0:03 today's adventure begins the truck pulls

0:04 the downtown area of concord north
0:07 carolina
0:08 as a recording of this wednesday
0:10 february second
0:12 groundhog day as a recording of this
0:15 and i'm here with carolina tony
0:18 is there going to be more how many more
0:19 weeks of winter is there going to be did
0:20 you see the groundhog this morning this
0:22 morning what was the consensus more
0:24 weeks six more weeks of winter
0:31 you could have guessed it yeah cause
0:31 there's six more weeks of winter anyway
0:32 you look at it
0:34 we're right here next to this
0:36 classic 1966 mural
0:39 at the scotty store
0:42 oh there goes some hay going by
0:49 scotty stores 1966 obviously this has
0:49 been repurposed a few years ago and
0:50 cleaned up but it still has that
0:53 1966 vibe
0:55 do the intro i'm inviting you to join me
0:57 and
1:02 the one and only
1:02 carolina town yeah
1:04 shall you oh wait let's do it again
1:10 take two i'm not gonna edit that out
1:10 join me and the one and only carolina
1:13 tony and we're just gonna go around
1:14 start in concord and just peruse around
1:16 some small towns cover a lot of miles
1:17 gonna hop in your truck
1:19 and you can be my chauffeur and we'll
1:21 get out on a highway and with carolina
1:22 tony you gotta do the shall you
1:25 join me carolina tony
1:31 shall you nail it and while there's no
1:31 traffic going by just stepping back here
1:33 for one moment and just show this and
1:35 all
1:36 its glory
1:37 that's enough i gotta get back out of
1:38 the road
1:39 gonna get back out of the road
1:42 things go better with coca-cola
1:45 look at this this is a thing of beauty
1:48 right here the artist's name was hampton
1:50 back on 5 24
1:52 1966
1:55 that she has a look of joy
1:57 on her face one that cannot be
1:59 replicated by any other
2:01 beverage except perhaps a piping hot
2:05 caffeinated beverage
2:06 there's a coffee shop right behind me
2:08 have acquired a piping hot caffeinated
2:11 beverage from press and porter
2:13 established 2019 just a few years ago
2:16 coffee and poor house
2:19 it was kind of reasonable i did not go
2:20 poor poor house i did not go poor in
2:23 this house from purchasing this and you
2:25 went with
2:26 not a pot you went with a cool cobra a
2:28 cold brew cool crisp cold brew peppers
2:31 it's called nitro nitro is it strong
2:34 a little kick to it i'm gonna be jacked
2:35 up in a minute now it appears as if the
2:37 courthouse or maybe the former
2:39 courthouse is obscured by this foliage
2:42 good thing we walked down this way
2:43 because here is another
2:46 coca-cola mural five cent relieves
2:48 fatigue which is an advertisement they
2:50 used to use back in the day not only
2:52 delicious and refreshing
2:53 this is a little bit newer this was not
2:55 this is not back from 66 this is
2:57 probably a little newer maybe a
2:59 made to look like a retro relic
3:01 still pretty beautiful nonetheless you
3:02 see there's a lot of new construction
3:04 around here too and i always say this is
3:05 a little more difficult than wheel of
3:07 fortune
3:08 because you only get certain letters you
3:10 got a ca and a vw so probably the world
3:14 something in the world but it's been
3:15 painted over
3:17 through here so your guess
3:19 is
3:23 now through here
3:24 one of a handful
3:26 of whataburgers not the texas chain
3:29 but there are a few of those around
3:30 north carolina and they have numbers on
3:32 them
3:38 i'm excited to see one of the handful of
3:38 north carolina whataburgers not
3:39 affiliated with the chain
3:42 with the silhouette of the water tower
3:44 in the distance yeah take a look at this
3:47 you can enjoy cherry lemon sun drop but
3:50 also underneath that star which kind of
3:52 reminds me of carl's jr it's not another
3:54 fast food establishment what a burger
3:57 and that the only difference in the name
4:00 from the texas version
4:02 totally different affiliation this is
4:03 more of a locally owned place is the
4:05 dash the other one's in mooresville
4:06 right is that am i saying that correctly
4:08 mooresville
4:09 yeah so we should head over there yeah
4:11 and have a burger a little later yeah
4:13 baby
4:17 that's what the burger looks like right
