0:03 welcome everyone Adam Lew here as the
0:03 recording of this it is Monday
0:05 the 11th of September 2023 you see in
0:09 the reflection of my glasses the
0:11 Hollywood Hills ride over there
0:14 I am checking out of the hotel I've been
0:16 staying at for the last series of days
0:18 and going down to another one in a
0:21 different County
0:22 Orange County
0:23 to be more technical southbound about 30
0:26 miles down
0:28 freeway here
0:31 and on the way I'm going to be stopping
0:33 by a couple of spots
0:35 not really in a rush to get down there
0:38 there's the Hollywood Hills that you can
0:39 see in the Reflection from one hotel to
0:42 another one County to another but I am
0:45 still
0:46 in Southern California
0:48 for a little bit longer actually more
0:50 than a little bit longer for well for a
0:53 while longer
0:55 I'm inviting you
0:56 as always to join me
0:59 challenge I have now made the very short
1:02 commute
1:03 over to Griffith Park Drive gonna do
1:06 some Griffith Park stuff
1:09 a few things I want to showcase here
1:11 one just so happens to be a really good
1:13 spot that is free admission
1:16 I have a favorite little local spot of
1:18 mine when I used to live here I'd pop in
1:19 here on occasion
1:21 whenever I'd have guests in town people
1:23 visiting family and friends I'd bring
1:25 them here Travel Town
1:27 their hours are ten to five Monday
1:28 through Friday and also 10 to 5 on
1:30 weekends and holidays so pretty much ten
1:32 to five every day and the best thing
1:35 about this is there is no admission
1:37 whatsoever parking is free
1:40 admission is free
1:42 just show up and enjoy some some trains
1:46 and travel vehicles
2:04 you hear the freeway going by
2:06 and I also just heard a train so
2:08 evidently the miniature train the small
2:09 train is running that will probably have
2:12 an admission fee
2:14 but I might do that
2:20 it's a little placard over here on this
2:20 rock
2:28 dedicated to preserving for posterity
2:28 the various types of Transportation
2:29 equipment that help build the state and
2:32 the nation
2:34 perfect timing
3:04 since the last time I was here they've
3:04 added a new virtual tour called The
3:05 Whistle Stop tour look for the signs I
3:08 just scanned that
3:09 and it says that is also free you can
3:12 use it on my phone
3:14 and you know I believe this might be the
3:17 first time that I've been back to Travel
3:19 Town since I have visited San Francisco
3:22 I've been to San Francisco twice I've
3:25 been to Oakland a couple times as well
3:27 but San Francisco the city
3:30 twice and this might be the first time
3:33 that now I know what I'm looking at when
3:36 it comes to the car here
3:38 this is an old San Francisco
3:41 Trolley Street car
3:44 and I absolutely screwed that up it's a
3:47 cable car
3:49 it's a cable car
3:50 so many modes of transportation
3:52 sometimes I say the wrong thing a cable
3:54 car car one of the famed San Francisco
3:56 cable cars the first Cable Car operated
3:59 in 1873
4:01 this one is not that old but definitely
4:04 has seen
4:06 some years so
4:07 from the city of San Francisco and now
4:09 sitting here in Griffith Park
4:18 weather worn
4:18 I've beaten up a little bit
4:28 and if you don't have a smartphone which
4:28 most people do there's also little
4:30 placards here with the information as
4:31 well
4:33 so the artist Casey Macon
4:37 created the Casey Jones sculpture
4:44 create a lasting tribute to a very brave
4:45 and heroic figure from America's
4:46 railroad past
5:10 one hand was left on the air brake and
5:10 one hand was left on the whistle cord
5:21 that says the Melody Ranch special
5:21 right there on the front 1986.
5:24 that's either the locomotive number or
5:27 the date stamp
5:35 do not climb on top of you can go
5:35 through them they do have
5:37 they have these little stairways that
5:39 you can go inside of some of them but do
5:41 not climb on the top or onto the side or
5:44 underneath any of the trains or exhibit
5:46 they also have
5:47 facilities and a gift shop and
5:50 no smoking Southern Pacific number 30.
