0:03 welcome everyone adam the woo here as a
0:03 recording of this thursday january 13th
0:06 2021.
0:08 i am in an area just on the outskirts of
0:10 yemissi
0:12 south carolina starting off the day here
0:15 at the ruins
0:17 of an old structure a very fantastic
0:19 structure
0:20 known as the sheldon church
0:23 now i will be starting here and
0:25 venturing my way 120 100 300 450 or my
0:29 more miles if i was to go you know
0:31 straight it'd be probably 130 miles to
0:33 columbia south carolina where i have
0:35 procured a hotel for a few evenings and
0:38 i will use that as a central point to
0:40 kind of explore in the middle of the
0:41 state and go around for you know a few
0:43 hundred miles out about every day
0:45 looping around to all the different
0:47 directions and kind of exploring south
0:49 carolina but i'm starting
0:51 right here at this very historic
0:55 and fantastic structure as the sun is
0:58 like right there
0:59 in my eyes feels nice at about 55
1:02 degrees i'm inviting you to join me
1:05 on this excursion today
1:08 as i traverse i like that i'm using that
1:09 word a lot
1:11 around south carolina
1:13 shall you
1:21 preserved here
1:22 with a fence around the front of it
1:25 just to make sure no one
1:27 you know goes over there and damages or
1:29 desecrates or
1:32 steals or paints anything
1:40 there's an information placard on the
1:40 road and there's a little bit of traffic
1:41 that goes by it's kind of out here
1:44 kind of out here in the let's say the
1:45 middle of nowhere but it's out here but
1:47 a lot of people do stop by
1:50 it is a well-known historical place
1:52 at the moment is probably
1:54 you know three or four other people
1:55 walking around besides myself
2:09 it was burned back in the 1700s
2:09 give a little more information when i
2:10 show that plaque
2:12 by the road there's also some other
2:13 stuff written up here on the side
2:15 of the wall i'll zoom in
2:18 see what that says
2:31 it says friends who have come into the
2:31 church yard please treat these sacred
2:33 ruins
2:35 and those that surround them
2:37 respectfully with reverence they deserve
2:41 let us leave feeling old sheldon is not
2:43 worse but better for our presence
2:46 yeah i really like that the sun is
2:48 shining very prominently kind of warms
2:50 things up a little bit which is nice
2:52 been very chilly last few days still
2:54 it's still a little chilly but
2:56 the sun helps
2:58 considerably and the wind's not too
2:59 gusty so that also helps now some of
3:02 these are dated back to 1850
3:07 this is anne bull hayward
3:09 the wife of daniel hayward
3:12 middle name of bull b-u-l-l
3:18 i don't know if i've ever met anyone
3:18 with the middle name of bull could have
3:20 been a nickname
3:21 but on october 4th 1851
3:24 was late here
3:26 at the age of 38.
3:35 and there are a few others kind of
3:35 scattered around the property including
3:37 right here
3:39 in front of the fence line
3:55 and even more around the back here
3:55 take a look at these
4:07 1805 wow
4:07 this was dated 1805.
