0:02 welcome everyone adam the woo here as

0:05 19th
0:06 2022
0:08 do not be deceived
0:10 this is not what you think it might be
0:12 this gas station fuel stop convenience
0:15 store i thought they had strawberries
0:17 inside for sale but it is not a
0:18 strawberry stand the name of this
0:20 community
0:22 is strawberry and if just in case
0:24 you're curious down in there
0:27 there's the coffee i'm inviting you i'm
0:29 in south carolina to join me
0:32 i'm starting it
0:33 in the community of strawberry
0:36 hold on
0:38 pop this off
0:39 can i pop it off
0:41 there it is look in there
0:43 see
0:44 coffee
0:54 warm
0:54 join me
0:56 it's a long intro shall you this road
0:59 through this canopy of trees is pretty
1:01 incredible
1:02 look at this all right i ended up at
1:04 cypress gardens
1:07 a low country treasure
1:10 preferred
1:11 by group and family destination since
1:13 1932
1:16 and as you can see i feel like
1:18 the griswolds
1:20 first ones here
1:21 first ones here this is a lot different
1:24 than the cypress gardens that used to
1:26 exist in central florida that i am
1:27 familiar with that i went to many times
1:29 that has now been converted into another
1:31 theme park this is more of a nature
1:33 preserve
1:35 and i've never really done a full
1:36 property tour so that's what i'm going
1:37 to do today
1:39 i'm going to cover this these
1:40 are not real cypress trees
1:43 now when i went in the employee the lady
1:45 that i gave the 10 admission to
1:48 said that there were a number of films
1:50 here
1:51 a lot of movies have utilized cypress
1:54 gardens here in south carolina one of
1:56 them being a mel gibson movie called the
1:57 patriot
1:59 and there's a bridge here she said
2:01 there's also a couple of fake trees
2:04 and i'm just going to assume these are
2:05 the fake trees that they used
2:07 for set dressing
2:09 because this is not a real tree
2:13 general layout of the land
2:16 shows all the property here can also
2:19 rent a boat for an additional well i
2:21 think no she said the
2:22 boat was included with the ten dollar
2:24 admission they'll have to paddle it
2:26 around
2:28 and then they'd give a tour that's five
2:30 dollars but they only do it once or
2:32 twice a day okay here's a couple of the
2:34 boats
2:35 got some bigger ones here
2:37 and then there's another one over there
2:40 which has the name
2:42 petunia
2:44 i'm not making this up
2:46 are those
2:48 or is that
3:01 petunias
3:01 they get spelled a little differently
3:02 now i have been here before but it has
3:04 been a decade so maybe this will be a
3:07 once every 10-year tradition
3:10 just show up at cypress gardens in south
3:12 carolina
3:14 not a theme park there are
3:16 no attractions well there's attractions
3:19 there's a butterfly garden
3:21 and the bridge here
3:23 that was put in
3:25 a little hollywood movie magic
3:28 for that mel gibson movie which i always
3:30 i get braveheart vibes from it see the
3:33 patriot once or twice seen braveheart
3:36 probably 50 times 100 times
3:38 it's very similar in style obviously a
3:41 different time frame
3:43 different area
3:45 but it just it kind of you know you can
3:47 definitely tell it's the
3:48 same type of movie
3:51 as far as the other way it's filmed
3:52 because it's mel gibson
3:54 but this was put in
3:55 by hollywood
3:58 this bridge used in the movie this will
4:00 not be a filming location video
4:02 this is going to be a cypress gardens
4:04 video but i will
4:05 show a little bit of some of the stuff
4:07 that was
4:08 took place out here the backstory on
4:10 this place was the home of dean hall all
4:13 this property
4:14 and then later benjamin rufus ketridge
4:18 took over the place started planting
4:20 trees
4:22 no created a gardens in a lake of
4:24 cypress trees which had been a reservoir
4:26 to the flowing rice fields
4:28 in 1963 the gardens were donated to the
4:31 city
4:33 and now cypress cards i'm going to go
4:35 inside the butterfly house i'll have
4:37 about an hour
4:38 before noon which is when the tour
4:41 will begin and because the weather is
4:43 kind of cool and crisp and it's the slow
4:44 season i might have a boat to myself
4:48 just me and the vibe be it me and the
4:49 guide
4:51 there will be quite a vibe a much
4:52 different experience than epcot's flower
4:55 and garden festival
4:57 where you are basically elbow to elbow
5:00 with other guests
5:09 it's just me
5:09 and the worker the employee in here
5:12 right down here
