0:02 today's adventure brings us to Hollywood
0:02 California starting off here with a very
0:06 good view of the iconic sign we're in
0:10 1932 a young actress by the name of peg
0:13 entwistle leapt off the H she did not
0:19 survive which was her intention which
0:22 has caused her to go down in history as
0:24 the only person to perish by plummeting
0:27 from this structure
0:29 welcome everyone Adam the Wu here my
0:32 goal today is to basically retrace her
0:35 steps on once she moved to Los Angeles
0:38 the events leading up to that evening
0:42 and beyond and I want to show you all
0:45 the different spots around the city that
0:48 you can visit on your own or vicariously
0:51 through this video join me shall you
0:56 heading over to where some people say
0:58 peg first lived when she moved to LA
1:01 there's not a lot of evidence and proof
1:05 backing this up but figure I'll check it
1:09 out anyhow this once was the studio club
1:12 were lots of starlets once resided
1:15 everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Barbara
1:18 Eden even Sharon Tate live behind these
1:21 walls it was placed on the National
1:23 Registry of historical places in 1979
1:26 and even though it's not currently used
1:28 for its original purpose the YMCA still
1:32 owns it
1:33 you never know she could have possibly
1:35 set up residence here just for a short
1:37 while even though there's no proper
1:39 documentation online about it I could
1:43 see it happening this is a printout of a
1:47 pamphlet they gave the residents upon
1:49 being here where I'm located is right in
1:52 the middle and you can see how it
1:55 stretches out with different lines
1:57 leading to all the different studios
1:59 implying that if they lived here they
2:02 might get a job at the studio at
2:05 Universal or Culver City or even
2:08 Glendale off to the far right everything
2:11 within a short distance
2:13 it's always neat to match up these old
2:15 photographs then and now in the floral
2:22 arrangement above the archways is still
2:25 here all these years later has seen
2:29 right there in this picture slightly
2:32 better view you can see the detail all
2:35 along there of the flowers small trees
2:39 out front are no longer there
2:42 of course the palm trees still are but
2:44 the two that were in front of the
2:46 entryway are gone but this little alcove
2:49 with the side entrance and stairwell
2:52 it still looks the same also back there
2:55 it is tucked away right over there about
2:59 five miles from this point heading to
3:01 the Belasco theater downtown and I'm
3:06 sitting in traffic but I got a pretty
3:07 good view of this classic truck and it
3:10 was here starting at the end of May for
3:12 about two weeks a play by the name of
3:15 the mad hopes rant that she was a part
3:18 of the same year that she passed away it
3:21 also starred Humphrey Bogart and Billy
3:23 Burke best known for The Wizard of Oz
3:26 and even though it was critically
3:28 acclaimed she wanted a taste of the big
3:31 screen she wanted to be in films which
3:34 will take us to our next spot it's gonna
3:38 stand here for a moment though and check
3:40 out the craftsmanship the side of this
3:42 building pretty cool and even more
3:46 detail on the side of this entry gate
3:48 the wrought iron and concrete that is
3:52 formulated and toothed little faces that
3:57 stretch all the way up the side I don't
4:01 make them like this much anymore
4:02 commuting north out of downtown towards
4:05 Hollywood proper where our story
4:08 continues her break came when radio
4:10 pictures which eventually became RKO
4:13 Pictures cast her in a movie by the name
4:15 of 13 women this was her big chance her
4:19 name and lights her face on the silver
4:22 screen in that building still remains
4:26 production facilities way back then and
4:30 current day as you can see looks
4:34 basically the same with the exception of
4:36 the radio tower emitting from the top of
4:39 the globe but the earth is still up
4:41 there this property and this building is
4:44 now owned by Paramount Studios but
4:47 before the movies final release they
4:49 showed it to some test audiences and
4:52 ended up deciding they needed to cut
4:55 some scenes most of which were hers but
4:58 the majority of what she had films was
5:01 cut from the final film which progresses
5:05 the story directly towards
5:10 the Hollywood side
5:13 on Friday September 16th she walked up
5:17 beechwood Drive and I'm currently
5:19 standing on after telling her uncle who
5:23 she had been staying with at this home
5:26 that she was going to the store when in
5:30 reality she had other plants in such
5:34 close proximity to the final destination
5:37 you have to wonder how often or for how
5:41 long she contemplated doing it while she
5:44 was staying here certainly not very
5:46 discrete step out the front door and