5:53 and it's nice here because you can walk
5:56 across
5:57 the railroad here
5:59 something you usually can't do and
6:01 shouldn't do
6:08 it's open railroads but here
6:08 you can you can walk along the tracks
6:10 here
6:17 number 3025 this thing is
6:18 really large
6:24 especially once you get up inside here
6:24 and just see the dimensions of it
6:39 it's ready to sit right here
6:39 to lean out the window
6:42 and get the view down the tracks
6:45 very convenient stairwells here
6:57 not a lot of people out here today
6:57 which was nice the weekends
6:59 I've been here before years ago on a
7:00 weekend and it was really busy
7:16 this floor is that creaking
7:16 I can't go past this point though
7:18 do not enter there go back down the
7:20 stairs
7:22 facing the property
7:25 Max penalty of 500 dollars
7:28 six months in jail 500 does not seem
7:31 extreme enough
7:33 for destroying something though it's
7:35 just I don't know my opinion
7:37 I guess you add in the other penalty
7:38 that might might be a deterrent
7:52 got the train sitting still here and
7:52 then you got one row of traffic going
7:55 through Griffith Park here
7:57 motorcycle and then you got the freeway
7:59 over there going at an even quicker pace
8:04 I like this big awning that they have
8:06 built here to
8:07 shield from the elements from the Sun
8:09 and the rain
8:10 and a shade here
8:17 I don't have the place to myself but
8:17 definitely plenty of Elbow Room
8:19 very relaxing Monday continuing the tour
8:22 there on my phone
8:24 the Whistle Stop tour
8:26 it says that this was delivered to
8:28 Travel Town in 1956 so you can get info
8:31 on when all of these were delivered and
8:36 used
8:37 so it was built in 1881
9:05 that's pretty fascinating
9:05 used to build the subway tunnel in LA
9:08 and also help rebuild San Francisco
9:12 after one of their big fires
9:46 all this history right off the freeway
9:46 most people probably pass by this and I
9:47 even realize it's tucked away in here
9:49 now according to their site this was
9:50 called The Little Nugget it was built in
9:52 1937 was a dining car and a who's who
9:57 of Hollywood royalty a mini a dinner on
10:02 here Bob Hope Cecil B Demille George
10:05 Burns among others
10:18 it's the oldest train here on site it
10:18 was built in 1864.
10:21 for Mariposa
10:22 it's like the Disneyland train right I
10:25 would imagine there's a pretty good
10:26 tie-in
10:27 with the style of this train and Walt
10:29 considering the studios were right
10:31 across the street
10:47 Park is just so awesome there's just so
10:47 much to do so many interesting little
10:49 let's say hidden gems but just gyms
10:51 nonetheless
11:24 oh is that a skunk above number 56 the
11:24 conductor the driver there
11:26 got a little hat on it's a skunk
11:32 oh I'm gonna scan this see what it says
11:32 the term you know the reason the
11:34 mascot's on the side there the painting
11:36 the term was used because these back in
11:39 the day would take passengers and cargo
11:42 from point A to point B and
11:45 the slogan was or the saying was that
11:47 you could smell them before you could
11:49 see them
11:50 hits the skunk
11:52 interesting I learned a lot from the
11:54 info they have on their site
11:56 I'm paraphrasing but yeah
12:10 the t2 signal
12:12 type of signal was created in 1912. for
12:16 fighting moving blades for daytime
12:18 identification and color lights for
12:19 night time
12:20 identification that's it right up there
12:31 be track smart
12:31 clear proceed
12:34 halfway down approach all the way down
12:36 stop miniature railroad track painted on
12:39 the ground down here and
12:41 here's another car here
12:44 take a look at this this is a little
12:45 more open
12:47 than the other one was as far as like
12:48 open air I should say okay this is a
12:51 train car a trolley car like a trolley
12:53 car
13:00 yeah
13:15 I think I'm gonna board the miniature
13:15 Shrine I think there's an emission price
13:16 for that
13:18 all right it was four dollars and they