5:19 oh that is so cool
5:20 hello there flat hello there on the
5:21 flower a butterfly
5:39 little butterfly
5:39 getting a little bit of nectar from the
5:40 flower
5:42 that is so freaking cool
5:45 okay didn't even notice these couple
5:46 gators here
6:00 one there
6:00 and
6:01 one over there arrested
6:03 big gators
6:04 they do have the crushed pennies in here
6:06 too the souvenir pennies
6:27 couple little turtles
6:27 the red bellied paku
6:30 sometimes referred to as the piranhas
6:34 cowardly cousin
6:36 because they are shy vegetarians found
6:39 in the amazon river
6:41 these are huge look at the size of these
6:46 that's so cute
6:49 why is a turtle swimming so fascinating
6:53 looking at your shadow
6:54 or looking at your reflection
6:57 a few birds i might say is a turkey
7:00 vulture a pelated woodpecker
7:04 also the red bellied
7:06 and then possibly not a bird but a river
7:09 otter
7:11 that'd be neat to see a river otter
7:17 noticing here on the back of the
7:17 property as i continue my way down the
7:19 walking path is a bottle tree
7:30 right over there in the clearing
7:30 you got the blue bottles going up the
7:33 side of that very tall bottle tree
7:36 the thing about an alligator or
7:37 crocodile
7:39 is they disguise themselves in the water
7:42 so see the murky greenness there
7:45 a gator could just be right there like a
7:48 quarter of an inch below the surface and
7:49 you would not even notice i'm now
7:51 returning up for my time slot for the
7:53 boat tour looks like there's a couple
7:54 other people
7:56 who've arrived now pictured here just
7:58 got a few more minutes before i get on
7:59 the boat but this is
8:02 the item that was destroyed in the
8:03 hurricane and here's a list of things
8:05 that were filmed here
8:06 so they do mention it right there i like
8:09 that
8:16 all right
8:16 you guys enjoy your ride thank you
8:29 if you do sandy gators now you decide to
8:29 pet them use the hand you don't want
8:30 okay
8:44 i'll say good afternoon it's almost
8:44 afternoon these are part of the extended
8:47 root system
8:48 for the bald cypress tree
8:50 the bald cypress tree is what grows out
8:53 here in the swamp and it needs a very
8:55 extensive root system to help hold it
8:58 upright in the soft swamp soil
9:00 so the root will go down in the ground
9:02 very far it will reach out about as far
9:04 as the tree is tall and then some of the
9:07 roots will return to the surface grow up
9:10 and all this is for
9:11 is to help hold on to the soil to help
9:14 hold these trees upright out here most
9:17 of them only protrude out the ground two
9:19 to three inches some of them grow a
9:21 little taller than that
9:23 yeah i always thought that they were
9:24 their own separate thing but they're
9:26 attached to the roots of the tree
9:27 they're actually part of the root yes
9:29 part of the root system
9:34 yeah they don't grow into little
9:34 saplings or trees or not bend in the
9:36 tree you'll see a slot
9:38 above that slot there is a hole about
9:40 three feet up you see all them bees
9:42 flying around up there that is a natural
9:45 honeybee nest
9:48 we did not put that there they just
9:49 moved in themselves about a year and a
9:51 half ago
9:52 we do not collect the honey from them or
9:55 anything like that
9:56 but uh they started in the hole i think
9:59 the honey's all the way down into the
10:01 slot now
10:02 there's a lot of them up there oh yeah
10:04 because the appearance of the water
10:07 the water is not actually black i'm
10:09 going to tell you about that
10:16 beings how this is fresh water any kind
10:16 of fish life out here that you would
10:18 find you would find in a freshwater
10:20 river we have everything from catfish
10:23 bass brim crappie bluegill sunfish
10:25 turtles eels
10:27 any such thing like that if you would
10:29 find it in a freshwater river you will
10:31 find it in this fall off every year as
10:34 you can see most of the trees are bare
10:35 right now
10:41 these needles fall off trees sink to the
10:41 bottom of the swamp they got a chemical
10:43 in them called tannin
10:44 cannon is an oil base
10:47 because they do have an oil base to them
10:50 they take a very long time to
10:52 deteriorate
10:54 laying on the bottom of the swamp you're
10:56 actually seeing a reflection off the
10:58 bottom
10:58 as well as a reflection off the top
11:01 now if y'all look to your right here i
11:03 can show you with my paddle the water is
11:05 actually a very light tan color
