today's adventure takes place on the
0:02
same premises that these sloths are
0:05
residing on they're not moving they're
0:09
sitting standing very still maybe
0:18
they're paying attention to those crows
0:20
welcome everyone Adam as the whoo here
0:23
behind me are the Los Angeles Tar Pits
0:26
one of many on site I've been here
0:30
before by about six months ago or so but
0:33
the museum has a new exhibit a brand new
0:37
attraction if you will but I want to
0:39
check out just opened I'm inviting you
0:41
to join me shalyah something I never
0:45
noticed before an observation pit behind
0:48
that wall wonder what's down in there
0:51
now I've heard of normal gumbo
0:55
usually pretty tasty but fossil gumbo I
0:58
don't know if he went down there with a
1:00
fork knife and spoon it might not be the
1:02
most the greatest delicacy to chow down
1:05
on that's all kind of there's all kind
1:08
of skulls and body parts wedged down
1:12
down in that chunk it says here it
1:16
wasn't only the mastodons that got stuck
1:18
but also their predators decide to grab
1:22
a meal and as they got closer their feet
1:25
get stuck
1:27
and that guiit are and then they would
1:29
end up in the same demise as what they
1:32
were trying to attack
1:36
you'll notice on the left some tusks
1:39
protruding out of
1:41
that's skull but on the right looks like
1:44
a huge fish head it's not but I think
1:47
it's supposed to be but looks like the
1:48
fish mouth is open
1:50
and then huge
1:52
bug-eyes of sort right there
1:55
caught it caught it off guard
1:59
check it out bubbling up from below the
2:01
surface one big bubble and a couple
2:05
small ones above it it could almost be a
2:08
Hidden Mickey if the one on the far
2:10
right if that year would grow just a tad
2:12
bit okay here's another one center of
2:15
the screen do you notice it right smack
2:20
in the center of the screen
2:23
legit he didn't Mickey oh look at the
2:27
bubble to the left of it like gurgling
2:30
up from the soil bowels of the soil it's
2:35
a good thing they have this
2:36
identification chart with numbers so you
2:40
pick a number like let's say what I
2:42
thought was a fish head in reality
2:45
number eight is a ground sloth he'll
2:49
this
2:53
okay if you've ever wondered what a
2:56
saber-toothed cats go look like
2:59
decomposed focus your eyes right to the
3:02
center of the screen that that is one
3:07
speaking of dinosaurs look at this
3:10
vehicle that is a that is an antique if
3:13
ever I saw one
3:14
it's a true relic very thankful they
3:17
have these fences up you know if you're
3:20
a tourist or a visitor you would never
3:23
know that underneath all those fallen
3:27
leaves it's basically a death trap of
3:30
sorts alerting the location spelled out
3:33
here on the side of this cone and if you
3:38
don't think it really is rest assured
3:40
trust me don't take my word for it
3:44
sticky down there yes holy cow is
3:47
another one that says gooey
3:49
watch out butterfly there was like a
3:50
butterfly in the shot I was like the
3:53
dangers out butterfly went to the danger
3:59
zone
3:59
why such the long face you're having a
4:03
bad day every time I come out here you
4:07
still haven't cheered up yet yeah all
4:11
right
4:19
I hope it'll be alright maybe see that
4:19
Museum I'm heading to up there on the
4:20
top of the hill you'll also notice a
4:23
lady showing her puppy the guitar seems
4:29
very interested and they also have these
4:31
banners of the new exhibit I'll be
4:34
checking out mammoths and mastodons
4:38
dicta is a well concealed hidden area
4:44
wonder what's back there it's a secret
4:49
general layout of the entire area see
4:53
it's pretty expansive starting way over
4:56
here which is where I began at the
4:59
observation pit and you go past pip 1323
5:04
991 three four sixty one sixty seven
5:08
this little garden here the hearty Ice
5:13
Age survivors up to the fossil first
5:17
fossil found right inside of here right
5:24
behind this fence you can clearly see
5:26
some spider webs or some cobwebs
5:30
formulating there under the ear of Allen
5:34
here
5:36
Allan Hancock has stated I hear on this
5:40
placard
5:43
as I do with Abraham Lincoln and with
5:47
mr. Hitchcock he would be proud G it is
5:53
a tradition of sorts if you visit
5:55
Lincoln's tomb in Illinois to rub his
5:58
nose and I just kind of started doing
6:00
that with every bust statue I say she's
6:05
kind of a thing it's fascinating to just
6:07
stand here and watch whoa
6:16
that was a big bubble right there in the
