0:54 the outskirts of town
0:55 and i have some things on some lists
0:57 that i want to see and you guys have a
0:58 few ideas
1:00 so we're just going to have a mishmash
1:02 of things around macon georgia
1:06 you guys left your piping hot
1:07 caffeinated beverages in your car yeah
1:10 go get
1:11 fam
1:12 i'm inviting you to join me and josh and
1:15 shall you thank you
1:17 nailed it and this is going to be very
1:19 music based a lot of music history here
1:23 in macon but there will be i'll pepper
1:24 in some other things too
1:26 you know it's just going to be i don't
1:27 really know what i'm what's going to
1:28 happen but it's going to be fun
1:30 as a logging truck goes by the archway
1:33 here at gateway park
1:39 a little bit of trash build up
1:39 looking for the otis reading
1:41 statue
1:42 which i thought would be right here
1:48 there's some names
1:48 inscribed along the the brickwork
1:55 almost looks as if looks as if it could
1:55 have been right here
2:04 was this where the otis reading
2:04 statue could have been
2:11 and a lot of flooding has taken place
2:11 got quite a bit of rain
2:13 in this area recently
2:15 and
2:16 this little walkout
2:18 here
2:23 it's all flooded
2:23 any ideas
2:25 any clue where this otis redding
2:28 is
2:39 i know it's got to be around here
2:39 somewhere all right i found a photo it
2:41 was in fact in that area where the brick
2:43 is all torn up
2:44 you can see
2:46 a little sidewalk down below there and
2:48 right over there is where the flooding
2:50 has taken place with us the otis redding
2:52 is gone
2:53 where the heck we're doing a little
2:55 colombo like research skills now
2:58 you are they're doing a renovation for
3:01 this whole area they're doing a
3:02 renovation any any info about where it's
3:05 been moved to
3:07 it's supposed to take eight weeks
3:11 so strike one
3:14 well shoot
3:18 you know what
3:18 he may have gone to frisco
3:20 to sit by the dock on the bay that makes
3:22 sense because he left his home in
3:24 georgia he was from georgia here
3:27 that's where he went
3:30 dang i really wanted to see that okay
3:32 josh just found an article online that
3:34 said he's going to be removed and placed
3:36 under lock and key
3:39 until how long is the renovation going
3:40 to go for eight weeks eight
3:45 a weeks so six more weeks
3:48 so you have to do a follow-up on this
3:50 this is your guy's homework assignment
3:53 you got it
3:55 i have a microphone a golden well not a
3:58 golden but a very a very illuminated
4:01 microphone here
4:03 in the middle
4:10 as well
4:10 has got these lips that are singing
4:12 across the way there is the macon
4:14 coliseum
4:16 where a lot of historical
4:18 music acts performed over the years
4:25 got some music notes up here
4:25 as
4:26 well singing in the microphone
4:35 and the saxophone
4:42 i gotta go over the bridge
4:42 and go show the
4:44 little coliseum is it still called the
4:48 macon coliseum
4:51 elvis performed there
4:53 a few times back in the day
4:55 very cool and crisp out today got a
4:57 puddle accumulating there
5:00 underneath the bridge
5:20 elvis was here in 72
5:20 75 76 77 as well a number of times
5:26 very retro looking at least on this side
5:29 approaching the ticket center no events
5:32 today obviously
5:33 it's called the centroplex now
5:36 you should be a hockey team did you guys
5:37 ever see the hockey team that played
5:38 here yeah uh menkin whoopi and it was
5:42 making whoopee was the name of the
5:44 hockey team
5:46 you can go a lot of places with that and
5:48 it used to be making music as well
5:51 making music and making whoopee and
5:53 there's a baseball team here called
5:54 making bacon
5:56 you ever been to a baseball game here a
5:58 few yeah
5:59 nice we're not great but let's get some
6:02 fun experience i'm certainly not the
6:04 marketing
6:05 director for the former team here but i
6:07 would imagine they had a shirt that said
6:09 i love making whoopi
6:11 they had to have had that i can't
6:13 imagine i wish i had that shirt
6:16 maybe you can find it
6:18 find it out there somewhere a thrift
6:20 store maybe one of your thrift store
6:21 hauls
6:22 you can find i love making whoopee
6:24 t-shirt
6:26 also a lot of wrestling took place here
6:28 hulk hogan was here sting was here wwf
6:31 now called the wwe
6:33 you guys went to a couple matches here
6:36 almost you almost just got cancelled
6:39 okay
6:41 so we were big wcw fans
6:45 so you like wcw over wwe sting
6:48 yeah wolf pack nwo nice
6:52 slogan yeah