4:17 there i think that's a pickle on top of
4:18 that the city of concord bicentennial
4:21 time capsule back from 1997 that's
4:23 probably when it was placed there no
4:26 indication of when that's going to be
4:27 open
4:28 however that spit looks fresh though
4:32 and just next to that
4:35 here off main street
4:37 is a mural titled off main street
4:40 this is a lot newer this was put here
4:42 back in 2013. also noticing over here
4:45 you see the church steeple there
4:47 but right here where the address says 24
4:50 cab
4:52 is the old concord telephone
4:55 shown here by this painting down this
4:58 alley
5:00 1897 it started and
5:02 disbanded in 1987
5:06 as shown right up here
5:08 and next to their mailboxes is a
5:10 telephone right above the outgoing mail
5:11 slot here's another one
5:14 maybe a jewelry store it looks like
5:17 guys just proposed to his future wife
5:20 or just someone that's really excited to
5:22 have that that's a very oversized ring
5:24 now i gotta hop in i was gonna say hop
5:26 in the back
5:27 but i'm gonna hop in the carolina tony
5:29 mobile drove about a half hour well
5:31 probably 20 minutes up the way to
5:34 kannapolis you see the kannapolis water
5:36 tower and train station this is the
5:38 hometown of
5:40 race car legend dale earnhardt
5:43 these are very peculiar very futuristic
5:46 it's called a bike lid
5:52 amtrak
5:52 has the amtrak logo on the side of it
6:00 carol carolinian carolinian is that how
6:00 you pronounce that girlanian carolinian
6:03 made by amtrak it's like
6:06 you put this over the top of a bicycle
6:09 right
6:11 i don't know i'm just guessing now
6:14 how to use a como used car
6:17 bike lid it's a bike lid motorcycle
6:21 oh look at that park your bicycle in
6:23 here
6:24 the faint sounds of that siren going by
6:26 here at the tribute plaza
6:28 what were you saying you think that they
6:30 they alerted the authorities because you
6:31 lifted that bike lid yeah
6:34 now you fake you never know you never
6:36 know why you said that you you have been
6:38 in a race car before right
6:40 where did you race a car uh lowe's motor
6:43 speedway lowe's motor speed has been
6:45 called everything a awesome couple
6:47 bojangles charlotte motor speedway
6:50 charlotte motor speedway i did 160 miles
6:52 an hour
6:53 that's pretty neat that was i will tell
6:55 you the most awesome thing i've ever
6:57 done in my life
7:02 whenever i think of race car driving i
7:02 think of tom cruise
7:06 days of thunder
7:08 do you ever see days of thunder i am
7:11 that was filmed in north carolina yeah
7:14 i call that
7:15 top gun in a race car
7:17 basically almost the same plot
7:19 but just in a race car
7:21 and there's no maverick no one named
7:23 maverick
7:25 you're my favorite one
7:27 my favorite race car movie i'm on fire
7:29 i'm on fire
7:31 ricky bobby oh
7:33 talladega nights and just a couple
7:35 blocks away from where we just were
7:38 is this very fantastic marquee at the
7:41 gym theater with the neon still an
7:43 active
7:44 theater still in business you got a
7:47 little batman poster over there
7:55 national register of historic places
7:55 love when things end up on the national
7:57 register 1936 and then also down here
8:00 the tile work
8:01 and this has seen some years
8:03 in fact the door that goes into the
8:11 look at that look at that old-timey
8:11 register down there
8:17 this is a relic
8:17 current attraction is rated pg this is
8:19 like looks like it's something from the
8:20 80s right here kind of stepped over here
8:22 just to give an angle from across the
8:24 road
8:25 appears to be someone inside to see if
8:27 we can get in and take a peek on what is
8:29 inside
8:31 this historic place wow
8:33 it's open
8:37 check this out
8:37 and it appears as if they are running a
8:39 matinee at the moment and there's one or
8:41 two people inside the theater all right
8:43 that place is awesome
8:46 completely
8:48 non-modernized is that the word you use
8:49 non-modernized
8:52 i would say so i thought you coined that
8:55 term
9:01 look at this this reminds me of old
9:01 hollywood
9:03 this gives me that old hollywood vibes
9:05 and now pulling into landis
9:08 water tower of landis right there next
9:10 to the tracks and small little downtown