4:14 there's some over across the fence but
4:14 then there's others here
4:16 for example this one
4:18 1832
4:39 one thing for sure about this area
4:39 definitely has its own vibe as far as
4:42 trees go
4:44 and with the moss
4:46 kind of dangling from the limbs
4:50 definitely that south carolina feel
5:04 not only a very tall building but rather
5:04 large windows too here on the side
5:08 and possibly a door frame because you
5:10 got the steps here in the middle this
5:12 would be around the side
5:15 but you could just see how tall those
5:16 were so if there were
5:18 any sort of windows in there
5:21 that is very impressive with the front
5:24 beating around this end
5:27 but yeah just look at these limbs here
5:30 so cool
5:32 a little picnic area over here as well
5:34 and this would be the front
5:37 of the former building now ruins
5:43 this is a good starting point
5:43 we're hitting some of the back roads
5:49 it's a cool place and this is very
5:49 unique there are some
5:50 little concrete bricks in here
5:52 stabilizing this tree
5:55 that's different
5:56 and there's a pump over here
5:58 appears as if it works because there's a
6:00 little bit of water here on the ground
6:02 with this pump
6:05 for you take this
6:15 i always gotta check the water
6:16 the information placard is right over
6:17 here against the road
6:23 dates back
6:23 1751-57
6:25 is when it was utilized and then it was
6:27 burned
6:37 oh there we go bulls plantation
6:37 okay
6:38 that was her middle name
6:40 okay this is interesting it was
6:42 partially burned
6:43 in 57 and rebuilt in 1825 however
6:49 reading around the other side here
6:52 in 1865
6:55 it was dismantled which leaves what is
6:58 seen here today
7:11 just to give some bearings here the tip
7:11 of the pen on the map is about where i'm
7:13 at
7:14 and where i'm going to be going also got
7:16 myself a coffee over here piping hot
7:18 caffeinated beverage as i like to say as
7:21 i refer to it i always like to show a
7:24 kind of a general layout of the land of
7:26 where i'm at so left this morning was
7:29 down in hilton head checked out of my
7:30 hotel
7:31 went up here drove about an hour
7:33 starting point right here and i'm going
7:35 to be venturing up
7:37 kind of in this area no real rhyme or
7:39 reason
7:40 and kind of want to stop in a couple
7:42 places
7:43 right here and then
7:45 just somewhere in this vicinity will be
7:48 today i don't really have a game plan
7:51 but starting here
7:53 and making my way
7:55 to columbia where i will be spending a
7:57 few days and then after i'm there i'll
8:00 just use this as a central point
8:02 and be going all around this area for
8:05 the next few days following today gotta
8:07 love the canopy of trees
8:10 making this little like a tree tunnel
8:13 of source going through here
8:24 like engulfing the road
8:24 all around these parts i'm noticing
8:26 these horses over here
8:29 look at this one on the far end very
8:30 beautiful spotted horse
8:39 hello horsies
8:39 just doing a little grazing
8:54 very beautiful
8:54 and just off low country highway i
8:57 believe that's the area around here in
8:59 south carolina going up from the
9:01 shoreline
9:02 over into the middle section
9:04 known as low country this is low country
9:06 high hi-lo
9:08 in the corner of shiloh loop
9:11 and there's some antique farm equipment
9:13 here in front of this former gas station
9:16 this is where the gas pumps used to be
9:18 it's also a residence
9:20 i believe someone lives around kind of
9:22 the back side
9:23 so it's a former gas station turned into
9:25 a residence you can see the rocking
9:27 chairs up there
9:28 on the porch
9:30 pretty nice
9:31 oh a bird just flew by
9:33 when you're out here in these kind of
9:35 middle of nowhere areas
9:37 might not want to go down a road titled
9:40 this
9:57 just say it pulling into and through
9:57 ruffin now roughing south carolina
10:05 looks like there's a railroad station up
10:05 here
10:10 old railroad station in ruffin south
10:10 carolina
10:11 and some chickens
10:13 hello chickens
10:23 this whole general story looking place
10:23 oh check this out
10:25 the old ruffin post office
10:28 which is now a cafe
10:30 there is an open sign on the window but
10:32 doesn't appear to be anyone here yeah
10:36 it's now a little diner
10:43 this is highway 112
10:43 just outside of the community i was just
10:45 in
10:51 and a place that would make leatherface
10:51 feel right at home
11:04 i'm not gonna go over there but wow this
11:06 is
11:11 this is a relic
11:11 this old farm house
11:13 the barn back in the backyard
11:16 look what your brother did to the door
11:22 obviously
11:22 not the state of texas this is south
11:24 carolina but give me those vibes
11:28 and the road that runs parallel to this
11:30 not too busy
11:32 one vehicle went by a moment ago
11:35 but i've been standing here for a few
11:37 minutes
11:38 admiring this
11:41 and no traffic
11:51 notice how the vines kind of stretch up
11:51 the side
12:22 i was incorrect in the highway number
12:22 it's highway 212. i think i misspoke on
