welcome everyone I'm in Southern
0:14
California today and I want to show you
0:16
something that was actually created in
0:17
the 1890s and actually was stopped being
0:20
used in
0:21
1950s something here in Marino Valley
0:24
which is between what is the town we got
0:26
Redlands back here Redlands is over
0:27
there Valley over here and these are the
0:30
bad
0:31
lands wasn't there a song written about
0:33
that we are going to explore something
0:35
that is over our shoulder Justin take a
0:38
look at that that is the old marino
0:42
marino or Marino is there a marina in
0:45
Marino not nearly but there's a Marino
0:47
that's the old Marino tunnel which has
0:49
actually been non-existent for well over
0:52
half a century and we're going to see if
0:55
we can get an up close look at that half
0:58
mile tunnel make completely of brick
1:01
which is on the other side of this very
1:02
busy road I did not expect this much
1:05
traffic so let's cross the road okay and
1:07
start the Vlog you ready the other side
1:09
yes okay join us shall you great job
1:32
so right off the side of the road there
1:34
is all of this broken Concrete and brick
1:38
and people that drive by here probably
1:39
wonder what the heck is all this well
1:42
this is actually a piece of Southern
1:44
California history this was actually
1:46
created a half mile tunnel to actually
1:50
take water from Big Bear Down to the
1:52
Marino Valley and this has actually been
1:54
sitting dormant desolate rotting away
1:58
since 1950
2:00
and you can see they have actually torn
2:02
out where this was and actually I guess
2:05
probably brought some sort of like
2:07
equipment in here to smush all this down
2:10
but basically you would start here and
2:12
you would actually go underneath the
2:14
mountain for a half a mile to the other
2:17
end but this is actually the beginning
2:20
of the tunnel right here pretty
2:22
crazy there's some old photos you can
2:25
find online and this is the actual brick
2:28
this is actually a relic of History
2:29
right
2:31
here that right there is the tunnel holy
2:35
cow it's the top of the archway that
2:37
is yeah there's some old photos online
2:41
and you can actually see so basically
2:43
there was a lot more grass and dirt here
2:45
than there used to be so all this was
2:47
way lower and the tunnel started
2:50
basically right there that's the top of
2:52
the archway of the tunnel so we're
2:54
standing on hist yeah pretty wild now
2:58
recently in the last 20 or 30 years I
3:00
think theyve actually done another
3:02
tunnel just up the road but this is the
3:05
original the OG tunnel if you will
3:08
pretty cool look at this let's see if we
3:09
can get down in here and take a better
3:11
look come a little bit closer and you
3:13
can actually see it's too small to
3:15
actually get my body down inside of
3:17
there but maybe we can actually get down
3:19
in there a little lower and you can
3:21
actually kind of see can you get the
3:23
camera any lower down inside of there
3:24
like drop it
3:30
down so that's basically the tunnel
3:30
there the beginning of the
3:39
tunnel dude it's big down
3:39
there you can actually kind of tell that
3:41
if you were to get down inside there and
3:43
you were hunched over you could probably
3:45
walk a pretty good ways through the
3:46
tunnel you can see there's about four
3:48
maybe 3 to 4 ft of sod and grass here we
3:52
were not prepared to bring either a back
3:54
ho or some sort of shovels and you got
3:56
to wonder the police department that
3:58
drives by here this land is obviously
4:00
owned by someone do you think anyone
4:02
would get mad if we returned here at a
4:04
later time and maybe actually dug this
4:06
out and did an actual legit
4:09
investigation through the
4:11
tunnel maybe what do you guys think this
4:14
is actually the brick from those famous
4:16
photos so this is
4:18
actually that's history right there and
4:21
that right there is not giving away that
4:23
weighs a lot that is very heavy this is
4:26
probably about 3 ft wide so you're not
4:30
really getting through this this thing
4:31
was removed by a heavy piece of
4:32
Machinery this is not just fall apart on
4:34
its
4:35
own oh my gosh look at
4:57
here I really hope something doesn't
4:57
crawl out of here give me let me grab
4:58
this
5:09
so basically it started here and it went
5:09
1/2 Mile through the hills so we're
5:12
going to go get in my van that we parked
5:14
right down the road there and we're
5:15
going to drive around and see if we can
5:17
get to the exit which is a little bit
5:19
more exclusive in area to where we are
5:22
now so cross your fingers let's hit the
5:26
van so as we come up to this Bend
5:29
there's actually a weird little turn off
