0:08 today's adventure begins the hustle and
0:08 bustle of New York City
0:10 corner
0:12 of 53rd
0:14 and third
0:29 welcome everyone Adam the Wu here as the
0:30 recording of this it is Wednesday May 17
0:33 2023 corner of 53rd and third a song off
0:38 the self-titled Ramones Ramones album
0:41 released back in 1976 personal favorite
0:45 punk band of mine I was had the
0:47 opportunity the honor of seeing them in
0:49 1994 1995 at the edge in Orlando and I'm
0:55 going to cover the spots today got a
0:57 piping hot caffeinated beverage so I'm
0:59 just going to roam around but I wanted
1:01 to start here
1:02 I thought this was a good place to study
1:04 to do the intro join me
1:07 shall you now I'm gonna say that this
1:09 street corner has changed dramatically
1:12 70s when that song was written the
1:15 context and reasoning behind that song
1:19 this area a lot of New York it's a
1:22 little bit better condition than it was
1:24 than some of the areas I will not I will
1:26 be going to are probably a little I want
1:29 to say safer but just a little
1:31 a little more gentrified than they were
1:34 when the Ramones were down here and
1:36 writing songs
1:37 as is the street corner from this area
1:40 town I'm going to walk this direction
1:41 over towards Radio City Music Hall where
1:45 the Ramones Ramones album was recorded
1:50 the upper office areas of her Studios
1:53 now I know I've stated this since I've
1:55 been in New York
2:03 Milwaukee and public transit City having
2:03 a car here
2:04 not fun
2:07 I've been I've been through here years
2:10 ago with the vehicle I don't know if
2:12 I'll ever have a vehicle in NYC again
2:14 when I'm visiting it's just easier just
2:16 to walk walk and Subway it and taxi and
2:19 Uber it the iconic Radio City Music Hall
2:22 known for many different reasons but for
2:24 this subject matter it's about an album
2:27 that was recorded on the eighth floor
2:29 now I do not know where the offices of
2:32 Plaza Sound Studio was other than the
2:35 fact that it was eight rows up in one of
2:37 those windows
2:39 reported in early 1976
2:42 february-ish of 76 and it was an album
2:45 that completely
2:47 kind of changed the world if you're into
2:49 punk rock in fact I believe Joey did an
2:52 interview saying how that that was kind
2:54 of the album depending on there was a
2:55 couple different bands that people say
2:57 started the whole Punk movement but I
3:00 leaned towards the remote so in this
3:02 building is where they recorded that
3:05 album for the sum of only six thousand
3:08 dollars well six thousand and change
3:10 and in fact they ended up using the
3:12 wulitzer organ I believe I've probably
3:14 mispronouncing that
3:16 that was Radio City Hall's organ and
3:19 that was used on the cover of Let's
3:20 Dance which was the only cover on on
3:24 that album
3:25 that took place
3:27 happen right here at Radio City and the
3:30 rest as they say is history if you ever
3:33 listen to The Hunk genre
3:35 Modern Age early you know turn of the
3:39 century 80s 90s any any era of that
3:43 genre every single one of those bands
3:45 was influenced by the band that recorded
3:49 right up there on the eighth floor and
3:51 that album and if they weren't
3:52 influenced by that particular album or
3:55 the Ramones they were influenced by a
3:58 band that was influenced by that so we
4:01 kind of let that sink out for me it's
4:02 just uh definitely pretty awesome to
4:05 think about that it all started here
4:07 some would say someone argued that the
4:09 punk movement and the punk genre began
4:11 by an album that was recorded somewhere
4:15 up on the eighth floor of this building
4:16 it's fascinating to think about and yes
4:19 I know the argument could be made that
4:21 there was a couple other bands before
4:22 that but I'm talking about putting it
4:24 into the mainstream here in America yes
4:26 there was a Sex Pistols but that was not
4:28 really like a U.S band per se so just
4:31 kind of that's that's kind of what I'm
4:33 going for I'm gonna I'm gonna lean
4:35 towards the big beginnings of it
4:36 starting right here with the Ramones
4:39 rock and roll radio let's go hey ho
4:43 let's go
4:45 love it
4:51 I'm also using references to the bands
4:53 that may or may not have been on that
4:54 first album
4:55 just a heads up
5:02 this place is a beehive of activity
5:02 I'm a software kind of curious where it
5:05 was though so you look here one