6:16
middle and there's another one or a
6:18
couple of them formulating
6:25
doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason
6:25
to where they pop up
6:33
very interesting I guess that little
6:33
elephant has tried to get in too many
6:35
times it's now tied up with a ratchet
6:39
strap against that tree last thing we
6:43
need is him falling down in down in that
6:47
gurgling area and yes that's an actual
6:51
thoroughfare driving by traffic just
6:56
going to and fro paying no attention to
6:58
what's happening just a few feet beside
7:02
them according to the sign they have off
7:07
to the left they know the sculpture of
7:10
the young mammoth is tipping over and
7:12
are working quickly to fix it and that
7:15
answer is my question on why it's
7:18
trapped up to the tree they don't want
7:21
it fallen over
7:28
now reach the point where I'm heading in
7:28
to mammoths and mastodons dr. dr. Han
7:32
this tree has been written on not with
7:37
paint but with the tar itself you can
7:41
see all along its branches people have
7:44
taken sticks dipped it into the pit and
7:48
then walked over and wrote little
7:51
mementos names dates and an assortment
7:55
of other things all along its limbs
7:58
this symbolizes before coffee and after
8:04
caffeine kind of soothes the soul just a
8:07
bit just a tad everything's a lot more
8:10
peaceful more comfortable in life I
8:12
always like new exhibits pretty excited
8:15
about this just to see what's inside I
8:18
have estates spoiler-free I don't know
8:20
what to expect
8:21
noticing the first item a portal to the
8:24
Ice Age in the heart of Los Angeles this
8:27
exhibit was originally created by the
8:29
Field Museum in Chicago and has now been
8:33
moved here for a limited time you can
8:35
explore how these Titans and their
8:37
relatives evolved adapted and survived
8:39
in a changing world very impressive the
8:44
size of this thing
8:47
holy goodness that thing
8:56
that's incredible just the height and
8:56
width
8:59
be mind blowing the tusks themselves
9:02
could do some serious damage and then
9:06
the teeth the teeth are about the size
9:09
of that row of teeth is about the size
9:12
of the length of my arm it's like a
9:17
pretty good sized bite I recall seeing
9:20
this American bison before in a
9:23
different location at the museum they've
9:24
kind of shifted things around for the
9:27
new exhibits notice how there are wires
9:29
steel wires holding up the the bones and
9:33
the torso just to give the perspective
9:35
of what it would look like if it was
9:37
still alive
9:50
this miniature shows the hunting and the
9:50
processing is to look very closely but
9:54
you can see them there in the grass
9:56
towards the bottom
9:57
certainly not wasting any time letting
10:01
any of it go to waste
10:07
wow they're just like all over it
10:07
watch your fingers this is reminiscent
10:10
of Hungry Hungry Hippos you're supposed
10:12
to have a partner but even you can't by
10:15
yourself you still have a lot of fun
10:17
flanking there toss together how you
10:22
choose who the winner is you just keep
10:24
doing this till someone gets irritated
10:28
this might be taller than the original
10:32
skeleton I show when I first walked in
10:34
this is the Columbian mammoth
10:44
yeah that imagine meeting that in the
10:44
wild
11:02
you'll see our wall of dire walls there
11:02
are 400 floor on display however we have
11:05
found another 4,200 in the archives sill
11:08
making the direwolf the most abundant of
11:11
the carnivorous animals that have been
11:15
found here to date so Aston as of now
11:18
you have 400 species on site we have 404
11:22
on display on display very interesting
11:28
and it's called a dial the dials
11:38
oh wow well thank you for showing me
11:38
that it's time now for the dung
11:41
challenge can you guess which animal
11:44
left behind these samples now I don't
11:49
want to touch and feel each of them so I
11:52
think I'm gonna go with the with the
11:54
middle one let me just Nestle my my
11:57
fingers there okay I'm gonna grab onto
12:00
this nugget of yes so this is this is
12:05
the giant ground sloths poop can you
12:12
lift an appetizer looking very hungry
12:16
there this bale of hay kind of gives you
12:20
the example on what the weight class
12:22
would be for a snack oh my gosh that's
12:29
much heavier than I expected
12:32
alright here's the wall of direwolf
12:35
skulls he was referring to yeah I would
12:39
say there's probably four hundred-plus
12:41
