0:16 welcome everyone Adam the Wu here today
0:16 I am very thankful that there was a
0:19 convenience store out here it's my
0:22 second channel daily vlog channel coffee
0:24 is or
0:43 there are quite a few no trespassing
0:43 signs but directly over this lock gate
0:46 there's something pretty fantastic not
0:50 made from wood like you traditionally
0:53 normally see this one's made of rock or
0:56 concrete perhaps can't get any closer
0:59 the sign States due to vandalism and
1:01 theft you must have written oh look
1:03 there was another one there the sign
1:05 sits on top of another broken one you
1:08 have to think about how much time and
1:09 effort went into whittling away at that
1:11 thing and that's not timber that's a
1:13 much much more heavy substance down this
1:17 little road lies Johnson Canyon the Old
1:20 West is straight ahead at least what was
1:25 depicted on television westerns were
1:27 very popular in the nineteen thirties
1:28 forties fifties sixties and into the
1:31 seventies and a lot of them were filmed
1:33 out here on this open terrain in fact
1:38 what appears to be a real-life ghost
1:40 town is really a production set for some
1:44 of those old serials not the kind you
1:46 eat but the kind you watch no it has
1:49 been quite a while since actors or a
1:51 crew have set foot out here but these
1:54 facades have been used in quite a few
1:57 things you may have seen on TV the most
2:00 popular reference being Gunsmoke which
2:02 ran for an almost unprecedented by
2:05 today's standards 20 years and they used
2:09 some of these buildings now the majority
2:10 of the show was not even filmed out here
2:14 as best I could research there were only
2:16 a couple times that this was used for
2:20 Dodge City but nonetheless pretty
2:23 freakin cool
2:24 if this unstructured soundstage and
2:26 walls could talk it would tell us that
2:28 people were dancing and playing poker
2:31 right over in that corner marshal Dillon
2:34 could have sat in that very chair it's a
2:37 big hypothetical but maybe now keep in
2:40 mind this was used in dozens of other
2:42 productions and what stands out to me
2:45 when I think of cowboys I think of the
2:47 saloon and the doors that you would walk
2:50 through right into that the ambience of
2:52 this place really
2:54 suits it well because walking around
2:58 here is slightly dangerous just look at
3:02 the floor
3:03 the Glatt broken glass the holes leading
3:07 well it's not it's only like a foot down
3:09 but still you could twist an ankle you
3:11 can see the theming of the old windows
3:13 up there and look closely there's a
3:15 wooden ledge that goes around the
3:16 perimeter of the roof I'm guessing for
3:19 the cameraman to sit on this ladder
3:22 climbing it would be quite unwise the
3:26 more I think about it somewhat of my
3:28 weight trouncing around on this
3:31 decomposing floor meandering over there
3:35 probably not a good idea either I
3:37 attempted to use my Columbo like
3:38 research skills to find some screenshots
3:40 and match up the buildings but nothing
3:44 really completely is accurate the front
3:46 door of the hotel even these little
3:48 slats of wood and the awning in front of
3:51 the bar completely different than photos
3:54 I found online which makes me think the
3:56 couple times it was used for Gunsmoke
3:59 was probably for pickup shots or maybe
4:01 some later episodes now keep in mind
4:03 these were not real homes which means
4:06 this fireplace was specifically built to
4:09 film a scene there were actors
4:12 delivering their lines right there now
4:15 it's just a congregation of ticks red
4:17 ants and snakes
4:19 oh yeah and cow patties can't forget
4:22 about the cow patties a lot of the
4:23 facades have decomposed due to the
4:25 elements over time this I thought was a
4:29 fallen house but upon closer inspection
4:32 I think it was a mine shaft set judging
4:35 by how low it goes into the ground and
4:38 these rocks that's the best thing I
4:40 could assume I do see why they use this
4:43 location with the backdrop of the
4:45 mountains this was the church building
4:48 or maybe a school a lot of flies out
4:52 here buzzing around the roof has seen
4:57 better days Oh check it out people have
5:01 inscribed their names some of them
5:02 dating back to 1977 86
5:06 82 upon further thought process I don't
5:09 know what this was specifically used for
5:11 the outside totally does not match the
5:16 interiors when it comes to theming
5:18 indoors you could have documented a
5:20 family hanging out around the fireplace
5:22 or cooking a meal on this stove but
5:26 outside a totally different vibe
5:30 altogether and I first heard of this
5:32 place and the fact that it still
5:33 moderately kind of existed I knew I
5:36 needed to come out here simply because a
5:38 couple more storms and these will all be
5:41 on the ground in reality I'm kind of
5:44 amazed that some of them lasted as long
5:47 as they did relics of the past left to
5:51 rot memories of a bygone era the golden
5:55 age of television I was reading an
5:57 article about a man who used to own the
5:59 property many many many years ago who
6:01 was restoring those buildings obviously
6:03 that did not come to fruition that he
6:06 was promoting the property as the town
6:08 from Gunsmoke when in reality that's
6:11 only moderately true if you take into
6:18 consideration that Gunsmoke ran for two
6:21 decades and most of the people there
6:24 were stars on it were celebrities as the
6:27 show got more and more popular
6:29 they lived in California most of the
6:32 episodes filmed out near Los Angeles
