0:01 welcome everyone I'm in Southern
0:01 California today and behind me is the
0:03 battleship known as the USS Iowa they
0:07 give tours throughout here on a daily
0:09 basis but I am going to be getting a
0:11 special tour if you will into some of
0:14 the off liit areas in the nether regions
0:18 you could say of this historic
0:21 Battleship would you like to tag along
0:24 join
0:25 me shall you
0:31 want to
0:47 see we're climbing up that this is not
0:47 tour right this is oh this is no no no
0:49 this is way off tour this is all behind
0:50 the scenes this is all behind the scenes
0:52 right
0:53 here all right I'm ready all right
1:12 first stop the 04 level essentially the
1:12 navigation
1:24 bridge this is 17 1/2 in thick it is
1:24 three
1:26 levels this door right here weighs 4,000
1:29 lb lb you can see how thick it is 17 in
1:33 you said 17 1/2 it's actually
1:37 17.3 but 17 and A2 is easier to get your
1:40 head
1:50 in this is the main Helm this is where
1:50 you steer the ship from so this is
1:52 basically the main control P if you turn
1:54 this the Rudders turn don't step on
1:57 that that's a long hard way down that's
2:01 not part of the tour no there would be a
2:03 a a redder angle indicator here and then
2:05 over to the left is What's called the
2:09 engine order Telegraph you can see the
2:11 port and
2:12 starboard indicators for Speed Port yes
2:16 starbor now is Port the front of the
2:18 ship no Port is the left side port four
2:21 letters p o r t left four letters l e f
2:26 t this is the actual captain's chair
2:28 right here is INS sign
2:30 embroidered on the
2:41 back that is a periscope this is a
2:41 periscope and it it does not it does not
2:44 go up and down it's it's hard mounted
2:47 right here you can't really see out
2:48 because there's a weather cover up top
2:50 but you can kind of look in there you
2:52 can kind of
2:53 see a little bit of the
2:56 hole now the higher you get does it get
2:58 like tighter quarters oh
3:01 absolutely now I would talk to the Pilot
3:05 House do they ever talk back or oh yes
3:08 now I would talk to teletype
3:10 repair now I would talk to uh actually
3:13 all
3:14 three combat information there's someone
3:16 in that room they can talk back to you
3:18 right now on another Squawk Box like
3:20 this as far as you know the ship isn't
3:21 haunted
3:27 right there there
3:27 is to be honest with you that is a
3:29 sensitive part uh that is a sensitive
3:32 subject on Iowa because of the accident
3:35 in 1989 April 19th
3:38 1989 the ship suffered what's called an
3:40 open breach explosion of the center gun
3:44 on turret 2 47 men were killed oh wow
3:48 what you will never see on this ship is
3:51 Ghostbusters or uh you know those those
3:55 paranormal in search of uh outfits the
3:58 captain lives in a broom closet the
4:00 captain lives in a broom closet yes and
4:03 that's really not
4:15 hyperbole no lights so why would the
4:16 captain live in something you know this
4:18 minute he is
4:21 responsible for the ship he is the
4:24 ultimate responsibility for the ship and
4:26 that responsibility is 24/7
4:30 so he is going to be in in a
4:32 location where he is very very close to
4:36 command and control every second this is
4:39 a bed what happens is this pulls out
4:42 there's a mattress folded up vertically
4:44 there that folds out and look he's
4:46 laying here and right here he's got a
4:48 gyro
4:50 Compass uh there would be a clock there
4:53 and he's got Cal right here you know he
4:55 can wake up in the middle of the night
4:56 and just look at something and tell if
4:58 he's on course and in the right
5:00 speed what was that that was 10:00 oh
5:04 that's the timer yes that's the clock
5:06 that ships Bells the ladders are
5:08 starting to narrow you also have to
5:10 watch your back and your head when going
5:12 up
5:18 these they don't make these for tall
5:18 overweight
5:26 man I just hit my
5:26 head I just hit my head out there the
5:29 eighth level up from the main deck this
5:32 is what's called The Battle Bridge the
5:34 higher up you are the better you can see
