I broke the one
2:26 pair I've been wearing for a few months
2:27 gone yet another set and those I have
2:32 lost so right now I do not own a pair of
2:36 sunglasses so to rectify that throughout
2:38 the course of the day and stop somewhere
2:40 and purchase one purchase one it's
2:44 overcast up not too bad arrived at the
2:46 corner of Chapman current temperature 68
2:50 degrees not too bad and hey stir or
2:55 Hastur pasture or hay stir h AST ER the
3:02 place I'm going is right here on this
3:05 corner more or less like
3:09 4050 feet from the corner seems as if
3:12 the bike lane starts right here there
3:14 wasn't one pack on that other that other
3:17 block but as I continued down Chapman
3:20 here is where I'm going
3:26 Winchell's open 24 hours there is a
3:30 little splash of something there on the
3:32 concrete but I have I have connected my
3:38 bike up to that and here's a payphone I
3:40 don't know if it's in working order I'm
3:42 not even going to attempt to to try it
3:44 but the phone itself just kind of
3:47 dangling there so I'm gonna say probably
3:50 probably not also referred to as wind
3:54 chills donut house they also have coffee
3:56 which I'm going to get some coffee to
3:58 sip on as well and maybe even some sort
4:01 of a lunch I'd I want to go to too
4:03 overboard also side note they will give
4:06 you 14 Donuts not a baker's dozen which
4:08 is 13 not a 12 which is an actual dozen
4:11 but 14 if you get a dozen I will not be
4:15 partaking in that amount however that's
4:18 a little too many the last donut place I
4:19 went to which has been a few weeks ago I
4:22 ate a couple at the location took the
4:25 rest home and they lasted me about a
4:27 week I put them in the refrigerator so I
4:29 just say you can freeze them I did not
4:31 do so I put them in the refrigerator and
4:33 they still taste it pretty good of seven
4:35 or eight days later but I won't be doing
4:38 that again I'm just going to get one
4:39 maybe two and some other menu items
4:44 slightly old-school lettering there that
4:48 signage has probably been there for
4:50 quite some time right there on the side
4:52 of the overhang as well as this one a
4:56 beacon of sugary goodness off of the
5:01 thoroughfare
5:11 at any hour of the day day or night rain
5:11 or shine always open noticing on the
5:16 side of the window are you know they
5:18 have muffins
5:19 they have wraps and they even have
5:21 something called a meal deal maybe a
5:23 combo of some sort of multiple items and
5:30 over on the far end newspaper racks a a
5:34 bunch of them not only the Orange County
5:37 Register because I'm in the OC but also
5:39 the LA Times Los Angeles and just
5:45 looking upward
5:54 scrolling across into the donut house
5:56 always open always fresh if you can read
6:00 that there on the side of the glass
6:02 quite an assortment of products up there
6:05 also have bagels with different toppings
6:08 and meats and cheeses on them as well as
6:11 quite a few beverages I might end up
6:15 getting a fake bagel and the doughnut
6:18 there's a lot of doughnuts to choose
6:20 from yeah I think that works
6:35 okay you know what I'm thinking he can
6:35 maybe that one there
6:40 that's the one I'm gonna get aunt a
6:40 bagel and a coffee I have chosen the
6:44 bagel there in the middle well middle
6:46 shelf this is pretty good to you it's
6:49 like
6:51 of fresh-made juice maybe
6:54 or shoes
6:56 I got a call there that's supposed to be
6:59 footprints that it almost looks like
7:00 something out of Star Wars like a strike
7:03 doesn't it kind of in a in a way
7:09 they have already got my coffee and
7:11 other other item in the bag they're just
7:13 finishing up the prepared bagel now
7:16 while waiting I'll peruse the rest over
7:19 what's in this case
7:26 you're wondering what other items they
7:26 have
7:34 okay thank you oh it's a good thing they
7:38 have this little sleeve on the side of
7:40 this that is that is a toasty beverage
7:44 can't quite show you what I got loaded
7:50 everything up in the backpack kind of
7:52 unlock the bike and go ride down to a
7:54 park which i think is less than a mile
7:57 away
7:57 hey maybe maybe half a mile I'm not sure
8:01 it's just I'm gonna catch I'm gonna be
8:03 holding this while I ride that's gonna
8:05 be a challenge I can pull it off let me
8:09 reiterate this coffee is hot and it's an
8:13 absolute fail that I have not purchased
8:14 a basket for the front of this thing nor
8:17 a cup holder I want to take a bike path
8:20 through here a bike route but there
8:22 isn't one
8:27 sometimes I'll do the sidewalks but I
8:28 believe it is frowned upon so I'm just
8:31 kind of cruising along I might have this
8:33 light traffic whoo this coffee is hot
8:39 even through the little holder whoo it's
8:41 toasting a little noisy up here

9:10 see the logo there with the three
9:12 oranges in the middle of the logo
9:17 so I'm gonna find a spot you can faintly
9:20 hear the gentleman working on the road
9:22 over there pretty good patch of land
9:26 here at this park very expansive and I
9:31 have procured a picnic table
9:36 I got the whole picnic area to myself