12:25 that that that house was on highway 212
12:29 just outside ruffin
12:32 all right continuing on
12:34 next up is the town of
12:36 williams south carolina
12:39 and here's an old country store
12:42 called b
12:43 and j woodworking old country store
12:47 here at 1732
12:50 post office
12:52 right up here
12:54 on this little street corner
12:56 very tiny town
13:00 but you'll notice most communities
13:01 almost all of them
13:03 will have a fire department and a post
13:05 office
13:13 zip code
13:13 29493 according to that sign
13:17 poking out of the trees there is the
13:18 water tower
13:24 and some street signs just give the
13:24 coordinates
13:26 and railroad runs through here as well
13:29 and a grown over with a lot of vines
13:33 the old depot here too
13:36 also in williams
13:57 not in use anymore obviously
13:57 and some active farm equipment back
13:59 there probably a resident
14:02 back down that road
14:04 but right here along the thoroughfare
14:07 got stuff like this
14:09 all decayed and falling apart
14:12 the remnants of the past
14:14 this farmland here whatever crop there
14:16 was
14:17 seems to be dried up
14:19 definitely does not look
14:21 like a healthy
14:23 healthy crop there and way off in the
14:25 distance are hundreds
14:28 hundreds of round bales
14:30 you know for cows and horses way off in
14:32 the distance
14:34 passing through sycamore now
14:37 and next to this
14:38 garden
14:43 just happens to be a lot of aluminum
14:43 cans someone has collected
14:45 a heck of a lot
14:47 of aluminum cans
14:49 that they're probably going to recycle
14:51 a lot of these small areas will you know
14:54 pay you a certain amount
14:55 per pound
14:57 to recycle they got quite a few dollars
14:58 in aluminum cans there over to fairfax
15:01 now looking at the water tower
15:03 only 2 000 or so residents
15:07 here in fairfax
15:12 at the store right on the corner of
15:12 hampton avenue
15:14 and 6th street
15:20 but look at this relic
15:20 across the way
15:22 from that store
15:24 this pay phone
15:26 still exists however
15:29 looks like it's been gnawed out nod at
15:31 by
15:32 something
15:35 some human or animal should test the
15:37 dial tone huh i've got a wager there's
15:39 probably not a dial tone
15:42 hello
15:44 no dial tone
15:46 so it is not working however
15:48 pretty dang awesome that this is still
15:50 still here
15:53 only the second time probably in the
15:54 last month or so even in these small
15:56 towns that i've seen a pay phone
15:59 that has the
16:01 shell around it sometimes you'll just
16:02 see the shell
16:03 but not the actual pay phone unit
16:07 so that's pretty neat even though no
16:08 dial town
16:10 still pretty fantastic next to
16:12 rufus's
16:14 car care
16:15 rufus ferguson
16:19 has a car care center i like the
16:21 architecture of this
16:23 the style
16:25 and look at the
16:27 antenna up top there
16:29 there's a tv antenna
16:32 i like that as well got a pay phone and
16:35 the old timey antenna on the roof
16:39 i like that
16:42 tire disposal ten dollars each so all
16:44 these tires
16:45 customers that came through and dropped
16:47 their tires off they got ten dollars
16:48 each
16:58 see what else i can find oh look at this
16:58 still has the phone emblem
17:00 up here as well letting anyone that's
17:02 driving down the road or walking by
17:04 to know that there is a phone
17:07 look at that
17:14 also in town at wally's collectibles
17:14 got a little
17:16 enjoy coca-cola sign up there
17:19 some other items here in the front yard
17:21 of the store
17:24 does it appear to be open today at the
17:27 moment
17:29 it says here that they pay they pay cash
17:32 for old signs
17:35 here at wally's collectibles
17:37 in fact up on the top there is a a
17:40 vintage rusted out 7up
17:43 rc cola
17:51 and ooh what's who's this
17:51 over there on the porch
17:53 wearing a jacket
17:55 got a fox of some sort there's a pepsi
17:59 sign there another one up top pepsi
18:02 yeah a lot of good stuff through here
18:03 look at this
18:05 say pepsi please and even a coca-cola
18:08 cooler down here a couple of them that
18:10 you'd see in the
18:11 old-timey stores
18:13 and then up top golf
18:15 american and esso and buy sell and trade
18:19 through here and also
18:21 you know pay cash for these old signs so
18:23 if you're in the air and you have an old
18:24 sign you want to sell
18:27 just got to figure out when they're open
18:28 they're not open today
18:31 this is good stuff
18:32 you know obviously i love
18:34 i love the old vintage americana metal
18:37 signs
18:38 this place has got a lot of them and gas
18:40 pumps
18:42 it's almost like i could own this place
18:44 you know this kind of place i i would
18:46 have
18:47 if i had a store and i lived in a small
18:48 town
18:50 i like it
19:06 all right moving on this motel fairfax
19:06 motel on the outskirts of town
19:09 still has satellite dishes hey remember
19:12 those days
19:13 stay in a motel to have satellite dishes
19:16 traveling along highway 321 now
19:20 northbound on 321.