5:07 two
5:08 three four five six seven eight go to
5:11 bed right there before the cusp either
5:14 on this side or indents in and goes up
5:17 or over on that side of the cusp like
5:20 that word cost standing here at this Big
5:22 Apple NYC the Big Apple I also know the
5:25 band had a lot of early ties in their
5:27 early years really early before they
5:29 started getting really popular over in
5:31 Queens but I'm focusing on the New York
5:33 City Manhattan area the Bowery area and
5:38 all that but they you know kind of
5:40 leading each other where they live early
5:42 early on before the band kind of took
5:44 off and really like started was you know
5:47 over one of the other boroughs but I'm
5:48 not gonna go over there this is going to
5:49 mostly be in this general area and I
5:51 decided I would just walk from where I
5:53 just was
5:55 why
5:56 I've already probably walked a mile of
5:58 it already got another couple miles to
5:59 go give or take
6:01 down to Bowery
6:04 always good to stretch the legs
6:07 cutting through Greeley square and gonna
6:11 head down Broadway for a bit
6:19 it's like a little seating area but
6:19 looks like it used to be a thoroughfare
6:21 for vehicles I could hear the subway
6:23 going underneath my feet well on my feet
6:25 just off the feet down to the grates
6:27 below this is the flat iron building
6:28 which looks like it has some scaffolding
6:31 around it I guess you're doing a little
6:32 a little work on the oh there's another
6:34 clock I always like these clocks right
6:35 now is about three minutes three or four
6:38 minutes until 3 P.M but this is the flat
6:41 iron building right here pretty big
6:43 Landmark here at NYC yeah the road I was
6:46 just on ends directly into this Archway
6:49 kind of obstructing the sun just a
6:51 little bit Washington Square we're
6:55 having a graduation ceremony over here
6:57 possibly for one of the colleges in the
7:00 area you can see there's Washington
7:01 there
7:03 and here is Washington right up here as
7:07 well
7:14 over in this park is this Fountain now
7:14 the buildings have kind of changed in
7:15 the background the trees are looks like
7:17 they took it probably during the time of
7:19 year where there weren't a lot of leaves
7:20 on the trees but the fountain Still
7:22 Remains where the four of them were kind
7:24 of sitting on the edge next to the
7:25 little
7:26 a little pylon that kind of protrudes
7:28 upward in the steps in the background
7:30 and everything
7:31 yeah still looks exactly the same many
7:33 many decades later
7:35 four plus decades after the fact all
7:38 right I have now made it over onto the
7:41 of Bowery
7:43 and East Second Street and take a look
7:47 at the sign up here Joey Ramone place
7:50 from what I was reading I don't know if
7:52 it's true or not they said this is one
7:53 of the most stolen
7:55 street signs in the city I don't know if
7:56 I don't know if that's true or not but
7:57 maybe it sounds like it'd be like a fun
7:59 fact it's pretty high up there on the
8:01 top of the pole so this is going to be
8:02 pretty awesome down here on the
8:11 side of the street is a garden of some
8:11 sort with a fence around it
8:14 and unbeknownst probably to most people
8:16 that walk by this this is where the
8:18 photo from The Ramones self-titled album
8:21 that 76 album
8:23 was taken in this Garden known as
8:26 Albert's Gardens he's a sign right there
8:28 Albert's Garden member of the Manhattan
8:31 Land Trust
8:33 but this is where the four of them stood
8:36 in the mid 70s to take their photo
8:40 is it going to be open am I going to get
8:42 lucky with this being open oh my gosh it
8:44 is open holy cow yes I've seen some
8:47 photos online a lot of them showed that
8:49 the gate was locked could have been
8:51 based on the time of the year
8:53 so it is a very beautiful neighborhood
8:55 Garden
9:02 the little seating areas
9:02 beautiful foliage
9:05 brick and cobblestone
9:09 sidewalks through here
9:12 and this is kind of blowing my mind a
9:13 little bit because right over there the
9:16 soothing sounds of the siren going by
9:20 pawns through here and chair ribs
9:23 a little bluebird on the side of here
9:32 and I'm really happy that the gate was
9:32 open because right over here against
9:35 this very wall
9:37 is one of the most iconic punk rock
9:39 album photos of all time
9:43 of them standing against that brick wall
9:52 now the graffiti is gone there it has
