0:02 welcome everyone
0:02 out of the Wu here as the recording of
0:04 This is February 1st what day of the
0:06 week is it Wednesday Wednesday
0:08 February 1st 2023 Daphne is here and we
0:13 are doing something I've wanted to do
0:14 for quite a while the filming locations
0:17 of La La Land yeah I'm so excited I love
0:20 this movie the amazing thing is it came
0:23 out in 2016 it's been seven years
0:24 already does it feel like it's been that
0:26 long where has the time gone oh my
0:29 goodness and it's kind of interesting
0:31 I'll talk about the other course of the
0:33 day but this this movie is part of the
0:35 reason I lived in Orange County for a
0:37 while was part of the reason I moved to
0:38 Hollywood Boulevard back in 2017. after
0:41 you know I'll explain it as the course
0:43 of the day but we're gonna film
0:44 basically a lot of the spots I'm gonna
0:46 say probably 75 80 of all the spots for
0:48 the movie All Around SoCal not in order
0:52 a continuity of the film just in order
0:54 so we could do it all in one day yeah
0:56 definitely I'm so excited to see all the
0:58 places because as you know and I know
1:01 getting around SoCal on a weekday with
1:04 traffic kind of time consuming yeah and
1:06 all the places are so spread out too
1:08 very very strong but we're gonna do it
1:10 I'm inviting you to join me and Daphne
1:13 for La La Land
1:14 I have brought a clipboard full of a lot
1:17 of screen grabs here
1:20 and where we were just standing at the
1:22 Retro Dairy Mart is right across from
1:25 the Van Beek
1:27 where Ryan Gosling would sit and look
1:29 across and dream of the future jazz club
1:32 that he was going to open which is right
1:34 here across the road we'll walk over
1:35 there in a moment there was one scene
1:37 where
1:38 there's like a little Montage scene
1:40 where him and Mia go over there and they
1:42 destroy the signage on the van big so
1:45 we'll go over there and show that in a
1:46 minute but just to show the coordinate
1:48 uh the the area it says on the corner of
1:50 Magnolia and Clybourn Ave the Retro
1:53 Dairy Mart still has the same signage
1:55 you said this place has been closed for
1:57 a while right yeah I think for the
2:00 pandemic or right around that time so
2:01 it's been a few years since it's been
2:03 shut
2:04 it'd be kind of nice if it was open
2:05 because we get a little coffee here yeah
2:08 and pretend we were Sebastian sitting
2:10 here drinking the coffee looking across
2:12 at the band beak
2:14 um
2:15 and it was a really neat mural of I
2:18 think it was like an orange
2:20 an Orange Grove but here he is pulling
2:23 in his kind of classic car Alert in
2:25 front of the drive-through of the Retro
2:27 Dairy and you can see even the distance
2:29 everything off the side the building
2:30 over there with the garages and all that
2:33 looked the same and the signage that
2:35 they built on
2:37 or they took down
2:40 a little overhang here and built a
2:42 different one but he was basically just
2:44 sitting kind of right over here at a
2:46 table
2:51 and the mural you were referring to was
2:51 right here where it says free parking or
2:53 free delivery parking in rear now a
2:56 sushi place
2:58 has the California mural here and then
3:00 the oranges there
3:02 I would imagine they probably just
3:03 painted that on for the film
3:07 and all the times that you've lived in
3:08 in La have you ever do you remember that
3:10 looking like this here
3:12 um now I think that they filmed it
3:14 before I moved on the side of the Hill
3:15 okay
3:16 now it's just a brown wall one more
3:19 little view here
3:21 of what it looks like look there was
3:23 more palm trees out front too so you can
3:25 see over there a couple of the palm
3:26 trees have been removed
3:28 since that time frame you see our
3:30 shadows today it's been kind of overcast
3:31 and cloudy recently but today well now
3:35 we can't see our shadows but now we're
3:36 gonna go back into which is kind of fun
3:38 because it's like you know the one of
3:40 the main songs is another day of sun
3:42 approaching the Van Beek Now spoiler
3:45 alert he never did put his jazz club in
3:47 this location where he ended up opening
3:50 it sebs it's at a different spot later
3:52 in the film we'll go by there as well
3:54 address is 4403
4:03 oh there it goes Tapas and tunes
4:03 this is right before he took the top of
4:06 that signage and smashed it right there
4:10 I really like the front of this place
4:12 though with the
4:13 the designs down there and the doors are
4:16 kind of very unique they still look
4:17 exactly the same as they did one thing
4:21 about that scene you'll notice over our
4:22 shoulder is a little security camera
4:25 back there
4:26 so someone did come over here and try to
4:28 smash one of the signs
4:30 he could have ended up you know getting
4:32 a getting a fine of some sort of in
4:34 doing some jail time yeah nothing to
4:36 twisting the movie could have
4:38 considerably changed the course of the
4:40 film it's also kind of unique that this
4:41 is the same signage a lot of times
4:43 they'll change a building but they this
4:46 is all the same signage and everything
4:49 including this over here
4:51 so seven years later well gosh maybe
4:54 eight years they probably filmed it in
4:55 15 if it came out in 16 right yeah they
4:57 probably
5:02 film years or so it's just still sitting
5:02 here so really there's some screen used
5:04 items here
5:07 it's just still around
5:09 tables are all gone now where he was
5:10 sitting kind of get that perspective he
5:12 was right over here
5:26 he would go out of his way he says in
5:26 the film he'd go out of his way to sit
5:28 here and drink coffee just so we could
5:29 dream about one day owning that place
5:31 it's also a montage scene and in that
5:33 Montage scene they show a lot of famous
5:34 La spots I'll show a couple of as we go
5:37 along but one of them here Patty's is
5:40 right
5:41 over there
5:43 so they use that in the Montage they
5:45 didn't film anything inside but
5:48 that's the sign we've eaten there lots
5:51 of times
5:51 we are now over on the 101 freeway
5:55 overlooking
5:57 Hollywood in the distance which you can
5:59 see in a lot of those montage and