19:24 go through a couple
19:25 couple tiny communities on 321.
19:43 for example
19:43 ulmer ulmer
19:50 1891 established
19:50 and i looked it up only a population of
19:53 under 40 residents
19:56 look at this beauty
20:03 wow
20:03 you don't see many of the old school
20:04 ones that look like this
20:10 check that out
20:10 ulmer
20:11 fire department
20:12 printed on the side there with the
20:14 stickers
20:16 from back in the day
20:25 this old ford
20:25 fire engine fire truck
20:36 even has the words tanker
20:36 on the side tanker number one
20:38 i'm gonna i'm gonna wager and say
20:40 there's probably not more than one
20:42 tanker well they probably have a newer
20:44 one but back in those days probably only
20:47 they probably only had the one tanker
20:50 town hall right over here
20:52 adjacent to the volunteer fire
20:54 department
21:02 see the ulmer
21:02 sign there and also the town hall
21:06 side down there behind that air
21:07 conditioner unit this is around the
21:08 backside not the backside of water but
21:10 the backside of the ulmer
21:12 town hall
21:22 i always like pointing out water towers
21:22 too
21:23 it does have a post office there on the
21:25 far end
21:26 this place here that says sisters
21:29 printed on the side inside the windows
21:32 there's some gym equipment in there
21:34 i don't believe it's a diner anymore
21:36 someone has their workout equipment
21:38 stored in there
21:50 this gas station here has some very
21:50 unique windows
21:57 those are pretty cool looking windows
21:57 there
21:59 the way you can always tell if it's a
22:01 former gas station
22:03 or where the pumps used to be right
22:12 and this is all blocked off can't pull
22:12 up in that parking lot
22:14 but the sign states interstate
22:17 was the name of this possibly a truck
22:19 stop
22:20 perhaps
22:21 you can see right up here
22:23 it says interstate
22:49 given a little wave from my shadow well
22:49 i'm waving but my shadow's also waving
22:56 this is a
22:56 amazing side
22:59 as these trucks go down the road
23:05 this arrow right here
23:08 pointing to a restaurant of some sort
23:11 this rusted out metal arrow
23:14 on a heavy-duty
23:16 metal sign in a holder
23:19 stanchion if you will
23:25 yeah that is
23:25 that is good
23:30 all right if i was if i was a betting
23:30 man on the other side
23:32 might be able to tell what this says
23:35 and that is why
23:37 i am not a betting man because you
23:39 cannot tell what it says i think it may
23:40 i thought maybe the sign would be
23:42 readable
23:43 on this side which is not
23:46 so it's just a guessing game
23:52 could have been something there
23:52 stating as well
24:01 yeah this is good
24:01 building you know interesting
24:02 architecture of the building
24:04 but really that arrow
24:06 on the sign there
24:09 that's what drew me and the air the
24:10 arrow worked the arrow did his job
24:20 yeah a couple trucks were going by but
24:20 now nothing
24:21 just solitude out here
24:24 and old tires
24:26 i do like the way the the side of the
24:28 building here
24:33 you is like i said the architecture of
24:33 it the style
24:34 stylization of the slanted windows
24:38 and of course the
24:40 the bars here on the side as well
24:47 and it adds to the ambiance having the
24:47 all the vines up there dangling as well
25:04 arrived at the water tower in olar
25:04 and the store over here on the corner is
25:06 open it's a gentleman with his dog
25:09 he just got some lottery tickets
25:11 scratched them off
25:19 this is the main thoroughfare the busy
25:19 intersection in olar
25:22 and across the way is something very
25:24 very interesting i'll show a little
25:25 closer up walk over there if you are in
25:28 need of assistance