9:52 been repainted it's been touched up it's
9:54 been fixed up I believe there might have
9:56 even been kind of a line drawn down here
9:59 that made it look like this protruded
10:01 out but the brick work still
10:03 still looks the same right there so I
10:06 kind of match the photo up and this is
10:07 what I'm referring to this is the album
10:09 cover obviously they put the text across
10:11 there and it has been repainted
10:19 I'm gonna say I am
10:19 97 confident that this is the spot
10:23 I just feel like it definitely is the
10:25 only thing that kind of throws me off is
10:28 the kind of the Hue of the Shadow here
10:30 in the corner makes it looks like the
10:32 the building protrudes out but I think
10:35 it's just kind of a confusing but it is
10:37 said by many different sources
10:40 this is the very spot and it makes sense
10:42 because it's right around the corner
10:44 where
10:45 they would always kind of they had a lot
10:47 of history they're all haunts if you
10:49 will a lot of things happen in this
10:51 neighborhood within a series of like one
10:53 block
10:54 and there's a lot of different like you
10:55 know photo shoots that they utilized
10:57 that right there
10:59 is the wall
11:12 a little wrought iron gate here now
11:12 and these are the very bricks
11:16 legendary
11:18 if you will
11:20 I mean for me it's I would have seen
11:22 that cover of that album
11:24 kind of goes on and lives on and infamy
11:27 or history if you will
11:29 the four of them standing right here
11:32 and the view of the photographer
11:35 as they were standing here
11:37 would have been right over there
11:38 obviously the garden has grown up quite
11:40 a bit and I would imagine the
11:41 neighborhood is probably in a little bit
11:43 better shape than it was
11:46 back in 76 when that photo was taken
11:56 I just need a leather jacket I had a
11:56 leather jacket on me right now
11:58 could be Adam remote I believe that they
12:00 got the name the Ramones from Paul
12:02 McCartney I believe Paul McCartney of
12:04 The Beatles had a hand in that day don't
12:07 quote me on that though but I believe
12:08 that's the case no historical marker no
12:10 placard no info
12:16 again there is a three percent chance
12:16 I'm gonna say a three percent chance it
12:18 might not be factual
12:20 but it really does look like it is and
12:22 just because it is the neighborhood
12:25 I'm gonna kind of go with my gut on that
12:26 one it's like got it and say it's true
12:28 but you never know internet's weird like
12:31 that
12:32 and this is a spot that I've wanted to
12:34 see for a long time I heard about this
12:35 years ago and finally made it to see it
12:57 anyone interested in visiting these are
12:57 the hours for 2023.
13:02 so going outside of the gate now outside
13:02 of the wall Albert's Garden there's the
13:04 wall
13:05 close proximity right up here about gosh
13:08 I don't know six seven
13:11 house entryways in
13:18 was known as The Fifth Ramone he was
13:18 nicknamed the fifth remote and from what
13:20 I was seeing he went to every show The
13:22 Ramones played more than like 2 000
13:23 shows he went to all of them but like
13:25 two evidently there was a reason he
13:27 couldn't make it to those two but he
13:28 went to every show
13:30 more than I guess every member with the
13:31 exception probably of Johnny and Joey
13:33 perhaps and I believe he passed away in
13:36 2013 but he lived right here and for a
13:40 while Joey and Dede lived
13:44 top there and evidently
13:47 he designed a lot of their artwork he
13:49 worked a lot of the lighting for the
13:50 shows he toured with them
13:52 they got their start kind of here on
13:55 this very corner
13:56 and you know a couple of them lived up
13:59 in the Loft with him but he was also the
14:01 one who created the design the eagle
14:03 design like the presidential seal kind
14:05 of kind of emblem that was used in all
14:09 this your shirts you know the shirts
14:11 remote shirts are so popular a lot of
14:12 people probably even wear them and don't
14:14 even realize the history of the band
14:15 kind of like the Misfits or you know
14:17 like Metallica or you know like a
14:20 Yankees shirt stuff like that they're
14:21 just they've gone to the next level of
14:23 what the even what they even are based
14:25 on and their popularity has gone so
14:28 above and beyond that it's just become a
14:30 thing and and the the T-shirt was
