0:04 tear it up stickers not nearly enough
0:04 now Memorial Day employ Baltimore
0:06 Maryland the stomping grounds of the one
0:10 and only Edgar Allan po check out this
0:16 this mural right here painted that's
0:19 it's quite a few years old they call
0:21 these row homes some of them are pretty
0:24 incredible looking check this one out
0:26 completely covered in foliage the
0:30 architecture is amazing the windows look
0:32 at these windows up
0:34 top no one's living in them completely
0:37 abandoned painting on the side of a
0:40 twocan some of the doors are completely
0:43 open and
0:51 accessible not the most structurally
0:51 sound buildings that's for sure this
0:54 painted signs have been there since
0:56 probably the turn of the century maybe
0:58 even longer than that
1:04 absolutely incredible welcome everyone
1:04 Adam the woo here and in the midst of
1:06 this neighborhood is the
1:09 Homestead of the man himself Mr Poe and
1:15 the famous window where his writing desk
1:18 was right up there in that top window
1:22 it's my second channel daily Vlog
1:23 channel
1:24 it's the daily W he shared this home
1:28 with his invalid grandmother his first
1:30 cousin and his aunt who was desperately
1:33 poor but still willing to provide a home
1:36 for her temperamental young nephew but
1:38 you don't want to stop and stay too long
1:40 there is a
1:41 2hour parking limit though so if you
1:43 stand here for more than 120
1:46 Minutes Matt Penfield will come out
1:49 scold you according to this placard in
1:52 1972 the building itself was put on the
1:55 National Registry of historical places
1:57 this area here where they're doing
1:59 construction at the time he resided here
2:02 was a pig
2:04 farm and he would look out that very
2:08 window
2:10 sill with his pen and paper there are a
2:12 few other onlookers including Dan Bell
2:16 standing over there talking to a local
2:19 photographer it was here that he decided
2:21 to turn his hand from writing poetry to
2:24 fiction and also a little fact he ended
2:27 up marrying Virginia clim
2:30 who was actually his cousin not able to
2:32 get inside today but you've been inside
2:34 the building before Oh yes and you were
2:36 saying there's a guest book in there and
2:37 a certain someone wrote something
2:39 interesting and who was that someone
2:41 yeah uh Vincent Price stopped by the
2:43 house uh I believe in the 7s or ' 80s I
2:47 can't recall when but anyway he said
2:49 he's the the entry says this place gives
2:52 me the creeps Vincent Price yeah the one
2:54 and only Vincent Price and Stephen King
2:56 came here with his son too really yeah
2:58 Stephen King brought his son here and
3:00 they uh they were at an Orioles game and
3:02 they came over here to see the Edgar
3:04 Island po house walking through downtown
3:08 now and the interesting thing about
3:10 Baltimore is there is a cemetery smack
3:17 dab in between all of the large
3:20 buildings and that's where I'm heading
3:21 over across the road
3:25 there right here
3:27 amongst all the traffic and commuters
3:31 businesses and offices if you walk all
3:33 the way to the back of the cemetery it's
3:37 where he was originally buried and then
3:39 later on they moved them closer to the
3:41 front so we're going to take a look at
3:43 the original location first through this
3:46 door that is locked there are some
3:49 underground catacombs that go directly
3:52 under the
3:53 church and the graves themselves can't
3:56 get in
3:57 there there's another interesting piece
4:00 here that was featured on Ripley Believe
4:02 It or Not the way this piece of marble
4:06 is
4:07 bending it's very unusual you rarely
4:10 will
4:12 see that type of stone or Rock bending
4:15 in that fashion but it's true believe it
4:21 or not normally when someone is moved
4:23 from one spot to another there really
4:26 isn't anything
4:28 designating the the original spot this
4:31 is an exception however there is a
4:34 headstone where he was originally placed
4:37 which would have been here even though
4:39 he's not here anymore people are
4:42 leaving letters and
4:45 flowers to where his body once was
4:51 intuned that's a little different you
4:53 normally don't see that the Raven carved
4:56 in the
4:57 top and right next to the
5:00 location is the final resting place of
5:03 his grandfather David Poe senior October
5:05 8th 1849 on a cold and damp overcast
5:10 Monday
5:12 afternoon right here as you make your
5:14 way down this pathway which also serves
5:17 as a water drainage area there is a seat
5:22 here but don't be fooled this was not
5:24 created to sit on it's actually two
5:27 graves one there and another one a step
5:31 up leading into that window walking
5:35 around the side of the church why do you
5:37 think they moved him up to the front
5:39 what was the purpose of well it they
5:41 wanted to put him in a more prominent uh
5:43 location kind of like a touristy thing
5:45 get people to come to town but they they
5:47 redid that a long time ago it was just
5:48 it was just about prominence cuz is too
5:50 many people are coming to visit they
5:52 don't want him trouncing back to the
5:53 back yeah and I think it was out of
5:55 respect that he was such a you know like
5:57 a literary genius
6:00 um that he was you know he is the most
6:02 famous person buried here so they moved
6:05 him to the front and erected this
6:06 monument and he's now
6:09 located right here that's where we just
6:12 were right
6:15 here this is where I'm
6:18 standing
6:19 currently he was moved in the
6:22 1800s I thought it was a little more in
6:24 recent days but it's actually a very
6:26 long time ago that they moved the body
6:29 from the back back up to the front
6:30 November 17th of
6:33 1875 and here is an artist rendition of
6:37 what happened the
6:38 unveiling on that day this is a photo of