6:01 driving scenes downtown L.A off in the
6:04 distance and this is the very Hill the
6:07 very incline where Mia gets her car
6:09 towed
6:11 that's just the top of this hill looking
6:13 down at the Hollywood Tower down there
6:23 the interesting thing is these the angle
6:23 looking back which is looking at the tow
6:26 away Zone sign is not up here
6:35 movie Magic but this angle here is not
6:35 at the top of the hill it looks
6:36 completely different
6:38 than this this could be anywhere because
6:40 all the locations are so spread out
6:43 find any info or match up any street
6:46 signs
6:53 she walks down this hill past the
6:53 Hollywood Tower
6:55 down Vine Street and into Hollywood
6:58 proper I was kind of hoping to match up
7:00 this exact screen used sign
7:04 but to no avail
7:06 fact I know it's a different area
7:08 because here it is ten to six
7:11 and it was nine to six on the other one
7:16 so it's a mystery this is where she's
7:18 standing directly in the middle of the
7:19 street she has her her hands on her hips
7:21 here because she knows she has to walk
7:23 down the Steep Hill
7:24 and that is the incline looking this way
7:28 he thought about maybe standing in the
7:30 road
7:32 framing that up but might not be the
7:34 smartest idea as she goes down the hill
7:37 you see the Castle Argyle located on the
7:40 corner of Franklin and Argyle and also
7:43 she walks down the hill
7:46 is this moment and it's actually in
7:50 continuity and is able to be walked in
7:53 real time he turned here on to Argyle
7:55 and right over there is the mural she
7:58 walks past
7:59 as shown here this mural's been here for
8:02 quite a while
8:04 see the cars even the electrical box is
8:06 still over there
8:07 and everything
8:08 you don't really see a top portion but
8:10 you see
8:11 I Love Lucy up top here you can't really
8:13 see it but in reality it's still there
8:15 as shown right there
8:22 still looks exactly the same all these
8:22 years later I mean it's only been what
8:23 seven eight years but yeah
8:25 has it been tagged up or spray painted
8:27 over if it has
8:28 they've fixed it up to look like it does
8:30 it looked like it does now now over to
8:31 the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox next
8:34 to Playmate shoes is this very famous
8:36 mural for La it's like a theater and it
8:39 has a lot of the little Hollywood
8:40 players Famous folk through time sitting
8:43 watching their own films or sitting
8:45 watching Hollywood films and this was
8:47 the exterior of liptons not the interior
8:50 just the exteriors where Sebastian gets
8:53 the job and also gets fired
8:55 for playing the wrong songs on the piano
8:57 he wanted to play jazz and the owner of
8:59 liptas wanted him to play Christmas
9:01 songs which he didn't want to play I
9:02 Feel Like That was not really showing
9:04 his talents but when Mia would walk past
9:07 this mural right over here what is now
9:09 the Muse lifestyle group was the front
9:12 entrance of lipton's they have this
9:14 photo as she finished walking by she
9:17 hears the music she hears him playing
9:18 the piano in there and she walks in the
9:21 door still has those very unique kind of
9:24 blocks there we'll walk across the
9:26 street to kind of look at it you can
9:27 almost see that pole still there and
9:29 everything I think the door's still the
9:30 same too I have a close-up
9:44 and you're hearing some music coming
9:44 inside the door
9:46 right there
9:47 even though they didn't film in there
9:49 she does open the door she grabs the
9:50 handle and opens that door but look at
9:52 this this has been kind of busted out
9:54 here
9:55 so you just walk the same pathway as Mia
9:57 did
9:58 going in
10:03 to hear Sebastian playing the piano for
10:03 the first time
10:05 you just there you go
10:11 obviously as a movie none of them are
10:11 busted out and they also have this kind
10:13 of unique neon red red orangish Neon
10:17 and placed on the exterior of the bricks
10:20 as well
10:22 so if you open in this open this door it
10:24 does not lead to the Interiors in fact
10:27 it jumps over to right across from
10:28 Warner Brothers which we're gonna go
10:30 a little bit later
10:33 I always think what if she walked by
10:34 here and didn't hear the piano
10:38 yeah what if they would have got her and
10:40 then what if she hurt what if she didn't
10:42 hear the piano but she did hear the
10:43 piano but what if later
10:45 she wouldn't they would have got caught
10:47 for busting the sign
10:49 over at the the jazz place
10:52 I don't know just a lot of what
10:54 they would have met at the pool oh
10:56 that's right they would have met at the
10:57 pool party
10:58 she would have still requested Iraq what
11:00 if she still would have requested Iran I
11:03 don't know it's a lot of what ifs all
11:04 right we got to get this for posterity
11:07 front of the mural the walking mural
11:09 there
11:10 this thing has been here for a long time
11:12 this mural in fact one time it was kind
11:15 of graffitied and tagged over in the
11:16 city every time that happens I don't
11:18 know if the city someone will come in
11:20 and repaint it and touch it up because
11:22 it's a historic mural not just because
11:24 of La La Land but just in general a lot
11:26 of famous faces on here
11:31 all right let's move on to the next spot
11:31 but we're in the neighborhood
11:33 swinging by the Chinese Theater where
11:35 there are the La La Land hand prints
11:38 that were put here a few years ago kind
11:40 of up towards the corner like kind of
11:42 over there in the in a little corner
11:43 right in that little section down on the
11:46 bottom of the floor you have the cast
11:48 and their hand prints right here on the
11:50 the famous world famous Chinese Theater
11:54 I figure it's kind of a nice tie-in not
11:55 not necessarily A filming location but
11:57 you know it was close you might as well
11:59 show the handprints I was reading
12:00 something earlier it's kind of
12:01 interesting so Emma Watson originally
12:02 was going to play Mia she was under
12:04 contract to do Beauty and the Beast to
12:06 live action so she couldn't do it so
12:08 Emma Stone ended up taking the role and
12:10 then in a nice interesting correlation