7:02 pretty cool looking building can't get
7:02 in
7:07 also fun fact
7:07 they had an event here a wrestling event
7:08 called the main event five back in 91
7:11 where they announced hulk hogan
7:14 announced that he's gonna go against
7:16 slaughter
7:17 and wrestlemania seven
7:20 but wrestlemania seven didn't take place
7:22 here they just announced it here kind of
7:23 reminds me of that
7:25 that one episode of mary with children
7:27 the man who once met andy griffith
7:30 he didn't he wasn't andy griffith but he
7:32 met andy griffin so it's kind of a
7:35 six degrees of separation of
7:38 kevin
7:39 bacon making making bacon there you go
7:42 that's your time that was a long stretch
7:44 for a badger peeking in the window and
7:46 even though it says it's now called the
7:48 centralplex down the bottom they have a
7:50 banner up there it says 50th anniversary
7:53 of the macon coliseum
7:58 elvis was here but elvis has left the
7:58 building
8:01 and looking at a couple photos from june
8:03 of 77
8:05 this would have been just two months
8:06 that he performed in the macon coliseum
8:10 before his passing
8:12 right there there's
8:14 there's the king of rock and roll
8:15 getting off that little ledge
8:17 going down that was the outfit he wore
8:19 that day
8:21 elvis and macon
8:23 he might have been making whoopee too
8:25 later that evening
8:26 made it downtown now to the otis reading
8:29 king of seoul
8:31 museum celebrating 80
8:34 legendary years gonna stop inside here
8:44 you can see how nice and crisp and cool
8:44 it is about 40 degrees outside
8:47 you can see the
8:48 little kind of condensation there
8:51 on the window
8:53 all right going in
8:56 check this little place out here at 339
8:58 is the address
9:03 cotton avenue
9:04 corner of second and cotton
9:06 i did show a few things on the entrance
9:08 of the lobby on the way in but was told
9:10 they do not allow photographs and
9:12 no filming
9:14 but the gentleman's eye was nice enough
9:16 to give me a little map of some of the
9:19 the other local areas kind of around the
9:29 within walking distance of where i'm at
9:29 that relates to to otis
9:31 so we're going to walk from here at 339
9:36 and i ended up getting a couple stickers
9:40 the otis redding foundation
9:42 see if i can
9:44 show what's in here
9:46 yeah i got two of those
9:48 and the museum's free
9:51 so just bought a couple things
9:54 pretty cool though we're checking out
9:56 now looking at the macon auditorium
9:58 and the gentleman at the museum was
10:00 saying
10:01 that not only did otis perform here
10:03 earlier in his life but this is also
10:06 where after his passing everyone
10:08 gathered
10:09 to pay their respects including
10:11 james brown was in there now it is
10:13 rumored that
10:14 you know some say i think maybe even
10:15 james brown mentioned in jess that
10:18 he was either born or from macon but he
10:20 wasn't
10:22 i was talking to the
10:24 talking to the guy at the museum about
10:25 that
10:26 but james brown was in there
10:28 paying his respects to otis
10:30 this is a very impressive looking
10:32 structure this building
10:35 not to be confused with the the other
10:37 what was the name of the other place we
10:38 were just at
10:39 the centralplex
10:41 not to be confused with the centralplex
10:49 and on the top of this you can't really
10:49 see it from ground levels like a big
10:51 sphere like a big
10:56 on top of this you can't really see it
10:56 from ground level though
10:57 with some church bells off in the
10:58 distance here on these cross streets
11:00 next to the walton building
11:03 just down the way
11:05 a block that way is the old capricorn
11:07 studio offices not the studio but the
11:10 offices
11:12 where otis and others
11:14 kind of had their
11:16 their office
11:18 there's a mural in the corner of this h
11:20 h restaurant which is closed today as a
11:21 recording of this it's monday
11:23 and there's a lot of stuff around town
11:24 that is closed we'll go check out that
11:26 mural and it looks as if they're
11:28 completing the mural on the far side
11:31 there
11:33 and goes without saying
11:35 for those in this area the allman
11:36 brothers very popular
11:38 as well gonna go to a couple of their
11:40 spots
11:43 see them over here
11:45 on the side
11:46 i heard they have really good soul food
11:50 however not today
11:59 i'm seeing a formulation of a guitar
12:08 all right go check out the offices
12:08 building still exists now the studios
12:10 have been refurbished recently
12:12 they were
