0:03 today's adventure begins with a red
0:03 self-pumping gas nozzle
0:07 4.95
0:13 per gallon
0:13 but this very
0:15 uniquely named
0:18 convenience store welcome everyone
0:20 yet in the woo here as a recording of
0:22 this thursday june 16 2022 i probably
0:25 shouldn't have not taken that step
0:27 because it's really close
0:29 to that ledge
0:31 well not a ledge but just a little
0:33 little dip down into the river
0:36 i am on my way to denver colorado no
0:39 real rhyme reason or and or game plan
0:42 today other than hopefully finding some
0:43 roadside relics some wacky items
0:46 on my journey into denver
0:49 and looking at some mountains
0:55 all around me even
0:55 back there
0:56 behind the gas station
0:59 moving pretty quickly this river is
1:01 moving pretty quick
1:03 if you fell in there you'd be swept down
1:05 the river
1:11 as always i'm inviting you to join me
1:11 see how this tastes
1:16 it's warm
1:16 join me shall you i'm also hoping to get
1:19 on some back roads well i kind of am on
1:21 the back road i veered off the main
1:22 thoroughfare the main freeway well
1:24 highway over there
1:26 and the next town
1:28 i hope to get some back roads and small
1:29 town stuff as well as some odd unusual
1:32 things now the name of this little
1:33 downtown area is glenwood springs but
1:35 also
1:36 referred to as hot springs
1:38 cooper avenue was the main street and
1:41 like where they have these little
1:42 information placards like eb everett's
1:44 pioneer grocery used to be right here on
1:46 this corner
1:48 back in 1886 he replaced the tent with a
1:50 brick store this is a dismount zone
1:54 never heard it referred to as that
1:55 usually it says no skating or biking but
1:57 it says dismount zone
2:00 it's a lot of neat history right here in
2:02 this little downtown
2:04 pretty good view of the mountain too for
2:06 example of course the door is closed the
2:08 store's not open at the moment and the
2:09 door is
2:10 looking in usually this door is
2:12 kind of swung open over here
2:14 but this is where doc holliday
2:18 had his last moments
2:20 november 8th 1887.
2:34 here in
2:34 glenwood springs
2:37 so your time up there is 20 minutes
2:39 until 10.
2:40 it's now a place called bullocks
2:44 but this is where doc holliday spent his
2:46 last moments
2:48 in this building
2:57 getting over to this section was a
2:58 little confusing
2:59 i turned onto this road thinking i'd be
3:01 able to park over here and this ends up
3:03 going to a roundabout which got me back
3:05 on the main road
3:07 so i ended up having to go up a mile or
3:09 two turn around and come back
3:11 if this was the original downtown and i
3:13 would imagine there was an older bridge
3:15 that was replaced with this one a little
3:17 less confusing but i ended up
3:20 turning back around i was patient found
3:22 my way around
3:23 and looped back over
3:25 to the
3:27 doc john holiday tavern here
3:31 this whole neon
3:32 i really love this relic
3:40 look at that thing glimmering in the
3:40 morning sun
3:50 and next door is a barber shop hole
3:54 nice little relic here
3:56 all falling about apart the wood
3:58 starting to decay just a little bit
4:00 but you could see the years
4:02 of weather worn on the paint
4:04 what used to be the barber shop here
4:06 it's now a newer hair salon but they
4:08 still have the barber pole up front yeah
4:10 take a look how the main street
4:16 this newer road kind of veers up and
4:16 obscures and blocks
4:18 the old downtown
4:20 it's kind of unusual i don't know if it
4:22 hurts or helps the businesses
4:25 not knowing that
4:26 you know you can't just
4:28 can't just park in front of the stores
4:30 anymore
4:31 ah progress
4:47 and around back in this alley
4:47 there's a little little painting mural
4:49 here
4:56 started to
4:56 kind of
4:57 be scraped off the side of the wall
5:05 up for artistic interpretation on what
5:05 this says oh you know what
5:08 my well it looks like
5:10 a stream going through the mountains and
5:12 clouds okay that's that's what it is
5:14 from this angle it
5:16 makes a little more sense
5:17 the name of this exit was no name
5:22 and i missed the sign pull it in here
5:25 luckily the rest stop says the name
5:33 well i should say no name
5:33 no name
5:35 rest area the rest area with no name
5:39 just some incredible views in this area
5:41 of the country
5:43 people riding their bikes down there on
5:44 the path
5:46 little picnic table set up
5:49 this foot
5:51 path
5:53 worn from
5:54 many
5:55 people's shoes walking over the years
5:57 heading down to the waterway
6:33 very peaceful out here you could do a
6:33 little bird watching
6:36 there's a bird right there
6:39 okay see you later bird uh bird went and
6:41 perched over there on the picnic table
6:43 then also down here
6:47 are a few folks on the river itself in
6:49 those rafts
6:51 the white water rafting
6:59 and just a little further up the way to
6:59 another rest area
7:01 sign said grizzly creek
7:03 once i got over here this
7:05 little information saying from vision to
7:07 reality glenwood canyon has been a link
7:10 to the nation's ground transportation
7:12 since the denver and grand
7:15 rio grande railroad back in 1887