9:12 and it looks like there's a mural over
9:14 there notice the sign up here says the
9:16 lawyer's office
9:18 but before it was that it was known as
9:20 the lin brothers busy store dating back
9:22 to 1901
9:24 still has the etching on the window
9:26 right there
9:27 used to be a general store yes it's
9:29 called the busy store the lynn brothers
9:31 store so atlantis
9:33 was
9:35 what was the thing was it was the
9:37 the factory is that what
9:39 made the town
9:45 so textiles
9:45 and i'm sure there's a depot somewhere
9:52 that's pretty neat the busy store still
9:52 had the coca-cola signage
9:55 okay on the front of those
9:57 those doors thank you
10:04 this is guys now oh where's the where's
10:04 the old jail
10:12 i believe that's a depot sure is we
10:12 should walk over there too and just
10:13 across the way within eye view of
10:16 the depot
10:19 is the post office there off in the
10:20 distance a lot of times you'll see these
10:21 depots little relics of the past without
10:23 the tracks
10:25 tracks have been pulled up you think
10:26 they moved it
10:28 that's what she said
10:30 she said they moved the i thought that
10:32 was a snake at first but it's a stick
10:35 okay so she said they moved the depot
10:38 okay
10:39 the foundation so i was guessing wrong
10:42 but check that foundation out though
10:45 look at it how crooked it is
10:56 you can see where the ramp used to be
11:07 can't see too much in there
11:07 oh you know what the tracks are over
11:10 there yeah okay we passed those on the
11:12 way in
11:14 so they moved it from over there on that
11:16 side of the water tower now remember
11:17 there were tracks when we first pulled
11:18 in here looks to be an old stove in
11:21 there
11:22 as well i'm peeking through the window
11:24 as i pull the camera back you'll be able
11:26 to see the glare of the water tower
11:28 behind me see
11:35 that was a neat effect
11:35 unintentional but it kind of works
11:38 there's my shadow
11:40 you want to test the water
11:42 you want to do the honors
11:50 uh
11:50 you got to pump it down
11:52 no nothing that's kind of fun oh it's a
11:54 different kind of pop yeah
11:56 cut-offs down in the ground
11:58 it's a no freeze pump
12:01 an old freeze pump well
12:04 you want some explanation how it works
12:06 yeah
12:07 the valve that cuts the water off is
12:09 underground
12:11 and if it wasn't during the winter all
12:13 this would freeze you won't be able to
12:15 get water out
12:16 so when you open this it pulls a rod up
12:18 down below and the water flows out and
12:21 when you cut it off the water goes back
12:23 down so therefore there's no water if it
12:25 was working there'd be no water in this
12:27 part so it couldn't freeze okay
12:29 interesting
12:30 you taught me something new it's cause
12:32 i've milked cows for eight years i know
12:34 all that stuff it's the same technique
12:36 as melting milking a cow
12:42 yeah no train horn if a train did go
12:42 through here
12:44 you're just kind of taking your chances
12:45 you got to be very aware and look both
12:47 ways i thought it meant if you have one
12:49 in your car don't blow it well that too
12:52 it's just up the ways a couple miles
12:54 china grove
12:56 still have not seen
12:57 an active train going by here
13:01 i'm noticing over here was a a billiards
13:05 parlor you could faintly make out the
13:07 advertisement that says billiards or no
13:09 ballards there's three advertisements
13:11 here you got the
13:13 bostian mercantile company
13:16 you have this one here called
13:18 patterson's
13:20 guessing that says patterson's
13:22 right there and then the the far one
13:24 down here either says ballards or
13:26 billiards
13:36 yeah i think that's ballard's barely
13:36 could make it out
13:38 this you could somewhat make it out
13:42 this was just a little better
13:51 some nice little relics here corner of
13:51 west thom street and south main
13:54 this is kind of a unique building with
13:56 the storefronts
13:57 place called coleman music that is
13:59 closed down right over there
14:01 it's kind of a neat little apartment
14:02 around the back
14:03 with the wooden staircases here
14:06 kind of decomposing
14:11 fall again