in there to give an example on a time
12:43
line here is the direwolf skeleton and
12:48
then as I pan this way past the murals
12:50
there is
12:52
what a Dyer will look like in the flesh
12:56
you know with hair and skin and the
12:59
whole nine yards
13:00
would be horrifying to run into this
13:02
creature in the in the woodland areas
13:04
their beady eyes and yellow eyes and
13:08
they're very hungry this one had its
13:11
tongue out
13:17
give a little nibble here's an artistic
13:17
rendering of the property see there's
13:20
the big tar pit down below and then the
13:24
entry platform into where I'm now
13:27
standing right there in the center
13:34
right down in there
13:34
some studying and work taking place in
13:38
this section behind the glass check
13:41
these out
13:42
there's some little paper products that
13:45
they have contorted into the animals
13:47
themselves look at the tusks and the
13:49
fangs and this paper creatures they're
13:52
very creative
14:00
taken the very small paintbrush of sorts
14:00
and shifting those rocks around
14:07
trying to find something of significance
14:07
I do not know exactly what's taking
14:09
place but
14:13
never know what's going to be discovered
14:19
underneath that microscope these pieces
14:19
come from the most complete Columbian
14:22
skeleton ever found here at the La Brea
14:25
targets you might see researchers
14:27
cleaning and analyzing the rest of the
14:30
bones nearby in the fossil ok the fossil
14:32
lab that's what I was just looking into
14:35
this tusk belonged to Zed was the name
14:39
he was given there is some foam around
14:42
it to protect it and it's on a hydraulic
14:45
lift so they can lower it and shift it
14:47
at their disposal to to do work on it
14:51
right there in the fossil lab a pretty
14:55
cool job
15:03
it is highly encouraged to touch Stata
15:03
that you can reach out and grab the
15:05
giant Ice Age Bears noggin kind of feel
15:10
it if you're wondering how tall this guy
15:14
was take a look oh my goodness
15:19
looming over he's been one of my
15:24
favorite things here glad they haven't
15:26
gotten rid of it is this Sabretooth
15:29
playfully wrestling with his buddy
15:31
used to be an animatronic that growled
15:34
and moved around but I think that that
15:37
is no longer quite operational
15:39
nonetheless that's still here on site
15:45
what a sight that is I love it
15:48
are you tired you gone and over here me
15:53
aboard maybe been up here on this rock
15:57
ledge a while but I just closed your
16:00
mouth if you start yawning I'm gonna
16:02
yawn it's contagious I really like what
16:05
they've done with the place recently all
16:08
these new items a lot more more photo
16:11
ops than there once were and even little
16:14
little areas that you can climb through
16:16
they're made that way on purpose and
16:18
then when you bleep around in the front
16:34
I squeezed using the lever throw its
16:34
tusks well I think I just failed
16:40
I think his tusks went the opposite what
16:43
I failed yes my trunk is moving that's
16:48
so cool
16:49
a mummified version oh my goodness look
16:53
at the name it's a weird it's a woolly
16:57
and they're my it's a replica it's not a
17:01
real it's not a real mummy it's just a
17:04
it's just a replica the provost city and
17:08
family trees shown with this graph and
17:10
also these little miniatures down below
17:12
but why look at miniatures when we can
17:15
look at something on a much grander
17:17
bigger scale referring to these wall
17:20
mountings obviously and this this is
17:26
probably about 10 feet long 4 feet high
17:36
and it gives the approximate date stamp
17:37
of how long ago they lived these things
17:40
start singing and dancing I don't know
17:42
if I would enjoy it or be horrified
17:45
might enjoy it for a little bit and then
17:49
the mood might change the detail is
17:53
amazing staring at me we stare now
18:04
cat's got his tongue oh I didn't I
18:04
didn't think you could touch touch these
18:07
but they want you to reach out and pet
18:10
him
18:43
it's a nice little outdoor area will
18:43
veranda on the bottom level you can go
18:46
up top and look down but I am on the
18:49
ground level at the moment looking
18:51
upward the Sun is beaming beaming
18:55
through
19:35
it'd be okay in the end you'll be
19:35
victorious some more riding on foliage
19:55
well that's not tar someone broke the
19:55
rules and use a non tar substance
20:11
dang from this angle you can really see
20:11
how scared he is like help me
20:34