9:38 there are two open here and there are
9:41 two open there however if you go to this
9:46 section come to the shade which really
9:51 don't need too much shade today because
9:53 there is a little bit of overcast cloud
9:57 cover but this is all kind of fenced off
10:01 and if you have hot coals dispersed of
10:04 them right there and I don't have hot
10:09 coals but I do have piping hot coffee
10:14 and I realize while I was cruising along
10:17 with this the reason for that I did not
10:19 put any cream no sugar either but no no
10:23 milk no creamer which sometimes helps to
10:26 cool it down thankful for this this
10:29 right here whew very thankful for this I
10:33 was gonna get a couple bottles of water
10:35 as well but they were out of water so no
10:39 go on the water and this is what we're
10:44 dealing with since nineteen and forty
10:48 eight stated right there look how happy
10:52 that guy is right there in the middle of
10:55 the w it's got a little a little chef's
10:59 cap on and the signage on the front of
11:03 each of the establishments is that which
11:06 has the piping hot coffee the smoldering
11:11 smoldering goodness protruding off of
11:13 the the ground-up beans that are
11:17 creating that caffeinated delectable
11:21 item 65 years over 65 years of service
11:27 and inside here is up they gave me the
11:31 wrong I didn't I requested a different
11:34 but maybe I guess I was gonna work this
11:39 works I am not picky when it comes to
11:42 two Donuts in fact you know what I do
11:44 need some sprinkles in my life so maybe
11:46 you know what they might have given me
11:48 this and charge me for the other one so
11:50 I cannot complain get a little sprinkle
11:52 action I thought I was just getting the
11:54 the glazed with the frosting guys but
11:58 all in all it doesn't really matter this
12:00 will be going into my tummy and I will
12:01 be very very content with it I might
12:06 have I might have honestly I might have
12:07 chosen wrong there are some napkins down
12:09 in here and we get the napkins out of
12:12 there and see if you can okay it's
12:14 really kind of hard to tell it's like
12:16 it's like a little delicious present
12:19 okay this might be it this might not be
12:21 the best option but I'm gonna flip it
12:23 upside down dump it out it held together
12:28 it held together well ooh here's a
12:31 different logo still has the chef's cap
12:35 balancing four doughnuts on top that's
12:38 it that's right there is an
12:39 accomplishment look at that and get the
12:42 hands wide open saying come on in I have
12:46 prepared some supper for your sweet
12:49 tooth I got something for your sweet
12:53 tooth I don't know if that's really
12:57 I don't know if it's a good imitation at
12:59 home but I'm just that's how I'm
13:00 perceiving is that mr. Winchell it could
13:05 be mr. Winchell it is the donut house
13:10 yeah I'm just I'm gonna assume it's not
13:13 always good to assume but I'm just I'm
13:15 doing so in this case I am using the
13:17 plastic bag that they that they gave me
13:19 that I carried it in kind of as a little
13:22 makeshift plate if you will oh now I got
13:26 like a lot of sprawling makeshift plate
13:29 goodness this has a little bit of cheese
13:32 they cut it in half which is good I did
13:35 not request that but looking back I
13:37 really I'm glad they did I need you
13:39 start asking at every place even though
13:41 most places do that jalapenos I said not
13:44 to go to hot and heavy on the jalapenos
13:46 but they put a healthy amount in there
13:49 which not having the the water and they
13:53 also say you're not supposed to drink
13:54 when you do something that's kind of
13:56 spicy you're not supposed to have water
13:57 anyway so maybe the coffee will help
13:59 just a little bit this is a ham and
14:01 cheese they said I could get a croissant
14:04 or a bagel I went with the bagel option
14:09 kind of wishing I did have a pair of
14:11 shades on even though the Sun is not
14:14 really permeating into my retinas it
14:16 would be nice to have it just kind of
14:18 feel unusual without the Maude even with
14:20 like a little glare I'm doing it
14:50 not too bad though it's a nice mixture
14:50 with everything with the ham and the
14:52 cheese one thing that's obviously
14:56 missing is any sort of any sort of item
15:01 in the middle as far as condiments go
15:05 know sort look it's just very it's
15:10 really dry in there that honestly might
15:12 be my fault I did not ask for anything a
15:15 little mayonnaise maybe a little mustard
15:18 a little spicy mustard what else would
15:21 go on up a breakfast bagel
15:23 it's definitely noticeably there's
15:26 definitely noticeably something missing
15:28 in between the bread patties as stated
15:32 most likely my fault on that one other
15:36 than that it's really good I like the
15:37 little poppy seeds they are or sesame
15:41 seeds you said they were sesame seeds

16:04 of jalapenos this thing is still warm
16:16 oh my gosh I could feel like I feel like
16:16 going through there
16:26 oh I'm so used to cream and sugar my
16:26 plan