12:12 also Ryan Gosling so this is kind of a
12:15 weird tie-in between all the that all
12:18 with with the Emma's and the Ryan
12:20 Gosling Ryan Gosling turned down the
12:22 role of Beast from Beauty of the beast
12:25 in 2016 during the Academy Awards the
12:28 movie ended up getting a lot of
12:30 nominations and won quite a few things
12:32 in fact it almost won best picture there
12:34 was the whole mix-up I think probably
12:36 before the the Will Smith incident last
12:38 year was probably one of the the biggest
12:40 biggest stories ever to come out of the
12:43 recent Oscars where Moonlight which
12:46 really won was not called out llama Lane
12:48 was called out everybody went up and
12:50 made the announcements it was kind of an
12:51 awkward thing we've now made it over on
12:53 the Santa Monica Boulevard we are now
12:55 walking towards the end of the movie
12:56 where Mia and her eventual husband
12:59 spoiler alert not Sebastian we're
13:03 walking Faith going towards sebs
13:07 this is the exterior of steps which was
13:10 Sebastian's jazz place he did not like
13:12 the name of earlier in the movie but he
13:14 eventually took Mia's advice
13:18 and chose the name sebs they walked
13:22 right in here it's all being remodeled
13:25 here at 6202
13:28 and they would have gone down some
13:30 stairs now the Interiors were elsewhere
13:32 but what we're looking at right here
13:35 we're standing underneath the awning
13:37 they walked in
13:38 and they were walking directly that way
13:40 now one way you can really tell this is
13:42 the spot too is because when Sebastian
13:45 pulls his car up he pulls it up directly
13:48 in front of this metal box notice that
13:51 it has the lock there on the side same
13:53 lock same metal box same pole over to
13:57 the side right here and when he gets out
13:59 of the car after he gets out of his car
14:01 Parks the classic car here on the side
14:02 of the road walks past his place
14:12 Mia's photo is on an upcoming movie
14:12 poster right here on the side of this
14:14 very wall but there it is there's her
14:16 face on the side there he turned the
14:18 corner the awning is gone
14:22 but this is it looks a lot different
14:23 they've completely changed the stucco
14:25 and everything changing the exterior of
14:27 the building
14:29 this is sebs the exterior of sebs one
14:31 last little frame of reference so this
14:34 parking meter and you can kind of see
14:36 the little indentation for the water
14:37 drain down there the water meter down
14:40 there that's that
14:42 and that's this right here so just kind
14:44 of like showing that put the windows off
14:47 to the side of these stores and and
14:49 everything so that's
14:51 that's more or less that angle right
14:54 a couple miles away walking up now to
14:56 the corner while I parked down the way I
14:58 drove over here
14:59 I got out of the car walking up to the
15:01 corner of Beverly Boulevard
15:03 to this place called the jar or maybe
15:06 just jar
15:13 Corner in fact you could see
15:13 in the movie she had made plans to go
15:16 see Rubble without a cause
15:18 and didn't realize that her and her then
15:21 boyfriend who she broke up with at this
15:22 moment
15:24 had a dinner date with his brother I
15:26 believe it was and you can see the tree
15:28 here still looks the same as like she
15:31 comes running out of but she goes inside
15:34 here I believe the Interiors were in
15:35 here as well
15:36 but gets up from her table says I'm
15:38 sorry
15:39 she hears music you don't know if she's
15:41 just imagining the music
15:44 or maybe it's really coming through the
15:46 speakers and playing the the tunes
15:48 through there I kind of believe that
15:49 maybe it's in her mind and maybe she
15:51 just wants to hear the music of the
15:53 piano that Sebastian is playing but she
15:55 runs out of this very door they had some
15:57 Hedges placed here you can even see this
16:00 very unique tree
16:02 that is placed there as well as shown
16:04 right there and as she runs out the
16:07 camera kind of it's kind of like this
16:09 and it pulls back very quickly as she's
16:12 running across you see the name of the
16:15 establishment
16:16 and then the camera
16:18 kind of pans up into the trees in fact
16:20 there's like a kind of a crane shot that
16:22 goes like way up
16:24 like this
16:27 and follows her
16:29 down the road way up high
16:33 in fact you can see that awning with the
16:34 address 8225
16:36 on the angle as well a very beautiful
16:38 scene but she runs around the corner you
16:41 can even see the little yellow loading
16:42 zone
16:43 sign that's still there as well as the
16:46 awning and of course all the trees match
16:49 up and everything as well
16:52 a number on the awning
16:54 I mean she just runs down the road
16:57 into the night there's only one brief
16:59 moment here at the Chateau Marmont West
17:02 Hollywood where you see Mia pulling in
17:05 which he later on in the movie A couple
17:07 years later when she gets rich and
17:08 famous and becomes a famous actress she
17:12 goes back to film a movie and she stays
17:14 here as shown here
17:17 definitely in that scene a lot less
17:19 traffic and all those cars driving
17:21 through just hurt one car pull it into
17:23 there now made the commute up to towards
17:26 the Hollywood side
17:28 side of Griffith Park
17:35 the Griffith Observatory
17:36 when they got done well kind of sort of
17:38 watching rub Without a Cause the screen
17:40 ended up breaking
17:41 as it was getting started like halfway
17:43 through
17:44 she had a great idea let's just go up to
17:46 the observatory I kind of looked at this
17:48 scene as more of a dream sequence than
17:50 reality in fact you cannot drive a
17:54 vehicle
17:55 up here like you can just like
17:57 me and Sebastian did
17:59 so they drove along so and rub Without a
18:01 Cause the vehicle drives right along
18:03 here these are obviously workers these
18:05 are not normal guests
18:07 and they also follow suit and drive
18:10 their vehicle and park right up towards
18:13 towards the front
18:15 emulating
18:17 Rebel that is the real life city of
18:20 stars
18:21 are they shining just for me as the
18:23 lyrics Say in the movie