12:14 abandoned for a long time but
12:17 historical society fixed up the studios
12:20 which are
12:21 at the drive over to those areas right
12:23 here next to these law offices
12:25 is this building
12:27 where was just used for the offices
12:31 many notable names
12:34 a lot of music history took place
12:36 right here inside
12:38 of these very walls and right on the
12:40 side wow look at this
12:43 still shows where it says
12:45 capricorn records right here on the side
12:47 of the wall you can still kind of see
12:49 the faint
12:50 wording
12:51 along the side
12:53 capricorn records any idea what the the
12:55 lettering below it says
12:57 phil
13:06 train horn going by i wasn't allowed to
13:06 film inside the museum but they have
13:08 some photographs of otis and others
13:10 inside
13:11 this very building
13:17 i like the triangle about kind of adds
13:17 to the ambiance i'll show a photograph i
13:20 found online of what this building
13:22 looked like back when it had the
13:24 lettering still on the side before they
13:25 pulled it down as shown here
13:28 capricorn records offices
13:35 you're going to go by and go drive over
13:35 to the where the studio was or used to
13:37 be
13:39 the birthplace of southern rock some say
13:42 for the allman brothers and from here
13:44 you can kind of see the top of the dome
13:45 there on the auditorium you can see it
13:47 better from up on the hill willing to
13:50 forget
13:52 where we were
13:54 and what we are about as a nation
13:57 calls this event
13:59 and the celebration of martin luther
14:01 king's birthday
14:03 to be something that will remind us
14:06 of the high
14:07 goals and morals that our nation stands
14:10 for
14:11 help us
14:12 to be reminded of what our constitution
14:16 has within it
14:18 that it is a document
14:20 that gives us the freedom
14:22 that he fought for
14:24 for all mankind
14:25 they are celebrating the birth of martin
14:27 luther king
14:29 who is until the 15th but the lady
14:31 that's talking is
14:33 saying that it needs to be a
14:34 a lead up celebration of sorts i did
14:37 look up and he was born on the 15th
14:39 and as a recording of this it is the
14:41 third but they are
14:43 they're starting it now and
14:44 trying to
14:46 try to keep people keep it mindful in
14:47 people's minds and they're
14:49 they're filming it and they're streaming
14:50 this live they were saying definitely uh
14:53 cleaned up quite a bit from the photos
14:55 that i was looking at online when this
14:58 was abandoned
15:02 capricorn
15:02 records
15:04 right here the studio
15:11 inside here as well
15:11 pretty much the birthplace of the almond
15:13 brothers and named after you know given
15:15 the astrological sign of capricorn for
15:18 those that started the shared
15:20 shared astrological sign
15:23 and the buildings out at the end are
15:24 very recent
15:26 could have been added on but the
15:27 original structure
15:29 is right here
15:32 this is all original
15:38 and as stated a lot of
15:38 music aficionados
15:40 call this the the birth place of
15:42 southern rock
15:45 marshall tucker band also
15:48 recorded in here
15:52 no longer
15:52 capricorn studios but
15:56 they do have like a little
15:58 like a museum set up
16:00 what is that what does that say the
16:02 company that managed
16:04 leonard skinner
16:06 home to alan weldon's company
16:09 that managed leonard skynyrd historic
16:12 macon music registry
16:27 now owned by the mercer company
16:27 mercer university
16:29 music at capricorn
16:56 i don't believe this is open now too the
16:56 museum's not open today either
16:58 we're not we didn't pick the best day on
17:00 a monday
17:04 that's just how that's the way the
17:06 cookie crumbles
17:10 we're covering a lot of ground though so
17:12 kind of works out still got a few more
17:14 fewer spots to show
17:17 it just gives me a reason to come back
17:18 to make it at some point just to show
17:20 what it looked like before the
17:22 renovations
17:23 i believe about five or six years ago
17:25 they did this
17:26 give or take
17:27 this is from the
17:29 far end down there
17:32 yeah they really cleaned this place up
17:43 a nice little little mural over there as
17:43 well
17:45 just next door the building next door
17:52 and behind them is the capricorn
17:52 astrology sign
17:55 yeah nicely done
17:56 made it over to the pleasant hill area
17:58 of macon
18:04 this is
18:04 the home
18:05 where little richard grew up
18:08 and lived until
18:09 he became successful with his first hit
