0:02 welcome everyone out of the woo here
0:02 here with my dad
0:04 day number two of our road trip our
0:07 nostalgic road trip if you will
0:09 going to several states across the u.s
0:12 where are we currently on day number two
0:15 nice niceville florida
0:17 moved here in 94
0:20 90 84.
0:24 80. 80 1984
0:28 through 88 89 five years yep
0:31 five years and lived in the home at the
0:34 end of this road
0:35 right there morning
0:41 a lot of memories here in fact for me
0:41 probably the most prominent i
0:43 was 10 years old through 14 or 15 years
0:46 old something like that
0:47 so for me it was a really the the
0:50 essence
0:51 of the fiber of my being of of growing
0:54 up
0:55 what do you recall mostly about about
0:57 this house if you really had to by the
0:59 way
0:59 i'm inviting you to join me and my dad
1:02 shall you give me give me some memories
1:05 oh my goodness
1:06 well let's see the um
1:10 what you see there is the
1:13 built-in carport area used to be
1:17 my office come out of the main house and
1:20 go into that office area step down into
1:23 the office area and then i remember
1:27 your mother and i had a water bed back
1:30 in those days that's right the water bed
1:31 the flood of the waterbed that
1:34 ultimately flooded once that's true
1:35 and you had to take the hose through the
1:38 back window
1:39 to fill the water bed up and you pull it
1:41 out and philly that's right and we had a
1:42 pool
1:43 that we also use that hose to fill up i
1:45 believe we have some photos of not only
1:46 the office that you were mentioning
1:48 but also the pool so there's the
1:51 backyard there so
1:53 there you are there's grandpa your dad
1:55 hi dad me
1:57 and the the paint has been repainted has
1:59 now been painted red as opposed to the
2:02 the white paint which all kind of chips
2:03 chopped off through the years yeah
2:05 let's see me at the pool back here
2:07 you're by the pool there you go
2:09 that's you bite in the backyard by the
2:13 you got your crazy humor from your
2:14 mother
2:17 i don't know about all i don't know
2:18 about that so yeah you can see the pool
2:20 here
2:21 and then i think in the front too
2:23 there's a photo of me on
2:25 my bicycle let me get that out
2:28 somewhere yeah i think it's back here
2:30 there you go
2:31 that's coming out like me in front of
2:33 the bike i didn't go down any slides
2:37 this was pre-sliding days but you rode
2:40 all over town on that thing
2:41 i did right is that the only bike i had
2:43 it might have been the only ones i
2:45 remember
2:45 for some reason in my mind i remember
2:47 having a bmx bike that's like a 10 speed
2:49 now that i think about it i did have a
2:51 couple of bicycles
2:53 one of them i recall i was cruising down
2:57 this sidewalk very quickly jumping curbs
3:01 getting a lot of action going in and i
3:04 turned this corner
3:05 and i had ripped my brakes off i had
3:08 decided
3:09 my friends and i thought it would be
3:11 pretty cool if we took our brakes off
3:13 and just stopped with our feet we'd
3:16 stick our foot
3:17 into the back of the wheel in between
3:20 the frame and the wheel sometimes it did
3:24 not
3:24 go well though because i turned this
3:26 corner and as i was going this way
3:29 just like this car is now going by
3:31 precisely
3:32 i got afraid didn't want to leap off the
3:35 the curb and turned abruptly
3:38 and smashed into this
3:42 to avoid the car i just remembered this
3:47 right here bam into this
3:50 see i knew i knew when we got to these
3:52 spots or it would all start
3:53 popping back into our into our heads you
3:56 had a car
3:58 i did have you had here in fact when you
4:00 hear the word
4:01 lemon it was actually it was
4:04 a yellow car and it was
4:07 a lemon this is
4:11 so when you look up lemon in the
4:13 dictionary for a car
4:14 there is this this is my sister this is
4:17 my mom
4:18 teaching her how to roller skate and
4:20 this car
4:21 was parked right over there on that
4:24 curb you want to tell the store a funny
4:26 story about this car i was playing
4:28 football down the street i was playing
4:29 football down this
4:31 down this very street with my friends at
4:33 the end of the road
4:35 and explain what happened from there i
4:36 got in the car to go over to the church
4:38 building
4:39 and i was forever running out of gas i
4:41 mean it was just my lifestyle back in
4:43 those days
4:45 running on fumes turned around went out
4:48 the road
4:49 to the stop sign you see the stop sign
4:51 turn left
4:52 and and if you turn left you go up a
4:54 little hill
4:55 a slight a pretty good-sized hill as i
4:58 started going up that hill
5:01 i started running out of gas you know
5:02 how your car goes
5:08 and i knew what it was so i
5:08 immediately made a u-turn and it ran out
5:12 of gas so i
5:12 coasted the engine stopped i put it in
5:15 neutral
5:16 and the car coasted and had enough speed
5:19 on it posted down the hill
5:21 enough or inertia for me to curve around
5:24 this curve
5:25 and coasted right back in front of that
5:29 and you you pulled up right here and i
5:32 could see you
5:34 forever so i was down there with you
5:36 know four or five of my friends tossing
5:38 the football around
5:39 which also i'm remembering we had this
5:42 brainstorm idea
5:43 to attempt to play tackle football in
5:45 this road
5:47 that lasted about an hour we decided
5:49 that's not a good idea let's go for
5:51 touch football
5:52 nonetheless getting sidetracked my
5:54 friends and i said oh there's my i think
5:56 i waved at you
5:57 from over there he said see you later
5:59 son got in your car
6:01 drove off and then you know maybe a play
6:04 or two later
6:05 got tackled in the road no car sound
6:08 no cars out all of a sudden i go that
6:11 car looks familiar
6:13 i mean there wasn't many cars that look
6:14 like that pulling through town
6:16 and there you come in idling in with no
6:19 very
6:20 silently at a crawl pulling in here
6:24 you get here you stop you get out remove
6:28 your briefcase out of the back seat
6:30 and walk back back inside
6:33 this very house this tree here was very
6:37 tiny
6:38 when we moved in this tree was
6:42 a seedling just a little tiny seedling
6:45 and there was a hedgerow there was a
6:47 hedge it's in that in front of the door
6:49 yeah do you see the photo of the bicycle
6:51 again let's see
6:53 there's the back there it is there you
6:55 go so there was a hedgerow we had this
6:57 brainstorm idea to cut this down or