7:18 and there's some historical photos here
7:21 what it looked like back in the day look
7:23 at the train going through the caverns
7:25 there
7:30 this little structure looks like
7:30 something that frank lloyd wright would
7:32 have built
7:36 also a bridge over here should be able
7:36 to get a pretty good view of the
7:37 waterway
7:39 so
7:46 awesome so notice how this stream
7:46 veers out of the mountains
7:48 up there got the
7:50 on-ramp off-ramp
7:52 main road going by
7:57 and then
7:57 dumps into the river
8:48 i almost lost my footing just then
8:48 the butterfly
8:54 standing on this rock you see others
8:54 have stacked
9:03 these tunnels go directly through the
9:03 middle of the mountains
9:05 pretty fascinating
9:06 the engineering that goes into this
9:09 so you're kind of in the
9:11 shadows and now about to go back outside
9:14 into the brightness
9:17 stopped off in the town of gypsum now
9:20 i like this church this is a lutheran
9:22 church
9:23 and this structure is very unique as
9:25 well it has like a little observation
9:27 tower
9:28 up top there and an ostrich piece of art
9:31 around the side
9:38 there's the ostrich
9:38 there's the observation tower
9:51 hello ostrich
9:51 metal ostrich
9:54 so metal a lot of times i'll get into
9:56 these little communities trying to find
9:57 some of the original structures
9:59 like this there's a sign there so some
10:01 sort of store
10:02 maybe a bar at one point on the corner
10:04 of first avenue
10:06 and railroad ave there's railroad tracks
10:08 right over there
10:28 this is the eagle information center
10:28 visitor center
10:29 eagle
10:30 colorado there's also a historical
10:33 museum located in this barn
10:36 as well
10:37 right here along the river also
10:40 old train car the rio grande
10:43 so can i go up in this
11:20 back door another waft here you got the
11:20 stairs you can go up and get a
11:22 little higher up perspective
11:25 when you're on the train
11:57 okay this post office
11:57 there's a stick down here first i like
12:00 i felt it i was like i hope that's not a
12:01 snake but it wasn't a snake
12:04 this mine not my car next to the my car
12:06 is this post office
12:08 from the town of avon colorado
12:12 probably relocated they got the
12:13 sprinklers on out here and there's a
12:15 blacksmith shop over there as well
12:24 see what's inside
12:24 some old theater seats here
12:27 as well as a stove
12:30 and some sort of
12:33 cooking mechanism
12:38 or maybe a washing machine looks like a
12:38 big ice you know
12:40 ice cream
12:42 hand ice cream machine but i believe
12:44 it's probably for washing clothes
12:56 we've got some church pews in here as
12:56 well be tough to see through these
12:58 windows because of the glare
13:00 there are some artifacts over in there
13:09 got a pie down there
13:09 some cupboards from an old homestead
13:12 an ironing board
13:18 and some items you could find back in
13:18 the back in the good old days
13:21 in a general store
13:42 quite an assortment of items there the
13:42 train going by through avon is an
13:44 overhead photo from the 1950s
13:47 it's another photo from the 50s
13:49 this is really cool this is from the
13:50 1920s
13:52 this is the avon store in the 1920s
13:56 100
13:57 plus years ago
14:00 incredible
14:01 there's another cart here on the rails
14:04 go inside the blacksmith shop now
14:24 a few items
14:24 we make the horseshoes down there
14:31 it says forge owned and operated by
14:31 emmett
14:32 nottingham and avon
14:36 in the old west of course i think of
14:38 back to future three dr emmett brown
14:41 that wasn't emma brown's another emma
14:42 but the old west 1885
14:45 up on that hillside looks to be an old
14:47 cabin
14:48 a homestead
14:50 way up there on the on the peak
14:53 it's just kind of teetering there
15:15 got a lot of rapids through here going
15:15 underneath that railroad trestle
15:17 i did have to dodge those sprinklers
15:20 i was trying to go into the blacksmith
15:21 shop
15:23 in the post office
15:25 that's where the walkway was the
15:26 sprinklers were trying to get me
15:28 i'm gonna go inside the barn now this
15:29 free museum free admission to set on the
15:31 side and here's a general layout of the
15:33 land i am over here
15:35 an eagle
15:36 which shows elevation six thousand six
15:38 hundred feet but you can see some of the
15:41 other mountainous regions yes before
15:43 even before calculators and then now of
15:45 course with smartphones that have
15:46 calculators on them
15:48 there were
15:49 adding machines
15:52 very
15:53 bulky adding machine almost like a oh
15:56 i'm going to say paperweight but this
15:57 would be a paperweight it's a sears and
15:59 roebuck catalog there
16:01 got the stamps
16:02 and then have this item which would be
16:04 like a cash register
16:06 an underwood sun strand yeah it's kind
16:09 of always interesting to think about the
16:11 tools of the trade
16:13 back in the day compared to these are
16:14 saddles they still use saddles today but
16:16 a lot of the other machinery has been
16:18 updated and these are these are serious
16:20 antiques through here
16:23 oh look at this president gerald r ford
16:25 and mrs betty ford