11:08 there you can see in the paddle there
11:10 yep
11:12 so you're actually seeing a reflection
11:14 and the swamp itself is two to six feet
11:17 deep
11:18 throughout the whole swamp right here
11:19 we're in
11:21 probably five foot of water
11:23 now the tupelo cypress tree has two main
11:26 differences one is it has leaves not
11:30 needles
11:31 the other is it has a smoother base to
11:34 it
11:36 you see the bald cypress tree sort of
11:38 has the knees grown into the base of the
11:40 tree how it's all
11:42 knead up around the edges yeah the
11:45 tupelo cypress is smoother how long have
11:48 you been not working out here
11:49 uh this is my fourth year as an employee
11:53 uh before that i was out here for
11:56 about six years before i retired as a
11:59 volunteer
12:05 so i got about 10 years in out here but
12:05 i've only been an employee for about
12:07 four years
12:08 okay i used to work iron in downtown
12:11 charleston
12:13 i'm an iron worker okay
12:15 did all kinds of steel work stairs
12:18 handrails
12:19 uh crawl under the buildings and replace
12:22 beams and stuff
12:24 so
12:26 do you talk about any of the movie
12:28 history out here yes
12:30 excellent
12:37 now if we do bump into a tree do not
12:37 worry about it we'll be just fine it
12:39 looks like the wind got hold of me there
12:41 a little bit
12:42 i asked that you do keep your hands in
12:44 the boat
12:46 do not push us off any trees
12:49 i don't reach out and touch the trees
12:51 and i got two pretty good reasons why i
12:53 asked you this
12:54 um spiders and snakes
13:05 it's an interesting place i love coming
13:05 out here paddling around i bet
13:08 it's a different adventure just about
13:10 every time you come out
13:13 see something new out here
13:22 florida to your boats was that's the air
13:22 boats in florida that's true
13:25 this tree right beside us here is tupelo
13:27 cypress
13:32 now the alligators if they want to leave
13:32 here on the left side all they got to do
13:34 is cross that walking trail
13:37 go through a small swamp section over
13:39 there they can be in the cooper river
13:42 from the cooper river they can go up
13:43 into the francis marion national forest
13:46 or they can go downtown charleston
13:52 occasionally they do go downtown
13:55 and uh if alligator does go out there to
13:58 the folly beach dollar palm sullivan's
14:00 island something like that
14:02 um it will make the local news
14:05 because the alligator made it out to
14:07 salt water
14:09 are we going under this bridge yes
14:11 would you like to go under this bridge
14:14 this is what we call our duck bridge
14:16 this bridge has nothing to do with them
14:20 here we go
14:26 oh my god under our face oh wow bridge
14:27 oh my gosh
14:29 okay you are clear
14:32 and me
14:33 there we go
14:35 nobody looked up seen all them spiders
14:38 oh i didn't even notice
14:45 off to our left is the
14:45 wedding doc
14:47 if a bride chooses to get married out
14:50 uh we'll bring her out here in a single
14:52 boat
14:54 boat fits into the v of that dock the
14:56 bride will get out walk across the dock
14:58 continue walking to the right across
15:00 usually perform
15:02 now all this is for
15:04 is to make a grand entrance for a
15:06 beautiful bride
15:09 and that it does that metal ring that is
15:11 around the post helps keep predators out
15:14 of the duck box
15:16 when they have eggs in there
15:18 a predator that might try and get up in
15:20 there and steal and eat them duck eggs
15:22 would be like a raccoon
15:24 a river otter even a snake would try and
15:27 get up there what keeps cypress gardens
15:30 from drying up is we do have pumps in
15:32 the freshwater river to pump water
15:36 into the swamp to maintain a certain
15:39 water level out here so we can come out
15:41 here and enjoy the swamp
16:03 so you just pushing that right off the
16:03 ground yes the ground is just only a few
16:06 feet down yep it's probably easier than
16:08 paddling isn't it sometimes yes it is
16:12 yep just touch the bottom
16:27 these docks that you'll see down through
16:27 here uh they're just for
16:29 for us mainly for halloween we do
16:31 halloween in the swamp and we'll set up
16:33 different uh nice props up on them uh
16:36 occasionally we'll do something with
16:38 christmas also put a christmas tree or
16:40 christmas scene up
16:42 something like this
16:47 let's talk a little bit of history as we
16:47 go down through here this swamp was not