7:01 maybe it was already cut
7:02 down cutting those hedges down took a
7:04 week
7:05 for one and we said you know what we
7:07 just quit the other three hedges look
7:08 perfectly fine
7:10 now the new residents have removed the
7:12 hedges and they've also added
7:14 a steel or an aluminum roof yeah
7:18 we had this shingled and members of the
7:20 church
7:21 showed up to help and not
7:24 thinking they you
7:27 myself our family all our friends did
7:30 not think
7:31 let's not scrape the shingles off the
7:34 roof
7:35 with the nails so there were nails
7:38 all over the yard for about a year
7:42 i stepped on nails i must have got 20
7:46 nails in my foot did i ever get a
7:47 tetanus shot i don't think we ever did
7:49 i survived the tetanus survive the nails
7:52 i remember that man
7:53 yeah do you remember we were in your
7:55 bedroom
7:56 which was the corner bedroom over here i
7:58 know exactly what you're going to say
8:00 and it was storming out
8:01 it was and i remember i walked over to
8:04 you can't see the window here but
8:05 there's a window on the other side of
8:06 the building
8:08 and all of a sudden lightning struck
8:10 somewhere close one of the trees over
8:12 there
8:12 that's one of the trees or maybe the
8:14 pole or maybe i thought it maybe even
8:15 hit the house
8:17 and just for that split second i just
8:20 wow
8:20 it was either you or i that fell over
8:22 the back of the bed that might have been
8:24 you that could be in my mind maybe i'm
8:25 over exaggerating but it was very
8:27 powerful
8:28 and the noise was amazing yeah
8:31 that's the closest i've ever been to
8:33 lightning that i remember a little side
8:35 note too
8:36 somewhere in this yard either here or
8:40 or down there or maybe over here i had
8:44 i had a great thought to
8:47 bury some return of the jedi star wars
8:50 figures and i was going to have what do
8:52 they call a time capsule
8:53 and later in life now we will talk about
8:56 a time capsule at the church
8:58 maybe i got the idea from that and i
9:00 buried somewhere in this yard
9:02 no hopefully no one comes out here with
9:03 a shovel and disturbs
9:06 the residents but somewhere over here is
9:08 one or two return of the jedi figures
9:11 that i buried did i make that up
9:14 or did it really happen i think it's in
9:16 the backyard i think we did that in the
9:18 backyard
9:19 we did it in the backyard
9:22 but i'm a little it has been it has been
9:24 let's see 1984
9:27 would have been 38 years 37 years
9:31 37 years
9:35 wow now this is it though
9:38 a lot of memories right here
9:46 all right wanna head over to the church
9:46 we'll show any more of these pictures
9:48 i think we got them all let's go through
9:49 them again there's the backyard
9:51 me and my dad and you and there's
9:54 there's
9:55 we should recreate the we should we'll
9:57 go to this
9:58 yes coast down and there another shot
10:01 there we go
10:02 right there your sister
10:10 your sister who's mother someone's
10:10 sister
10:12 that's right that's right there on that
10:13 little little side corner it is
10:15 and there you are playing the duck hunt
10:17 nes 1985 remember it well
10:20 1985 was the year that i discovered
10:22 nintendo entertainment system
10:24 i saw back to the future for the first
10:26 time and i tasted
10:27 mountain dew to my lips and my tongue
10:30 for the first time three of the greatest
10:31 moments happened in 1985.
10:34 look at that right there yeah duck hunt
10:36 duck hunt got a christmas and
10:38 1985 you wouldn't let your sister play
10:40 of course not that's
10:41 not what brother to do they don't let
10:42 their sisters play nintendo
10:44 it was my nintendo that was both of ours
10:46 i got pretty good at it too
10:49 there's the office inside the office
10:51 what what's this
10:54 car track yeah race track that is cool
10:57 that's right inside the wow talk about
11:00 ancient that's a typewriter
11:04 that belongs in a museum also have some
11:07 baseball memories really liked baseball
11:10 when i was that age in fact there was a
11:12 guy i knew over here
11:14 him and his dad would play baseball in
11:16 the yard instead of his dad like
11:18 pitching the baseball to him he had it
11:20 on a rope
11:21 it would swing the rope around and it
11:24 had the baseball
11:25 attached to the rope and then his son
11:28 would hit the baseball and it would go
11:30 the opposite way
11:31 i thought that was pretty ingenious but
11:34 speaking keeping up with the theming of
11:35 baseball over here
11:37 kind of like the sand lot in a lot of
11:38 ways where you know the characters from
11:40 the movie the sandlot would show up to
11:42 an empty field
11:43 to play baseball this was my sand lot
11:45 right down here
11:47 and i spent countless days
11:50 if you needed to call me for dinner or
11:52 mom needed to call me for dinner
11:54 odds are i was probably at the end of
11:57 this little area
11:58 right over here is that the house they
12:01 built on your baseball yard they did
12:03 right over there in the corner you see
12:05 the fence is a house that they built
12:08 and they ruined the baseball field for
12:11 the
12:12 for the locals
12:19 see construction crews are not concerned
12:19 with with uh with a with a few young
12:22 lads from the neighborhood wanting to
12:24 play baseball
12:25 progress waits waits for noah
12:29 and there was a fort that someone built
12:32 over here
12:33 around the corner there's like a tree
12:34 house i do kind of recall that as well
12:37 it wasn't it was very shoddily built it
12:39 was not the best
12:41 the best ever so we're going to take off
12:43 from here
12:44 drive up maybe recreate the
12:48 the running out of gas so i would have
12:49 been here saying
12:51 see you later dad have a good day at
12:52 work
12:54 a couple football plays later look back
12:58 your car still the lemon the lemon
13:01 stealthfully
13:02 you were probably thinking i bet i can
13:04 get back without anyone seeing me i'm
13:06 gonna try to recreate the running out of
13:08 gas
13:08 give me a play-by-play okay we came out
13:10 of hudson i i
13:11 came out of hubston circle in the lemon
13:14 turned left there was no
13:15 lot more traffic today than it was that
13:17 day okay so i start up this hill the
13:19 incline
13:20 looking at it on camera is a very tiny
13:28 steep enough to where you can turn
13:28 around exactly and about where
13:30 okay we're watching the black car go up
13:32 the hill