14:32 designed
14:33 by the guy that lived here who was known
14:36 as unofficially The Fifth member of the
14:39 Ramon good friend and guy who went to
14:41 every single show would help them out
14:42 dramatically and there's also a sticker
14:44 up above the door the entryway into his
14:47 Loft in honor of them so much placed
14:50 over on the door now that is right there
14:51 but right around the corner less than
14:53 probably 50 yards is
14:56 the very famous punk rock venue CB
14:59 Genies country Bluegrass and blues is
15:03 what that stands for except when it it
15:06 got going it just turned into like a
15:08 punk rock venue there was very little
15:09 country Bluegrass or Blues played there
15:12 as it progressed so right here at the
15:15 edge of Joey remote place so you
15:18 continue around
15:19 past down Bowery and there are new
15:24 buildings here there's also an old news
15:26 stand that's been converted in like a
15:27 little snack area you don't want to see
15:29 too many papers anymore but the old CBG
15:33 Beast is right up here on the left side
15:38 someone's receipt just flew away from
15:39 the former newsstand this house they're
15:41 going down there someone's receipt went
15:42 all the way down there
15:44 front of CB so all this has been
15:46 completely redone I believe this was a
15:47 motel at one point where this janitor is
15:50 coming out of three one five Valerie
15:53 and they have kind of it's now it's
15:55 called John
15:57 Varvatos which I don't know what that is
15:59 maybe like an upscale clothing place I
16:01 see some amplifiers and stuff in there
16:04 one thing Seabees was known for was the
16:06 awning I think there was two awnings one
16:08 of them is at the Rock and Roll Hall of
16:09 Fame in Cleveland when I was there in
16:11 Cleveland last year I got a photo in
16:14 front of it there's a lot of pictures of
16:16 the Ramones here in fact their very
16:17 first show happened here not long
16:21 after my birthday I was born in 1974
16:24 August 10th I think like a week later
16:27 was the first time the Ramones ever
16:29 performed in Seabees right inside here
16:32 the date was August 16 I'm kind of
16:34 standing over in the quarter hiding the
16:36 Sun so you can kind of see this this is
16:38 one of the most famous photos of them in
16:40 front of Seabees too notice the corner
16:41 of Bleaker
16:43 and the battle and there's the
16:46 approximate angle there is a car here in
16:48 front of me so I can't get the exact
16:49 angle
16:55 corner of Bowery and Bleaker they were
16:55 standing right next to that pole
16:57 blows my mind CBGB is just such a
17:00 legendary venue maybe the most legendary
17:02 Punk venue of all time
17:04 Gilman Street from me too A lot of the
17:05 lookout record stuff and the Bay Area
17:08 Berkeley that's another big one but
17:09 those are the two for me I think CB is
17:12 probably a little more a little more
17:14 famous here's a photo of hilly Crystal
17:16 who we have to thank
17:19 for cbgb's
17:21 standing in front of the Palace Hotel
17:23 door and the 315 awning there's a good
17:27 movie made about him but seabeach came
17:29 out a few years ago really good and
17:31 here's another one of the Ramones
17:32 themselves
17:33 in front of the very famous awning very
17:37 famous bathroom too the bathroom was
17:39 like legendary in fact when they made
17:40 the movie they didn't act they didn't do
17:42 it here I think they did it in Georgia
17:43 they could have filmed it in Savannah
17:45 but they recreated this block and they
17:46 even put the Palace Hotel sign up as
17:49 well that Palace Hotel sign hopefully
17:51 that's in a museum somewhere that
17:52 belongs in a museum
17:54 as long as same with the awning that's
17:57 the angle of the photo I just showed
18:00 this is the same building so this
18:02 building up top here is the same
18:04 building just the lower portions have
18:06 kind of changed just a little bit in
18:08 fact
18:09 see the little parts that go into the
18:11 basement are still there too the little
18:13 metal grates so the Palace Hotel sign
18:16 was on the other side right where that
18:17 that same door is
18:19 where hilly was standing in front of
18:31 so it's all connected to 315. a photo of
18:31 him right here in front of this so
18:33 that's also three one five which I never
18:35 really realized that was kind of
18:36 connected there used to be a record