16:49 always as swamp as you see it today
16:52 back in the early 1700s
16:55 this was a low-lying swampy area
16:59 in other words when it would rain out
17:02 the water would run into this area and
17:04 it'd be a little flooded area swampy
17:06 area uh the trees are native to this
17:09 area and he actually had it hand dug
17:12 into a water reservoir for his rice
17:15 fields
17:16 so this is actually a man-made swamp
17:19 this is actually hand dug out in the
17:22 early 1700s
17:24 he also had to hand dig a trench over to
17:27 the freshwater river to get water into
17:29 the water reservoir in the early 1900s
17:33 benjamin catrich bought this property
17:36 now benjamin cattridge
17:38 unlike the previous two owners
17:42 he didn't want to
17:43 want this property for the rice fields
17:45 he was a very wealthy businessman
17:49 and he wanted this property for him and
17:51 his wife to duck hunt he closed off the
17:53 incoming water he closed off the
17:55 outgoing water he made this a stagnant
17:58 swamp by 1932 just a few short years
18:01 later
18:02 benjamin cattridge opened cypress
18:05 gardens to the public
18:07 so cypress gardens has been open since
18:09 1932 standing that it does stay open to
18:13 the public according to his father's
18:15 wishes
18:16 city of charleston took over this
18:18 property and they ran it for quite a few
18:20 years
18:22 now this property is not in
18:24 charleston city it's not in charleston
18:27 county it's actually located in berkeley
18:30 county
18:31 it's uh it was hard to get to at the
18:33 time in the early 1900s we didn't have
18:36 the highway system and bridges and so
18:38 forth that we have today they weren't
18:41 making a very good profit off of it
18:44 in 1996
18:46 they got together with berkeley county
18:48 because this property is in berkeley
18:50 county and they said do you want to buy
18:53 and of course berkeley county said yes
18:55 so berkeley county boat property of
18:57 1996. piece of bladder work to show
19:00 y'all
19:02 this is the viney looking plant i was
19:04 telling you about the flutes out there
19:07 um it's got little sacks on it all in
19:09 little sides where it gets its name
19:11 bladderwork because them little bladders
19:13 and then little bladders lay flat in the
19:15 water and when an insect lands on it
19:17 they will wrap itself around it and
19:19 consume it
19:21 so it's called bladderwork
19:32 it's all over out here
19:32 of course that was filmed out here they
19:34 had to bring in all them ducks and swans
19:37 that you see in the movie
19:39 um
19:44 they are not native to this area so they
19:44 had to bring them in they made the movie
19:46 and then they had to get them back out
19:47 of the swamp again so they wouldn't
19:49 become gator dinner
19:52 so they did have to catch all them birds
19:54 and remove them
19:57 another one is uh the patriot with mel
19:59 gibson
20:00 uh
20:01 he was on that first island that we
20:03 called park
20:05 that we come by in the very beginning i
20:08 was talking about the knees
20:10 yeah um that island is where mel gibson
20:13 was with the spanish mission
20:15 spanish mission is no more it was just a
20:18 movie prop
20:19 it was merely stucco plywood let's see
20:22 they had the yearling
20:24 the swamp thing
20:26 north and south
20:44 beautiful they walk along the edge like
20:44 that looking for food
20:46 frogs fish anything like that
20:50 and a nest can go up to 100 alligators
20:52 now not all of them survive but
20:56 i think we're gonna have a good crop
20:57 this year out here spring times when
20:59 they start moving around that's when
21:01 they get out of hibernation they're
21:03 hungry
21:04 um they're also looking for a mate
21:06 partner
21:11 over there you can see the bridge that's
21:12 from the patriot
21:13 that's where mel gibson stopped who was
21:16 general cornwallis's wagon
21:19 confiscated dogs in the furniture if
21:21 you've seen that movie
21:28 now i told you this swamp is two to six
21:28 feet deep and it is
21:31 but in the movie the patriot
21:33 they were actually walking across the
21:35 swamp yeah and riding their horses
21:38 across the swamp
21:40 here's some movie magic for you
21:43 they actually put in a stone road
21:46 uh from this uh where the folks are
21:48 standing over there on the eye on the
21:50 peninsula yeah right over there by the
21:52 swing set uh if you look straight ahead
21:55 of us here i'll turn the boat just a
21:57 little there's two white columns there