18:11 tutti frutti
18:14 and the way it's looking
18:16 next door were probably other houses
18:18 that have been torn down but this was
18:19 saved
18:30 and keeping up with the theming of this
18:30 monday
18:31 are they open
18:32 no
18:33 they are not
18:35 they're not open right
18:50 but they are usually open
18:50 hours of operation
18:53 i walk up on little richard's porch
19:00 tuesday through saturday
19:00 so if it was tomorrow tomorrow yeah
19:03 yeah but it's not tomorrow
19:09 noticing a lot of stuff around town on
19:09 the weekdays
19:10 this is more of a weekend town yes very
19:13 much
19:14 they say everyone's working for the
19:15 weekend
19:17 that's making
19:31 oh they have built something around the
19:31 back there part of the museum around the
19:33 back so they've extended
19:37 the little richard house resource
19:39 resource center
20:02 there's a piano there and
20:02 a painting and a photograph of little
20:04 richard
20:06 in the back and directly across from
20:08 this rather large park
20:26 with a lot of homes that are saved
20:26 they're kind of similar to elvis home in
20:28 tupelo
20:29 where he was born
20:35 and all those houses near
20:36 elvis says a little elvis tie him
20:37 because he performed here in macon
20:40 other ones in the neighborhood are torn
20:41 down but just like little richards
20:45 still stands here
20:46 we're all to see
20:48 so has some of the christmas decor
20:50 lights up as well
20:57 are you guys taking me to the psycho
20:57 house
20:58 what the i can just keep going i don't
21:00 want to see norman or mrs no or misses
21:03 but keep going to keep on driving and
21:05 naturally that was not used in the film
21:07 it just kind of resembled it across from
21:09 anne's the court is
21:12 burned parked
21:15 in b-e-r-n-d
21:16 park
21:20 i hadn't planned on stopping at this but
21:20 we're driving by
21:23 and notice it look very unique some
21:24 unique sculptures here
21:26 in this park this is very close to the
21:29 big house
21:30 which is the nickname where the allman
21:32 brothers lived
21:34 which does not open until thursday so
21:38 keeping up with the theme
21:40 i'm gonna have to come back i think that
21:41 would be its own full video for sure
21:44 this is almost like a looking through
21:47 a window to the world
21:50 this car wash was used in a movie what
21:52 was the name of the movie
21:54 need for speed
21:56 this car wash little filming location
22:04 never saw that one
22:06 and now approaching
22:08 the big house
22:10 it was nicknames
22:11 nicknamed
22:13 i should say and it has
22:15 the wording up top
22:17 and the road goes on
22:20 forever gates are closed
22:25 they're walking up this little staircase
22:28 leading up to the fence line
22:30 you can see the home where they live
22:32 from 1970 to 1973 at least a side view
22:35 of it
22:36 and years later they're you know
22:38 at that time those that remain were
22:41 evicted in 73 but years later the owner
22:43 at that time
22:44 we could turn this into a bed and
22:46 breakfast that never happened because
22:48 the renovations would have been very
22:49 extensive
22:50 then in 2009
22:52 preservation
22:55 of the allman brothers history took
22:57 place
22:58 and it reopened it says over there
23:00 underneath that little awning almond
23:02 brothers band museum the big house
23:28 from what i was reading the largest
23:28 collection of
23:30 memorabilia
23:33 from the group itself i almost stumbled
23:35 down
23:48 okay yeah here's the main
23:48 i was thinking maybe it was around the
23:50 the back side but this is the main area
23:52 where you see all the photographs
23:55 so you can see it from street view even
23:56 though
23:57 technically it's closed today
24:00 and looking up the operating hours
24:02 won't be open until thursday
24:09 i'd definitely like to go back by here
24:09 this could be its own episode for sure
24:14 hey you can just walk right up there
24:21 how many years have you guys lived in
24:21 this area
24:22 i am georgia all my life but making
24:25 maybe 18 years 18 years have you ever
24:29 been in the big house no never
24:38 well if i ever come back through if it's
24:38 on a day this is open we'll have to
24:40 we'll have to go in i won't be here
24:42 until thursday
24:44 but for future future endeavors
24:46 future trips
24:48 we'll make a trip to the big house
25:00 also on the historic macon
25:00 music registry the big house home to the
25:03 allman brothers band families roadies
25:05 and friends
25:06 from 70 to 73.