18:38 store next to it what is now a manta
18:40 it's another really good photo from this
18:42 angle so after looking at the photo bus
18:44 we'll show it a minute see the building
18:46 that's next to it so you got
18:48 315 right here this whole building is
18:51 original this building over here
18:54 completely new so the record store was
18:56 here that was very short-lived I believe
18:58 for Seabees but then he got Seabees
19:00 proper and then you got the door here of
19:02 hilly Crystal not Billy Crystal the
19:05 actor hilly Crystal
19:07 uh he always wore overalls he had a
19:09 beard but this building is completely
19:11 new I think this building is original
19:13 but a lot of this over here is all new
19:16 new as well this is kind of the angle I
19:19 was just at
19:20 the record canteen to see this other
19:23 building next to it the shorter building
19:25 that's been torn out
19:27 thankfully this this little section
19:29 Still Remains now there are not a whole
19:31 heck of a lot of Alleyways in New York I
19:34 was hearing that the reason for that is
19:36 just limited space in New York proper
19:39 where instead of having alleys they
19:41 would have to like conserve space that's
19:43 why the garbage is kept on the side of
19:45 the road and picked up instead of
19:46 putting put around the back of the
19:47 alleys this one just so happens to be
19:50 where the you know the infamous punk
19:53 rock venue used to be behind it is an
19:56 alley and there's another famous photo
19:58 from The Ramones that was taken right
20:00 behind that in the alley I walk around
20:03 there now before the back alleys of NYC
20:05 now I can assure you this has definitely
20:07 been fixed up
20:09 quite a bit
20:11 since how it was back in the Ramones
20:14 days quite a bit in fact I'm going to
20:17 show a couple photos of what it looked
20:20 like and what they have done to this so
20:21 this is the original building there and
20:23 the back side of Seabees is that cbgb's
20:25 I call it CBS for short
20:27 it's down there on the far end so here's
20:29 a photo back in the day of what it
20:31 looked like you see the little parking
20:32 thing there in fact the building at the
20:35 end of The Alley so the back side of the
20:37 of the venue is down right over there
20:41 this building has been torn down as well
20:43 and change with the new building and I
20:46 think this side over here also
20:48 completely new as well so I'll match
20:50 that up the parking sign was right there
20:54 you can see this building completely new
20:56 the one in the distance completely new
20:58 the only thing left is right there where
21:02 the parking sign was
21:08 also a really good photo of the Ramones
21:08 in front of a wrecked car that was down
21:10 here in the back of this alley that they
21:12 got a little photo of as well all right
21:15 completely incorrect it wasn't a wrecked
21:17 car it was a dumpster that was in this
21:19 alley
21:20 you could see the building and the
21:21 distance there that's been torn down and
21:23 off to the left behind them they keep
21:25 going straight and walk to the left was
21:27 the back side of the venue as much has
21:29 just been has been repaved back here
21:37 and cleaned up this section really has
21:37 the same Vibe I mean this is like full
21:41 on how it did look even then
21:44 the only difference is
21:46 this door which is the back side of the
21:49 new store has been changed it's now
21:53 nicer glass still has the gates that
21:55 pull down
21:57 was parked your motorcycle back here
21:58 probably a worker but this window is
22:01 still the same all this still looks the
22:04 same it's kind of tagged up a little bit
22:06 of graffiti but the angle
22:09 for rocket to Russia Great album
22:13 was taken right here behind the venue
22:16 itself now you cannot go around this
22:19 side so this here is kind of blocked off
22:21 there's a very interesting Alleyway
22:23 that's tucked away back here and I would
22:26 imagine walking back here at night in
22:28 the 70s I would not have recommended it
22:33 Charles Bronson but right here let me
22:36 match up the photo
22:37 from that album cover another very
22:39 favorite we're getting two iconic
22:42 promotes punk rock albums
22:45 just within a block of each other as
22:47 shown here
22:49 now if you look also like how they
22:50 always use like black and white for the
22:52 photos obviously the text is in pink but
22:55 if you look over here over Joey's