25:39 i believe the post office is over there
25:39 the olar post office
25:49 not a substation you'll see
25:49 substations that are this size no this
25:51 is the real department
25:58 well it could have maybe former
26:00 department because
26:02 the only one on duty
26:04 is right here behind this desk and it's
26:06 just a mannequin
26:07 and appears to be one of the old
26:10 vehicles i just kicked
26:12 i just kicked a rock
26:21 yeah here on display inside this
26:21 building
26:23 right over here
26:25 take a look
26:43 kind of tough to see with the glare
26:43 old ford i just saw something that got
26:46 me really excited
26:48 oh yes
26:50 take a look at this
26:52 on the side of the brick
26:55 not graffitied over not tagged up
27:00 decent condition and still readable yet
27:03 faded my favorites when i am looking for
27:07 these items
27:08 across any sort of small communities
27:13 this is glorious
27:18 yes
27:18 can you see it can you see the coca-cola
27:23 emblem in the side etched in the side i
27:26 can
27:27 i can see it
27:29 that is very very faded very
27:33 timey
27:35 maybe one of the best i've ever seen as
27:36 far as faded out but still visible
27:44 wow yeah yes
27:44 and not just on the side okay i'm
27:48 getting really excited this is i need it
27:50 needs to be like a scale system
27:52 on something that hasn't been retouched
27:55 up but still exists
27:57 but it has not been desecrated in this
27:59 in the form of
28:01 vandalism
28:02 this would be upper echelon right here i
28:04 don't have a grading system
28:06 someone might
28:08 yes that is what i'm talking about
28:10 and then up here you can faintly make
28:13 out the words
28:14 as well coca-cola right there
28:21 that's a good sign look at that even the
28:21 lamp up there
28:23 oh yeah even still has the lamp light oh
28:26 man
28:31 okay this town is good
28:31 this is known as the
28:32 this is creech's
28:34 variety store
28:37 creatures variety store
28:39 c-r-e-e-c-h-s
28:43 or c
28:43 c r e e c h
28:46 and then the plural creatures are not
28:48 the plural but the
28:49 whatever that word would be symbolizing
28:52 the creech owned it
28:54 oh man
28:58 yeah like i said like i always say it's
28:58 the little things that get me excited
29:00 you can tell these are the original
29:01 wooden doors right down here too
29:04 original wooden doors
29:13 that's inside creatures
29:13 yeah look at that
29:19 wow you got to be careful of the glass
29:19 evidently this building is for sale
29:21 right over here on the side of the
29:23 window
29:24 there is not a price tag but it does say
29:27 the price has been reduced
29:29 so whatever the price was
29:31 it's lower than originally
29:34 what the original thought would be
29:44 another fuel station right here mechanic
29:44 shop
29:50 got the mechanisms out front to lift the
29:50 car up
29:58 chris's car chris's car care chris's
29:58 auto care
30:02 and post office
30:16 and no way of knowing but that's what it
30:16 reminds me of
30:17 and the post office right here
30:20 little tiny post office
30:24 29843
30:32 and just on the outskirts of
30:32 olar the town o-l-a-r
30:40 are some classic car alerts well classic
30:40 cars alert
30:41 including this one
30:43 which has a for sale sign in the window
30:56 can't make out a phone number but there
30:56 is a for sale sign
31:03 not really drivable but pretty cool
31:03 looking
31:20 oh yeah
31:20 i'm gonna say hello to these cows right
31:27 how's it going cows
31:27 doing good cows
31:34 just sitting around watching the logging
31:34 trucks go by

31:38 huh
31:45 that was a logging truck
31:45 cows
31:46 all right enjoy the day i'm gonna keep
31:48 continuing on
31:49 yep heading to columbia

