welcome everyone Adam the Wu here
0:04
today's adventure takes us back to the
0:07
late 1970s when the horror genre of
0:12
aquatic creatures were all the rage and
0:17
this little community is no exception
0:19
the filming locations of Barracuda took
0:24
place at the downtown section of my
0:29
former hometown where I moved starting
0:32
in 1991 and live for over two decades
0:35
and come back to visit occasionally I
0:39
enjoy quirky b-list movies and this is a
0:47
good one it happened a good portion of
0:50
it right over there let's go check it
0:56
out I'm inviting you to join me
0:59
shalyah in 1978 the fictional place of
1:04
Palm Cove was a beachside town the
1:08
reality
1:16
about an hour so from the ocean here in
1:16
downtown st. cloud which stood in for it
1:22
add in the fact that this is my old
1:24
stomping grounds and that I had an
1:27
apartment here for a few years in this
1:29
precise neighborhood makes it a little
1:33
extra exciting for me most of the
1:36
activity took place here on New York
1:38
Avenue and down at the end there
1:40
connects with 10th street at the
1:43
crossroads City Hall the building in
1:45
front was not there back then that has
1:48
recently been added in the last decade
1:51
or so used to be a completely straight
1:54
through thoroughfare all the way though
1:57
lakeshore also these bricks are
1:59
relatively kinda-sorta knew they were
2:01
here way back in the day but in the 70s
2:05
they were covered over with pavement and
2:07
since then have been recently resurfaced
2:10
and opened up giving it that old-school
2:14
ambiance once again the sheriff played
2:17
by actor William Kirwan this cruiser
2:20
would have been parked right about there
2:23
in the street his office would have been
2:29
adjacent to that he exited the vehicle
2:40
and then into this very door and is an
2:40
interesting coincidence about him being
2:42
in that movie and an older one by the
2:45
name of 2000 maniacs also filmed on this
2:48
road much earlier no connection
2:50
whatsoever other than being in the same
2:52
genre and that he was nearly a leading
2:55
man in both and they were separated by a
2:58
little over a decade but still is a fun
3:00
fact that he happened to star in both of
3:04
them in the same town on the same street
3:07
and in Barracuda this was his office at
3:12
least the exteriors in my old apartment
3:17
down there on the left a two-story
3:22
building at the end of the road
3:23
deputy Lester seen here holding this
3:26
five gallon water jug also has a tie-in
3:30
to the genre the actor might look
3:32
familiar because he was mr. Garrett who
3:36
was watching over the hospital in
3:38
Halloween - you could have been right
3:43
here carry in that water jug the pattern
3:47
on the ground is slightly different
3:48
used to be hensel's five-and-dime and 25
3:52
cent store located right there still
3:55
looks the same sup they've wreaked it
3:58
and a couple places backdrop of what was
4:01
the hunter arms and still is the Hunter
4:04
Arms Hotel is still the same Wayne
4:10
Crawford who played the part of Mike
4:11
seen here walking out of the police
4:13
station with the sheriff's daughter Liza
4:16
AUSA was a director and filmed all of
4:20
the underwater sequences
4:27
and in that same they were walking this
4:27
direction and encounters some angry town
4:30
folk it is neat how after 40 plus years
4:35
this section pretty much looks identical
4:39
that have been walking directly towards
4:41
where I'm standing in this fashion here
4:44
and then heard and noticed a
4:46
fender-bender
4:47
over to the left nothing super dramatic
4:51
or damaging just a little bump as she
4:54
backed up into his car
5:04
and that's the backdrop and their
5:04
vehicles would have been right over here
5:06
and this section you can see two of the
5:10
main characters they're listening into
5:13
the activity they were next to that pole
5:25
all being watched by someone who's up to
5:25
no good
5:26
very ominous looking the parking down
5:30
here has changed a little bit since then
5:33
automobiles are required to be a little
5:36
bit off of the structure itself when
5:39
back then they would have been right up
5:41
against these poles this corner was used
5:43
as well and I'm happy to report that it
5:48
also has not changed
6:00
and as they continued walking they pass
6:01
by this old Bank slot deposit slot which
6:05
has been repainted but was also here and
6:09
can be seen in the film
6:11
as displayed here right in front of him
6:15
he's about to pass it that is that they
6:21
were enroute to the Palm Cove Medical
6:23
Centre seen here which this building
6:30
stood in for
6:39
which still also has family medicine to
6:39
this day was no window there on the far
6:42
left just some signage and now a window
6:50
has been carved out but other than that
7:02
this was the exterior
7:02
the fictional Palm Cove Medical Center
7:11
who knew also at those cross streets is
7:11
the former People's Bank there on the
7:13
left
7:24
drove off through that intersection and
7:24
notice the clock on the far right at the
7:28
police substation that can also be seen
7:31
when the car was parked right here from
7:37
this angle
7:39
there's that clock the historic st.
