0:10 today's adventure begins in Oceanside
0:10 California at the pier
0:20 be heading southbound from this point
0:20 down to San Diego
0:31 welcome everyone Adam the whoo here I
0:31 will be retracing the steps the filming
0:33 locations a majority of them from the
0:37 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun prepare to
0:43 have your breath taken away
0:55 join me Shelley the first spot is right
0:55 along the shoreline straight ahead you
0:59 will see a house sitting all by itself
1:02 painted blue this is where a very iconic
1:07 lovemaking scene took place all the
1:11 other homes on that block have been
1:14 bulldozed but for now that has been
1:17 saved for now used to be a lot of homes
1:20 along this block but where Charlie and
1:24 maverick shared their intimate moments
1:26 is the only one left visited very often
1:30 by tourists and fans of the movie do you
1:33 think it'd be a museum by now but it's
1:35 not it's all fenced off the sign States
1:40 but the restoration is pending due to
1:43 future hotel developments that might be
1:47 happening on the site they have placed
1:50 the movie poster on the left of the
1:54 porch I'll be able to peek through where
1:57 this chain link fence has been pulled
1:59 back up that slight incline from the
2:03 beach so where Tom Cruise rode his
2:06 motorcycle turning around basically
2:10 where someone has parked their truck and
2:12 next to that stop sign
2:15 parked it here's a screenshot of what it
2:19 looked like then versus what it looks
2:21 like now goes up and knocks on the door
2:24 no one answers it's been repainted
2:27 obviously a different color but the
2:30 porch remains the same as does the
2:32 banister here on the far right it's
2:37 still the same pieces of wood from the
2:40 80s she was home however just not in the
2:43 front room he had to turn around the
2:45 side of the structure and along that
2:48 secondary porch before he realized she
2:51 was home by looking at this photo of the
2:53 time frame he used to extend way back
2:57 they built on to what is here now and
3:01 over time they compressed it back to
3:04 what is now standing but in fact it went
3:07 all the way back to that end of the
3:11 property meaning a couple scenes who
3:14 will not be able to match up however she
3:17 was sitting right there and what once
3:20 was a doorway basically where I'm now
3:23 standing is where he is in the
3:26 screenshot more or less the precise area
3:31 that he was walking past pay close
3:34 attention to the window to the right of
3:36 her head here that window can be seen on
3:42 the far right
3:45 of the back area of the home meaning
3:48 that everything to the left of the lamp
3:51 has now been torn down it's kind of hard
3:54 to get your bearings if you use your
3:56 imagination and kind of figure it out
4:00 when they had the open air conversation
4:02 on what you would think would be one of
4:04 the porches on what is now standing it
4:07 wasn't it was on a home that was back
4:09 here attached to the property that would
4:13 be this particular scene where she is
4:17 laying comfortably and he's very
4:19 attentive
4:20 after once again recently watching the
4:22 film I noticed an editing error right
4:25 here stanchions in the ground was a for
4:28 rent sign that is shown earlier in the
4:32 film as he rides off on his cycle after
4:35 that conversation I just mentioned when
4:38 technically that should not have showed
4:40 up until later it wasn't there when he
4:43 first pulled up so they obviously used a
4:46 clip from the end of the film and just
4:47 threw it in there I said neither that
4:48 riding away on the motorcycle shot it
4:52 was between these two boarded up windows
4:55 where the magic happened where the semi
4:59 awkward open mouth kissing took place
5:05 and the way I know is the baseboards
5:09 there at the bottom of the porch can be
5:12 seen out the windows notice on either
5:16 side of the frame are those two windows
5:18 and if you peek out you can see the
5:22 porch itself right there and those
5:26 boards still exist that's what you're
5:30 looking out from the opposite
5:32 perspective while standing here I talked
5:35 to one of the locals and he said they
5:37 are moving this a couple blocks away
5:39 it's gonna be saved and completely
5:42 renovated and that should happen in
5:44 another year year and a half let's just
5:47 cross our fingers and hope it's true
5:49 it's definitely a big piece of
5:51 pop-culture movie history and who knows
5:55 maybe when that point comes it'll be
5:57 open to the general public and we'll get
5:59 to peek inside time will tell but for
6:03 now it's time to move on to the next
6:05 spot heading southbound to San Diego bow
6:12 bow bow bow bow bow bow
6:16 bow-bow bow-bow bow-bow bow-bow
6:22 I feel like I'm gonna have that song
6:23 stuck in my head the rest that I get out
6:26 of my head song get out of my head if
6:29 you've ever lost that loving feeling
6:31 I recommend showing up here to the
6:33 Lafayette hotel we're in one of the
6:36 rooms you can still hear the faint
6:38 sounds of reminiscent past the bar
6:41 itself was set up right here under this
6:43 circular pattern on the roof and what
6:46 they call the Mississippi room and if
6:49 you pay close attention to the air
6:51 ventilation system and the architecture
6:56 of that beam you'll notice it is
7:00 precisely the same where he picked up
7:03 that microphone and started singing they
7:07 built a fake wall to put those windows
7:10 in the background and if it wasn't for
7:12 those vents that I showed a moment ago
7:14 right up there in the corner it'd be
7:17 hard to pinpoint that this was the spot
7:20 but that's where the bar was same angle
7:23 camera pointed in the same exact
7:26 direction look very very closely above
7:29 her head is a beam that attaches to the
7:31 wall you can see the patterns carved
7:35 into it this is that very beam it is
7:39 possible that they did not build the
7:41 windows and a fake partition but maybe
7:43 they've just remodeled this section