18:25 and both of them are kind of roaming
18:27 around this little atrium about the
18:29 little Overlook here
18:30 looking for a door to go inside because
18:34 it's closed so they end up finding the
18:36 door which is right here over to the
18:38 side
18:39 so we've been that big metal door and
18:42 they go inside and they have the
18:43 observatory all to themselves it just
18:46 kind of hit me it's been a long time
18:48 since I've been up here probably since I
18:50 moved out of Hollywood the 10 miles
18:52 since I've been up here too there was
18:53 one time you and I came up here years
18:55 ago and we realized we could not get a
18:57 ride share vehicle back down yeah the
19:00 road closed at like nine or something
19:02 and literally took a taxi
19:05 down the hill it was like a 20 tax to go
19:08 like half a mile literally just down the
19:10 hill so they would let taxis up here but
19:12 not ride share Vehicles yeah not any
19:14 Ubers we had so many like cancel on us
19:16 all right let's go with the camera
19:19 inside oh yeah Hollywood side right over
19:23 foreign
19:30 I
19:30 think they did
19:38 also I was noticing too in all of La La
19:38 Land they never show the Hollywood Sign
19:39 yeah that is not when you said that I
19:41 was like wow
19:42 I wonder maybe this
19:50 one takes so you can see over here where
19:50 they're dancing and right before they
19:51 went over by where that elevator is
19:55 they ended up standing right here in
19:58 front of this little information plaque
20:00 and that's where they linked up hands
20:02 even if you watch the movie you can see
20:04 the pendulum is swinging
20:07 and then they start dancing over to the
20:11 right there and the Tesla coil scene as
20:15 well where you can see the you can see
20:18 the telescope there off in the distance
20:21 when they're like kind of walking in
20:22 okay you got the telescope there
20:25 walk in directly this way they look over
20:27 at the Tesla coil
20:29 Sebastian kind of gets surprised by it
20:31 but here is the Tesla coil in that sand
20:35 what if it still works if you turn it on
20:38 they do the Tesla coil like every hour
20:40 or so as we just missed the testing of
20:43 the testicle if we didn't have a bunch
20:46 of other spots to get around greater LA
20:48 area probably showcase it but and again
20:52 now here is the planetarium now they did
20:54 not use the Interiors of that the Samuel
20:58 Austin planetarium Interiors were not
21:00 used they built a set for that and since
21:02 this is a spot from this is the exact
21:04 spot from Rebel Without a Cause I got
21:06 the bullets so yeah you've never seen it
21:10 I've heard singing it we're trying to
21:12 recreate the scene
21:15 we both we've both seen Rebel Without a
21:17 Cause many times but in the movie
21:19 they're having that conversation
21:25 I'm not the best actor
21:25 heck pull off Ryan Gosling pretty well
21:26 though
21:27 it's uncanny it's uncanny
21:31 Valley
21:33 towards the very end of the movie
21:34 they're sitting on a bench in this
21:36 little concrete slab it's next to a
21:38 little dirt path walkway below the
21:39 observatory
21:41 way down there and movie Magic they
21:43 built look at downtown LA over there
21:46 looking great but they built it right
21:47 down there
21:54 not a real bench and not a real slab
21:54 when they're having their conversation
21:56 about how
21:57 they're always going to love each other
21:58 forever from The Observatory made it
22:00 over to South Pasadena here on the
22:02 corner of Oxley Street
22:05 where Mia is driving from an odd a
22:08 failed audition driving this way and
22:10 she's kind of bummed out that didn't go
22:12 according to plan but then she remembers
22:14 she has a date here at the Rialto
22:17 Theater because she sees it out the side
22:20 of her driver side seat window
22:25 showed here to see Rubble Without a
22:27 Cause which is interesting we just
22:29 commuted over from the observatory about
22:31 25 25 minute commute give or take one
22:34 thing I like even though she didn't show
22:35 up he just continued going on with
22:38 seeing the movie he just still went
22:40 inside now this is a church building now
22:43 they're using it for a church or right
22:45 there was the Rebel Without a Cause
22:46 poster and the ticket booth right here
22:49 in the middle as well I never realized
22:51 there's a star down there as well
22:52 because the camera is held more like
22:54 this but there's the the top portion of
22:56 the the lights and the
22:58 let the neon but the top portion of the
23:01 Marquee looking up at it there
23:09 also some other posters that were there
23:09 Farewell to Arms radio Patrol
23:13 and they even had someone in the chicken
23:15 Booth right here
23:19 and I believe the Interiors were also
23:21 filmed in there as well
23:23 talk about the
23:25 oh opening night at the Rialto for the
23:28 Centennial Celebration 1988. fun fact
23:31 about this theater this the Interiors of
23:33 this were also used in Thriller you've
23:36 ever seen the meme of Michael Jackson
23:37 eating the popcorn the GIF is right
23:40 inside here as well all right drove over
23:42 to another area dog barking over there
23:45 parked the rental car here
23:48 now this spot here very unique with the
23:50 palm trees and the mountain in the
23:53 background this is where she shows up
23:55 for an audition short-lived audition to
23:58 Parks your car right here in this
24:00 parking lot and then heads in
24:03 and the talent agent stated to hear a
24:06 couple lines and decide that's good
24:08 enough
24:09 she got kind of upset and then the next
24:11 scene this looks like this building is
24:12 completely empty now she runs out well
24:15 not runs out but she walks out
24:16 bristfully this is the scene right
24:18 before the Rialto Theater When She
24:19 Drives By in the bad mood and then
24:21 remembers they're going to see the movie
24:23 together
24:24 and then this angle here
24:30 is where she's kind of taking her jacket
24:30 off
24:31 very upset that she's not going to get
24:33 that that role that she was looking
24:34 forward to being in the TV show this
24:37 wall matches up and this tree leading
24:39 tree still looks the same
24:42 right here