14:12 but take a look at this around the back
14:18 this is tucked away around the back of
14:19 those storefronts
14:22 right here
14:28 does not appear to be lived in
14:28 or being lived in
14:36 now here is the downtown proper
14:36 i'm gonna pull over and just see what we
14:38 can see
14:48 a lot of
14:48 general stores through here
14:51 with the signage there
14:53 this antique signage
14:55 in front
14:59 and the brickwork there
15:01 seen some years
15:08 ah definitely a main street usa vibe
15:08 through here hello
15:11 look at the
15:13 on the wall
15:15 just a little bit
15:17 i'm thinking of ace ventura too right
15:19 now quote from aceventure too
15:21 take a look
15:22 got a jackalope up there
15:26 if these things start talking i'm gonna
15:27 have some country bear jamboree vibes
15:29 going on
15:31 oh my gosh
15:33 this is right here in a store up on the
15:35 store shelves wow
15:38 look at all these says no right turn
15:41 train
15:42 and the train is about to pull through
15:50 holy cow that's moving that's right
15:50 and it's gone
15:53 just like that
15:54 that was a fast-moving train
16:00 it's a candy shop there on the corner
16:00 it's been there for a long time
16:03 a little boutique
16:05 insurance agency a pizza place a grill
16:08 and a place called miller hotel down
16:10 there on the end oh could it be
16:12 could
16:14 could it be
16:15 well there's a cheerwine down there
16:17 adam gets excited when we see phone it
16:20 don't work it doesn't work anymore
16:24 you very rarely will see them though
16:26 even you'll see the shell
16:28 the skeleton but you won't see the yeah
16:38 four minutes
16:40 four minutes very cool
16:42 so it's been unplugged that's a relic
16:44 all right
16:46 there is no
16:48 dial tone on this no dial time at all
16:51 but still i'm holding a pay phone oh
16:54 it's the little things
16:56 look at that look at this right next to
16:58 the paypal
17:00 drink cheerwine
17:09 cheerwine was invented
17:09 right up the road in salisbury
17:12 is that where the steak was also
17:13 invented the steak salisbury steak
17:16 another stop on the national register of
17:19 historic places
17:21 built back in 1895 this roller mill
17:33 this is a thing of beauty right here
17:33 also had chat and dog food
17:36 or maybe it's chatham feeds
17:39 flour
17:40 meal and feeds
17:47 ah this is nice it's closed now but peek
17:47 it in the window here you can still they
17:49 see they have parts of the mill itself
17:51 the working parts in there
17:54 this is a museum that's open sometimes
17:55 but today it's not open
17:58 just kind of peeking in the window here
18:00 that's cool yeah
18:02 all right there you go oh watch out
18:03 there's someone in the window right
18:08 there's a farmer in there
18:08 i saw him oh
18:10 oh you good i'm good
18:13 how was how was your swing it was it was
18:16 a it was a blast it didn't fly over you
18:18 poop on your head
18:19 what are you talking about you didn't
18:21 see it you're talking about the little
18:23 spikes above the swing at the top of the
18:24 swing right a little spike sticking up
18:27 and keep pigeons from pooping on your
18:30 head
18:31 you don't want the pigeons to defecate
18:34 while you're on enjoying the time on the
18:35 swing
18:39 right up there
18:45 let me zoom in on those
18:45 it's to stop pigeons yeah the pigeon
18:47 poop is pretty spectacular i don't know
18:50 it's not even a work that's a tongue
18:51 twister
18:59 and that tire was definitely flat
18:59 on that truck you can hear that flat
19:01 tire driving down the road
19:04 here's the old town hall jail door also
19:06 noticing here on the edge of town
19:09 this is
19:10 an old theater as well you can see where
19:12 the marquee used to be that architecture
19:15 the
19:16 coming attractions of what movies were
19:18 going to be playing would be glued right
19:20 up here on the side of the window with
19:22 the lights yeah look at this
19:26 right there this whole theater
19:29 oh yeah
19:30 marquee would have been right there
19:32 and here's where they would have had the
19:33 movie posters
19:36 as well
19:53 brought something to my pants that i
19:53 will actually do
19:55 this appears to be china
19:57 old movies
19:59 still on our way
20:02 to whataburger