7:45 since those days hard to tell and if you
7:48 ever pay this place a visit the room is
7:51 located down these stairs in the
7:53 basement just adjacent to the entryway
7:58 and with that gonna make my way down the
8:02 road just a bit to the next location and
8:06 now down into Liberty Station
8:11 it was across this way that she in a
8:14 meeting gave her thoughts on Mavericks
8:16 flight performance which he wasn't too
8:18 happy about as he walked out he was
8:22 completely ignoring her as she tried to
8:24 talk to him even though quite a few
8:27 buildings have these very same pillars
8:30 in this neighborhood the way I figured
8:33 it was this precise one was off in the
8:35 distance you can see that doorway
8:39 however in this day and age doesn't look
8:41 like that doorway is accessible at the
8:45 moment right here is where his
8:47 motorcycle was parked she was trying to
8:51 get his attention but he wanted nothing
8:53 to do with that whatsoever cranking up
8:59 the engine so he couldn't hear I can't
9:03 hear you
9:04 you certainly can get some 30 plus year
9:07 old vibes by standing right here pretty
9:13 neat this is also where she drove off in
9:16 a hurry to catch him
9:19 notice the building there on the left as
9:21 seen here
9:24 it's a high-speed pursuit whoa
9:40 also a little later on in the film after
9:40 goose dies some somber moments as she
9:43 drops him off in the car and he walks
9:47 once again next to these pillars
10:02 the airplanes flying overhead is really
10:02 adding to the ambience
10:14 in route now closer to downtown that I
10:14 was before right in the heart of the
10:17 city directly under this overpass at the
10:22 top of this hill was where they shared
10:24 their very first kiss he was speeding
10:28 upward at a very high rate of speed she
10:30 was close behind darting in and out of
10:34 traffic trying to catch up he zooms past
10:37 this home nice view of the ships off in
10:42 the harbor and the water that's what it
10:45 looked like
10:46 back then you can faintly see a blur of
10:49 him on the cycle there on the far right
10:52 that home still has the wooden fence
10:54 even though the paint job is then
10:57 changed just a little bit other than
11:00 that looks pretty much the same oh there
11:03 goes another plane
11:13 and in the next frame quickly moving
11:13 past this intersection the cityscape has
11:16 changed a little bit in the background
11:18 and the some of the palm trees have been
11:21 removed
11:26 but there it is but she's not taking no
11:26 for an answer
11:27 also barreling through the stop sign all
11:32 traffic laws when you're in love pretty
11:36 much are meaningless over the last few
11:38 decades this tree has grown considerably
11:42 and where this truck is now stationed is
11:45 where her car skid repeatedly utility
11:49 did a few takes judging by the marks on
11:51 the ground and it was right there she
11:54 confessed she was falling for them as
11:57 shocked as he was he enjoyed the idea he
12:02 leaned in for a kiss and the rest as
12:05 they say is history
12:08 movie history to be more precise and
12:11 over this shoulder used to be a concrete
12:13 slab a wall of sorts has been removed
12:16 things change over time you have to
12:19 accept that but it is always fun to use
12:22 some clues to match up different spots
12:24 it's pretty dang cool that this tree
12:27 remains
12:34 just where it happened Bam Bam Bam Bam
12:34 Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam take the
12:42 people walking by I think I'm a little
12:45 weird for embracing a tree there on Bam
12:50 Bam Bam Bam
12:52 bamm-bamm just walk away just walk away
13:01 nothing to see here still one
13:01 destination left to go the plateau the
13:06 pinnacle of this adventure over here
13:09 across the railroad tracks is a place
13:12 known as Kansas City barbecue if you
13:15 ever said it would be when pigs fly that
13:18 I would visit the sleazy bar from Top
13:20 Gun
13:21 well this moment is about to happen even
13:25 though a few years ago a terrible fire
13:28 burned out the inside the structure
13:31 still is exactly the same the walls and
13:33 the facade few of the props were also
13:37 destroyed but they've gotten new ones
13:39 from what I heard and they have properly
13:41 embraced the theming of the movie to the
13:44 fullest possible extent oh yes this is
13:48 definitely happening
13:59 oh wow looks pretty much exactly the
13:59 same that's where he was sitting at the
14:00 end of the movie and she dropped the
14:02 quarter in the jukebox slot to play that
14:06 lovin feelin to bring back the memories
14:08 just to give a little perspective that
14:10 that's the screenshot right there on the
14:12 menu at state that the way it was chosen
14:14 was the location scout stopped in here
14:16 for a beer and that's how he chose this
14:18 particular bar they were able to save
14:20 this poster that scene there when I say
14:23 they fully embrace it I mean it up this
14:26 is supposed to be the other way I think
14:28 it's pretty amazing they still have the
14:29 piano that games played a great pause of
14:32 fire on how cool is that I never
14:34 realized the kid that played gooses son
14:36 was played by two twins originally the
14:38 piano was placed right over there it's
14:40 been moved but that's where that iconic
14:42 scene took place and they've even placed
14:44 a photograph right above where it's not
14:48 the same jukebox obviously but they
14:49 place another one in the same spot where
14:51 tom was standing next to her and there's
14:53 the doorway where he turned around and
14:55 Charlie was waiting I guess I should
14:58 have said spoiler alert but now it's
15:00 it's been a few years you should have
15:01 seen it by now just think it was right
15:03 here amongst these walls that meg Ryan
15:05 said take me to bed or lose me forever
15:09 quite an offer dan dan dan dan dan dun
15:14 dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun
15:21 dun duh didn't
15:25 dan dan dan dan dan dan dan dan dan dan
15:29 dan dan dan and
