this is my first video of my van
0:04
dwelling experiment Adventure whatever
0:06
you want to call
0:18
it I was paying $550 for my apartment
0:22
every month I didn't have a roommate I
0:24
didn't have a wife I didn't have a Livin
0:25
girlfriend I had no other secondary
0:28
person that was helping me out with
0:29
bills
0:30
so $550 every month of my paycheck went
0:34
to rent and 100 to 150 of that on top of
0:38
that went to utilities so on average I
0:41
was spending $650 to $700 a month every
0:45
month for my
0:56
apartment another thing that got me
0:56
thinking
0:57
was my van payment every month on this
1:00
van is $440 a month I got this van for
1:05
the sole intention of my band touring we
1:09
needed a tour we were going to do a few
1:11
East Coast tours the van we had was a
1:15
minivan that I used to own that the
1:17
transmission was going out on I always
1:19
swore throughout my life that I would
1:20
never make a car payment I'd always
1:22
drive a clunker you know something off
1:25
of Buy Here Pay Here
1:26
lot and I would just you know use that
1:29
till it fell apart
1:30
well we decided to go on tour as the
1:32
band by the way the new threat is the
1:35
band name check us out on iTunes the new
1:37
threat look it up download it give us a
1:40
little spending money maybe make a ham
1:42
sandwich or a balone sandwich this is
1:44
called subliminal
1:46
advertising so many years have passed me
1:51
by I've got my
2:00
girl one of the really good things about
2:00
having the limo tents on the van is the
2:02
fact that you can't see the curtains
2:03
that are inside there that way police
2:06
officers passer buers and very nosy
2:08
people won't realize that you're
2:10
sleeping inside and they won't also be
2:12
able to see the curtains which will also
2:14
make them a little bit more Curious so
2:16
limo tent is definitely uh the way I
2:18
decided to
2:25
go so I got to thinking what can I do to
2:25
get rid of the payments on this van and
2:28
actually own the van
2:31
so the idea I came up with is I'm not
2:33
going to pay rents anymore I'm not going
2:35
to pay utilities anymore I'm going to
2:38
sell all my stuff that I can't fit in
2:39
the van anything that's not a necessity
2:42
I'm going to get rid of it and that's
2:44
basically what I did to be owned by the
2:46
things you own is a very difficult thing
2:49
to
2:50
overcome it definitely was not easy but
2:53
once you start getting rid of stuff at
2:54
least for me it wasn't really that hard
2:57
basically now all I really need is
2:59
what's in the this van for
3:02
now maybe there'll come a point in my
3:04
life when all this will seem like a
3:05
really dumb idea but at this point it
3:09
makes a lot of sense the van I've had
3:11
for about 3 three and a half years is
3:12
the Ford E150 van it's a
3:16
2006 um I'll show you kind of what I did
3:18
to it if you look here um you'll see the
3:21
limo tent so if you'll notice the front
3:23
window has no tent on it uh if you go
3:26
around to the front you'll see there's
3:27
no tent there's no tent strip across
3:29
there just to try to create a little bit
3:33
of uh unnotice ability I guess you could
3:35
say I don't know if that's a word but
3:37
unnotice ability is the word uh I'm
3:40
going to coin that phrase right now one
3:42
thing is for sure if you decide to go
3:44
this route um you're going to get very
3:46
little support in your Endeavor
3:49
everyone's going to try to talk you out
3:50
of
3:51
it I say everyone but a very good
3:54
portion you might find one or two
3:56
like-minded people that will give you a
3:58
little bit of support but even those
4:00
people as much as they like to talk
4:02
about them doing it most people don't
4:04
step up to the plate and actually do it
4:06
themselves basically by me doing this by
4:08
moving out and saving myself around $700
4:11
a
4:13
month I can get the things that I want
4:16
to get which is a new video camera this
4:19
video that I'm filming is on a very very
4:21
lowquality digital camera I really want
4:24
to step up my game start making some
4:27
documentaries other things on YouTube I
4:29
want to film a video every day so I
4:31
really want to take my videos to the
4:33
next level this is actually giving me
4:36
the ability to do that so I was also
4:37
able to get things fixed on this van I
4:39
would have had to save for about a year
4:42
to get new tires alignment oil change
4:45
all that stuff on the van that would
4:47
have all been my little bit of extra
4:49
money the 10% of my check that wasn't
4:51
going to rent the van payment all that
4:53
stuff now I have $700 a month to play
4:57
around with my goal is as of this video
5:00
is to have my van paid off on my
5:01
birthday which is August 10th that will
5:04
be 11 months earlier than when my payoff