5:48 it's right there in your face I should
5:52 probably get out of the road dog that
5:53 there's a truck coming as you can tell
5:55 this is a very popular area from people
5:58 that try to get a photograph everyone
6:00 just kind of Mills about in the road it
6:03 tries to get their photograph perfectly
6:06 lined up back then the lettering spelled
6:08 out Hollywoodland used to promote a
6:11 housing development below it's the land
6:15 of course and this current day has been
6:18 removed which makes me wonder if she
6:21 would have jumped off the lva the N or
6:23 the final d with the legend be as strong
6:29 makes you wonder
6:31 but she chose the H and the reason for
6:34 that is there was a ladder accessible
6:36 around the back side that she was able
6:38 to climb and she dove headfirst off the
6:42 top of it
6:44 and you might think well that would not
6:46 injure you to the point of death but in
6:48 reality these are very very tall you can
6:51 barely see some people up on the top of
6:53 that hill which shows the size
6:57 comparison between a six-foot person and
7:01 the enormous e and height of that side
7:06 I've placed her photograph
7:08 here in this bush just below where it
7:12 happened
7:26 a little folklore here in the Hollywood
7:26 Hills some say her ghost still haunts
7:31 the premises if you believe that sort of
7:34 thing I could definitely see where
7:37 people would lean towards that some say
7:41 her perfume can be smelled in this area
7:45 at certain times of the evening not a
7:49 bad view from up here looking the
7:51 opposite direction towards Los Angeles
7:55 off in the haze it's a nice breeze up
8:01 here as well I'm gonna take this with me
8:04 because I think that would be classified
8:06 as littering the woman who found the
8:09 body wanted to remain anonymous so she
8:12 took pegs shoes the note and her jacket
8:15 and laid it on the steps of the police
8:19 department later alerting them that she
8:21 had placed them there at the base of the
8:23 entryway and as you can see quite a few
8:27 changes have happened on that corner
8:29 since then the address is the same but
8:32 the facade is considerably different
8:36 however after looking at this it appears
8:40 as if the stairwell is kind of in the
8:43 same spot yeah right there that's where
8:48 she would have laid the items of course
8:51 it's not the same stairs but the same
8:52 general vicinity the bottom of the note
8:55 was initialed PE and it was a little bit
8:58 of confusion what it stood for at first
9:00 until her uncle identified the body and
9:04 a mystery was solved the news spread as
9:07 far as New York City actress ends life
9:11 by jumping off 50-foot sign after
9:14 failure in movies the funeral would have
9:17 been held here on the left where this
9:19 apartment building now stands back then
9:22 it was home to Struthers mortuary in
9:25 fact both the buildings of this photo
9:27 are now demolished
9:29 but the mortuary was right there on the
9:33 corner of argyll and Hollywood Boulevard
9:35 that was then back in the past you know
9:39 before they demolished it and this is
9:43 now current day
9:46 slightly different look wouldn't you say
9:50 after the funeral her body was moved
9:52 just a few blocks over to a cemetery
9:55 that is now known as Hollywood Forever
9:58 there she was cremated and her ashes not
10:02 placed there that is not the final
10:05 resting place they were sent to Glendale
10:08 Ohio and laid next to her father and
10:12 this leads me to one last spot the
10:15 former Max Factor building now the
10:18 hollywood museum has a couple artifacts
10:21 pertaining to the subject matter there
10:24 it is the final piece of the puzzle that
10:29 is a chunk of the original h
10:38 and a little information has been placed
10:38 here as well with a photo of PEG stating
10:45 here on display an original piece of the
10:49 Hollywoodland sign the H before its
10:54 reconstruction in 1978 which means that
10:59 that would have been one of the last
11:02 things she saw before her death the no
11:06 she left stated quote I am afraid I am a
11:10 coward I'm sorry for everything if I had
11:13 done this a long time ago you would have
11:15 saved a lot of pain she was only twenty
11:19 four years old
11:20 rumor has it that her uncle received a
11:23 letter in the mail the next day offering
11:27 her the lead role in a play here's some
11:33 more documentation of Strothers funeral
11:37 home right there circa 1939 caddy corner
11:42 to the Pantages Hollywood Boulevard and
11:46 you can see definitely not these
11:49 security measures they have in this day
11:51 and age now there's a fence all around
11:54 it
11:56 but you could just walk right up to it
11:57 at that point completely completely
12:02 accessible to all that's gonna do it for
12:04 today if you enjoyed this video for the