13:34 right about there is where it started
13:36 talking out and right about there
13:44 and posted from that point back down
13:44 very slowly very quietly
13:47 made enough of that like i said there
13:48 was enough inertia that i was able to
13:50 make the curve
13:52 and coast ever so gently
13:56 in front of the house the perfect life
13:58 where i had lived
13:59 let's try it you're all excited to go to
14:03 work with your briefcase
14:05 thinking to myself probably i'll get
14:07 some gas up the road here
14:15 so right about in here starts concunking
14:16 like it does when everyone starts
14:17 running out of gas
14:18 so you're like well i gotta turn around
14:19 gotta make a quick u-turn make a quick
14:21 u-turn here
14:21 yeah and this is where i made the u-turn
14:24 okay
14:25 turn the e-turn and just put it in
14:27 neutral now and coast on down let's see
14:29 what happens
14:44 we gonna make it well i might have been
14:44 a little further up the hill maybe maybe
14:46 just maybe you were up the hill to get a
14:47 little more
14:49 okay this gentleman coming down the hill
14:51 this gentleman's thinking
14:53 what is this guy doing okay i gotta turn
14:54 up this car coming by
14:58 you know what this might work
15:12 close
15:12 of course there was no truck here with a
15:14 trash dumpster that's
15:16 great
15:20 i gotta tell you it's funnier today that
15:22 it wasn't that it happened
15:40 i'm over there dad's home now just a
15:40 ways away about a block
15:42 from there is this convenience store
15:46 now called a tom thumb but it was a mom
15:48 and pop store
15:50 at the time i used to go in here did not
15:52 have any quarters to play the video
15:53 games but i would
15:55 go in and watch the preview screen of
15:57 altered beast
15:59 a video game out at that time and would
16:01 say one day i'm gonna play altered beast
16:04 and eventually i did they also had
16:05 commando in here they had two video
16:07 games
16:08 now i'm gonna go in here and get myself
16:09 a coffee got a little piping hot
16:12 caffeinated beverage from a memory
16:15 from back in the day inside this place
16:17 the video games were over there in the
16:18 corner now that i think about it
16:19 altar beast might not have been one that
16:21 may have came out a little bit later but
16:22 commando was definitely
16:24 one of them they were tucked away in
16:26 that back little corner over there
16:28 i just talked to a couple of employees
16:29 in there they didn't even realize there
16:31 used to be video games in the corner
16:32 they said
16:33 gosh i wish i wish there were still
16:34 video games in there but there aren't
16:36 but there's there's coffee though
16:38 okay moving on to the next spot there it
16:40 is
16:41 looking pretty much the same as it did
16:45 with the circular driveway you could
16:48 pull up
16:48 many times you pulled up right here you
16:51 know
16:52 yeah when it was during a weekday if you
16:54 had to go into your office
16:56 right pull up here go in through the
17:02 doors little small parking lot there out
17:05 front
17:18 anyone in there
17:18 so this was built recently because this
17:21 wasn't
17:22 this wasn't here this was here
17:34 this brings back some serious memories
17:34 when we
17:34 first moved here in 1984
17:38 the congregation was always changing
17:40 because
17:42 of the uh air force base and people were
17:44 coming and going that were members of
17:46 church from the air force but somebody
17:49 told us the story
17:51 that there was a time capsule buried
17:55 somewhere on the property
17:58 so one saturday there must have been 15
18:01 or 20 of us came out here with shovels
18:03 i remember that poles
18:07 because nobody knew where the time
18:10 capsule was buried
18:12 and the moral to the story or the
18:14 conclusion to the story is
18:16 the time capsule was never found still
18:18 buried it's still
18:19 here somewhere so there's possibly one
18:22 at the house of my star wars figures
18:24 and there's also a time capsule
18:27 here at the church as well but we dug
18:29 holes
18:30 all over this place
18:35 i don't even remember what we were using
18:35 as a guide post and how to where to dig
18:38 but
18:38 it was weird and they've also added
18:42 more parking over in this section
18:45 which i recall there was one event that
18:49 we
18:50 erected a volleyball
18:54 court over here and didn't work out too
18:56 well because there were so many
18:58 thorns in this section
19:01 that the volleyball court was
19:07 a little prickly when you were you were
19:07 getting on your skin your socks and tell
19:09 them about the
19:10 volleyball games the volleyball with the
19:12 thorns
19:13 and all that all the little prickly
19:15 things do you recall the hurricane
19:17 that we had an overnight stay in here
19:21 inside here me and a bunch of others
19:23 played
19:24 monopoly all night was it just one night
19:26 or was it a series of nights no it's
19:28 just one night just one night
19:30 and we ended up having all all the cars
19:33 that i wasn't old enough to drive then
19:35 but anyone who had a car we pulled them
19:37 all through here or they pulled them all
19:39 through here
19:40 or maybe over in here at some at some
19:42 area
19:44 and they they put them up side by side
19:46 by side within like
19:47 a couple centimeters from each other
19:49 inch from each other theoretically to
19:50 protect each other
19:51 so that way if the wind blows one away
19:53 it'll it'll
19:55 blow them all away i don't know if
19:57 scientifically that makes a lot of sense
19:59 so there was just dozens of cars
20:02 probably out in the road i don't know
20:04 maybe here i'm not even sure
20:05 but they were all wet i remember seeing
20:07 that thinking i've never seen anything
20:08 like that where they were all wedged
20:09 together
20:10 side by side by side by side by side
20:13 and the storm passed there wasn't a lot
20:15 of damage and i can see why we did that
20:17 because this is a very
20:18 sturdy cinder block foundation here
20:23 and your office was around the back
20:28 in fact the office door if you went
20:28 through the back section was back here
20:40 there is a door i don't remember using
20:40 it but
20:41 you would just go through the front but
20:43 this was your office what's interesting
20:45 is this
20:46 this section where my office and
20:50 the fellowship hall which is further
20:52 down the building part here
20:54 this was an add-on to the original
