the Los Angeles Zoo that's the new urlan
0:05
there's an older one about a mile or two
0:08
up the road that's where we're going
0:11
today and as you can see by the drops on
0:14
my rental car windshield it's raining in
0:17
Southern California
0:19
welcome everyone Adam and the whoo here
0:21
I have been to this location before but
0:24
in the world of YouTube it was quite a
0:26
while ago March I believe it was March
0:29
2013 there's a coyote over here there's
0:34
a coyote or is that a fox not on the
0:39
leash and not not tame staring at me in
0:43
case turning away that's safe to be
0:47
wandering around out here
0:50
maybe he's guarding the old relics you
0:54
see I'm gonna go yeah just keep keep
1:01
walking that way just just keep going
1:04
that way buddy now if memory serves me
1:06
correctly five years ago it was a lot
1:08
more difficult to find the spot since
1:11
then they have put signage at the bottom
1:13
of the hill directing everyone up to the
1:15
former Zoo now a picnic area and it's no
1:19
longer in use it's just sitting here
1:21
tagged up graffiti'd that's pretty much
1:25
a hiking area here in Griffith Park the
1:28
footage I uploaded half a decade ago was
1:30
not the greatest I'll be the first to
1:32
admit it
1:33
I felt I needed to come out here on this
1:35
overcast day and just show a little bit
1:39
more detail of what now exists according
1:43
to the sign as best I can tell even
1:45
though the spray paint is covering the
1:47
number it was active until 1965 until it
1:51
moved just down the road to the new
1:52
location since its closure it's been
1:54
used for a lot of TV commercials shows
1:58
and even feature films in fact the scene
2:02
from anchorman took place right there
2:07
why not use it if it's sitting here
2:09
right it's a pretty cool backdrop for
2:12
any episode some of the passageways and
2:15
staircases are locked with a gate wait
2:18
you know now that I say that I could be
2:22
wrong
2:23
oh yeah you know it's locked it's
2:27
interesting to think that 50 years ago I
2:30
gotta watch my stuff going down here 50
2:31
years ago animals roamed around now
2:36
where people share a cheese sandwich
2:38
couldn't do that back to Dennis you
2:41
probably get mauled by a bear could it
2:48
be oh yeah
3:02
someone really wanted to use those
3:02
stairs back here you see a yellow truck
3:05
that's a park ranger patrolling this
3:09
whole area someone was celebrating their
3:12
New Year's Eve out here pretty good
3:18
place to celebrate the holiday and kick
3:20
off 2018 I suppose here's another open
3:25
doorway look how I might be just a
3:28
little to get through there I made it
3:33
not very far go back the closer look at
3:42
this trapdoor gate slams down which
3:46
would startle me if that happened being
3:48
held by this metal rope that goes up to
3:51
that pulley and through a pipe that goes
3:57
the perimeter of the cage all the way to
4:00
the top and then an attendant at that
4:04
door open and closed it there are some
4:07
smaller sections that are blocked off by
4:10
this fence a few people have scaled over
4:14
the top of it to get in there even
4:18
almost like a skateboard ramp someone
4:22
has tossed over every year this property
4:24
is used for a haunted hayride which I
4:26
have not done yet but next Halloween I'm
4:29
gonna check it out you can see where
4:31
they patched up some of the holes to
4:35
keep looky-loos from sneaking around
4:37
were they they shouldn't be sliding down
4:39
that incline is a wooden piece of a
4:41
building that once sat right here was
4:45
falling apart and they bulldoze that
4:47
most likely for safety reasons there is
4:50
a great view from up here what you're
4:53
looking at straight ahead I believe is
4:55
Glendale and off to the left if all that
4:59
foliage wasn't blocking it right around
5:01
that way would be heading towards
5:04
Burbank any rain in Los Angeles as
5:06
always welcome as you can see fires are
5:10
always a problem I'm not certain if
5:12
these were from the one
5:14
a month or two ago out here but there is
5:17
plenty of charred remains right above
5:20
this other cage when in Rome or Wynn at
5:26
an old Zoo
5:27
- is the zoo Ian's and go and say I
5:34
screwed that part of the old fencing
5:36
that used to keep the animals in and
5:38
people out is a very heavily trodden and
5:42
trafficked area a lot of people come up
5:46
here just wander around along the ledge
5:49
looking down on where I started and Sam
5:54
has documented his love for Olivia for
5:57
posterity on the side of the wall as
6:00
well as this cactus droopy cactus this
6:07
is the view from the opposite end
6:08
looking down that creepy staircase
6:16
pretty cool out here very peaceful very
6:16
peaceful today a monster has been drawn
6:19
on that piece of concrete right there
6:22
but don't let it scare you don't cry
6:24
you must remember boys don't cry
6:30
that's a cure song right I have my hand
6:35
inside a hole that's the only thing that
6:37