5:09
balance is due so they open up the door
5:11
and you know nothing really different up
5:13
here you can see where I've started to
5:15
put the
5:16
curtains uh this curtain here is a
5:18
complete blackout curtain I bought up
5:20
front I have the little my little phone
5:23
charger that I can charge while I'm
5:24
driving there's a copy of my Band
5:27
CD the new threat make sure you get that
5:30
bad boy on iTunes the world's smallest
5:35
apartment so we'd enter
5:38
inside you see the curtains all the way
5:40
around um those are dark curtains over
5:43
the top of the limo
5:44
tent then you got on the side you got
5:46
other regular curtains I got some
5:48
hanging clothes then you got some
5:50
smaller curtains up front here that you
5:53
can kind of see through with a limo tent
5:55
it really makes it impossible especially
5:57
at night and then across the back window
5:58
just to give me
6:00
a little bit more privacy I put a black
6:03
trash bag taped it up on there so it's
6:05
100% SE proof cannot see in this is the
6:09
other side as far as the bed goes if you
6:11
look under here here's an air mattress
6:14
so I got a twin size air mattress with
6:16
the sheet on it I've got one regular
6:19
standard sleeping bag for when it gets a
6:22
little bit cold got a regular blanket
6:24
any of these I can utilize how I see fit
6:27
and then I've also got a0 de sleeping
6:29
bag
6:30
so if it gets super cold climb inside
6:32
this bad boy zip it up and you're in a
6:35
little cocoon a full size body pillow to
6:39
block the back window so I'm not leaning
6:40
against the window and then I've got
6:42
three four five pillows back there
6:44
plenty of pillows also across the back I
6:47
have a curtain rod wedged in there with
6:48
the curtains now what I did to make the
6:50
bed was I took the two regular seats
6:54
that were already included that mounted
6:56
here here's the mounts
6:59
like you'd see in a regular van and I
7:02
took those seats and I turned them
7:03
sideways facing each other so it made a
7:06
u-shape so the backs are here that you'd
7:08
sit on and there's the
7:10
u-shape I took some wood balanced it out
7:13
so it created completely balanced and
7:16
then I bought this twin size air
7:17
mattress put the air mattress on top of
7:19
it I use my base amp from my band it
7:23
fits perfectly with the air mattress
7:25
sets right on top of there I've also got
7:27
our band's t-shirts here
7:30
I've got the merch rack I've got this
7:32
which I can use the bathroom in in case
7:35
I can't make it to a bathroom I can
7:36
always go pee in that I have my
7:38
toiletries here I have my laptop here my
7:42
Dawn of the Dead sticker best horror
7:44
film ever made I have my two Bas guitars
7:47
I have my work shoes there and I have
7:50
two duffel bags for clothes all my work
7:52
clothes are in
7:53
there and all my personal clothes after
7:56
work and my days off are in Here and Now
7:59
that's really all I need I'm a huge
8:01
movie fan and uh it was very tough to
8:03
get rid of a lot of my DVDs cuz I don't
8:05
I really don't want to have 200 DVDs in
8:08
here cuz it's kind of pointless so I
8:10
pretty much just kept a few key ones so
8:12
I got a few of my DVDs here of course I
8:14
got back to the future got a little
8:16
Threes Company can't go wrong with some
8:17
John Ritter then I've got some uh some
8:19
other DVDs try to keep me motivated a
8:21
little bit a huge Superman fan so I got
8:24
a little Superman the movie in
8:26
there and then I got ones that kind of
8:28
relate to my
8:30
situation kind of relate to my situation
8:32
a little bit we got The Truman Show uh
8:35
Jim Carrey played a guy that definitely
8:36
was looking for some adventure and
8:37
wanted to get out this kind of sums up
8:40
how I've been feeling lately and why I'd
8:41
even kind of went this this route with
8:43
the
8:44
van you got the mosquito Coast Harrison
8:48
Ford's best movie it's about a guy that
8:50
just uh just got tired of a lot of
8:52
things and kind of kind of sim doing
8:55
similar things to what I'm doing now and
8:57
what a lot of other people are kind of
8:58
thinking and feeling so if you haven't
9:00
seen this movie check it
9:12
movie They
9:12
Live and of course Taxi Driver nothing
9:15
gets you more excited and and thinking
9:17
man I can do this on my own than Robert
9:19
dairo taking his fist over the stove
9:22
come get
9:23
some by not living in my
9:26
apartment and for utilities I'm actually
9:28
saving myself $22 a day all month even
9:32
days I don't work once the van's paid
9:34
off in August I won't have a van payment
9:38
I won't have rent and I won't have
9:40
utilities that'll be $37 every day I'm
9:43
not putting towards all those
9:46
expenditures I can do a lot with $37 a
9:49
day