13:20 gave me this card
13:22 and they said every tenth punch you get
13:24 a free ride so they'll have a little
13:26 indentation there
13:28 on the side of it 75 years it must be
13:31 the anniversary and over here got the
13:32 old ticket booths
13:39 I go all the way to the back
13:41 back row it's always the more thrilling
13:44 okay so that's how it is on coasters
13:46 this is gonna be the same no matter
13:47 where you sit
13:49 but I like to sit here because then you
13:51 can get those long turn bins
13:53 and turns the corner maybe I get some
13:55 good angles or not
14:09 I just said we're going to San Jose
14:09 California
15:57 trains trains everywhere well not
15:57 everywhere but here
18:22 there's the train horn I was thinking it
18:22 was gonna happen last time
18:30 completing the second
18:30 full circle score
18:59 little whistle here at the stop possibly
18:59 they usually do on all trains
19:02 and
19:07 no whistle at the end
19:10 Melody Ranch special
19:13 inside the exhibit hall now
19:16 you don't climb or touch the equipment
19:43 no travel towns not just trains you got
19:43 other vehicles modes of transportation
19:45 like classic cars
19:55 but mostly shrines now I knew there was
19:55 an episode of Columbo a video I did a
19:58 few years ago I showed that
20:00 I did not realize the bionic woman in
20:02 The Waltons were filmed out here
20:06 now I'm curious which episode of Andy
20:08 Griffith Show was used a travel town
20:13 that's pretty cool
20:15 and a bunch of other ones
20:19 but yeah classics
20:20 Bionic Woman Colombo Andy Griffith Show
20:23 that is awesome
20:25 covered all the Andy Griffith spots in
20:27 the first five seasons but when Don
20:28 Knotts left
20:30 I kind of stopped watching and never
20:32 covered any of those locations so I
20:34 would guess it was probably in the post
20:36 Don Knotts here for years
20:42 those weren't those weren't the best
20:42 years for The Andy Griffith Show
20:45 just my personal opinion they also have
20:47 some wagons this one used to be on
20:50 display it looks like it used to be at
20:51 Knott's Berry Farm but a piano box buggy
20:56 I could see that fitment in knots
21:07 delivery
21:09 vehicle over here California's favorite
21:11 dry food since 1905. the Golden State
21:14 number 26. it's a travel town
21:17 not been picked up from the side of the
21:18 road they were selling flowers so got
21:21 one of the street vendors
21:22 the side of the road bought some flowers
21:25 heading over
21:27 just up the way here
21:34 a couple blocks away about a half mile
21:34 away mile away
21:35 Drew up the side of the Hill farther
21:37 into Griffith Park
21:39 see the Disney Studios down there you
21:40 see the ABC Studios
21:48 and Forest Lawn I don't believe I've
21:48 ever seen anything like this a headstone
21:50 like this
21:51 when I was driving up at the park
22:02 I've been here a number of times
22:02 especially when I lived here I would
22:04 stop off here occasionally
22:06 John Ritter is a big part of my life
22:13 I guess to remember the
22:13 getting the news I worked at Office Max
22:16 when he passed
22:18 it's hard to believe that today
22:20 20 years
22:40 148 passed on this day
22:40 11th of September 2003 20 years to the
22:44 day two decades
23:01 he has working at Office Max
23:01 I believe it was a little later in the
23:02 evening when
23:04 Elisa came over the radio I hadn't heard
23:06 me obviously that was
23:08 not in real time so possibly it was
23:10 delayed by a couple hours I don't
23:12 remember the exact hour of the day
23:14 better get the news so I went into work
23:15 later that afternoon that evening
23:17 to the evening hours I remember my boss
23:19 came up he goes did you just hear that I
23:21 said did you say John Ritter
23:34 there are some flowers here but I
23:34 believe that is a different
23:37 spot
23:45 yeah I love Three's Company Three's
23:45 Company is my all-time favorite sitcom
23:46 and we do like a lot of comedies with
23:48 sitcoms but something about Three's