22:56 shoulder notice how the Hue kind of
22:59 changes of the brick itself it almost
23:02 looks like there was a former window way
23:04 back in the day that they bricked over
23:06 even prior to the 70s that you can kind
23:09 of see that still exists to this time
23:11 too so there was just a big open door
23:14 maybe like a metal door I think it was
23:16 probably like a a metal door that was
23:18 closed for the low Den which is another
23:20 interesting thing this is where the
23:21 bands would load in around the back here
23:22 which I didn't even think about that
23:24 until I'm standing there so yeah the
23:25 bands not just the Ramones but gosh
23:28 hundreds and hundreds
23:29 of you know just great bands that have
23:32 played here
23:33 but right over here
23:36 the metal door is gone now it's that
23:37 glass door so here is that kind of
23:40 different hue
23:42 of the indentation here it's been
23:43 repainted so Joey was standing closest
23:46 to that that I was just kind of
23:47 mentioning right there against there and
23:49 if you look inside the window inside the
23:52 store
23:53 there is actually a Ramones poster you
23:56 can kind of make it out there through
23:57 the glare
23:59 the glare and the window Ramones
24:01 yeah you know truthfully this is pretty
24:04 awesome this spot
24:10 I don't know just it blows my mind most
24:10 people might not find interest in this
24:12 I think it's fascinating
24:15 walking to Russia back here
24:24 when the queers covered that album
24:24 a lot of bands have covered that album
24:26 love it just picture all these bands I
24:28 was in a band so I know how it is to
24:30 load in you pull behind the club you
24:32 have your trailer
24:34 on the back of a van pull up here park
24:37 at the end hopefully it'll come out to a
24:39 broken end vehicle if someone stole all
24:41 your personal stuff while you're inside
24:42 playing the show but just think about
24:45 all the famous people here Patty Smith
24:47 Blondie
24:49 I think a Bad Brains Bad Brains of cbgbs
24:52 the most insane live show it just it's
24:55 you can find you can find videos of them
24:57 playing
24:59 and misfits obviously you know just just
25:01 a ton of bands
25:03 drawing a blank on a lot of them and a
25:05 lot of even kind of Main Street bands
25:07 that have gone mainstream now too but I
25:09 definitely think of
25:10 you know Misfits obviously and Bad
25:13 Brains
25:14 but the Ramones number one I mean they
25:17 they defined
25:18 cbgb's along with other bands too a lot
25:21 of other bands got their start in here
25:23 as well and until they until they closed
25:25 their doors continue to play here
25:27 and I would imagine some of them
25:29 probably got their their van broken into
25:31 back here
25:32 and there's no telling these walls could
25:34 talk The Hoot nannies and hullabaloo
25:36 that went on in this back alley
25:39 cannot even comprehend it
25:42 you probably don't even want to know
25:43 honestly I was in a band I know some of
25:45 the hoop now he's at all the blues that
25:46 go on behind behind Phineas I kind of
25:48 don't want to go inside I kind of don't
25:52 want to I mean it just that's a
25:53 legendary spot and I know they've I've
25:56 seen some stuff online that they have
25:57 they've definitely got some nods to it
25:59 so I'm gonna walk through but I kind of
26:02 kind of just wish the original venue was
26:04 still there but progress things change
26:08 nothing stays the same it's probably
26:10 been a song written similar to that too
26:12 so I'm leaving the alley going back
26:14 around the front in this angle you can
26:16 see some of the skyline of Manhattan off
26:18 in the distance the skyscrapers poking
26:21 up
26:21 over the top of the trees
26:24 so I am going in for the first time ever
26:27 and aware Seabees used to be cbgbs used
26:30 to be
26:33 there's an amp right here is a marshall
26:34 right in front
26:35 and here's their store hours
26:42 all right a pretty successful visit in
26:42 there talking to one of the oh look at
26:44 this
26:55 well at least the marking in the
26:55 concrete there is that has that been
26:57 there since 73
27:03 if so that is insane what is this over
27:03 here
27:13 I guess that's a 73 I didn't realize it
27:13 dated back to 73 but maybe it did maybe
27:16 Hillary started it three years before
27:18 the Ramones well a year before that this
27:20 remote played here in 74.