20:58 and there was a defect of some sort
21:03 in the building because anytime there
21:06 would be a heavy rain
21:10 you could hear the rain coming
21:17 between the walls of the future oh
21:17 really
21:19 nothing was ever done about it but
21:26 we do have one photograph inside from
21:26 a halloween well we'd refer to as
21:28 halloween it was called fall
21:30 festival and here's everyone dressed in
21:32 their outfits this was
21:34 the pulpit and the church pews and that
21:36 is inside in the sanctuary this very
21:38 building in the sanctuary
21:40 curtain in front of the baptistery there
21:42 oh there's me right there with the
21:43 cowboy hat
21:45 and i was preparing for 2020 right there
21:48 for the regulations of 2020
21:50 i got my facial covering on i'm i was
21:53 predicting the future there you go
21:54 from 1984 to 80 early 89
21:58 were you preaching here the whole time
21:59 or did you take any time off or was
22:01 all those years you were here i was here
22:03 the whole time yeah he also worked a
22:05 couple part-time jobs on top of the
22:06 full-time church
22:07 yeah the church was small enough or was
22:10 small you could pay me a quote-unquote
22:12 living
22:13 salary so i had to work another job yeah
22:15 most of that time
22:16 and that was bay lighting and support a
22:18 place called bay lighting which was a
22:20 electrical supply warehouse we should go
22:22 by there and see if it's still standing
22:23 that'd be cool yeah
22:25 anywhere else besides bay lineup uh
22:28 no that was that was it all right let's
22:30 go by check it out it was right over in
22:32 this area too i i learned a
22:34 valuable life lesson on humility
22:37 there were a couple people visiting from
22:39 the church and if i ever told you the
22:40 story
22:41 there are people visiting that were
22:42 about my age they were visitors from the
22:46 and one of them was fancied himself as a
22:48 bit of a sprinter and a runner if you
22:50 remember correctly i was
22:51 at that time was a lot more slender and
22:54 thin
22:54 and it could run pretty fast and all
22:57 everyone i knew in there said oh adam
23:00 adam could win a race
23:01 against this guy so i came out they were
23:04 in there it may have been like a
23:06 vacation bible school or something and
23:07 after that so i came out here and i was
23:10 walking all around thinking okay we're
23:12 going to start down at the other end and
23:14 run
23:14 past there this is going to be the
23:16 finish line i think i think it might
23:17 have been over there we were starting
23:19 and i knew i was going to win i was
23:21 confident i was going to win
23:24 and the moral of the story is i lost
23:27 all right speaking of working at bay
23:29 lighting
23:31 this building that you see behind me is
23:34 the warehouse that was
23:36 bay lighting back in the mid 80s
23:39 this is actually the rebuilt structure
23:43 somewhere during that period of time i
23:45 don't remember what year it was
23:47 the bay lighting building burned to the
23:49 ground it was a massive
23:51 fire and then when they cleared the
23:54 foundation off and rebuilt the structure
23:56 this is what they built
23:58 and then we the owner of the company
24:00 removed
24:01 the i mean moved the bay lighting
24:03 business back into the structure
24:05 yeah what did you do here you were in
24:07 sales here worked in the warehouse i was
24:09 working the way
24:09 driver and uh you know electricians
24:12 would come by their
24:14 electrical supplies and we sold
24:16 appliances and
24:17 lighting and stuff like that that was
24:20 one of the delivery guys
24:21 you were telling me a story as we pulled
24:23 in here about these rocks over here with
24:24 a hurricane
24:26 yeah one of the years a hurricane was on
24:27 this way and uh
24:29 our boss had us tape up the plate glass
24:32 windows which is kind of a traditional
24:33 thing people do when hurricanes are
24:35 coming tape up the windows
24:36 and i remember thinking to myself the
24:38 whole time we're taping up the windows
24:40 the hurricane is going to take all those
24:41 rocks and throw them right through those
24:43 plate glass windows so you didn't put
24:44 boards up it was just tape this
24:46 tape yeah that was just telling me that
24:47 when there was the fire there was some
24:50 obviously this is a different building
24:51 but the old building that was here there
24:53 was a second ledge also
24:55 and those that were in the offices up
24:56 top had to jump off
24:58 and one of the guys broke his leg
25:05 do you remember the pizza place that was
25:07 was this where they gave away the free
25:09 pizzas
25:10 that time was this where they
25:14 gave away the free pizzas from the pizza
25:16 place that time
25:18 i don't think this was the place there
25:20 was a place in town for some reason in
25:21 my in my head i was thinking it was
25:23 this bayou breeze place they gave away
25:25 when they opened free pizzas for like
25:27 the first couple days
25:28 they did for a week actually for a week
25:30 all you had to do was call them up and
25:31 then come get them
25:33 and we went up we called it in and women
25:35 up and you had to walk like a block
25:37 but it wasn't here no it wasn't here it
25:39 was back over
25:40 more into town in niceville
25:43 we're actually in valparaiso oh this is
25:45 technically valparaiso yeah
25:47 we've crossed over the the town line
25:50 right
25:50 we're now parked in front of where we're
25:52 at the bank in front of the post office
25:54 here at valport why did you choose a
25:56 valparaiso post office
25:57 over at niceville post office i don't
26:01 i mean it's pretty much it's more or
26:02 less the same same general area
26:05 only about a mile away right but i have
26:08 a recollection of
26:09 us in the basically in the in the bank
26:11 parking lot looking at this
26:13 and all the lights were off over here
26:16 and it was later in the evening and you
26:18 went in
26:19 and i was afraid for you that maybe i
26:22 had seen one too many scary movies
26:24 and you went in and there were no lights
26:26 on you said why aren't there any lights
26:28 on
26:28 and you went in that door and i was
26:32 in the car waiting for a couple moments
26:34 kind of terrified
26:35 and you came out with your mail and we
26:37 went on with the evening and everything
26:39 was fine
26:40 i don't remember that oh i do
26:43 it's amazing what you can recall what
26:44 you pop back into your head yes sure