23:49 Company just resonated with me seen
23:51 every episode
23:52 many many times
23:55 John Ritter also opened he did the grand
23:58 opening of what is now Hollywood Studios
24:00 Disney's MGM Studios
24:03 he was up on the earful Water Tower and
24:06 he also did the grand opening of the
24:07 living Seas at Epcot so big tie-in to
24:10 Disney
24:12 Three's Company eight simple rules of
24:14 course Problem Child
24:16 just so many
24:39 now tomorrow so as a recording of This
24:39 is the 11th tomorrow I believe Johnny
24:42 Cash
24:49 will be the 20th anniversary
24:49 of his passing as well
24:51 I have to admit John Ritter hit me a
24:54 little harder than Johnny Cash I love
24:55 Johnny Cash's music but something about
24:57 John Ritter just not being
25:00 you know on the earth and getting that
25:03 news
25:05 even still it just it kind of blows my
25:07 mind a little bit
25:09 kind of like Jim Varney him and Jim
25:10 Varney were on the same wavelength with
25:13 me with Nostalgia and growing up and
25:17 the people that I entertainers that I
25:20 was that I enjoyed watching and was
25:22 inspired by and heroes if you will you
25:25 know is when it came to entertainment
25:27 speaking of comedians Stan Laurel's
25:31 right over here too
25:32 pretty close to John
25:45 well at least this placard is
25:45 wife and Aunt down here
25:54 yeah John Ritter I mean obviously Stan
25:54 Lore Master of Comedy
25:56 really John Ritter was such a great
25:58 physical comedian
26:00 and his father Tex Ritter
26:03 very popular country star
26:06 in fact
26:08 Country Bear Jamboree Big Al when he
26:11 sings Blood on the saddle which they
26:13 just announced at a recent Disney event
26:15 that they were going to be changing the
26:18 songs and getting rid probably that one
26:21 and among other some of the original
26:22 country bear Jamberry songs so when Big
26:25 Al comes out and sings The Blood on the
26:27 saddle song Big Al's voice is John
26:30 Ritter's father Tex Ritter that is the
26:32 actual recording that they took that was
26:35 not written for the attraction they just
26:37 used it
26:39 so that's what you're hearing as Big Al
26:41 John Ritter's dad Tex Ritter sang the
26:45 big
26:47 fun fact and it's going to be gone so
26:50 get rid of it
26:55 Yeah country bears is changing
26:55 everything Disney's changing all kind of
26:57 stuff okay none you can do about it
26:59 anymore and here at the very top of the
27:01 property oh there's a squirrel right
27:03 there
27:04 look at that squirrel
27:09 kind of tough to see him he's climbing
27:09 up that wall
27:11 is this mural
27:12 God gave us Liberty and people who
27:14 forsake God lose their Liberty quoted by
27:17 the founder Stand Fast therein the
27:20 Liberty we're in
27:21 Christ has made us free
27:33 obviously was another
27:33 another event that should be
27:37 remembered as well
27:39 I think everyone who was alive at that
27:41 point knows where they were on that day
27:43 as well
27:51 watching it on TV my parents house
27:51 I just woke up
27:54 and the girl I was dating at that time I
27:56 talked to her on the phone she told me
27:58 on the phone turned the TV on
28:11 and looking back on that the fact that
28:11 that was 22 years ago
28:18 this really is a
28:18 fantastic mural here
28:21 Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills there's two
28:23 Forest Lawns this is the Hollywood
28:24 Hollywood Hills one
28:35 packed right up there you can see the
28:35 Tower of the side
28:37 on the Hollywood side
28:39 so this would be more or less the
28:41 Burbank side of the Hollywood side of
28:43 Griffith Park would be the Hollywood
28:45 side so Hollywood's over there and the
28:47 sign is just right over the cusp of that
28:49 berm there the top of the mountain
28:59 so they don't want you leaving the
28:59 flowers out more than us
29:01 a pillow deer they don't want you
29:03 putting too many flowers out there
29:05 saying don't leave more than three
29:06 things
29:08 because the deer will eat the flowers