5:36 and the farther you can
5:56 see so this is pretty much the highest
5:56 you can get on this level oh we can go
5:58 higher than this the higher you go the
6:01 narrower it gets so so at this point it
6:04 really really starts to close in tight
6:06 how old that phone
6:08 is yep wow and what would this have been
6:12 used for again this is Cal uh it would
6:15 have a label on it that tells you what
6:16 circuit is uh obviously a captain or
6:19 somebody is going to know this is sound
6:22 powered push to talk it doesn't need any
6:25 electricity to
6:27 work not the one with the not the one
6:29 with flag on it but the the turret
6:31 that's up closest to us Center one the
6:33 center one and and the guns were trained
6:36 out to starboard there's a big puff and
6:39 the Bloomers those black fabric things
6:41 the Bloomers blow off and all this many
6:45 how many casualties were there for
6:47 everyone inside turret 2 was killed
6:50 everyone 47 men wow right below us right
6:53 here you can see the top level of the
6:56 armored conning Tower you see that old
7:00 block right there couple decks down
7:02 that's where they could have thrown uh
7:04 Roosevelt if they needed to in case
7:07 emergency in case of emergency the
7:08 middle level which we were in and then
7:11 that upper level right there which is
7:12 the Gunnery officer uh
7:19 position all of this is not part of the
7:19 normal tour oh no this is all just
7:21 something you're showing like an
7:22 exclusive for this is an exclusive for
7:24 Adam the woo I'm very happy to be here I
7:27 appreciate that that's that's the four
7:29 for stack right there that's a Ford
7:32 Smoke Stack when's the last time that
7:33 omitted any steam or smoke probably 1990
7:37 that is for defending against anti-ship
7:40 missiles that fires 3,000 rounds a
7:42 minute you're going to try to shoot them
7:43 down but that whole defense system is
7:45 three prong you're going to try to fool
7:47 it with chaff you're going to send up
7:48 these chaff Rockets which make a big
7:50 cloud of tint foil that's jamming you're
7:53 going to try to jam the ship's missile
7:56 and and and and scramble its brains so
7:59 you're going to try to shoot it down
8:00 you're going to try to fool it with tin
8:02 foil and you're going to try to scramble
8:03 it FR a three-part plan three-part plan
8:06 and hopefully one of them
8:08 Works a storage room and Equipment room
8:12 okay but what we have over
8:15 here is pretty
8:19 interesting this is the lookout
8:22 position look here Lookout
8:29 Port now these normally slide open they
8:29 would this would flip open it's just
8:31 oval viewing slit there'd be nine guys
8:34 sitting here with
8:50 binoculars this is the kind of stuff I
8:50 love the uh texture DEC composure of
8:52 stuff over decades and decades this blue
8:55 chair is kind of ominous there's one in
8:57 here too it sort of looks like an
8:58 execution that's what I was thinking it
9:00 looks almost like a yeah exactly like
9:02 you were saying like a electric
9:11 chair what is up there that up in there
9:11 and you see how it's a cylinder that
9:13 wants to
9:15 rotate yeah that is the Mark 38 director
9:19 that is the gun sits for the big guns
9:22 I'm actually climbed up this
9:24 hole look at this
9:43 borrow your flashlight real
9:43 quick go up in
9:46 here here we go wow look at that
9:57 happen it's just nuts in
9:57 there and you've been up in there yes I
10:00 have couple
10:07 times it's even crazy to think the
10:07 people who went up there constantly were
10:10 probably getting up there in 2 seconds
10:12 just cuz they were so used to doing it
10:14 over and over for me it takes me 10
10:16 minutes to climb up and down there all
10:18 right I'm coming into the
10:20 darkness really dark in
10:23 here here we
10:31 go holy cow look at
10:31 this
10:34 wow this is called CC combat engagement
10:37 Center look at the IMM tape computer
10:40 tape back
10:41 there oh yeah remember that
10:45 stuff Wheels yep
11:03 these are weapons consoles these are
11:03 weapons consoles arold Reagan converted
11:05 her basically to a missile boat she's
