0:02 today's adventure brings us up to the
0:03 top of a mountain on an unpaved portion
0:05 of Mulholland
0:07 Drive and the views from up here aren't
0:11 too
0:18 shabby still have a ways to go however
0:18 till I reach the
0:20 top you can see it in
0:23 view right
0:26 there that's where I'm heading welcome
0:28 everyone Adam the woo here to San
0:31 Vincent Mountain Park to an old missile
0:35 site that was built during the Cold War
0:38 era sits abandoned but I use that word
0:43 very Loosely because it is open to the
0:45 public anyone can hike up here and just
0:49 look around and that's what I'm going to
0:51 do today we're going to dive into a
0:53 little bizarre history in the mountains
0:56 near Los Angeles join me sh you you can
1:00 also opt to drive up here but be aware
1:03 that the roads are closed nightly from
1:05 Sunset to 8:00 a.m. so if you
1:08 do bring a vehicle up this path don't
1:11 show up till at least 8:00
1:13 a.m. daylight hours and once you reach
1:16 the top you will see other access roads
1:18 that have Gates that are always locked
1:21 they are not accessible by motorcycles
1:24 motor scooters or other Motor Vehicles
1:27 are prohibited however there are walking
1:31 and hiking trails designated around the
1:34 side of the stanions so you can go that
1:36 way or if you're daring maybe
1:40 even down this weird pathway that's now
1:43 grown over with foliage our first
1:46 Glimpse there it
1:48 is the tower off in the distance and
1:51 here to the left the old guard
1:55 shack is still on site La 96
2:00 C formerly a Nike missile control site
2:04 US Army from 1956 to
2:07 1968 currently the San Vincent Mountain
2:10 Park gateway to the big wild restricted
2:15 entry but only for vehicles everyone
2:18 else is welcome one of 16 Nike missile
2:22 sites that protected LA from a feared
2:25 attack by Soviet bombers however new
2:28 military techn ology made those Nike
2:32 missiles Obsolete and the site has been
2:34 made into a Park Nature is reclaiming
2:38 the military ruins you know how when you
2:40 come to a railroad crossing there are
2:43 those items that come down to block the
2:45 road well I think don't quote me on this
2:47 this piece of Machinery was similar to
2:51 that parts of it on either side which
2:55 lowered and raised that's my best guess
2:59 that that the guard stood in here and
3:02 there was obviously some sort of
3:04 electrical equipment mounted
3:07 there and on the side of that concrete
3:11 wall that
3:13 operated that and the bars would come
3:16 down stopping anyone that tried to get
3:19 in right through here manned around the
3:22 clock to prevent entry of anyone not
3:25 allowed on Military business today it
3:28 has been partially restored the feeling
3:30 of the site as a heavily secured and
3:33 harsh military Outpost
3:36 proceed with caution there are quite a
3:39 few
3:40 remnants like this
4:02 a few other rules to follow up here no
4:02 defacing or destroying property no
4:05 alcoholic beverages no firearms and one
4:08 step further do not bring a bow and
4:12 arrow those are not permitted kind of
4:14 surprised to see some operating
4:15 facilities up here there's a bathroom
4:19 complex and a water
4:22 fountain today however don't want to get
4:24 too close to the water fountain there is
4:27 an
4:28 infestation of
4:30 bees can you see all those bees oh want
4:35 triy to get on my
4:36 hand listen you can hear him
4:45 swarming oh my gosh okay that's that's
4:45 too close no longer any orders or
4:47 notices posted on the board but I did
4:51 notice this dog Bowl 13 great
4:56 years that's
4:58 Bosco's dog bowl that hawk flying around
5:02 the soldiers lived
5:04 inside this fenced area and I know that
5:08 because it is written
5:09 here on this information board these are
5:12 some of some of the animals that used to
5:15 be seen very prominently around here the
5:18 mountain lion the Bobcat the gray fox
5:22 the Cotton Tail rabbit the raccoon and
5:26 the mule deer Wildlife is not as
5:28 abundant today because of urbanization
5:31 however public agencies are working
5:33 together to
5:34 conserve 200,000 acres and here's a map
5:38 a layout of the land
5:41 currently I'm right there it's a small
5:53 plane I really like all the
5:53 information placards they have up pretty
5:55 good overview of the entire area the
5:58 first thing when I ENT entered was the
6:00 century post but there's also a radar
6:03 Tower a radar
6:04 pad control trailers a generator some
6:09 water tanks some
6:11 barracks and the latrine which is the
6:15 bathroom has been replaced with a modern
6:18 restroom don't get any bright ideas to
6:19 climb to the top of the water towers
6:22 they are one step ahead of us by placing
