0:06 Autry Museum of the American West
0:08 welcome everyone atom zoo whoo here for
0:11 some time now this has been on my list
0:14 of things to do but it took me till now
0:17 to arrive and check it out but I'm
0:20 excited we're gonna see some exhibits
0:22 learn some history possibly even
0:26 experience some artifacts and just enjoy
0:30 the day I'm inviting you to join me
0:32 shall we saddle up partner because we're
0:36 going in there ours are as follows open
0:39 every day at 10:00 a.m. except Monday
0:40 when they're closed normally closed at
0:43 4:00 on the weekdays and 5:00 p.m. on
0:45 the weekends there will be no gold
0:47 panning today it's closed due to high
0:50 temperatures take a look at the size of
0:54 this it's probably about 10 to 12 feet
0:58 tall there's not just one but two in
1:02 another wood carving here of Jesus on
1:06 the cross there's a lot of interesting
1:07 things inside here the stuff I am most
1:11 fascinated about is going to be down
1:15 this direction this painting is called
1:16 matinee cowboy done by a gentleman never
1:20 the name of Fritz Scholder
1:22 if you enjoy old movie and TV westerns
1:26 that this is where you want to be
1:30 artifacts galore
1:38 from yesteryear some of our favorite
1:38 cowboy heroes according to this the
1:41 saddle was used by the one and only
1:43 Buffalo Bill Cody how cool is that you
1:48 can see a little carving in the letter
1:50 there spelling out his last name one of
1:53 the biggest stars of the silent western
1:55 era was Tom Mix
1:58 1917 or around then he could be seen
2:01 wearing this exact hat and these are
2:05 some of the props used and some of those
2:08 old serials this carved leather
2:10 portfolio was created in 1940 after he
2:13 passed away in an automobile accident
2:15 and you can look at the names and
2:18 scribed on their 1940s that was way
2:23 before my time Tim McCoy and Ken Maynard
2:26 and under their corresponding posters
2:29 are some items a hat boots and a saddle
2:34 used by both of these guys the Charles
2:37 started best known as the Durango kid
2:40 there is one of his weapons and really
2:44 interesting down here there is a notepad
2:48 that has his name branded in the side of
2:52 it something called a dime novel and
2:55 look at this trapper he's fighting a
2:57 dragon America's favorite singing cowboy
3:01 that is quite the outfit very
3:05 very stylish known for singing here
3:07 comes Santa Claus and Rudolph the
3:10 red-nosed reindeer and this toy you
3:13 could go home with this you could go
3:15 home with a gun even the horse is
3:17 getting in the spirit the bridle awesome
3:21 take a look let's zoom in even the
3:25 horse's bridle is made up of one guitar
3:28 of Monte Hale and I'm noticing over here
3:32 in the corner is yet another one of
3:34 these books that have the have the
3:38 carvings oh look at that that is very
3:40 very detailed in a world of flat-screen
3:42 TVs and very large huge HD projectors
3:46 it's hard to imagine watching something
3:48 on a television this tiny look at the
3:52 old TV guides sitting atop it who can
3:54 forget Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and
3:58 there's the clothing that they wore in
4:00 one of many different episodes and films
4:05 even their boots right down here on
4:07 either side along the top of the
4:09 displays is a film reel that stretches
4:13 all along this exhibit it just goes
4:17 completely around
4:23 pretty cool looking Satan's cradle the
4:23 Cisco Kid and Annie Get Your Gun I was
4:29 not familiar with this one George
4:31 Hamilton played Zorro the gay blade and
4:38 in Thelma & Louise they have they have a
4:42 few props from that film as well big
4:44 Sabol reportedly took 14 years to
4:46 complete and weighs approximately 70
4:51 pounds
4:52 imagine the horse that had to carry it I
4:54 think that answers my question it's
4:57 quite the noble steed it's very
5:02 impressive I must say Rex Allen known as
5:04 the Hawaiian cowboy definitely knew how
5:09 to accessorize you don't see too many
5:12 guitars that are that detailed in this
5:16 day and age something also very
5:19 interesting down here you can see
5:21 obviously they did not use real bullets
5:24 they use these flash powder blanks
5:28 Walker Texas Ranger Chuck Norris there
5:31 in the middle that's his outfit and
5:33 James Arness marshal Dillon from