would possibly fit in this hole except a
6:41
small child who else could get through
6:44
there not me not me if you ever come out
6:50
here do not rely on the posted signs for
6:52
info they're very difficult to read yet
6:56
to do your own research either on the
6:58
internet or old newspaper articles
7:03
pretty fascinating stuff just to think
7:06
that over half a century ago tourists
7:10
were walking right through here looking
7:11
looking at the animals most everything
7:13
is locked up safe and sound but
7:17
occasionally you'll stumble on a door a
7:20
gate that is
7:22
up it fooled me it fooled me there's no
7:26
lock to have it welded shut
7:28
wham wam wam where no living creatures
7:33
were in captivation down inside there as
7:36
much as it looks like that would have
7:38
been the case this is a drainage area
7:41
stated CET a 7/8 either place there as a
7:46
significance of a runoff for flooding or
7:51
maybe somebody on their own accord just
7:53
wrote that there in tile and rock while
7:57
there's no water currently I bet when
8:00
there's a torrential downpour this is
8:02
quite an active space and pretty
8:04
impressive as the water rushes down
8:07
these little corridors what's that up
8:10
there hidden Mickey it looks to have
8:15
been on a couple different levels you
8:16
see some cages there behind the brush
8:19
but down here are some former
8:23
foundations some concrete wood metal
8:26
poles this tree has been removed little
8:33
relics and remnants below the remaining
8:37
cages what's that up there it almost
8:41
looks like a restroom I think it is I
8:44
think it's just an access way for the
8:46
employees to do their feeding that the
8:49
employees are feeding the animals are
8:51
being fed that's what I meant or maybe
8:53
that was that could have been the break
8:55
room mate yes I like this it reminds me
8:59
of the mountain from the Paramount logo
9:02
or maybe even the beginning of Raiders
9:05
of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones I mean
9:09
it's not it just looks like it and all
9:12
the way at the tippy tops someone's
9:13
standing up there it's netted off so
9:16
they don't fall I guess you can hike up
9:18
there I need to do that in the future I
9:21
need to I need to go up there someday in
9:24
the future attached to one of these
9:25
trees is a fly bag and at first I
9:29
thought there was a large congregation
9:30
size-wise of these creatures
9:34
but that's just a drawing that's not a
9:35
real fly upon closer look the flies that
9:39
are deceased are in the bottom of there
9:41
years ago I used to work at a feed store
9:43
and would go out and deliveries to
9:46
ranches and farms to deliver hay and
9:49
feed to horses and cows and in the barns
9:53
there would be dozens of those fly bags
9:56
this is in Florida where there was lots
9:58
of flies lots of mosquitoes lots of bugs
10:00
lots of rain lots of insects and those
10:04
fly bags would have no joke a hundred
10:07
thousand flies in each bag smelling a an
10:12
odor that you do not someone else's over
10:16
there and I'm not alone someone's
10:19
yelling over in the and the cages for
10:22
those that live locally finding this
10:23
place in this day and age is very simple
10:25
but I'll show you the path if you decide
10:27
to visit you want to look for this
10:30
wooden staircase you're gonna start in
10:33
the parking lot down there on the
10:34
weekends this area is very busy and
10:36
difficult to find a parking spot my
10:39
recommendation if you're gonna come up
10:40
to any of the public areas of Griffith
10:43
Park do it on a weekday and just keep a
10:45
keen eye out for the side placed against
10:49
the pole park anywhere up that hill look
10:52
for the wooden staircase and you're
10:54
there it's been nice today seeing a
10:56
little condensation in the air a little
10:57
shower
10:59
from the heavens being a Floridian for
11:02
over 25 years
11:03
got used to rained but out here in
11:06
Southern California it's a rarity in
11:08
fact I've been traveling so much this
11:10
might be the first time I've seen it
11:11
since I lived here I've been gone more
11:14
than half the time I've resided in Los
11:18
Angeles it's a nice change that's gonna
11:22
do it for today's overcast
11:24
adventure that's what we'll call it
11:26
returning to the kinda-sorta not really
11:31
abandoned I used to think it was
11:33
abandoned but not when I even gonna use
11:34
that in the title oh well there will be
11:36
no abandonment in the title because
11:38
everyone can get there everyone can see
11:40
it it's not really it's used thank you
11:43
for watching I'm gonna start doing a
11:45
little bit more Los Angeles base stuff
11:48
some touristy stuff some off-the-grid
11:51
some stuff up in the nether regions and
11:54
on the outskirts that's why I took
11:57
advantage of this rental car my mom
11:58
visited last week she flew back home
12:01
night before last and I am taking the
12:04
rental car into my own hands
12:07