7:43
cloud hotel was used the interiors of
7:45
this were definitely used however it is
7:50
under a major refurbishment and none
7:57
shall pass get a pretty good peek though
8:00
in this side window that is where the
8:01
front desk was where the clerk was
8:06
telling the the person checking out that
8:08
they could really use their business and
8:10
development around these parts of course
8:13
everything now has been stripped away
8:14
but this is what it did look like during
8:18
the same and as soon as one guest checks
8:21
out another checks in look at that Kodak
8:24
film signage would be hanging right
8:27
there on the side of that of that cinder
8:30
block facade there on the left after
8:35
paying close attention I had assumed
8:37
that the Palm Cove Chronicle the
8:40
newspaper building is possibly on a set
8:44
but I have found the door to the paper
8:47
in this building backlit with an aqua
8:51
green lamp to give it some nice ambience
8:54
that giveaway is the mail slot in the
8:56
door
8:56
also this circular hole to the left of
8:59
the bottom door frame and the step up
9:02
which brings us to this The Chronicle
9:08
where you can get your news here in Palm
9:12
Cove a quaint little community whether
9:14
fictional or in real life they both kind
9:18
of have the same vibe
9:36
an urgent phone message via this
9:36
payphone was being sent and while it has
9:41
most certainly been reapplied it was
9:45
either tucked into this corner or
9:52
possibly this corner
10:02
just a guess and while it is very
10:02
difficult to pinpoint where the
10:04
cigarette was thrown down upon the
10:06
ground because it has been repaved
10:10
because that's where it happened and the
10:12
guy was following the reporter back over
10:14
to the paper where I showed a moment ago
10:18
at the end of this block the plot
10:20
thickens
10:22
nightfall starts to rear its head even
10:24
though in reality I have about another
10:26
hour and I have a little time until
10:29
something starting to starting to drift
10:31
out the sun's starting to set but in the
10:34
film it get to go with me or use your
10:36
imagination nightfall has now reared its
10:41
beachside community you know the ocean
10:46
is an hour away just put yourself into
10:50
barracuda
10:57
with another angle of what the front of
10:57
the st. cloud hotel used to look like
11:06
versus what it does now
11:06
he was being followed down this sidewalk
11:09
and across this section down that other
11:13
pathway under those arches
11:22
continuing towards the clock it's also
11:28
neat to see that there is this little
11:29
gap between the structures that was a
11:32
parking lot and even after all these
11:34
years nothing has been built in its
11:37
place that little section between
11:41
building a and B is still empty
11:45
I guess truth be told I'm not too far
11:48
off on the timeline the Sun is really
11:51
setting pretty close Mike was in an
11:57
awful rush to find the deputy stop by
11:59
the sheriff's office he had this very
12:02
spiffy dune buggy type sports car pulled
12:07
up right here in front of us no sign of
12:10
the deputy so drove up to the next
12:12
street corner of New York and tenth and
12:15
took a hard right heading towards the
12:17
medical facility but not before passing
12:20
the police substation
12:28
and that window could be st. very sharp
12:28
turn and found deputy luster over there
12:32
and it was here he assured them he would
12:36
call even more authorities to help for
12:39
backup
12:40
and that's as much as I can tell you to
12:42
stay spoiler free
12:49
because if I give it away this creature
12:49
might might have a little gnaw on myself
12:55
next time I step into a body of water
12:56
and I can't have that I'm gonna have to
13:00