6:41 the house where I was earlier this
6:44 building has been completely removed
6:48 there's that
6:49 window and not only is he ined here but
6:54 also his wife's
6:56 mother and on this side stay
7:00 that his wife also lays here right next
7:05 to the
7:07 traffic the hubub the
7:10 Holo of any downtown people passing by
7:13 you have to wonder how many have no clue
7:17 at
7:19 all that they are passing
7:21 by the legend himself so this is all
7:26 like you know in really good condition
7:29 Everything clean cuz people haven't been
7:30 touching it so then over here everyone
7:32 puts their hands on this they do
7:34 rubbings a lot of people you can see
7:36 here this is all from people doing
7:39 rubbings so they put the wax paper over
7:41 it and then they do a rubbing of it but
7:43 that's why it's so you put a piece of
7:45 paper over this and like a pencil or
7:47 something yeah and then you rub and you
7:48 can get the grave rubbing I never
7:51 thought about doing that that would be
7:52 interesting but I could see how it
7:53 definitely causes permanent damage yeah
7:55 it damages the the
7:58 uh it can be restored but they should
8:00 really put like something over it over
8:02 it that used to be the only entryway
8:05 into the property but over time when
8:06 more and more people wanted to come pay
8:08 their respects they built a second set
8:11 of gates down on the end closer to the
8:15 monument one thing this city has is
8:19 personality oozing from every angle just
8:23 look
8:24 at these old buildings
8:27 everywhere incredible
8:30 oh my gosh look there's a horse
8:33 here and a carriage a rather obscure
8:35 piece of History tying into the story
8:37 happened inside this building here that
8:40 is known as the Latrobe house in October
8:46 1833 these three gentlemen poured over
8:49 manuscripts submitted in a literary
8:51 contest sponsored by The Baltimore Sun
8:54 visitor their unanimous Choice was a
8:58 tale by
9:00 this gentleman right here at the time an
9:04 unknown pennil author that's the new
9:08 doorbell but back in the day this was
9:10 the doorbell system you would pull on
9:13 this and it would what would it do like
9:15 ring a bell inside yeah yeah it would
9:17 you would pull it back and forth it
9:18 would ring a bell so if you just did
9:19 that over and over and over and over and
9:21 over they would get very irritated yes
9:24 it's a good thing it's not working
9:25 anymore because whoever actually resides
9:27 inside here they would not like that I
9:30 was doing that but it doesn't work
9:31 anymore that's just a relic of the past
9:33 you have to wonder what if he had not
9:35 won that contest what if he did not get
9:36 the $50 prize would he have continued to
9:39 write things like that always make me go
9:44 H stories so it has all of his stories
9:47 in one
9:49 book here's another one
9:51 here The Narrative of Arthur Gordon
9:56 Pim great Tales
9:59 including the
10:01 Raven Tales of mystery and
10:05 Imagination downtown Baltimore you can
10:07 come check out a
10:09 book here's um barones which is uh the
10:14 story that um that they think he wrote
10:17 it's not very long story but in his
10:19 house right yes in the house oh here it
10:21 is yeah right there he would have been
10:25 looking out that window misy is a
10:26 manifold out at the pigs when he wrote
10:29 that
10:30 pretty
10:38 cool this whole area is known as the
10:38 Oldtown Mall a couple stores are open
10:41 but the majority of
10:43 it is closed and
10:56 incredible doesn't get much more retro
10:56 than that light fixture
11:00 right there I think someone has taken a
11:02 crowbar tried to get in the back of that
11:05 door the parking lot has not had a car
11:07 in in quite some time completely grown
11:09 over with weeds it's just on the
11:11 outskirts of downtown in fact a pretty
11:14 good view of the skyline going to get
11:17 some dinner now at
11:19 Chaps pit
11:21 beef and this is what we're dealing with
11:24 look how good this looks and it's going
11:26 to even be even better with a little dab
11:29 of
11:29 BBQ sauce on it and I got some potato
11:33 salad and we are
11:35 sharing some
11:58 good heading to a couple more spots to
11:58 tie it with the subject
12:00 matter this building here to the left
12:03 used to be a hospital and this
12:07 is where he
12:09 died inside that structure erected in
12:14 1836 he was brought here ill and
12:17 semiconscious on October 3rd
12:20 1849 died 4 days later
12:36 whatever you
12:36 do don't look
12:49 down we wandered around all inside found
12:49 something on the Internet and they said
12:50 there's a placard on the room outside of
12:54 where he actually died we couldn't find
12:57 it you found a website that gave the
12:59 information and we pretty much meandered
13:03 the entire premises and found
13:08 nothing nothing now heading into an area
13:11 of town called Fels point for one last
13:14 stop the last on the PO tour the horse
13:18 you came in on and according to this
13:20 washboard it is America's oldest Saloon
13:23 established in
13:25 1775 and it was his last stop that's
13:28 where he had his last beverage now no
13:30 one knows for certain but some of the
13:33 stories will tell you he was inside
13:36 having a few drinks at the bar heavily
13:39 documented now with photos and
13:42 paraphernalia of the man himself so when
13:44 you're in here hanging out you can see
13:47 Edgar Allen almost like he's vicariously
13:50 hanging out with you but they say he
13:53 exited the bar and upon doing that there
13:57 are rumors Not only was he drunk but he
14:01 was beaten up and left for dead that's
14:04 when he went to the
14:06 hospital and his
14:08 life came to an
14:11 end who knows if it's really true it's a
14:13 subject of speculation on how how it all
14:17 ended
14:19 Vlog over