26:46 because i'm seeing this and this is just
26:49 you know jarring back a memory
26:50 how about that in 1988
26:53 niceville high won the state
26:56 championship
26:58 in football and just kind of peering
27:01 over
27:02 this fence here you'll see the nhs
27:06 lettering in the foliage down there at
27:08 the end
27:10 on the grass hill we
27:13 sat there in 1988 and watched them win
27:16 the championship game
27:20 i recall it being very very cold it was
27:22 freezing cold out here
27:30 and the reason we had to sit on the
27:30 little grassy hill
27:31 is because there was no seats it was so
27:33 packed
27:35 and there were people sitting everywhere
27:37 all along the grass
27:39 all in the seats standing room only
27:44 everyone sitting all around here i
27:45 didn't remember what year was we had to
27:47 look it up
27:48 1988. that was a pretty big deal pretty
27:52 big deal
27:52 it was a big deal niceville high
27:56 state football champions for this small
27:59 town was a
28:01 that was their hoosiers moment driving
28:04 through the property of
28:05 rbcs rocky bayou or
28:08 went to school for quite a few years
28:10 this was the gym which was new at the
28:12 time
28:13 played many many a basketball game
28:16 back in there building 700 the gymnasium
28:20 the gymnasium room
28:22 yes yes this is the same shop since you
28:25 said the
28:26 guy that worked at the shop here worked
28:28 on your car yeah the yellow lemon the
28:30 lemon car
28:35 okay this is uh that playground on the
28:35 left over there
28:37 was not there all of this area right
28:39 here was full of trees
28:41 and there was enough room to pull the
28:43 little school vans that's what we call
28:45 buses
28:46 you were you were a bus driver i was a
28:48 bus driver for uh for the school
28:50 and they were just regular like 40
28:51 econoline style
28:53 you kind of like 14 passenger vans 12
28:56 passenger 14 passenger vans
28:58 and i was on your i was on your your bus
29:00 you were on my bus and some other things
29:02 i just went home with you afterwards
29:03 i think this building on the left was
29:05 one of the original buildings when you
29:06 were here
29:13 that's where the office was as well as
29:13 yeah i went to some classrooms there yep
29:16 that was where i went to i went from
29:19 fourth
29:20 fourth through eighth grade here i think
29:22 so i think
29:23 fifth grade sixth and seventh
29:26 was right inside that very building many
29:29 many hours
29:32 i was inside there wow
29:41 those were the days never to be repeated
29:41 again
29:43 wow that is so now they actually have
29:45 school buses
29:46 they got real buses no more small vans
29:50 now we're both a little hazy on the
29:52 details but dad seems to recall
29:54 this shopping center based on the the
29:57 incline of this hill and this turn
30:01 possibly the one one four zero sweet one
30:04 or the fantastic sams could be it
30:08 the video store we used to rent vhs from
30:10 and
30:11 this this little dip reminds me of what
30:13 it was like pulling up
30:14 so possibly one of these just need to
30:16 reiterate not confident that was the
30:19 video store
30:20 but we're just assuming it was based on
30:22 our on our
30:24 yeah the trajectory of coming down the
30:26 hill that's my memory
30:28 and the store was right in this area
30:30 right here something like this
30:31 and as much as i love movies this would
30:33 be kind of a pivotal moment for me
30:35 especially being able to rent
30:37 films there was no streaming back then
30:39 nope there was no
30:40 blu-rays no dvds all vhs and
30:44 you had to rent the vcr we had to rent
30:46 the equipment the vcr player itself
30:49 now if you had obviously anyone who had
30:51 a good abundance of money could buy a
30:53 vcr
30:54 we did not fall into that category so we
30:57 would rent
30:58 the vcr and they would there would be
31:00 instructions
31:01 on how to hook it up to your television
31:04 and you would go
31:04 in and there was almost like a a metal
31:07 tree
31:08 stand that they would put the vcrs
31:11 on that were in like a briefcase yeah
31:14 and they were inside
31:15 could have been the nail place could
31:17 have been fantastic sams or gnc or
31:19 possibly this one
31:20 but one of these was one of the first
31:22 video stores
31:23 i think so that i frequented and we
31:27 usually every friday night we would rent
31:29 the vcr
31:30 in like 10 movies something like that
31:32 and we would watch those throughout the
31:33 course of the whole weekend
31:35 and we and if my memory serves me
31:38 correctly and we know how well my memory
31:40 works
31:42 we also had to sign every time we rented
31:46 the equipment
31:47 you had to sign a guaranteed thing that
31:50 you're going to return the equipment in
31:52 the movies
31:58 did we ever return them we did but it's
31:58 too bad we're not here for very long
31:59 we're heading out of town here in a bit
32:01 if we were here till may 13th we could
32:03 go to the nhs
32:05 equator back club
32:09 oh what is that it's supposed to be
32:11 quarterback club
32:14 quarterback now in the shopping center
32:16 right up here was a
32:17 movie theater and we're on the subject
32:18 of movies been closed for a long time
32:21 but i saw a big top peewee
32:23 in 1988 inside oh is the door open to
32:26 the former theater and it appears as if
32:28 inside they're doing some construction
32:30 they have torn the screen out and the
32:32 snack bar area
32:34 and they're fixing it up for a future
32:36 development future
32:37 establishment not a movie theater down
32:39 here at the end
32:41 was where you would pick up the papers
32:43 you had a paper route for a while
32:45 i did the right guy at the rocky bayou
32:47 school and he was going to give that up
32:50 i asked maybe if i could take it over
32:52 and i did and he read me through the
32:54 route and
32:55 this was the place right up here where
32:57 we would pick up the papers you wanted
32:58 to go with me a couple of times
33:00 and you want me a couple of times maybe
33:03 like
33:04 10 times maybe more than that i started
33:07 off pretty strong for the first couple
33:09 weeks
33:10 and then you would wake me up at like 3
33:11 a.m and say you wanna do the paper app
33:13 with me and i go i want to sleep
33:14 wasn't it right in here where the papers
33:16 were dropped off i
33:17 don't really remember i was thinking it
33:19 was over at that bank but i could be
33:21 totally wrong
33:21 i remember this awning okay