24:48 and then of course this I really love
24:48 this View
24:52 but you see the building behind it there
24:52 is kind of overgrown now if you Parks
24:54 your car right over here
24:57 and the boxes that are on the side I
24:59 guess maybe like a dumpsters behind
25:00 there but they've been busted out as
25:02 well the the bottom portion down there
25:05 it's already missing a
25:06 missing a section for one reason or
25:08 another this image kind of always sits
25:10 in my head from the film I know it's
25:11 always liked the angle of this at the
25:14 mountains behind there
25:16 and all that
25:18 kind of as I was saying when it comes to
25:20 like moving back to California I lived
25:22 in Orange County for a couple of years
25:24 about a year and a half 2015 to 16. and
25:27 then I bought an RV I traveled did
25:28 things like that for another year and I
25:30 was visiting my sister who lives in
25:31 Indiana and my mom was also visiting and
25:34 they were watching I had never seen it
25:36 but they put La La Land on and as I was
25:39 kind of you know watching it they were
25:41 showing a lot of the stuff around La
25:43 like the observatory Angels Flight you
25:46 know not the Hollywood sign but Griffith
25:48 Park you know all the downtown LA
25:51 and it really kind of made me maybe Miss
25:53 Southern California and then I thought
25:54 then and there I'm gonna look up
25:56 apartments and I did flew out and looked
25:59 at the apartment on Hollywood Boulevard
26:00 and got it not necessarily because of La
26:03 La Land but it definitely inspired me
26:05 and made me remember
26:06 how much I love the Lost Greater Los
26:08 Angeles area you know driving over the
26:10 Colorado Bridge Colorado Street Bridge
26:22 of architecture here and this is during
26:22 the Montage scene where they can be seen
26:24 walking across here through the street
26:25 lamps and everything's still match up
26:27 and this is what it looks like they'll
26:30 do a lot of road work on there too
26:32 check out classic carler going by there
26:34 as they're walking by
26:36 I think they must have taken the fences
26:37 down to get this too because there's
26:39 like real big fences up now both sides
26:41 of the bridge definitely covering some
26:42 ground today
26:43 we're going all around Greater Los
26:45 Angeles area you can see downtown's now
26:47 way over there we've got around it now
26:50 heading to Long Beach
26:53 these palm trees
26:55 prominently shown in the scene and also
26:57 the coloration of Mia's apartment
26:59 still looks the same painted pink kind
27:02 of a faded Peak now but pink nonetheless
27:11 and oh it looks like the foliage has
27:11 kind of grown a little bit since then
27:13 but she walks out of here
27:20 first your roommates asked her to go to
27:20 the party and she says no I'm just going
27:21 to kind of hang out hang out at home
27:23 tonight and then she gets a
27:25 desire to go and then she walks out here
27:28 in her dress meets up with her other
27:30 roommates right here
27:33 I believe the angle was kind of like
27:34 that where you see them all there and I
27:37 just kind of noticed it even says even
27:39 has a sign there the El Cordova sign is
27:42 in the movie itself as shown right here
27:46 you just kind of see the bottom of it
27:54 tree over to the side is kind of in the
27:54 frame also
27:55 and when they're dancing in the road you
27:58 see this
28:00 this bicycle
28:02 emblem here
28:04 and they filmed it at at Sunset when the
28:06 sun was going down so the sun sets over
28:08 that direction and they filled it all at
28:10 Sunset the camera kind of pans up
28:12 they use a crane angle into the road
28:15 looking down if you look closely yeah
28:18 you can see the emblem there the painted
28:20 bicyclists on the side of the road here
28:29 still there so
28:29 obviously the sun is not setting yet
28:31 soon it will be
28:33 but you get that magic hour photo when
28:35 they were
28:36 right here and then around back
28:39 was the scene where Sebastian picks her
28:41 up in his car so we're going to walk
28:42 around the back alley and match up that
28:44 angle also and if you walk around the
28:46 block from her apartment right over here
28:50 this is a corner of third and
28:52 Gaviota
28:53 across from the Long Beach fire station
28:56 here on this corner this should take you
28:58 into the back alley where
29:00 Sebastian picks her up honks the horn
29:02 he's known for Hawking his horn very
29:04 dramatically and the roommate even asked
29:06 if that's going to happen every time Mia
29:08 said I think so
29:10 this is pretty much another example of
29:12 how
29:13 you think it might be two different
29:14 locations but in fact it's the same
29:16 location
29:27 the electrical boxes and everything
29:28 still look the same
29:30 now there's no trash cans here there's
29:32 just a dumpster right over here that has
29:34 City of Long Beach
29:36 on it as well she opens up the gate and
29:38 comes right out
29:39 that's pretty neat
29:41 and here's the angle here so you got the
29:44 four bay doors
29:46 they were even painted look at their
29:48 painted pink or maybe like when I
29:49 printed this out it comes in a different
29:51 Hue but you see the ground kind of
29:53 looking that way and then that's where
29:55 the car pulls out straight out now the
29:58 Interiors of sebs I went to the
30:00 exteriors a little bit earlier but the
30:02 Interiors are here below the Historic
30:04 Hotel broadland at a place called The
30:07 Blind Donkey not open at the moment
30:09 they're open later tonight which maybe
30:11 they're not even open later today they
30:12 may be close for the day either either
30:13 way the gate is closed
30:16 but I'm gonna take a look up close but
30:17 they end up walking down here so she
30:19 goes down this and she turns in that's
30:22 where she sees the sign that says sebs
30:23 and she realizes oh my goodness my
30:27 ex-boyfriend has fight has his dream has
30:30 come true this was the staircase where
30:32 they walked down take a right and go in
30:34 obviously this is this is locked so I
30:36 can't get in but yeah this is it a place
30:39 here it's called
30:41 the Blind Donkey so I don't even know it
30:43 may not even be open it looks like