5:31
a dirt road so we're going to have to go
5:32
past it and then we're going to have to
5:33
do a U-turn and then we're going to
5:35
shimmy back onto the dirt road and go to
5:37
try to find where the exit of the Marino
5:40
tunnel was so right up here should be
5:43
the turnoff if my calculations are
5:45
correct
6:07
so you can see this is actually unpaved
6:07
this is all dirt this is not where
6:09
normal people are driving in fact most
6:11
people that are over on that pave Road
6:12
probably never drive down this way cuz
6:15
they do not realize that the exit of the
6:17
tunnel is up here and you can see how
6:19
much rain water is still
6:21
standing right here in the middle of the
6:23
road so should we go through that I
6:25
don't
6:26
know should we go through or should we
6:28
go up there
6:34
let's go this way yeah definitely want
6:34
to go through oh my
6:42
gosh oh do not get stuck look how soft
6:42
the ground
6:43
is oh man this ground is super soft I
6:47
don't want to get stuck in D Marino
6:48
Valley that ground was like Sugar Sand
6:51
back there so it's either go through the
6:53
water or go through the Sugar
6:55
Sand what's Sugar Sand I don't know but
6:58
just sounds is a
7:04
thing it looks like off in the Horizon
7:04
here you can actually see where the
7:06
tunnel exits
7:16
out I think this is it yeah that's the
7:16
catch Basin right
7:17
there let's get out
7:36
looks like someone has dumped a lot of
7:36
roofing materials shingles a bunch of
7:39
nails and look at this you can see where
7:42
this mesh that the concrete goes over
7:43
the top of and there's actually a
7:46
beehive of activity out here in the form
7:48
of actual beehives my personal favorite
7:51
so we can't get too close to those but
7:53
this is where the exit of the tunnel
7:56
once was and we're going to see if we
7:58
can find any remnant of
8:05
it basically this was the storage Basin
8:06
for the water that ran the half mile
8:07
down that tunnel so this is where the
8:09
water sat think of this as a humongous
8:12
pool so now we just have to find where
8:15
the tunnel exited and all that water was
8:17
emitted out to actually fill this area
8:20
up I found
8:22
it a swim shorts oh not the tunnel sorry
8:26
got me really excited this area
8:28
obviously used for
8:30
a lot of gun shooting here are some
8:32
shells here all along the
8:36
ground actually quite a few of
8:43
them the bees all the ground are they
8:43
dead bees yeah mostly some alive bees I
8:46
don't want to step on them because I
8:47
don't want to like stir up the hives
8:49
yeah is that is that how that works I
8:51
don't know see I've seen too many
8:52
specials about killer bees I'm afraid of
8:54
stepping on that live be there's a live
8:56
bee down there yeah right there you
8:58
going to go full Thomas J bro I hope I
9:01
don't go full Thomas J listen if I go
9:02
full Thomas J you swear you got to get
9:04
my body out of here you don't leave me
9:06
in the forest and buy a mood ring I I'll
9:09
be upset what if you're gone though do I
9:11
have permission to marry M Mr Bixler
9:13
yeah you can do whatever you want I'm
9:15
dead Adam I think the bees are starting
9:18
to suspect
9:20
something Tut it's starting to get a
9:22
little bit more active it looks like why
9:24
are we walking this way why are we going
9:26
through the there's nothing here and
9:28
that's not the only thing or the bees
9:30
there's other animals out here because
9:32
there's actually some
9:33
feces lots of feces along the ground
9:37
here wild animals have been out here it
9:41
actually smells pretty bad where I'm
9:43
standing right
9:44
now it's it reeks of poop dude what what
9:49
is this if you look closely at first I
9:51
thought this was concrete but it's
9:53
actually just hard solid dirt at first I
9:56
thought this was the exit of the tunnel
9:57
here you can see how the elevation drops
10:00
down so I was thinking down below would
10:02
be the tunnel but disappointed that it's
10:05
not the case it's just hard packed dirt
10:08
but the tunnel would have actually gone
10:11
straight that way towards us so the
10:12
tunnel the end of a tunnel is a mystery
10:36
starting to get kind of dark out here
10:36
now and we're starting to think that
10:38
maybe the droppings over there are
10:39
coyote droppings so we got to make this
10:42
fast we don't want to be out here in the
10:43
middle of the desert at nightfall
10:46
probably not the wisest thing that could
10:47
be
10:48
it this is looking very promising here
10:53
yep oh yeah oh yeah this is it okay we
10:56
have found the exit of where the tunnel
11:00
was there's the
11:02
brick ouch look right here there's the
11:06
brick pieces of the tunnel yeah look at
11:10