25:24 and the band was here until 73 and then
25:24 in 93
25:26 kirk and kirsten west made the big house
25:29 their home
25:30 with the dream of preserving it
25:32 and then in 2009
25:35 the museum opened
25:37 and all their quote
25:39 dreams came true
25:41 why do you think that's in quotations
26:00 no i don't know i'm asking you
26:00 that's a test is it
26:02 i want to say it's a song
26:05 you're gonna say it's a song lyric yeah
26:15 okay it was looked up you were right
26:15 it is a song called dreams that one
26:17 slipped past my radar
26:22 a lot of the songs were written inside
26:22 or at least composed
26:25 inside this very home
26:27 say in the living room
26:29 rambling man or no blue sky was written
26:34 in the living room in the kitchen
26:36 rambling man
26:38 so we have the kitchen to thank for
26:41 it's pretty dang cool
26:43 you can kind of peek in can you see
26:44 anything through there
26:46 oh the stairway there's a few records to
26:49 the left there
26:56 oh is that instruments to the right here
26:56 yeah i just want to know where the
26:57 kitchen is i wonder where rambling man
26:58 was written
27:05 okay that's a that's a comeback one day
27:05 one day
27:10 oh there we go look at that
27:10 little mushroom there
27:24 it's kind of nice to be able to see the
27:24 front of the facade here
27:26 the front of the
27:27 very impressive home
27:34 first pulled up i realized the gate was
27:34 locked up here
27:36 or at least not locked but the
27:38 fencing was close to the driveway i
27:40 think i was going to be able to get a
27:41 peek at the front
27:48 a little parking lot around the back for
27:48 those who are
27:49 visiting on the days that
27:51 it is open not today however
28:02 it's also interesting to note that the
28:04 restaurant i showed the mural a little
28:06 bit earlier in downtown the h spot
28:09 they would eat there they would go from
28:12 the big house home and they would eat
28:13 there because they would either get free
28:14 food or discounted food
28:17 from those who were there at the
28:18 restaurant because they couldn't afford
28:20 a meal
28:21 not realizing that they would be very
28:23 successful
28:24 in their career
28:26 and that kind of stuff fascinates me
28:27 with the cityscape down the hill aways
28:36 rose hill is where i'm standing now
28:36 and through this very beautiful archway
28:44 it's a final resting place you said
28:44 maybe we should just park and walk not
28:46 really
28:51 definitely better to just
28:51 park the car and walk through here
28:53 instead of
28:54 would not have been wise
29:09 just follow the path
29:09 we're not the first to have
29:11 walk this
29:13 little area
30:21 is dwayne
30:21 and raymond oakley
30:45 they really wanted this shielded pretty
30:45 well to have this rather large fence
30:48 erected here
31:11 and then raymond
31:11 72.
32:01 all right i'm now being driven back to
32:01 my accommodations
32:03 on the outskirts of macon
32:09 and josh and caleb gave me a couple of
32:09 their stickers for their channels
32:11 as shown here
32:14 i will be back to hopefully
32:16 some of the places that we visited with
32:18 their open
32:20 but check out josh the movie collector
32:22 and a day with caleb