30:44 someone has shattered this window here a
30:46 couple different moments in fact the
30:48 last moment of the movie when she turns
30:50 around and looks back at him and he kind
30:51 of gives the smile they both give a
30:53 little smile at each other and then also
30:55 the dream sequence when it's almost a
30:58 kind of like the what if happened that's
31:00 down in the basement of the Blind Donkey
31:02 right down there
31:04 the ending always gets me
31:07 really does
31:09 always a lot of what ifs in life the sun
31:11 is kind of about to start setting
31:14 pretty lengthy day of commuting all
31:16 around La still
31:21 good your blimp is getting a bird's eye
31:21 perspective up there of the lighthouse
31:24 here in Hermosa Beach
31:27 which is the Jazz Club
31:32 where they first went and
31:32 Mia got her first taste of jazz and this
31:35 is what it looked like in the film
31:37 it's also kind of neat that even in the
31:40 movie The Business next door the
31:41 Waterman's safe house for Surfers
31:43 restaurant and bar is featured in the
31:45 movie as well
31:47 and you can see there they both are
31:48 there's them over on this side and Ryan
31:51 over on this side
32:02 a Lighthouse Cafe
32:02 it's kind of a wide lens
32:06 where you can see everything in there in
32:07 fact you could even see the Waterman's
32:09 restaurant next door and all that too
32:15 very distinct building and when they
32:15 exit out it's kind of interesting
32:17 because you notice in the scene they
32:19 both walk out of that door they both go
32:21 their separate ways and they want to
32:24 look back at each other but one of them
32:25 looks back and notices the other one's
32:28 not looking back so turns their head
32:30 and as soon as the other one turns their
32:32 head facing back that way the other one
32:34 looks back so they would just look back
32:36 at each other a moment sooner they
32:39 probably would have gone back and
32:40 embraced that's my thought anyway when
32:43 I've watched that scene
32:51 I'm not sure I guess you have to go
32:51 around the front of the building and see
32:52 if you can go in it might be open I
32:54 believe the Interiors were also filmed
32:55 inside of there
32:57 I really like this neon also the pier
33:00 the city of stars that he's singing and
33:02 all that the pier is just right over
33:03 there so he had another one this is like
33:05 the third occasion where really the
33:08 scene two different scenes are really
33:10 side by side and the continuity really
33:12 matches up which is kind of rare for a
33:14 lot of films
33:16 I mean a lot of things are spread out
33:17 but a lot of the scenes where they leave
33:18 one area
33:20 she walks that way he walks this way he
33:22 walks directly to the pier here's a
33:24 little mural here but take a look
33:26 there's even a jazz band playing up
33:28 there at the Lighthouse
33:30 there's the stage of the Lighthouse Cafe
33:31 there's Johnny Cash I think that's
33:33 supposed to be Johnny Cash right there
33:34 and there's a cat
33:37 all right stepping inside is pretty dang
33:39 awesome it looks identical as it did
33:42 again it's only been seven eight years
33:43 but still
33:45 looks exactly the same I can almost
33:47 picture the scene when he's trying to
33:49 explain Jazz to her how everyone's
33:51 working synonymously with each other but
33:54 everyone's yet everyone's doing the same
33:55 thing trying to stand out this is also
33:58 the area where John Legend came up and
34:00 offered him a job the character John
34:01 Legend plays as well and where me was
34:04 dancing over the corner
34:06 and Sebastian was us on stage playing
34:08 the piano is this was featured a few
34:10 different times and even some autographs
34:13 and things in here there's a bunch of
34:15 different autographs and signatures and
34:17 a poster and whatnot and it's located
34:20 right next to the beach
34:21 this looks like this looks really really
34:23 cool one thing I kind of knows too is
34:24 behind them when they're sitting at the
34:26 it looks as if the stained glass windows
34:29 were removed and replaced and part of
34:31 the stained glass window was turned into
34:33 like a mirror over in the corner but the
34:35 door still looks the same really
34:36 couldn't work out any better the Sun is
34:38 setting in the same spot
34:40 where Sebastian was up here singing city
34:43 of stars picks up the gentleman's hat
34:46 gives it back to him and dances with his
34:48 wife for a moment
34:53 I'll show this screen grab here in a
34:53 second
34:54 this is the pier the Hermosa Beach Pier
34:58 right along the water
35:00 all the Surfers out
35:02 and I just kind of realized it is
35:03 already
35:05 five o'clock been going since 9 A.M and
35:08 there are so many spots We're not gonna
35:10 get to all of them I'm just gonna cite
35:12 the obvious will not happen to get all
35:14 these done today
35:16 but you know just kind of wanted to
35:18 show quite a few of them very spread out
35:21 La the traffic as the day progressed
35:23 started to get pretty pretty nutty
35:36 anyway I think Pennywise the band not
35:36 that clown from Hermosa I think Black
35:39 Flag also were you out here or any of
35:41 your
35:42 relatives out here when they were
35:43 filming that scene yeah I just noticed
35:44 that too seagull at the lamp post there
35:47 are no real lamp posts it was all
35:49 set dressing the lamp there's no lamp
35:51 posts through here
35:53 seagull also noticed that but yeah the
35:55 lamp posts were placed all through here
35:57 they were not really
36:01 you take a look
36:03 you can see the cityscape off in the
36:05 distance
36:06 just like it looks in real life but all
36:08 those lamp posts were brought in
36:11 to make it look like they were lampposts
36:12 on the pier and they really weren't
36:14 it is 100 magic hour right now with the
36:17 sun glistening
36:18 over the shoreline and all those houses
36:20 up there this is a great area
36:23 those houses all got a pretty good view
36:24 of the water
36:30 pretty good
36:30 I was excited how the Lighthouse Cafe
36:31 still looks exactly the same
36:33 I get excited about the little things
36:35 I really like the movie a lot I really
36:37 do all right you ready to move on to the