that here Shine the flashlight on this
11:12
brick again down here lower yeah look at
11:15
the brick put the let me see the
11:18
flashlight you can kind of see the see
11:20
the brick there look at that we found it
11:23
look down here dude this is it full of
11:25
thorns and bristles but look straight
11:27
that way a half mile was the beginning
11:30
of the Marino Valley tunnel that
11:33
actually dumped water from the late
11:35
1800s to 1950 and this is just a
11:38
forgotten relic of the past now this is
11:41
awesome I did not think we were going to
11:43
find the exit deep as I am so there's
11:46
definitely a lot filled in here I don't
11:48
know if I would jump down in there no
11:50
probably not but that's awesome let's
11:51
get a look at the bricks here again look
11:53
at
11:54
that that is so cool those are
11:57
definitely old bricks too the size is
11:58
not the same size you get at Home Depot
12:00
or something yeah hand old this is
12:03
awesome we found it guys we found it
12:06
look at
12:07
that success yes look at
12:11
this holy
12:19
cow okay look at this brick
12:20
here I don't know why I was pointing
12:22
that out but it just overly excited me
12:23
that is freaking cool look down there
12:25
there's some of the old school bricks
12:27
right there on the corner yeah
12:33
this is all made of brick too look it's
12:34
covered with concrete yeah they
12:35
concreted it over you can see the bricks
12:36
right here and there's one of the
12:38
there's a pipe that would have L into
12:39
the the drainage basin the uh catch
12:42
Basin man I was trying the flashlight
12:45
over there what's over on the corners
12:46
you see it goes all the way around yeah
12:49
so you think maybe it came down the
12:51
mountain and maybe roared around this
12:53
way and then down through there and into
12:55
the C catch Basin so there might be more
12:57
around there there was a whole channel
12:59
here look it
13:02
continues man good thing we didn't fall
13:04
into that
13:05
yeah holy cow this is pretty dangerous
13:09
yeah honestly there's a chunk of it down
13:11
here
13:12
yeah hey look and then you can see chunk
13:15
of something else oh yeah there's
13:16
definitely a chunk of that coyote dong
13:18
seeing a lot of the remnants from those
13:19
old photos from
13:22
1950 all still here and what's
13:27
this the tunnel must have ended and
13:30
poured out the water into this canal
13:32
down towards the city where Marino
13:33
Valley
13:34
is yeah look at this it's almost like a
13:36
series like a series of dams almost so
13:39
this must have been the water supply
13:41
down there towards town down along the
13:43
road towards all the ranches and the
13:45
town look at
13:48
this well we have found history here
13:52
forgotten history I'm pretty excited
13:53
about this adventure show this here real
13:55
quick show you flashlight here this is
13:57
you can see it's all bricked off like
13:59
broken up look at this just remnants
14:03
remnants of the past actually the ground
14:05
we're standing on right here on the edge
14:06
of this little like what would you call
14:08
this not the Basin but the actual
14:10
walkway the flood Canal like leading
14:12
into the Basin it's actually starting to
14:14
push down if you get close too close to
14:16
the edge it's actually the sand is
14:18
starting to give probably not too safe
14:20
for us to be standing here right now
14:21
this is a manmade Hill for
14:26
sure want to mess up you're going to
14:27
become a part of History that's crazy
14:28
look at that on the brick metal on brick
14:31
that's
14:31
weird huh I wonder if they dynamited the
14:34
entrance maybe maybe they blew it up
14:37
yeah it's obvious why they would do it I
14:40
mean that tunnel that little tunnel we
14:42
did see if you were in there you would
14:44
die that is not
14:46
safe all right
14:49
guys thanks for watching this video and
14:51
thanks to Justin scard right here from
14:54
live fast I poor check out his channel
14:55

15:05
guys in the next video
15:13
goodbye what kind of tracks are these
15:13
does anyone know what sort of these are
15:15
not human tracks Justin no look at that
15:19
place your foot in there could be a
15:20
small human or that is what kind of
15:23
tracks are
15:25
these question of the day a bee
15:29
okay I see it behave you I don't know
15:31
what all the buzz is about you better
15:34
quit
15:39
it there's so many nails and metal out
15:39
here we're just doing a quick check on
15:40
my van to see if maybe I got a nail see
15:42
if I have a flat tire anywhere on the
15:45
van hopefully not before we
15:48
depart so we're looking good on this
15:51
side all right we're good to go is that
15:55
good okay we're good all right we're out
15:58
of here