21:59 on the island
22:00 they knew at the time they put in the
22:02 stone road that it does not harm the
22:04 swamp in any way shape or form they
22:06 actually left the road there
22:09 we can control the water level in here
22:12 somewhat
22:14 and we can let a little bit of water out
22:17 and walk across there again today
22:21 right now the water level that we have
22:23 it's probably about a foot deep across
22:26 there if you can actually look over the
22:28 boat once we get down there if you look
22:30 over the edge of the boat and try to
22:32 look through the blackness you'll be
22:34 able to see the stones on the bottom
22:37 right here
22:46 that's the stones
22:46 the stone road the whole way across
22:48 there today it's mainly used for a fish
22:50 hatchery
22:51 and the ospreys know it they'll come up
22:53 here and sit in one of these three trees
22:55 and they'll watch that stone road when a
22:58 fish goes across it they dive out that
23:00 tree catch them a fish and fly off
23:11 now did y'all get to go to the aquarium
23:11 back there swamp area yeah yeah there is
23:13 a swamp area and we do have the uh
23:15 butterfly house are open year-round
23:19 thank you very much yeah thank you
23:21 enjoyed the ride even though we didn't
23:23 see any alligators today
23:39 another person who was instrumental in
23:39 preserving the unique and natural beauty
23:41 of the gardens
23:42 was c norwood hasty jr
23:47 63-83 only 20 years old
23:53 mr hasey was considered a leading
23:53 horticulturist in the low county he was
23:56 also saying you could rent out the
23:57 facilities like these gazebos here they
24:00 provide tables and chairs
24:03 just have to get a hold of cypress
24:04 gardens themselves and
24:06 inquire
24:07 if you want to have an event of any sort
24:26 notice there's also a wooden dock out
24:51 wow
24:51 no railings
25:06 do not take a long walk off this short
25:06 pier
25:09 even if someone tells you to
25:21 a tribute to the admiration
25:21 the kittridge family had for the rich
25:23 and bountiful low country landscape
25:34 which is why this place exists
25:37 and here on the very property
25:41 is this
25:47 this is something else
26:22 the ground was consecrated may 16th of
26:22 1935
26:47 1900 to 1981
26:47 and his wife
26:48 corolla
27:09 there was a forest he created the beauty
27:09 of the surrounding cypress gardens
27:16 the wife
27:16 of benjamin rufus elizabeth maynard
27:18 marshall
27:22 i learned from the boat guide
27:25 that happy
27:27 was the name of the family dog
27:30 happy is here as well
27:39 this is a little bit of walk from the
27:39 front but worth checking out
27:42 for sure
28:00 may good fortune and every blessing
28:00 attend all those in the future
28:02 take reverent care of this
28:04 consecrated ground
28:07 benjamin's quote there
28:15 this one acre of ground in the property
28:15 of strawberry chapel see strawberry
28:27 notice the two double trees here
28:27 they kind of fork up
28:29 with the boat going by
28:31 but it's right here was right on the
28:32 side of that island next to those two
28:34 double trees right here pretty close to
28:36 where the boats load and there's those
28:38 two trees right over there to the right
28:40 side kind of forking up
28:42 so it was right here it only lasted
28:43 three years after there's some photos
28:45 online obviously the one i found
28:48 but it was right here which makes sense
28:50 because
28:51 the road that they were talking about
28:52 that goes underneath the
28:54 the water over there is on the same
28:56 island so it would have been right here
28:58 there's really nothing left
29:12 yep completely gone all right i'm gonna
29:12 start wrapping it up but first gonna
29:13 head into the gift shop i'm not gonna
29:15 exit through the gift shop
29:17 but i'm gonna go in the gift shop
29:18 because you can't exit without going in
29:19 the gift shop but i'm gonna go in there
29:21 get a souvenir
29:23 got myself a
29:24 magnet also there is no affiliation with
29:28 the former
29:29 cypress gardens in florida
29:31 that became a theme park and then now
29:34 changed it to another establishment
29:35 there is no affiliation i was talking to
29:37 the employee in the gift shop
29:39 also i believe the birds are out now i
29:40 can hear them over there it's warmed up
29:42 a little bit so i think they got their
29:43 birds out
29:44 so i'll end with the birds
29:46 hello
29:52 gonna say
29:52 hi hello
30:10 what's that