11:07 got the big guns but she also carried
11:09 Harpoon anti-ship missiles she carried
11:12 16 of those and she carried 32 Tomahawk
11:15 cruise missiles 1500 mile range nuclear
11:18 capable that means from where we sit
11:20 right now St Louis Missouri is toast
11:23 these two over here are Harpoon consoles
11:26 this is where you launch weapons right
11:28 here
11:35 if you were in battle you would dim the
11:35 lights like this
11:38 yep and what was the point of dimming
11:40 the lights from the red the the white
11:42 and the red to the blue what red light
11:44 gets you is it doesn't destroy your
11:47 night vision if you're in white light
11:48 your eyes are bleached and they found
11:51 that that blue works as good or even
12:01 better this cabin right
12:01 here General Hap Arnold general of the
12:04 Air
12:06 Force no kidding 1943 1943 November
12:15 43 Admiral Ernest King oh yeah chief of
12:15 Naval operations November
12:19 1943 so 1943 was The Big Year for these
12:21 rooms as far as well that two weeks that
12:25 November of 43 when Roosevelt was on
12:27 board everybody going to meet Uncle Joe
12:30 Stalin are the floor safe to walk on in
12:33 here yes
12:36 okay you can see after being laid up so
12:38 many years you know things just start to
12:41 fall apart after a
12:47 while what is the significance of the HD
12:47 and the C I'm guessing hot hot cold and
12:50 drinking drain drain okay this is what's
12:53 called the flag bag right above us is
12:55 the signal bridge and there's these this
12:58 box and this wack where all the signal
13:00 flags hang well this is the bottom level
13:02 of the signal flag so right behind here
13:04 there'd be a bunch of cloth flags
13:06 hanging down okay gotcha it's called the
13:09 flag bag I'm actually inside a bathroom
13:11 right now and there's you can see the
13:13 nozzles for the shower I don't think the
13:15 water works though you see these all
13:18 through the ship this is called a
13:20 bullseye and once you learn how to read
13:23 it this is uh essentially an address
13:26 like the address painted on your curb we
13:28 are on the second deck we are at frame
13:31 50 you know there's frames down along
13:34 the ship it goes down to about I think
13:36 it's about 212 zero we are on center
13:39 line L it's living space and the
13:41 division responsible is second
13:44 division that's a deck division bosen's
13:46 mates so every one of these will be
13:49 different and it tells you where you are
13:51 on the ship we just stepped off the top
13:54 of the Citadel that is the forward edge
13:57 of the armored shoe box that's in the
13:59 ship QA a quick acting armored
14:05 door this is called a pit o
14:08 death I could see why they call it that
14:11 yeah it's it's pretty self-explanatory
14:13 I'm not going to get too close to the
14:14 edge but look down there that's uh
14:18 that's
14:20 sketchy there's another one on the other
14:22 side how deep down does that go to the
14:24 very bottom of the ship pretty
14:26 much WoW
14:43 that that's impressive yes it
14:43 is it's so easy to see something like
14:47 this and it's oh it's just it's an
14:50 exhibit it's a museum you know men never
14:52 lived here you know it's this empty
14:54 space Oh it's cool and everything but
14:56 but a lot of times you don't get the
14:58 reality of what you're seeing remember
15:01 the explosion in turret 2 they tried to
15:04 pin it on someone it was complete
15:08 BS okay how they tried to
15:11 pin the accident on this guy saying this
15:14 it wasn't an accident this guy did it
15:17 this was deliberate and it wasn't
15:20 okay that's the gentleman's bunk right
15:23 there his name was Clayton Hartwig that
15:26 was signed by his sister
15:31 and this is not official policy of the
15:34 ship but there are a number of us who
15:38 care about this and care about his
15:41 memory and we every time we get down
15:44 here we check and make sure that the
15:45 light is on on his bunk gun two turret
15:51 two yeah that means those racks these
15:55 three the three over there and the three