16:27 enjoyed winter rides in this very sleigh
16:40 veered off a bit onto highway 24 now
16:40 i'm at some serious elevation in fact
16:42 past a couple signs
16:44 that said avalanche area
16:48 over here is a mining town
16:50 that is completely closed up
16:53 all those houses
16:54 that are over there on the hillside no
16:56 one lives in them the whole thing is
16:59 desolate and empty
17:01 an entire town
17:04 gone
17:06 well the people are
17:09 building still remain
17:12 how fascinating is that
17:14 and i would imagine even in recent times
17:16 you could probably traverse down there
17:18 there's a relatively new fence up here
17:22 says private property a super fund
17:25 site
17:27 so i don't know if i'm gonna make the
17:28 pilgrimage down the hill
17:31 or not
17:33 top of the rockies america's byways
17:36 scenic byways
17:49 now this says free entry
17:49 this is quite the conundrum so is it
17:51 free entry
17:53 that has been painted here
17:56 or
17:57 do you abide by this i'm gonna go with
18:00 this one
18:02 looks pretty fascinating though this was
18:03 the road into town
18:06 old mining town down there
18:13 what i'll do is i'll go back over
18:13 to that lookout there's a lookout over
18:15 there and i'll just kind of zoom in
18:17 from a distance
18:18 instead of hiking all the way down the
18:20 hill
18:21 i try to tread lightly when they say
18:23 private property you just never know
18:25 especially
18:26 this isn't this is exactly my home turf
18:29 this really is quite the gorge right
18:56 houses and it's interesting that they're
18:56 all still standing
19:14 and then the factory and mill
19:14 up there on the hillside
19:31 all right gonna head back down the
19:31 mountain
19:33 just down the descent a little bit is
19:35 another very beautiful area
19:37 and a dirt road
19:39 that says you're not supposed to go any
19:40 farther down there's this building
19:52 water treatment plant down that way
19:55 it's called the eagle mine wtp
19:59 the gate is open but it says do not go
20:01 past
20:02 this point
20:14 there is some sort of old trestle there
20:14 you got the wood decaying and whatnot
20:16 but still standing
20:18 there's some on that point and then
20:19 there's also
20:21 another part of the trestle way down
20:42 and starting to descent now about an
20:42 hour well 50 miles 60 miles outside of
20:45 denver at the loveland basin
20:54 way up here just saw some signs saying
20:54 how are your brakes
20:56 because there will be 44 miles
20:59 of steep grades was letting the truckers
21:01 know
21:02 to put it into low gear i am just
21:04 driving a car start to go down to into a
21:06 low gear but i was noticing going up the
21:09 ascension
21:10 definitely my car was not struggling but
21:12 you could definitely tell that it was
21:14 going almost
21:16 you know not straight up but at a pretty
21:18 good
21:19 ascension rate and now going to be a
21:22 decent in fact that sign right there
21:23 says
21:24 five to six percent grades the next 12
21:27 miles
21:28 but for 44 miles
21:30 all
21:31 dissension going down
21:34 thankfully it is you know just about
21:36 summer well i guess technically it is
21:37 summer
21:42 not winter time
21:42 because if it was winter time half of
21:44 these roads probably wouldn't even be
21:45 able to be traversed with the ice and
21:48 snow
21:53 listening to the radio
21:53 whoa there's a
21:55 sports car going by there
22:03 listen to the radio they said too
22:03 because of the elevation whatever you
22:05 normally drink in water you want to
22:07 drink twice as much water
22:13 this area over here is just for a quick
22:13 little stop
22:18 no long-term parking just a quick check
22:18 to
22:19 either chain up in the winter time
22:21 for the ice and the snow you put chains
22:23 on your tires it's required in the
22:25 winter time when the snow is thick
22:27 or also this time of year or any time of
22:29 year check brakes if your if your brakes
22:32 start to lock up or heat up
22:34 pull over here and make sure your brakes
22:35 are good
22:41 silver plume
22:41 has a main straight
22:50 and a post office and a saloon saw this
22:50 exit and pulled over
22:55 this is what i'm talking about right
22:56 georgetown loop railroad
22:59 here's the water tower
23:02 looks like a train museum
23:04 of some sort
23:11 this kind of just popped up out of
23:11 nowhere going down the mountain
23:26 all of these vehicles are equipped with
23:26 a snow plow on the front of them
23:37 that's a renegade right there
23:37 if you weren't paying attention you
23:39 would miss this exit completely and not
23:40 even know that this little village
23:43 exists
23:44 of silver plume
23:47 a historic hotel called the windsor
23:49 hotel
23:50 sits right up here in very unique
23:52 buildings here at the base of this
23:54 ridge
23:59 i really like this little town very very
24:00 small
24:15 just parked at the end of the street and
24:15 i'm just walking walking down this dirt
24:17 road
24:31 imagine living here
24:31 buying a house here
24:32 with i-70 going by there at extreme
24:35 speeds
24:40 pay no attention to this quaint little
24:40 town in here
25:02 this is something out of a movie okay
25:02 this states incorporated 1880.