16:31 I learned this recently last month and
16:31 another donut shop that this sugar yeah
16:36 that's what I want to do sugar from this
17:08 the sugar from the Dona kind of melds
17:08 into the coffee we don't notice if there
17:11 is sands cream and sands sugar which I
17:15 probably incorrectly stating that which
17:18 I think I believe it means no sugar no
17:22 cream so henceforth when I'm getting a
17:27 doughnut which is rare maybe once or
17:30 twice a month who knows how long the
17:32 series gotta go it might end up being
17:33 more than that but in my regular life I
17:36 only get doughnuts maybe once or twice a
17:40 month if that and down the road I'm
17:44 gonna start doing that if I get
17:45 doughnuts and a coffee which is the
17:47 perfect combo I'm not gonna get cream
17:49 and sugar in said caffeinated beverage
17:53 that's heated because it's a good
17:57 mixture going with the bagel however I
18:01 don't know if that was the best choice
18:05 well the bagels good the toys meeting
18:10 unsweetened coffee and a bagel it's a
18:15 challenge for me but the doughnut and
18:19 the coffee goes well
18:28 next time
18:28 we'll have them lather something in
18:30 between these two pieces of bread
18:40 start to get used to jalapenos I welcome
18:40 a lot and they have had them
18:59 I'm starting to really enjoy the flavor
18:59 of them more than ever
19:02 and they're not they don't have too much
19:04 kick as long as they're done as small
19:07 that's a jalapeno face
19:18 okay it has some kick have some real
19:18 kick
19:26 not the best mixture when it comes to
19:26 not the best mixture straight jalapeno I
19:29 like that
19:31 and unsweetened untarnished by flavorful
19:34 goodness coffee not a good mixture
19:45 I liked it better when it's all jalapeno
19:45 by itself I wouldn't drink the coffee
19:46 combined I'm learning
20:16 fresh-squeezed orange juice I believe I
20:16 could have got that the apple juice was
20:19 in a container I could have easily
20:20 tossed it in the backpack
20:27 I didn't
20:27 they say hindsight is 20/20
20:41 it's been a while since I consumed a
20:41 bagel
20:48 the meat that's on this and the cheese
20:48 is really really freaking good varied
20:51 very tasty I'm starting to feel the eyes
20:57 watering a little bit sinuses kicking up
21:00 a notch because of
21:11 because of the little jalapeno is down
21:11 in there look at that little bastion of
21:16 goodness
21:59 don't even think about it geese or
21:59 gooses or ducks
22:07 they smell what I'm eating all the items
22:07 are really good on their own accord
22:11 the downfall was only getting this as
22:16 the beverage and not some other sort of
22:19 cold liquid or at least flavorful liquid
22:23 to go with that bagel bagel was great
22:26 coffee is great this is the point that I
22:30 have really been looking forward to
22:32 where as I was mentioning a moment ago I
22:36 can consume the rest of this doughnut
22:39 and it will act as the sugar for for
22:43 that
23:05 worth it worth going through all that
23:05 trouble to get to the crescendo oh yeah
23:11 that is a hack and a half
23:28 the donuts are awesome very fresh very
23:28 soft
23:29 I like a soft dough no there's some
23:33 places that have some very decorative
23:36 type of items so as you bite into them
23:39 they don't really taste great but the
23:42 novelty of seeing them these taste
23:45 really good and still warm even after
23:49 that bike ride
23:49 about half a mile over to this park
23:58 still a little toasty which is good and
23:58 soft Cheers
24:17 that's how it's done as almost bitter as
24:17 this was the whole rest of the meal
24:20 polishing it off there at the end with
24:23 that overly sweet piece of food mixed in
24:28 with this
24:28 still kind of nestling around the in my
24:31 mouth and the taste buds yeah all in all
24:37 would visit that establishment again
24:40 they're celebrating over 50 well over 50
24:44 in fact 65 did years they have been
24:48 going strong one of the West Coast might
24:53 still be true one of the west coast's
24:56 largest doughnut chains however I have
24:59 heard by more than one folks
25:05 plural plural eyes more than a large
25:09 amount of folks they are not as
25:11 prevalent
25:17 revelant they are not setting a
25:17 precedence a relevancy like they once
25:19 were and some are not around however
25:23 there are still quite a few I did a
25:24 little search around Orange County Los
25:27 Angeles and there are more than a dozen
25:31 more than a baker's dozen don't quote me
25:35 on this but maybe even a Winchell's
25:37 dozen which is 14 yes I have neither
25:41 confirmed nor denied this what I
25:44 wouldn't say it's a fact but I've heard
25:46 since I was a youth that it was a
25:48 statement that so my friends would
25:50 always say little facts and figures that
25:52 kind of float around in the universe
25:55 that I don't know if it's a half or
25:58 maybe a full loaf of bread can be
26:01 compacted into a bagel and when I when I
26:04 first heard this I thought that's gotta
26:05 be true because a bagel is nice and
26:09 compressed it might be that's gonna do