36:38 next spot yeah we're already ready
36:42 we've been we've been traveling we've
36:44 been a lot covered a lot of miles today
36:45 already yeah a lot of miles you ready
36:48 ready for a couple more
36:51 101 miles out
36:53 are you good counting the miles I think
36:55 it's over 100 miles have you been like
36:57 adding them up
37:02 all right let's get this for posterity
37:02 now the thing we've got a lot of miles
37:04 you didn't know what you were in for
37:06 you're like oh I'll go to some La La
37:08 Land spots I love that movie and then
37:10 you're like do we have to go to all this
37:15 all right let's do this
37:15 let's get it
37:23 all right we got it nailed it now I've
37:23 continued over to West Adams in Los
37:26 Angeles
37:27 this is where she performed the play
37:31 so long Boulder City
37:34 and it looks like it was at one point
37:36 was an active theater but
37:40 at this moment
37:41 it's all boarded up
37:43 in fact you really can't match too much
37:46 up
37:47 okay you can
37:49 also here's the door she comes out of
37:52 here so this is the stage door here's
37:54 the address too 5253 West Adams but this
37:58 is when she comes out really a kind of a
38:00 sad scene this is when she decides to go
38:02 home
38:04 and he runs a little late because he was
38:07 under contract to do a photo shoot with
38:09 the band he was in but he wanted to see
38:11 the one-woman play that she had written
38:13 and performed or wasn't able to and this
38:16 was used a couple times once early when
38:18 she went to rent the place and then
38:20 later in the nighttime scene
38:23 when he ends up pulling up
38:25 he ended up making didn't make it to the
38:27 play but he ended up showing up as she
38:30 was just finishing up the turnout was a
38:32 really poor turnout it was just
38:34 basically her three roommates and
38:37 Sebastian's sister and like one or two
38:40 other people but this is kind of good
38:42 even though this is all boarded up this
38:44 right here was the window that Sebastian
38:48 knocked at can you hold the camera here
38:49 I'm going to reenact being Sebastian
38:52 yeah be careful the broken glass but
38:55 basically
38:57 here is
38:59 I'm gonna try to show where the here he
39:02 is so can you see this here
39:05 yeah does it show up pretty good yeah it
39:06 shows up really well so
39:09 here he is knocking on the window and
39:11 that's the same window with the same
39:12 frame and everything so basically it
39:15 kind of goes through here I don't want
39:17 to hit that
39:18 too hard to probably cut my hand yeah
39:21 they've done reaches through here and
39:23 knocks on the glass without any trouble
39:25 with that broken glass because I would
39:26 probably cut my hands yeah sorry if it's
39:28 shaky it's cold outside yeah
39:31 he was trying to get her attention
39:32 trying to get Mia's attention inside
39:34 there and then turns this way and she
39:36 comes walking out she was parked right
39:39 and very very dramatic very kind of a
39:41 one of the Turning Point the sad scene
39:43 really in the movie one of the sad
39:45 scenes of the movie at that point
39:48 you see anything up there
39:53 I think the place has gutted out
39:53 through there and it kind of looks like
39:55 that it is oh yeah maybe it is
39:58 completely gutted out
40:00 I kind of wonder what if they did the
40:01 Interiors in here the Interiors might
40:03 have been in here
40:05 maybe yeah you're basically standing
40:08 where she is
40:09 kind of off to the side there but she
40:12 closes the door and then he's like I'm
40:14 so sorry I'm so sorry that she comes
40:16 over here to the car she's like right
40:18 here his car is over here her car's here
40:21 she says I already I didn't even make
40:23 enough money to pay back the theater
40:24 she's kind of crying
40:26 says I'm going home she says you know he
40:28 thinks talk about the home that they
40:30 have but really talk about going home to
40:31 her parents house to Boulder City and I
40:34 kind of noticed too you know notice how
40:36 a lot of there's a lot of one takes in
40:38 the movie like long takes
40:40 so you're basically say standing where
40:42 Sebastian was she's over here she gets
40:45 this she goes no I'm going home and I'm
40:46 going I'm really going home and then she
40:49 I noticed like if you watch that scene
40:51 it's it's just one long like two minute
40:53 take but when she comes around the park
40:55 and gets in here and she's sitting here
40:57 she can't find her keys for like about
41:00 three second pause and then he's
41:03 standing over there it's really not even
41:05 that noticeable probably no one else has
41:07 probably noticed that there's that one
41:08 second pause
41:10 that he does when Sebastian's standing
41:12 right here and the car won't start you
41:14 know as an actor he can't break the
41:16 scene but she finally drives off and
41:18 he's like oh wait wait and then he kind
41:20 of like leans down oh man and there's
41:23 that one little second and I kind of
41:24 Wonder the director wanted to put a head
41:26 in there but he didn't want to do that
41:27 he's one of those long takes I don't
41:29 know it kind of makes it more realistic
41:31 because you're like thinking you're like
41:33 what do I do she's like don't believe
41:34 that it starts to be like oh wait no
41:36 wait and then he's just left there all
41:38 by his Lonesome his car
41:40 right over on this side so here's the
41:42 kind of the angle there so that's this
41:44 is the night time
41:46 view of the theater in the movie like I
41:49 said you can see that side I don't know
41:51 I just I really feel something when I
41:53 see this this little area here
41:55 I've watched the movie many many times
41:59 and this is one scene that really kind
42:00 of is you know noticeable when she walks
42:03 out of here it's a pivotal moment
42:07 and where her house was is way up by Six
42:09 Flags we're not going to go to it but
42:11 her flat her house
42:13 and the movie was not really in Boulder
42:15 City it was like I think it was like up
42:16 in Santa Claus Santa Clarita or in that
42:19 area I'll show you the kind of the
42:20 screen capture well not her house her
42:21 parents house and then when he ends up