33:25 nonetheless nonetheless you would pull
33:28 out of here
33:29 and go to that next block turn the first
33:31 round and take the first right and
33:33 that's where the paper route would start
33:35 and then we had to roll up the papers
33:38 and put them in bags put them in bags if
33:40 it was raining
33:42 or use the rubber bands and the sunday
33:44 paper was always
33:45 10 times thicker than the tuesday paper
33:49 tuesday paper was very very light so
33:51 you'd show up here early morning
33:53 so you did this as well as minister
33:57 as well as bay lighting so you did
33:59 something else other than bay lighting
34:00 i guess i do you think we should you
34:02 think you could remember the paper route
34:03 no
34:05 turn right here on mcewen drive
34:09 and we would go up okay is any any of
34:12 this ringing a bell
34:15 now where do we go from here dad where's
34:16 the paper wrap picture
34:18 picture you have the papers and i was
34:20 sit i would all
34:21 see i'm driving but you would be in the
34:22 driver's seat i'd be in the passenger
34:24 seat
34:24 your folding papers and we would toss
34:26 them on either side so you toss one
34:28 maybe there
34:28 we only had certain people that we
34:30 dropped them off to right it was only
34:32 yeah
34:33 it was only like every tenth house or
34:34 something like that probably
34:36 we turned right here i'm guessing take a
34:47 i can still like i'm having flashbacks
34:48 of the papers
34:49 hitting the sound hitting the driveways
34:52 yeah there was one time i threw a paper
34:57 and it got
34:58 it kind of dangled on one of the the
35:00 mailboxes i think i remember that and we
35:03 laughed the whole rest of the night
35:06 probably from sleep deprivation because
35:08 it was 2 a.m okay none of this looks
35:12 familiar
35:12 no i think that's the end of the paper
35:14 route at just about the halfway point
35:16 between niceville and pensacola
35:19 is this rest stop has one of the blue
35:21 angels
35:23 up here on this pole
35:29 still in route to pensacola i'll try
35:29 this
35:30 windshield wiper oh there it goes okay
35:49 so the way it works is you there we go
35:49 you also have like an impromptu car wash
35:52 that's pretty neat new yorker deli and
35:55 pizzeria what's the significance of this
35:57 dad
35:58 like in 1981 when your mom and i we
36:01 moved down here to
36:02 pennsylvania i started working for an
36:05 insurance agency called
36:07 a.l wildex and this was our office my
36:12 supervisor regional vice president
36:15 this is the office the house he used for
36:17 his office
36:18 this is where we met this we operated
36:20 business
36:22 so that's kind of the memory that i have
36:24 at this spot
36:25 here on cervantes right he's three
36:27 thousand one cervantes
36:30 um it's funny you still remember the
36:33 name of the road and the number of the
36:35 road all these years later
36:36 that neat how the mine works yeah well
36:38 it was on my business card for many
36:40 years
36:41 and now it's a deli they serve food in
36:43 there they do drove a few blocks over
36:45 well a mile or two over
36:47 to this park where back in the day there
36:50 was a concert an outdoor event
36:53 and this road that's in front of this
36:56 structure
36:58 this very short road is adam's street
37:02 i thought it would be well either my
37:04 parents or myself
37:05 thought it would be fun to get a photo
37:07 of me named adam
37:09 in front of the street sign
37:13 and we have a photo to document that
37:16 of myself in front of
37:20 adam's street and with that we've
37:22 actually found that same sign
37:24 right here at this corner
37:33 yeah there's the the tree limbs up there
37:33 in the distance
37:33 and the sign
37:37 this is side note this is an old
37:40 pay meter how about parking meter
37:45 as well and the sign in question
37:48 on the corner of zara
37:52 gosa street and there's adam street
37:56 in the historical district of pensacola
38:01 am i still as thin as i was back then
38:03 yeah but you're a little taller
38:05 i'm still a stem though right dad
38:11 yeah right that's cool let's put a
38:11 thinning filter
38:13 on this on this video there you go
38:15 that'll work
38:16 can you see the side in the frame
38:25 yeah i can now
38:25 30 years later how about 30 years am i
38:28 getting the math right
38:29 that's 40 40
38:32 years later yeah amazing
38:44 that's cool yeah
38:44 got an oversized transport up here oh
38:48 oh he's going around that tree left
38:49 missing the tree limbs
39:00 that's a mystery he's about to turn is
39:00 it going to turn we might get a view of
39:02 what we can get a reading on the side
39:04 yeah nope there's nothing on the side
39:14 look at this is that a septic tank it
39:14 might be
39:15 i don't know what that is one day we're
39:17 just in the house we heard this
39:18 it sounded like an airplane landing oh
39:20 it sounded like it was gonna land on our
39:21 house
39:23 but it never seemed to pass it just
39:25 stayed over our house
39:27 and uh then we went outside and it was a
39:30 blimp
39:31 made it over to forest glen drive
39:34 actually this is dated september of 1981
39:37 you have the pen there
39:39 and there's me and dad on the front
39:42 steps
39:43 which looks considerably different the
39:45 house has been repainted but those steps
39:47 are still there as well as the awning
39:50 and we have a number of photos of the
39:53 front of the front door and there was a
39:54 dog
39:56 on the front door a weenie dog we didn't
39:58 even have a weenie dog at that time
40:00 there's you in front there in the
40:02 driveway
40:03 yep
40:09 and this is also where my sister that's
40:10 where where where we were living when my
40:12 sister was born she was not born in the
40:14 house but was
40:15 brought back to the house and i had a
40:17 friend that lived directly across the
40:19 street and i went to stay with him when
40:20 you took mom
40:21 that's what we did to the hospital yep
40:24 what's the next photo
40:25 okay there we go more more of me in
40:28 front of those stairs
40:29 and there was a tree in the front yard
40:31 it's gone now
40:33 by the driveway there's our car and
40:35 there's that tree and you were standing
40:37 up against that tree
40:42 oh there i am as a pirate yep there's
40:42 the weenie dog
40:44 peeking same bricks wow how about that
40:52 let's walk a little closer and get kind
40:54 of get that angle
41:06 here's the driveway where your car was