20:04 and as we're just cruising along
20:07 keith's auto sales this building
20:10 is a relic wow look at that architecture
20:12 that's awesome
20:28 stuck in a little bit of traffic not too
20:28 bad though
20:44 oh they're putting the whole transformer
20:44 up there
20:46 look at that
20:59 pretty cool
20:59 well behind the scenes of how the power
21:01 grids power lines work and just pulling
21:03 into town there's a ford mercury dealer
21:06 over here the advertisement still on the
21:08 side kind of painted on the side
21:15 just waiting on this light to change
21:15 almost to the next destination
21:36 designated whataburger drive-in number
21:36 11
21:37 and this has
21:39 quite an amazing piece
21:41 of architecture
21:43 with the style of it look at that
21:45 welcome to whataburger
21:50 yeah yeah
21:50 i haven't had a hamburger in a while i
21:52 don't know if i've had a hamburger since
21:54 in 2022
21:56 wow i've been i've been kind of on a
21:59 little bit of a weight loss journey be
22:01 careful you might be a hamburger
22:04 gotta get out of the way let's drive in
22:06 this retro looking drive-in
22:10 yeah but eating pretty well
22:12 but i think i'm gonna have i have a
22:13 little cheat day get myself a burger
22:15 because when in rome
22:22 this is awesome look at this this old
22:22 signage
22:43 i'm gonna get a hamburger
22:43 went ahead and walked inside
22:46 we have an atm over here
22:48 for those who need cash and this is the
22:50 front counter over there they're making
22:51 the burgers
22:52 right behind it
22:54 got an old photograph there
22:56 of the owners
22:58 el and cw boss
23:05 and this is what we're dealing with look
23:05 at this
23:06 a tasty treat
23:09 tastiest treat in town
23:11 got concord
23:13 kannapolis and there must only be three
23:15 of them left even though they're
23:16 numbered
23:18 differently yeah this is number 11.
23:20 there must only be three left of the 11
23:23 or 12 original ones got the toothpick
23:25 and remove the toothpick and just see
23:28 what this looks like inside this this is
23:30 like a little souvenir this little
23:35 oh they put the pickle on top i think
23:35 i've ever seen that with a pickle on top
23:37 like that
23:38 you can see there's the photo of it
23:40 there's the pickle
23:41 kind of see what's going on down in
23:43 there decent sized
23:45 patty got some mustard just like i like
23:48 it
23:48 lettuce tomato
23:52 fry down in there
23:53 you eat it with the pickle on top or do
23:55 you put the
23:56 i'm gonna put the pickle on it
23:58 just about like that
24:00 and see what all this hype is enough
24:10 pretty good
24:12 it's tasty

28:33 into concord with the concord water
28:36 tower
28:37 over off to the side
28:39 and i've done a full circle around some
28:41 of these small towns
28:49 and have made it back
28:52 to this mural
28:56 where it
28:56 began same one here at the scotty store
29:27 we saw a lot of these

29:51 not only tow truck town
29:51 but also a parking ticket town
29:53 i had three hours to park in the parking
29:55 structure over there they don't charge
29:57 you to park two hours street parking we
29:59 were gone a little longer than three
30:01 hours

30:19 admission to a parking structure
30:21 and then going in here and parking it's
30:23 not the case there's all street parking
30:25 here in town
30:26 but thankfully talked to an officer
30:28 that's in here and he said i could pay
30:30 in cash i'm going to go over here past
30:32 the city hall
30:33 and go ahead and take care of because
30:34 they do not accept credit cards online
30:37 we're just gonna walk over here and and
30:39 take care of this
30:40 parking ticket
30:43 just real quick
30:44 yeah it's like the smallest little
30:47 golf cart that goes around
30:54 they must they must mark tires i think
30:54 we're probably only gone for what three
30:55 and a half hours
30:56 there was a three hour limit
30:58 i guess we could have probably should
30:59 have got back a little quicker all right
31:01 i got my receipt here
31:04 i have paid my debt to society
31:11 oh

31:21 i'll always remember this parking
31:23 structure
31:24 be wary anyone
31:26 three hours they mark tires
31:29 and they will give you a ticket here in
31:30 concord