42:22 finding out where Sheila because it was
42:24 across from the library
42:25 that's where well the light just turned
42:27 on up here look at this light is turned
42:28 on well that's the address there and
42:31 we're not going to go up to it because
42:31 we've we're definitely burning daylight
42:34 up the light is turned off oh it's like
42:36 a little
42:37 it's a little
42:39 security camera all right moving on to
42:42 the next spot Warner Brothers and then
42:43 we're going to have a nice delicious
42:44 meal
42:45 to end the day
42:48 at The Smokehouse which is the Interiors
42:49 where he played piano and got fired so
42:52 we got two more spots it is now 7 30 p.m
42:55 quite the day of driving around L.A
42:57 there were still a few more three or
42:59 four more spots that weren't really key
43:00 spots I kind of wanted to hit but I
43:03 guess the grand scheme of things not
43:04 not super important but we're gonna go
43:06 inside the SmokeHouse momentarily for
43:09 now I'm gonna walk over here to Warner
43:11 Brothers and talk about how yesterday I
43:13 did the deluxe tour and I just took a
43:16 couple photos I couldn't get to all the
43:17 La La Land spots at Warner Brothers you
43:19 see the WB off in the distance but I did
43:21 get a couple
43:23 couple spots in there that I wanted to
43:25 show I was able to see this this has
43:26 been repainted this is when she's
43:28 walking into the coffee shop she was a
43:29 barista
43:30 and this this coffee shop over to the
43:32 left here and it was painted this color
43:35 has been repainted since then
43:38 actually they did some Interiors as well
43:40 looking out
43:42 and this right here is they say are the
43:44 movies from Casablanca but I asked the
43:46 guide and he was saying that's not true
43:48 he said these really are not these were
43:50 not used screen used in Casablanca but
43:52 they stated so in la la land so
43:54 fictionally I guess they might be and
43:57 one more
43:58 looking at the Batman city hall there in
44:01 the distance there's no problem they're
44:02 walking out of the coffee shop she
44:03 worked out on the back lot
44:05 and that's what it looks like modern day
44:08 you see it's painted a little bit
44:09 differently but they did fill the
44:11 Interiors in there
44:16 number of times in the movie and then
44:16 this is when they walk out and you can
44:17 kind of see the Batman
44:19 who's in the original Batman burnt Ward
44:20 series you see that in the distances
44:23 him and Ryan walk out of there and do
44:25 their scene and those are the windows
44:27 that were said we used in Casablanca
44:28 what they look like now pretty similar
44:30 and repainted and touched up a little
44:32 bit and this is when she was like all
44:34 happy walking along the side
44:35 as well they're pretty cool that was
44:37 over at Warner right across and now for
44:39 the Interiors
44:41 of what we showed over earlier next to
44:44 the mural over on kohanga and Hollywood
44:47 Boulevard
44:52 getting confused it was over off
44:52 Hollywood Boulevard which is walking
44:54 into liptons
44:56 it's really The Smokehouse the Interiors
44:57 of The Smokehouse
45:00 and daf is good at a table so we can go
45:02 in and eat
45:03 while I was doing a little narration
45:05 over at Warner's getting it's cold out
45:07 here too it's kind of kind of chilly
45:08 but gonna head in the SmokeHouse really
45:10 cool place I've eaten here a number of
45:12 times and I always think of La La Land
45:14 when I'm in here where he had the piano
45:15 in the middle of the in the middle of
45:17 the room but he was getting the
45:19 you know playing the songs the boss
45:21 wanted to play Christmas songs the cool
45:22 thing is they put us in there's three
45:24 different rooms here they put us in the
45:27 room where the piano scene is just over
45:29 our shoulders a lot of people in here so
45:31 it's going to be kind of hard to match
45:32 everything up but basically she walked
45:35 in the door over there and the piano was
45:39 set up and you can see even the boots
45:41 are the same in here the same tables but
45:44 the booths would have this very unique
45:45 like red leather boots those are still
45:48 in here as well of course they had
45:49 Christmas decorations because it was
45:51 Christmas time in fact when the boss was
45:53 gonna fire him he goes it's Christmas
45:55 time it's Christmas he goes yeah I see
45:58 the decorations if you're going to do la
45:59 la land meal you might as well do it at
46:01 The Smokehouse
46:02 I can't think of any probably better
46:04 other restaurant really that's featured
46:05 in the movie well I guess there would be
46:08 the place that she like walks out of her
46:09 date but that I don't know you wouldn't
46:12 want to eat there you want to have where
46:13 they had the they had the memory of him
46:14 seeing him play the piano for the first
46:16 time so that kind of makes sense and
46:18 it's a little chilly out here
46:19 it's cold I'm really trying to picture
46:21 that it's warm
46:29 it's warm so we did La La Land we did
46:29 I'm gonna say we did
46:31 70 of the locations we did everything
46:33 that we could do in a day for sure like
46:36 we went all over traffic was a lot worse
46:38 than I thought it was going to be if
46:39 this had been on a Saturday or Sunday we
46:41 might have been able to do a couple more
46:42 spots but we got a lot yeah we did a lot
46:45 yeah the only part is that we can't get
46:47 to for sure you have to do like a three
46:49 mile hike oh yeah so I forgot to mention
46:51 the few spots that we could have
46:52 probably done if we hit traffic wasn't
46:53 so bad we did not go up to the area
46:56 where they did the famous dance scene
46:58 the one take dancing it's a poster and
47:01 the the poster cover was modeled after
47:04 the photo of them both doing the dance
47:06 yeah
47:07 yellow dress that is a like a three mile
47:15 wouldn't be able to show all the other
47:15 ones yeah one day we'll go up there one
47:17 day all right that's gonna do it the tap
47:19 dance
47:21 maybe I'll learn how to play the piano
47:23 perfect I'll bring I'll bring the shoes
47:27 are tapping now right all right I'll see
47:30 you in the next video the Vlog
47:32 silver