6:38 some a few that were filmed here in Utah
6:41 were over where I just was and some of
6:44 the others are about five or ten miles
6:47 up the road pretty interesting I really
6:52 would like to know which season and
6:54 which episodes were filmed at that
6:57 abandoned set I mean someone's got to
7:00 know look at that mural said dot it is
7:03 Don Knotts and Tim Conway are on there
7:06 there's just no coincidence because the
7:07 Apple Dumpling gang rides again was
7:09 filmed in this neck of the woods not
7:10 where I just was but what I mentioned
7:12 that's up the road as well as The Outlaw
7:14 Josey Wales Clint Eastwood who knew all
7:17 this took place Oh
7:18 all the way out here check it out I
7:20 think I found the first photo that
7:22 matches up where I just was the windows
7:25 the awning the porch everything is the
7:29 same that's that holy cow that's where
7:32 I'm located right now where the star is
7:35 this shows the general terrain of this
7:39 whole area inside the tourist info
7:41 center they gave me a list of
7:43 productions that have been going on here
7:45 since 1924 I recognize a few of these
7:48 names as being filmed in Los Angeles for
7:51 example the Lone Ranger Rock is in LA
7:54 but a lot of the episodes were out in
7:57 this area
7:58 the dude Ranger dude ranger maybe this
8:04 place could shed a little light on the
8:06 subject little Hollywood Museum and
8:09 trading post this was used in a music
8:12 video by Kenny Loggins in 1991 from the
8:17 Grand Canyon it was the backdrop when he
8:20 was playing the song the fascinating
8:22 thing is what I'm standing and currently
8:24 is the real set he rode right by here on
8:31 his horse of course they've moved it
8:32 from its original location but
8:34 nonetheless
8:34 it's the actual one this cabin was used
8:37 at a 1973 Disney comedy starring Jodie
8:41 Foster and James Garner called one
8:45 little Indian there it is this was the
8:48 barn also used in Josie Wells since the
8:53 movie was made the property was sold and
8:55 they got permission to move everything
8:58 to where it now resides they have even
9:01 created a little makeshift Cemetery now
9:05 there are no graves below my feet but
9:07 there is a wooden cutout of John Wayne
9:11 there's a new sheriff in town
9:13 and I'm looking for the man that
9:15 decapitated my friends over to the side
9:19 of me
9:19 they have no heads just to show you a
9:21 little behind the scenes movie magic
9:25 that's styrofoam and to get a closer
9:28 look here's one piece that's completely
9:31 on
9:32 so if there was a fight scene let's say
9:34 this was a chunk of wood you could hit
9:36 someone over and over and over it kind
9:40 of hurts a little bit but not as much as
9:41 it would see what I did there would not
9:45 as much as it would not shall Libre if
9:48 you have ever been in the market for
9:50 John Wayne toilet paper this is the
9:53 place to buy it some very interesting
9:56 stuff in there not a lot of info on what
9:58 I was looking for but this designates
10:00 that they filmed in the 60s
10:02 that means the 50s era and 70s era of
10:06 Gunsmoke was not filmed out here I'm on
10:11 my way now to the location of where the
10:12 bigger of the two movie ranches they
10:14 used to reside in this area was the
10:17 other place which still had some
10:18 structures was the smaller of the two
10:20 this spot supposedly has nothing left
10:23 it sits down at the bottom of angel
10:25 canyon to look closely up there on the
10:28 hillside in that cave there are chunks
10:30 of wood maybe a former set or a cabin
10:33 that once was up there the property has
10:35 been bought by an animal shelter but
10:37 just looking at those hills you can
10:39 definitely see why they chose this spot
10:42 to film so many different shows and move
10:46 breathtaking scenery to say the least
10:50 what a view we're now venturing onto a
10:53 very bumpy dirt road and search of a few
10:57 other items I can't get over this
10:59 scenery it's incredible
11:03 not the best driving conditions for
11:05 Large Marge but it's worth it
11:08 it's definitely based on the view
11:13 definitely worth the Wow take a look at
11:16 that
11:17 remember the Jodie Foster Disney movie I
11:20 was mentioning earlier and they moved
11:22 one of the pieces to that little Museum
11:25 that's the barn that's the actual barn
11:28 still in the same spot and they're using
11:31 it current day as a horse corral this
11:33 cave area was used in the 1950s movie
11:38 about The Lone Ranger as tantos hideout
11:42 and if you look closely they painted
11:45 inscriptions on the side of the wall
11:48 that are not real basically just props
11:52 for the production and they are still
11:56 here half a century later these are not
12:00 relics real relics these were put here
12:04 by the crew to make it look more
12:08 authentic for filming who knew this was
12:11 out here I sure didn't until today you
12:14 learn something new all the time and
12:17 what do you know it's listed on the
12:18 sheet 1956 that's awesome
12:43 it's got me thinking I really like to
12:43 know what exact opposite of season and
12:46 episode numbers of Gunsmoke were filmed
12:50 out of Johnson ranch here in Utah I'm
12:52 sure you're curious as well and if you
12:54 use your Columbo like research skills
12:57 and figure that out leave some comments
13:00 down below because not only i but also
13:02 others and i'm sure you are interested
13:05 in knowing what was filmed in california
13:07 what was filming utah specifically what
13:09 was filmed in those abandoned buildings