5:36 Gunsmoke man that is so awesome
5:41 during some public appearances Clayton
5:43 Moore The Lone Ranger would put on this
5:46 outfit that very one behind this glass
5:49 case Bonanza was also a very big hit
5:52 following the lives of the Cartwright
5:54 family inscribed on this legal pad is
5:57 the original pilot handwritten right
6:01 there even show some of horses and Ben's
6:03 lines
6:04 that's two-sided you can faintly see the
6:07 writing on the other side of the paper
6:09 kind of protruding through a Best of the
6:12 West collection the ultimate children's
6:16 room I have to say living in this era I
6:19 would be quite jealous if any of my
6:22 friends had a setup where they slept
6:26 like this sweet Davy Crockett blankets
6:30 and Oh Kate shows an intruder
6:33 he's got the holster next to his bad
6:36 this is a holdup
6:37 I've come for your Lone Ranger record
6:39 player while are you sleep partner Davy
6:42 Crockett lariats to create a lasso a
6:46 Hopalong Cassidy chair and radio to
6:49 listen to some cowboy tunes even the
6:53 King of Pop got in the spirit all of
6:55 this stuff was created for Michael
6:58 Jackson this belt can be seen in a lot
7:01 of the beaded promotional material his
7:05 signature on sites inscribed on that
7:09 little painting there and here's here's
7:13 his silver shoes in 2002 the last time
7:16 he ever wore the one glove for a photo
7:19 op and there is the glove right there on
7:23 display
7:25 remember the John Wayne film Rooster
7:27 Cogburn where he wore an eye patch that
7:29 might refresh your memory well there is
7:33 the eye patch
7:36 the child behind me is not in growth
7:38 Clint Eastwood from Pale Rider on the
7:40 right and Unforgiven on the left this is
7:44 what happens to assassins around here
7:49 one of my personal favorites three
7:52 amigos this hat was worn by Chevy Chase
7:56 and they have all three of their
7:59 holsters even little Nettie needle
8:03 endures I love all this old
8:05 paraphernalia but the size of this
8:08 wooden horse it's really hard to compare
8:11 it is teeny-tiny I mean look at the
8:13 handkerchief that's on top of it it just
8:16 shows they really need to be about the
8:19 size of that kid that just ran by in
8:21 order to ride that stallion gonna head
8:25 down to the bottom level now from the
8:27 second floor and the mural down here
8:31 along the wall is very expansive as it
8:36 stretches and shows the history of the
8:39 Old West to gain entry it costs $14 and
8:43 after you pay that you get one of these
8:46 little stickers just as you wander
8:49 around so the employees know that you
8:51 didn't race but you didn't try to sneak
8:52 in the gang's all here pretty much
8:55 everyone is represented down here on
8:59 this painting I'll do a very slope and
9:05 walk around and see if you recognize a
9:08 few of all of or maybe just one or two
9:13 of those pictured
9:17 along this very tall mural spirits of
9:24 the West and they take it a step further
9:30 and you have a little photo op you can
9:33 basically pretend you're in Monument
9:35 Valley just like in those old John Ford
9:38 films sure is dry out here in the desert
9:42 getting a little parched those desert
9:46 winds are kicking up we're no longer
9:48 dealing with entertainment we have
9:51 stepped into the world of real life no
9:56 television radio or movie artifacts Wild
10:00 Bill Hickok was murdered in 1870 while
10:03 playing cards legend has it he fell
10:05 holding two black eights and a pair of
10:07 black aces the dead man's and it might
10:11 be very difficult to see but on the
10:12 backstrap of this god is his name James
10:16 Butler Hickok Wow
10:21 it's pretty amazing
10:28 Wild West shows were very popular and
10:28 none more popular than sharpshooter
10:30 Annie Oakley showing that video and here
10:35 are some of her tools of the trade and
10:38 the lights making like a really crazy
10:40 effect federal marshals outfit in 1880
10:43 would have resembled something like that
10:46 and if you wanted to be a sheriff this
10:49 was your manual you have to read and
10:51 memorize and learn everything in that
10:54 book inside this jail cell
10:56 wears a belong are some of the members
10:59 of the infamous Dalton Gang in 1892
11:04 Emmet Dalton wore this Colt revolver and
11:06 rode into Coffeyville Kansas with his
11:09 brothers the townspeople did not take