41:06 this is also where my sister learned to
41:08 walk
41:10 she first learned to walk right here
41:12 next to the driveway there's mom
41:14 and my sister who are falling over
41:16 taking her some of some of her first
41:17 steps there's that tree i mentioned a
41:19 moment ago and there's the driveway
41:21 wow i kind of like the paint scheme
41:23 before
41:24 more this is in the backyard there i am
41:28 pulling her around in a little red wagon
41:30 my sister looks like he
41:31 yanking her down back she's going so
41:34 too fast in the backyard here okay this
41:38 is over at a park we'll go over there in
41:39 a moment and actually
41:40 that's the friend that i stayed at his
41:42 house across the way i went and stayed
41:43 with him when my sister was born
41:45 and we're gonna go by the park and show
41:46 that we did go by and notice that the
41:49 the big
41:49 wheel thing that we're in is gone now
41:55 and there's also we're gonna see if we
41:55 can find where the pool you find the
41:57 i think the pool might have been removed
41:59 but we'll drive by where the the pool
42:01 was as well
42:02 another pool holding my nose in the nine
42:05 foot
42:06 section it's starting to rain so we're
42:08 gonna get back in the car
42:09 i thought i was hot stuff you look
42:13 kind of you have like that look you have
42:15 that like look on your face like
42:17 that look you know he's got that look
42:20 you know it's got
42:20 you doing some kind of stunt flying or
42:22 something it does look so different
42:25 but those are the same stairs and you'll
42:27 see there's also was a
42:30 not a car port but a drive-in what do
42:33 they call it when you park your car a
42:34 garage
42:34 yeah and the garage it's now been
42:36 enclosed has been enclosed and
42:38 repurposed
42:39 sure that's an interesting roof
42:43 also it's like a tin roof on this too as
42:46 opposed to the shingles back in
42:48 september of 1981 i'm glad that you
42:50 wrote that on there with a pen
42:52 it gives us the wow 40
42:55 almost 40 years ago yeah a few months
42:58 shy of 40 years
42:59 pretty amazing all right let's go over
43:01 to the park where the pool was and over
43:03 to our second home
43:04 yep losing two spots there was this one
43:07 and another one
43:09 off of lee's way boulevard it was just
43:12 one block up
43:14 not far at all to the park now this
43:16 looks considerably different there was a
43:18 huge
43:18 wooden structure in the middle like a
43:21 two-story structure almost
43:23 like a wheel and there was the wheel
43:26 and i recall your mom my grandma
43:30 came to visit her and grandpa and we we
43:32 went by here came to the park
43:34 and it was there was so much here that's
43:36 been torn down
43:38 that her comment was how much does it
43:40 cost is it free
43:42 because she thought it was like it was
43:43 such an entertainment complex of sorts
43:46 that they were going to charge admission
43:49 looking at it now you would never think
43:51 that that comment would ever even be
43:52 made
43:53 because it's been just all the the old
43:55 stuff has been demolished
43:58 yeah looks a lot different than it did
44:00 back
44:01 1981-82
44:06 all right heading over to the second
44:06 house here in pensacola
44:09 oh by the way we couldn't find the pool
44:11 all right as i make
44:12 way up to leesway boulevard it will be
44:16 the home just off to the right
44:20 and my fondest well unfondest memory
44:24 was almost burning the property down
44:27 i had played with matches
44:34 i had played with matches and
44:34 burned down the greenhouse in the
44:39 as well as the half of the wooden fence
44:43 and you showed up and there were fire
44:46 trucks out front
44:47 and you had to park down the road
44:49 remember that i do i pulled up i was
44:51 coming up lee's way and i saw all these
44:52 fire trucks i thought wow
44:54 something's going on that got closer and
44:55 closer and closer and it's at my house
44:58 sure enough the backyard i melted
45:02 the greenhouse plastic covering of the
45:05 greenhouse and then
45:06 your dad my grandpa showed up later
45:09 probably around the same time he went to
45:10 that park
45:11 well they probably visited a couple of
45:13 times but he fixed
45:15 the back fence the portion of it
45:19 so what i'm curious about if we go
45:21 around to the back and see if we can
45:23 find where the fence that grandpa
45:27 replaced the fence that'd be neat to
45:28 find
45:29 one more thing about this house is that
45:32 i come home from work one day and your
45:34 mom says that
45:35 you weren't feeling well you are in your
45:39 and i go in the bedroom and there you
45:40 are white as a sheet
45:42 we took you to the doctor and the doctor
45:44 said you go over right now to the
45:45 emergency room and they had an
45:47 emergency appendectomy on you you had
45:51 your i think your appendix had burst
45:53 that wasn't quite that was i was that
45:55 was very painful
45:56 thankfully there is an apartment complex
45:59 so we're out looking at the backyard of
46:02 the fence
46:03 now my recollection was it was in the
46:06 far corner
46:08 of the yard so if we go this way the
46:10 greenhouse was in the far
46:12 corner yeah of the yard all the way at
46:14 the end so if we go
46:15 here yeah to where the other connection
46:19 and none of these look to be replaced
46:27 so here's the corner of the yard to be
46:27 in here
46:34 i'm not really seeing a distinct change
46:34 in color pattern though are you
46:37 it's hard to tell but too many years
46:41 weather worn
46:42 and my dad just did such a great job of
46:44 fixing it that's also a good point
46:46 he probably got the same exact boards
46:49 that were there and in my mind it was a
46:53 whole section
46:55 but in reality it could have just been
46:57 five or so
46:58 a couple couple different pieces let's
47:01 stop for a bite to eat at a place that
47:03 we used to frequent very often right
47:06 next to
47:07 well now it's next to richie's east
47:11 ho folks except i recall it being a
47:14 stand-alone
47:15 restaurant this is part of a strip mall
47:17 now i guess the stand alone
47:19 is now gone but kind of a win-in-roam
47:22 moment when you're in the florida
47:23 panhandle
47:24 gotta go with some po folks in fact
47:27 there's also one in
47:29 niceville and there might even be one in
47:31 panama city so the three places that we
47:33 lived at
47:34 panama city don't quote me on the panama
47:36 city
47:37 definitely one in niceville and one or