6:25 a chunk of metal over the ladder making
6:28 it extremely difficult and dangerous
6:30 you'd probably need a tetanus shot if
6:32 you attempted it do not be too
6:34 disappointed because we are allowed to
6:38 go up
6:40 there in fact there is a very convenient
6:44 walkway with stairs how the system
6:47 worked number one radar would detect
6:49 enemy airplane followed by sending a
6:52 location to a computer the computer
6:54 would activate missile guidance radar
6:57 the missile would be launched missile
6:59 booster would fall off radar would guide
7:02 missiles to enemy airplane and a
7:04 warhead would detonate destroying
7:08 airplanes before it could bomb Los
7:12 Angeles holy
7:14 cow know your job no need for a stair
7:17 master all you need is a an old
7:21 abandoned military base get your
7:24 exercise it's a good workout 1950 ft
7:28 above sea level it's 15 Mi to downtown
7:32 and about 10 miles to Venice Beach after
7:34 Crossing that little metal bridge and
7:37 ascending these stairs we've officially
7:41 reached the
7:49 top give a little 360 view here a
7:49 meander around the
7:50 top of the
7:53 platform you can just see the
7:56 vastness of what can be seen from up
7:58 here
8:11 pretty cool You Can See For Miles up
8:11 here it's a little hazy and smoggy today
8:14 but not too terribly bad you can see way
8:16 off in the
8:18 distance I always wonder about places
8:20 like this how many people that live down
8:23 there have no idea that it
8:27 exists just above their heads certain
8:29 portions are heavily razor wired off
8:33 they do not want you scaling these
8:36 fences but you can peek in and just see
8:40 what's down there there are some former
8:44 Foundations at the bottom of the hill
8:46 that is also off limits as
8:55 well jumping that fence would not be
8:55 wise I'm not recommending it we are not
8:57 granted access to down below that grate
9:01 you can see there's some pipes leading
9:05 down into the some sort of underground
9:07 bunker below US soldiers were on a
9:10 15minute Alert in case of attack if an
9:13 enemy airplane had been located where I
9:15 am now standing computers would have
9:18 activated the missiles 4.5 miles away
9:22 for security reason the soldiers knew
9:25 only what their assigned jobs were no
9:27 one knew exactly
9:30 how the full system worked down below
9:32 the bottom of the hill now at what I
9:35 stated was a bunker in reality it's
9:37 something that is currently still
9:39 used modern day you can see the door
9:43 there and you can hear you know some
9:45 engines and
9:47 things shifting and roaring around out
9:49 in there all the bells and whistles to
9:53 keep that going from down here you can
9:56 also get a much better view of this
9:58 Relic
9:59 now this is old school and is not
10:04 currently
10:05 operational but look at that it's a
10:08 piece of History right
10:11 there now covered in Weeds and makeshift
10:14 flowers modern day look
10:17 2018 but there is a photo taking us back
10:20 to
10:22 1961 and there's that same embankment
10:25 that same
10:26 Hill right there if you want to look up
10:29 on satellite view the physical
10:32 address is placed right there painted on
10:35 the side of that electrical box it's
10:38 funny cuz when you think of mulholand
10:40 drive you don't think of the road
10:42 looking like this they collected plants
10:45 and created a small garden a tender and
10:47 hopeful symbol during the Cold War the
10:51 cactus garden quite a bit of cacti Still
10:54 Remains going down the side of the
10:56 embankment
11:03 there it is there's even there's even
11:03 some way down there and almost like a
11:06 beacon of
11:07 light popping out of the top is a desert
11:11 flower right there a beautiful
11:14 flower
11:16 amongst all
11:18 this to the bottom left of the screen
11:20 you will see a structure that looks like
11:22 a house I believe a park ranger or
11:25 someone who watches the property lives
11:27 there but that's the original location
11:29 of the barracks the barracks have been
11:32 removed and now there's a home
11:50 hello I'm yelling at a slightly light
11:50 moderate level I don't want to yell too
11:52 loud cuz I might set off this this
11:56 earthquake equipment seismic
12:00 monitoring in
12:02 progress looks like an alien or some
12:05 sort of
12:07 robot from a sci-fi movie do you have a
12:11 keen enough
12:12 eye to see the skyscrapers over the hill
12:16 in the
12:17 haze it's tough to see it I'm Zoom way
12:25 in you can barely see them there very
12:25 peaceful up here
12:29 very Serene it's amazing how you don't
12:31 have to go too far outside the
12:34 Metropolis of
12:36 downtown to just get away from it
12:43 all it's awesome up here that's going to