15:56 over here these are dead men
16:02 this is a dead
16:14 zone these are guys who lost their lives
16:14 in that accident
16:16 wow and that's rather
16:19 sobering yeah I'm going to do the side
16:21 step
16:23 motion easier that way going down yes it
16:26 is
16:53 here note the crossover
16:53 pipe you use the steam twice goes
16:56 through the high press turbine comes
16:58 through the crossover pipe and you blow
17:00 it into the low pressure turbine you get
17:01 two passes off the
17:22 stuff red is a
17:22 Stern and that's how you you know
17:24 turning that wheel is is what gives you
17:28 the steam input and the RPMs and the
17:31 speed what happens when one of these
17:32 steam pipes breaks and if you're in this
17:35 corner yes you're not getting out Bingo
17:38 you
17:40 die and that is something that is not
17:42 unique to this ship that is the state of
17:47 existence of
17:49 Engineers and when you're doing this
17:52 stuff you're 20 and
17:55 indestructible and you don't think about
17:57 it but you know it and your buddy knows
17:59 about it it's in the back of your mind
18:02 it's in that dark recess doesn't come
18:04 out very often and you don't cry about
18:06 it because he's not crying for Mommy
18:08 you're not crying for mommy am I going
18:09 to cry for
18:11 mommy but you know it you don't think
18:14 about it but the reality is Snipes
18:18 Engineers when things on warships go
18:21 wrong these guys The Men Who sail below
18:25 die
18:35 you see all these valves all these
18:35 lines it looks very incomprehensible
18:38 doesn't
18:40 it kind of confusing kind of confusing
18:43 when you come down when you're new and
18:45 you come down in these spaces for the
18:47 first time what you say to yourself is
18:51 my God I will never learn all
18:54 this and what happens is you're down
18:58 here and you're working with this stuff
19:01 and believe it or not you get to the
19:03 point where every single valve every
19:06 single line down here you know what it
19:08 is you know what it does you absorb it
19:11 and it becomes part of
19:22 you now we're over in that other corner
19:24 I told you
19:25 about because this right here is the
19:27 escape trunk
19:29 this is how you get out in an
19:50 emergency this is seawater
19:50 induction this is Grace's baby the build
19:53 Dragon this thing pumps something like
19:56 20,000 gallons a minute this goes out
19:59 the bottom of the ship there's a scoop
20:00 down there and this Scoops up sea
20:03 water and takes it in there and blows it
20:06 through there underneath the turbine
20:08 where it goes through a bunch of little
20:10 tubes you see all the
20:17 tubes oh yeah so these are
20:17 condensers and you've got cold sea water
20:20 running through the tubes and then the
20:25 steam the used steam hits those old
20:28 tubes and turns back into liquid if you
20:32 want to sabotage a
20:35 ship if you want the ship to not move
20:39 this is where you do it you throw a
20:41 handful of bolts in there you throw a
20:43 wrench in there you throw a paint
20:45 scraper in there and those gears get
20:48 honked up go crunch crunch this ship
20:50 ain't going anywhere you think that's
20:52 where they got the turn throw a monkey
20:53 wrench in it could
21:00 be normally this would be closed up but
21:00 you can
21:02 see inside the steam
21:04 drum yeah this would be half full of
21:07 water and half full of
21:11 steam over here on the left on the left
21:13 of this pipe you see those oval holes
21:15 those big holes oh yeah right right
21:17 along there that's where water goes down
21:20 into the
21:23 boiler oh yeah I see them okay so the
21:27 water level in a boiler
21:30 critical if the water level in here is
21:33 too high the steam you get what's called
21:35 carryover and that steam will go over to
21:38 the engine rooms the water will hit the
21:40 turbine blades and you'll destroy the
21:51 turbines the superheated side this is
21:51 the saturated side saturated steam is
21:54 wet steam superheated steam is dry steam
21:57 what that means it is steam with no
21:59 water in
22:05 it that is where hell
