0:02 welcome everyone Adam the whoo here to a
0:02 very windy a very cold and crisp day in
0:06 the Black Hills of South Dakota Keystone
0:09 to be exact and I'm sitting next to a
0:13 man who needs no introduction the one
0:15 and only Abraham Lincoln which is a good
0:18 segue for the content of today's vlog
0:21 because today my friends you see I will
0:23 be witnessing I will be experiencing and
0:27 feasting my eyes upon Mount Rushmore
0:30 it's a bucket list item for sure in my
0:34 life join me
0:36 shall you before heading down the road
0:39 just a bit to our destination stopped
0:41 off here at the Gutzon Borglum statue
0:44 he's a sculptor we have to thank for the
0:46 carvings that we're about to see got his
0:49 pickaxe in hand and standing tall proud
0:52 of his achievement you might be familiar
0:55 with more of his work if you've ever
0:56 been to Atlanta to Stone Mountain he did
0:59 that as well this statue also created by
1:02 the man himself the only self sculpture
1:04 he ever did him and his son Lincoln who
1:08 took over the project after his father
1:11 died in 1941 and next to Honest Abe
1:14 another piece of his handiwork
1:16 he has inscribed his signature next to
1:20 the president's top hat
1:40 just about there have to pass underneath
1:40 this archway and all will be revealed I
1:44 feel like this might be the appropriate
1:46 time to remove my glasses and see it
1:49 with my own Grand View Terrace provides
1:56 the grand reveal look at that I don't
2:05 know if it's cold weather or emotions my
2:08 eyes are a little watery that is
2:11 impressive
2:12 most just think of all the time and work
2:17 the patients there went into creating
2:21 that and now it stands for all to see
2:24 one of the most famous landmarks in all
2:27 the u.s. you could see the chipped away
2:28 rock at the bottom of the hill remnants
2:32 from the dynamite that was left and
2:37 ultimately revealing the faces of these
2:42 four gentlemen through painstaking
2:43 effort just try to wrap your head around
2:46 that for a second this is in the side of
2:50 a mountain this isn't a painting this
2:54 isn't made out of clay this is carved in
2:58 the side of a mountain starting from
3:02 left to right we have George Washington
3:04 the first president of the United States
3:09 serving in office from 1789 to 1797
3:16 forever immortalized in stone
3:20 next is Thomas Jefferson the third to
3:23 take office but also one of the primary
3:25 principal authors of the Declaration of
3:29 Independence Theodore Roosevelt the 26th
3:32 president is famous saying
3:36 speak softly carry a big stick
3:44 old teddy up there and next to him the
3:44 16th commander-in-chief Abraham Lincoln
3:50 he completes the four images that are
3:53 placed on the side of this rock
3:55 through the beauty of this zoom lens I'm
3:57 able to get this iconic shot but I
3:59 didn't want to walk down on my own see
4:02 if I can get a better view personally
4:05 paint trail has been constructed to help
4:07 you get a little more up close and
4:09 personal it is cold today
4:11 you see there's snow on the ground it is
4:13 freezing temperatures this is worth it
4:17 definitely worth it
4:19 made my way up this wooden platform and
4:22 have just about reached the end of the
4:26 trail but that's okay
4:29 because it doesn't get much better and
4:34 close than this
4:45 hello founding fathers rubble behind me
4:45 years of blood sweat and tears to create
4:49 the president's looming over my head
4:59 safe to say I'm I'm having an emotional
4:59 moment add to the fact that I'm one of
5:01 the few people on property and the only
5:06 person in this section it adds to the
5:12 experience there are times in my life
5:14 that I have to step back and realize how
5:18 blessed and grateful I am to be doing
5:22 the things I am doing when I was young
5:24 going to some of the places that I have
5:27 visited as an adult just in the last
5:29 five six seven eight years I never
5:32 thought would be possible but I have
5:35 stood on the cliffs and looked down into
5:38 the Grand Canyon and afterwards
5:41 reflected these same thoughts I have
5:44 looked down as the water rushed over
5:47 Niagara Falls and at that point
5:50 thought wow what a wife I am living
5:56 seeing and doing the things I am doing
5:59 and I'm having that moment now standing
6:03 under these four gentlemen Mount
6:07 Rushmore I'm here there are many other
6:11 occasions and moments that I have felt
6:14 these thoughts but the feelings are real
6:25 it's awesome if you make your way a
6:25 little further back down the trail
6:27 there's this cave completely accessible
6:31 and it's not off-limits you are allowed
6:36 to come in here in fact they have a
6:38 little gate set up and if you look up
6:42 through the hole right there George
6:50 Washington I see you didn't mean to get
6:55 so heavy back there life however life is
6:58 life as a funny thing moving on until
7:01 next time fellas I'll see you see you
7:06 around
7:07 however can't leave without some
7:08 souvenirs to document the occasion
7:10 miniature version perhaps or an even
7:16 miniature miniature version some socks
7:19 perhaps could have used an extra pair of
7:22 these on my feet today it's a little
7:24 chilly out there
7:25 I collect magnets and get them from
7:27 different locations that I go to this
7:32 one looks good you know what yeah don't
7:36 worry mr. Borglum I understand that you
7:39 break it you buy it policy not that I
7:41 broke it but you know I bought it you
7:44 understand what I'm saying with all the
7:45 excitement and coldness on my brain I
7:47 forgot to check out the museum it's warm
7:50 in here which is a good thing
7:53 this was the plaster model used as the
7:56 measurements would be the finished
7:58 product and it is 112
8:01 scale meeting one inch on the model
8:05 equals one foot of the mountains carving
8:08 there he is up on the shoulder standing
8:10 next to the head even that looks massive
8:14 and this is just a percentage of what
8:17 what would be what would be the things
8:19 to come on the fourth of July 1930 the
8:22 Washington image was revealed and there
8:24 was a flag placed up there for the
8:27 dedication they still have it here
8:29 behind this glass case display shows how
8:32 the creation took place starting with
8:35 the scaffolding that they had to
8:38 construct just to get all into the nooks
8:41 and crannies of all the facial features
8:45 to make the magic happen workers would
8:47 climb 700 stairs to get to the top and
8:51 then later they made these wooden
8:53 buckets that would hoist you up in the
8:56 air screwing up on something of this
8:58 size would be bad enough but that size
9:02 that's a whole different ballgame his
9:05 original plans he did not want to use
9:07 dynamite he was completely against it
9:09 but after a few weeks of drilling he
9:11 realized the old-fashioned way just
9:13 wasn't gonna cut it and dynamite was
9:15 brought in all right we're gonna
9:17 detonate it i detonated
9:21 do in my part pretty cool interactive
9:26 experience you just press a button of
9:29 the image you want to detonate push this
9:32 down there you go
9:40 explosion if you look closely behind the
9:40 heads it's a little passageway it's an
9:43 unfinished room back there called the
9:46 Hall of Records this is what it looks
9:49 like right here there's the door and
9:54 this is an image from back then there's
9:57 the heads and then tucked away behind
10:00 them was a staircase leading up to the
10:06 Hall of Records untouched and uncarved
10:08 in 1925 that's what it looked like and
10:12 that's the ceremony announcing what was
10:14 gonna happen there's Borglum hoisting a
10:16 flag atop it he had a vision that's
10:20 gonna do it for today from Mount
10:22 Rushmore if you enjoyed this video