47:40 two
47:44 in pensacola never been in this
47:44 particular one though but definitely
47:46 enjoy
47:46 some poe folks always as a family this
47:50 was kind of a treat to go to pofos which
47:53 i believe is short for
47:54 poor folks it's a southern way of saying
47:58 poor folks po folks good old southern
48:01 cooking and relatively inexpensive
48:05 oh yeah that was a good call a tasty
48:07 meal and also
48:09 got some moon pies fun fact the first
48:11 place i ever ate a moon pie when i was
48:13 young
48:14 was at po folks this isn't the original
48:16 building this is not the original
48:18 building all this is new stuff
48:20 okay hang on one second go real slow
48:21 right here
48:23 this building immediately to my right
48:25 was the first
48:26 new building they built if they first
48:29 met in a house
48:31 and then they built this building and
48:33 then they tore the house down later
48:35 years later and built this huge
48:36 sanctuary worship center over here
48:39 and this would have been the original
48:41 parking lot from here
48:42 lots of pine trees yeah i remember a lot
48:45 of a lot of
48:46 pine trees and i do remember the house
48:49 that we met in yep
48:52 and you and i would do puppet shows we
48:54 did some puppet shows sure did
48:56 in that house yep and right over here
48:59 where
49:00 this warehouse now is was where all the
49:03 trees were
49:05 i was looking at some satellite images
49:07 and kind of turned the time back
49:10 and the house would have been right
49:12 about here
49:13 right in this precise and you slept in
49:15 that house
49:16 for quite some time i did uh there was a
49:19 time period for about a month or so
49:22 when your mom and you were still living
49:24 over panama city and i was
49:26 arranging getting a job over here in
49:28 pensacola and they let me sleep on the
49:31 nursery floor on an air mattress during
49:33 the week right here
49:34 where that and that part now it is right
49:36 there that's pretty cool
49:37 just picture this parking lot was all
49:41 all pine trees i say palm trees i meant
49:44 to say pine trees
49:45 grass and pine trees and
49:49 my sister at a very young age
49:52 stepped in an ant bed right in here and
49:54 was covered in
49:56 ants in the house but they think it was
49:58 a shed back there
49:59 there still is a shed up the same shed
50:01 but probably not the same
50:04 and the grass the grass caught on fire
50:08 it started burning in a guy had moved
50:10 down that he
50:11 knew from a previous church somewhere up
50:13 north had moved down here to live in
50:15 pensacola
50:17 and he had a extra car that he wasn't
50:20 using and it was parked out there and it
50:22 burned up
50:22 it burned the car the car up wow
50:27 now this was the first building they
50:28 built after the house the house would
50:30 have been over here
50:31 okay and then this was like a fellowship
50:34 hall and then in the back part of it was
50:36 some classrooms and stuff this is you
50:39 because that building is completely gone
50:41 now i think
50:42 if if it's not totally gone maybe it's
50:44 been incorporated into this new
50:46 campus conflict this must have been
50:48 around easter time i think so judging by
50:50 the easter easter basket so the house
50:51 would have been over to the left side
50:53 over on the left side here yeah
50:55 this is now a dead end but it used to be
50:58 burgess road you should go through
50:59 through yeah straight through there now
51:01 it's dead in they've turned make a turn
51:04 so all the palm trees are gone and the
51:06 road has been kind of cut off
51:09 they built some kind of a new through
51:11 way to cut the road off
51:14 there may be a burgess road on the other
51:15 side
51:53 that's close when you count count the
51:53 seconds between thunder and the
52:09 running into a little bit of a problem
52:09 now most the gas stations north of
52:13 are all out of fuel with the exception
52:15 of diesel
52:17 stopped by about three or four different
52:19 ones and all the nozzles
52:21 are bagged up i'm having flashbacks of
52:24 my winter trip
52:25 after a lot of searching 309 a gallon
52:29 found a little mom-and-pop shop
52:38 that had some fuel we actually looked it
52:38 up online and there is a gas
52:40 shortage across the entire panhandle
52:44 we got we got pretty lucky with this
52:51 self-pumping nozzle they fueled this
52:51 thing all the way up
52:53 man i got a little worried there for a
52:54 minute
52:59 went in the store and notice that on the
53:00 front page of the pensacola news journal
53:02 sorry out of service no gas thankfully
53:06 the place that
53:07 stopped off here on the side of the road
53:09 this little establishment
53:10 they did have fuel they said they just
53:12 got their truck in earlier
53:14 lucked out because it is definitely a
53:16 shortage in the panhandle right now
53:19 i guess i should have checked check the
53:20 paper before we left
53:22 just like that alabama state line
53:26 right over this hill drove a ways up the
53:29 road
53:30 to georgiana alabama the home of
53:34 hank williams painted there on the side
53:36 of that train
53:48 and the boyhood home
53:51 of hank williams
53:59 from age 7 to 11 1931
53:59 lilly williams moved
54:03 hirum h-i-r-a-m hiram
54:06 and his sister irene to this house
54:11 when he was eight his mother bought him
54:12 a guitar for three dollars and fifty
54:14 cents
54:16 practiced guitar under the roof
54:19 sang on the street for tips
54:22 and they moved to greenville in the fall
54:23 of 1934
54:26 and then in 1937 at age 14 that's when
54:30 he started referring to himself as hank
54:32 i never knew that i didn't
54:38 there's either a little puddle here it
54:38 rained quite a bit yeah
54:41 they are closed got here a little too
54:43 late in the afternoon oh look at this
54:59 i'm just gonna hook up the hank's
54:59 caboose over there it might
55:02 the museum opened june 5th of 1993.
55:07 let's get in the road here let's check
55:08 it out
55:35 now
55:35 that's kind of neat
55:48 and then it'll be gone this is the
55:51 downtown
55:52 starting with the post office speed
55:55 limit of 25
55:57 not a real beehive of activity
56:06 oh there sure is something you see a lot
56:10 of
56:10 in south hand alabama
56:40 that's gonna do it for today getting a
56:40 hotel right here off of the freeway
56:45 an eventful day a long day
56:54 the trip will continue in the next video
56:54 see the next video the vlog is over