32:04 looks to be the old theater down through
32:07 here and if you look over there at that
32:09 intersection
32:11 on the side of that wall another
32:13 ice cold in bottles five cent
32:16 mural
32:22 the old reliable
32:22 obviously it's been retouched but
32:24 still pretty dang cool
32:30 all right
32:30 i had to turn around
32:33 show these it looks like these are some
32:34 of bernard coffindafer's crosses
32:38 from the mid-80s yep
32:40 he was a preacher named bernard
32:42 coffindapper they can be found in random
32:44 places across the country but mostly in
32:46 the south
32:48 there are still quite a few are still
32:50 left to this day
32:52 made of wood
32:54 and always the always the three crosses
32:57 but he's the one responsible for for
32:59 putting them all over and you'll see
33:01 them in other areas obviously
33:03 but the ones that are made of wood
33:05 with the gold one in the middle
33:07 those are usually
33:09 bernard
33:10 cough and daphne's crosses
33:23 from the mid 80s till now they still
33:23 exist
33:34 that's a throwback from the past
33:34 this is downtown blackville
33:38 mural here on the side
33:43 the train tracks
33:43 yeah here we go
33:45 it's like a cart that
33:47 operates on the train tracks
33:49 as these trucks go by you see the
33:51 vehicle is painted here
33:52 but then
33:53 the trax has that card on it it's a
33:56 gentleman on the front
33:58 and across the way the grocery store is
34:00 called ken's galaxy
34:03 the galaxy grocery store
34:13 right over there ken's galaxy
34:13 is the name of the store
34:30 and it was erected in honor of solomon
34:32 blatt senior
34:34 born in 1895
34:37 a courageous gentleman and statesman
34:42 who loves blackville and all its
34:42 citizens
34:48 this marker is on the site where mr
34:48 blatt's father ran a mercantile business
34:51 for nearly 50 years
34:54 right here in the little downtown area
34:56 cautions murals right here off the side
34:58 of highway
35:00 three is a general store
35:04 and in front of that general store
35:07 is this signage
35:10 god's acres healing springs
35:12 by tradition the springs the healing
35:14 springs got its name
35:16 back in 1781
35:20 and the springs are still there
35:30 ownership of the springs pass from the
35:30 tribes who revered them
35:33 as an indian trader
35:35 nathaniel walker
35:37 who bought them with corn the site
35:39 passed through several hands and was
35:41 acquired by lp
35:43 boylston
35:44 back in july of 1944
35:47 the waters by analysis are exceptionally
35:49 pure
35:50 and contain healthy minerals people
35:52 today as in the past believe they truly
35:55 are
35:56 healing springs i'm gonna go get myself
35:59 some water from the healing springs
36:01 wow there is quite a congregation of
36:03 vehicles and people down here at the
36:05 springs
36:06 like a half a dozen cars and trucks
36:08 everyone
36:09 loading up on that healthy water
36:11 the healing water of the springs
37:08 it just comes right out of the ground
37:08 like that
37:11 like that huh

37:18 anything like that
37:50 yeah i don't have it i don't have a
37:50 gallon but i have this
38:12 and the rest of it just kind of bubbles

38:38 south carolina i will still be in the
38:39 state for a considerable amount of time
38:42 be staying up in the columbia area
38:44 venturing around to other areas
38:47 for the next three days at least and
38:49 then after that not not just in
38:51 specifically in that town but on the
38:53 outskirts i'll be driving quite a bit of
38:55 ways around
38:57 doing lots of wonderful things and then
38:59 after that probably head back over to
39:00 the coast still
39:02 in south carolina so i've covered a lot

39:06 next
39:08 week and a half let's just say you know