25:18 could there have been a bridge going
25:18 over that waterway
25:20 and the tracks went that way probably
25:21 not because it would have
25:23 went right into the side of the rock
25:25 but maybe just doesn't look like it was
25:27 placed here as a display
25:33 this is the city hall
25:33 okay this says 1886 the silver plume
25:36 hose company
25:39 this building
26:07 this fence is made completely out of
26:07 skis
26:16 oh
26:16 i'll slip on that rock
26:18 all made out of skis
26:20 that's different
26:22 it's a good use of skis
26:25 what happened to all the skiers
26:27 that once owned those skis
26:31 we needed well not neat imagine if those
26:33 were found
26:39 well that's actually not a good good
26:39 thought but
26:46 the silver plume jail
26:46 wow it was built back in 1875
26:49 one of the chief 10
26:51 tennis one of the chief
26:53 ted ants
26:55 that kind of threw me off
27:02 one of the chief tenants was jack
27:02 mcdonald the scottish miner previous
27:04 owner of the 730 mine
27:06 the jail closed in
27:09 1915.
27:16 i'm expecting saturday to be in here sad
27:16 eye in here buddy
27:22 you're incarcerated at knots berry farm
27:22 but this reminds me of a place sat i
27:24 would be
27:25 i almost got the vibes walking up here
27:28 if there was a place
27:31 where i would imagine
27:34 to see a vehicle like this
27:44 with that on the hood
27:44 i would guess this would be the place
27:46 fits right in and at the end of the
27:48 street the windsor hotel
27:51 this thing is awesome
27:52 there's dogs there
27:54 hello pups
27:56 hello
27:57 all right back in my car now driving
27:59 down these dirt roads here's the church
28:01 building
28:09 and more of the downtown area if i was a
28:09 filmmaker if i was making a movie
28:12 i would utilize this town
28:15 i would imagine even dirt look at this
28:17 the garage
28:20 but this would be such a great movie set
28:24 it ran out the town and even during the
28:26 winter time with the snow everywhere
28:28 would probably add to the ambiance even
28:30 more
28:32 you just see tim burton utilizing this
28:34 town for something
28:36 i don't know why just gives me those
28:37 vibes continued on a little further
28:39 now approaching the community of idaho
28:42 springs colorado
28:45 and right here off the 70 and this
28:47 access road that i have
28:49 turned off of
28:51 is a former mine that's closed
29:16 plus she would have to scaffold over
29:16 that that
29:17 rusted out fence and
29:20 climb over the river
29:22 to get to those buildings
29:30 here's a nice little
29:30 relic off the side of the road
29:34 oh prospector
29:40 look at this thing
29:40 so you got the shell on the outside
29:42 which is probably
29:44 concrete
29:49 yeah it's like a concrete shell but then
29:49 you got the wood where
29:51 his arms were which has kind of fallen
29:54 to disrepair
29:56 this has seen some years
30:29 that is something
30:29 it's interesting that it was never
30:30 painted or if it was it's painted back
30:33 to the beige now
30:34 you know could have had the
30:37 blue pants on red shirt
30:40 colored bandana there
30:42 hat
30:44 maybe a brown beard
30:47 it's just all beige all gray
30:54 and i had something very interesting
30:55 happen to me back there at the silver
30:57 town so remind me of something out like
30:59 you know be used in a movie and whatnot
31:01 and that hotel
31:03 there was a guy who was sitting on the
31:06 stoop of the hotel and he said what are
31:09 you wearing a raised cap for i can't i
31:11 am surprised someone out way out here in
31:13 colorado be wearing a raised cap so i
31:16 told him you know go to a lot of the a
31:18 lot of the games the team plays across
31:20 the country told her about a little tour
31:22 i'm on i do
31:24 things for youtube and travel around and
31:26 he told me that he was in the raise
31:28 organization