11:12 kindly to them attempting to rob the
11:15 bank the story of Billy the Kid and Pat
11:17 Garrett's after Billy escaped from
11:21 prison it was killed by sheriff Garrett
11:25 there is Billy the kid's rifle and down
11:29 here are some of sheriff Garrett's
11:33 artifacts his name also carved into the
11:37 barrel of this weapon Dodge City piece
11:41 commissioned circa 1883 something you
11:44 would have seen Wyatt Earp utilize the
11:48 rampant cult showed up quite a bit you
11:52 can see they have provided a magnifying
11:56 glass and you can see the cult you just
11:59 zoom in a little bit more you could see
12:02 the cult teeny tiny but magnified by the
12:06 glass right there on the side of course
12:10 the classic piano and bar area and over
12:18 on the opposite side of the room is the
12:21 gambling facilities the roulette table
12:26 the poker section
12:29 an assortment of other things like this
12:32 game that has a metal frog on top of it
12:36 I guess you toss something in the frogs
12:38 mouth or down in those holes perhaps
12:40 kind of wandering through the recreated
12:43 town that they have placed in this
12:47 section you can see some of the types of
12:50 businesses that you would have seen even
12:53 even a church building right there now I
12:57 am familiar with the old McGuffey
12:59 readers that they use for education in
13:01 school but here's another one similar
13:03 called Greenleaf's
13:04 common school arithmetic I've always
13:07 been fascinated with this era of time
13:12 they've been amazing to board a
13:14 stagecoach I mean you could do it now at
13:16 like scene parks and attractions but if
13:19 that was really the only way to travel
13:22 no airplanes no taxis new burs just the
13:26 stagecoach of course trains and horses
13:29 also an option you get the idea
13:32 or if you're feeling daring you could
13:34 have wrote a buffalo but even back then
13:36 I'm pretty sure that was probably found
13:39 the pront this guy's waiting on the
13:40 train to arrive the Iron Horse as they
13:44 called it check this out this ran along
13:49 the side of the rails he'd sit on that
13:51 little contraption which was on one part
13:54 of the railroad track and then the other
13:56 part the other wheel was on the separate
13:59 side and you just careened down the open
14:03 rails stepped outside now to an area not
14:06 accessible from the front a garden area
14:10 that's very beautiful you can hear the
14:14 waterfall
14:15 off in the distance and there's a
14:17 seating area with this decorative
14:21 photographed backdrop and some rocks
14:26 here get a closer peek here at the
14:31 waterfall itself
14:51 it's nice back here and one would not
14:51 know this section even existed if you
14:54 didn't go through the museum first
14:56 smells very fresh out here the aroma of
14:59 the shrubs and plants in the garden area
15:02 smell nice to name a few test them on
15:06 planted in this section and over here
15:10 wooly blue curls something called
15:16 manzanita and wormwood now I definitely
15:21 do not have a green thumb but I can
15:23 appreciate wonderful fragrances beauty
15:27 and ambiance
15:31 back inside now some artwork by Rick
15:35 Bartow a lot of wooden carvings that he
15:40 has done this is an example of some of
15:46 his work birds are definitely a theme
15:48 that he sticks to his head is being
15:52 escorted off by some sort of a hawk my
15:55 interpretation of this art piece you
15:59 pull away the layers the face layers are
16:02 being pulled away signifying that
16:04 underneath we all are clowns and above
16:11 our heads
16:12 there's always okay I give up
16:17 manzanita wood makes up the torso and
16:20 head and neck of this horse how very
16:24 creative I could never do this I can
16:26 never take pieces of a tree the limbs of
16:31 a tree and create something this
16:35 realistic why would just be a big
16:39 goulash of sticks stay cool out here
16:43 those Southern California Rays can pack
16:46 quite a punch that's gonna do it for
16:48 today from the pond tree Museum of the
16:52 Old West
16:53 here in Griffith Park Los Angeles
16:56 California I must say I am disappointed
17:00 that it took me this long to check this
17:02 wonderful place now I highly encourage
17:05 you if you're in the LA area
17:08 to come here and enjoy the history if