22:05 happens you have what's called a goose
22:08 neck and inside the burner
22:11 tip is what's called a sprayer plate the
22:14 oil is spinning in that area that's
22:16 actually called the whirling chamber and
22:18 on this side you get a
22:21 cone of atomized oil spraying out and
22:25 that cone is on fire big time
22:35 I take a lighting off torch this is
22:35 going to have a bunch of asbestos
22:37 rope tight around it doesn't sound safe
22:40 asbestos it is what it is doesn't burn
22:44 okay doesn't burn you know you're not
22:45 you're not licking it you're not rubbing
22:46 it on your face it's dipped in jet fuel
22:50 and you get out your Zippo lighter and
22:51 you light it on fire so this is burning
22:53 like a torch like a Roman torch I hit
22:56 this now oil goes in and cuz fires in
22:59 there it catches on fire poof fires are
23:01 lit I withdraw this put it in the dump
23:05 can put the fire
23:07 out close the
23:10 door and do my air
23:13 adjustment and you're done and the fires
23:15 are lit like someone's written something
23:17 here carv something into the
23:19 desk let me
23:26 see I don't know what it says start my
23:26 heart Kickstart My heart mly crew yeah
23:30 mly Crew That's a mly crew lyric okay
23:32 Kickstart My Heart here's the
23:34 brominator yeah yeah it's the
23:38 brominator the brominator 7 this is an
23:40 old piece of Machinery right here we've
23:43 got green seawater we've got blue
23:47 freshwat we've got red firem
23:50 man fuel oil again green lines sea water
24:17 looking this is where you shoot the guns
24:17 from these are 100%
24:21 analog this is not digital these are the
24:24 triggers here but these are the triggers
24:26 if you were to pull that that is the
24:27 hand firing key this is automatic and
24:30 this is Salvo what these switches are
24:34 for is to line up all the different guns
24:39 and equip and and and Fire Control
24:41 equipment on the ship that means number
24:44 one turret inside the turret locally can
24:48 fire number three turret aft and vice
24:51 versa it all depends on how you line
24:53 these switches up this is a roster of
24:56 everyone who work in this department
25:04 on VJ Day Tokyo
25:04 bay look at the
25:06 workmanship that looks like it was done
25:08 on a
25:14 typewriter what year would you say this
25:14 was that's VJ
25:16 Day that's World War II oh yeah there
25:19 you go
25:43 if you look over here there's a couple
25:43 of uh these circular tubs in World War
25:47 II these were quad 40 guns those are the
25:50 ones everybody's
25:52 seen in the World War II news reels the
25:55 pom pom guns
26:28 wow that's awesome
26:28 where did you get in there oh we're
26:30 going in oh heck yes I like
26:42 in this is the lever that you pull you
26:42 will
26:44 probably I pull this down it's going to
26:46 go down am I safe right here yes you are
26:49 okay oh yeah now the gun's
26:53 open now what we would do a 5- in
26:57 canister and
26:59 and that gets put here put up in here
27:04 and you ram it with your hand the can
27:08 trips the PWS and the block comes
27:11 up holy cow that was loud with even
27:15 nothing in it there's a person sitting
27:17 over there with a foot
27:24 pedal right over in that little hole yep
27:24 right over in that little hole and they
27:26 would press on the foot pedal and what
27:28 the foot pedal
27:30 does I can do like
27:48 bang what does that mean long passages
27:48 well that's it's a long passage it's a
27:50 long passage that's that's significant
27:52 distance I believe Disney drew that I
27:55 could be wrong
28:01 but that that was a real historic piece
28:01 I know what those are these yeah those
28:03 are fuses no okay I'm wrong I was vacuum
28:06 tubes oh I meant I meant to say they
28:08 were vacuum tubes that's what I meant to
28:10 say One hand for your equipment one hand
28:13 for you okay and watch your head and
28:15 watch your back it's like something that
28:17 Harry Potter would use like a like a
28:19 wand indeed po that's the
28:23 BGE that's the bottom of the compartment
28:25 so when you see a rodent in here you