27:23 could be there was a guy in there one of
27:26 the employees there's four or five
27:27 employees that said you're not allowed
27:28 to film the lady on the way it said no
27:29 filming and went to the back and I asked
27:31 about the bathroom so the bathrooms no
27:33 longer exist they've been torn out he
27:35 said they were possibly in the basement
27:36 and the record store possibly next door
27:39 he confirmed that the awning is in fact
27:40 the one that's the Rock and Roll Hall of
27:42 Fame so this awning is a new awning but
27:44 then also he shares some info with me
27:46 very good details about the interior
27:49 where certain things were where the
27:50 stage was so there are some things left
27:52 over they have these glass cases around
27:54 some of the sticker walls that were left
27:56 in there so they preserved a little bit
27:58 of it is an upscale place I mean it's
28:00 still music related it's definitely a
28:02 little more upscale than you would think
28:04 it would be they have the uh the air
28:06 ducts up top with some of the original
28:08 stickers also some people come in with
28:09 new stickers sometimes and put them on
28:11 the only thing the only things that will
28:12 be completely original behind the glass
28:14 up here so this is all original like
28:17 behind this like Plexiglas some of the
28:19 original flyers and original stickers
28:21 from back in the day including this
28:23 again
28:24 faintly I'll see where it says the name
28:25 of the venue there and I was kind of
28:28 looking to see where the stage was and
28:30 thankfully he showed me a photo and was
28:33 able to match up exactly where the stage
28:35 was and I was correct about the load-in
28:37 area being around the back so notice
28:39 this duct work up top there the ductwork
28:41 duct I believe it's Carlos got not a
28:44 duck like Donald Duck this is looking
28:46 back the other way from the stage so you
28:47 think of like all the bands that play
28:50 were looking that direction at the crowd
28:53 so that would be the that would be
28:55 looking from the stage and then looking
28:57 inward well that's actually farther in
28:59 towards the front entrance so that would
29:01 be more where the crowd was as well and
29:03 then towards around the back of the
29:05 station or the load-in area which is
29:06 around the back where the rocket rusher
29:08 photo was taken is the Statue of Liberty
29:11 and this right here is exactly where the
29:14 stage was almost where that like suit on
29:16 the mannequin is and that very fancy
29:17 guitar and the new framed posters and
29:21 whatnot this duct work up here duct work
29:23 I don't know how to say that but the air
29:25 condition vent work
29:28 is uh what I was kind of showing I'll
29:29 get you more of that later he said this
29:31 is actually from Primus that they put
29:33 and you could grab a number and you
29:34 could call if they needed to have
29:35 members of Primus which I guess was left
29:38 I don't know I don't know how they got a
29:39 hold of that but that's in there as well
29:41 so here is the again where the stage is
29:44 more of the angle
29:46 and you can match up if I notice the
29:49 roof line the loaded door was around
29:51 back where I was in that back alley and
29:53 here is a photo a cleaned up version the
29:55 Woodies of the woodwork has been changed
29:58 on the floor so the wood the top the
30:00 wood Down Below had to be replaced even
30:02 though it is a current modern day wood
30:04 floor
30:05 but this is what the stage looked like
30:07 so that's where HR for Bad Brains was
30:09 just going nuts you want to get nuts I'm
30:12 not he wasn't Batman or anything like
30:13 that but yeah I mean one of the most
30:15 insane live shows Bad Brains of CBG I
30:18 think was 82 and there's lots of other
30:20 foot you could find a lot of footage
30:21 tons and tons of footage of like iconic
30:24 bands that played it's iconic punk bands
30:26 and and rock bands have played inside
30:28 there but notice up top there you can
30:30 see you know the air-conditioned Vents
30:32 and all that so that's that's where the
30:33 stage was and here's a another
30:35 plexiglass that has some of the another
30:37 Plexi that has some of the original
30:38 stickers but this just blows my mind so
30:41 that is a cleaned up version before they
30:42 tore the stage out you know obviously
30:44 when there's a show there would be like
30:46 litter all over the ground and you know
30:48 fluids from the body and things like
30:50 that and just you know beer spilled beer
30:52 and snacks and food and trash and ripped
30:55 clothing and whatnot so this is a
30:56 cleaned up version but there is the
30:57 stage and behind it was the load in door
31:00 where the advance would park and that's
31:03 what it looks like modern day inside
31:05 just stored out I totally forgot the
31:07 name of the store but I'll go around the
31:08 awning and show it again but yeah cbgb's
31:11 lives on and uh at a modern store at
31:14 least at least it's being used for
31:15 something and the building wasn't torn
31:17 down that I will say is a good thing
31:18 yeah I just wanted to walk back by and
31:20 get the name they were very nice in
31:21 there but it was
31:23 kind of surreal being in there John
31:26 barbatos
31:27 315 Bowery we got one more spot I want
31:30 to go to that's kind of Italian I'm
31:32 walking through what is known as the
31:35 East Village and look over here
31:37 over here lurking in the shadows
31:48 I wasn't expecting that
31:48 also random thought
31:50 of the moment I love walking around New
31:53 York I love walking around the city it's
31:56 such a pedestrian town a pedestrian City
31:59 it's just so easy the lights only like
32:02 last like a few seconds each for the
32:04 cars and then you're just able to walk
32:06 across and almost all the streets are
32:09 one way so even
32:11 when the there's no traffic coming or
32:13 the traffic is heading one way you can
32:16 easily walk across because you don't
32:18 have two lanes of traffic going I don't
32:20 know if that makes any sense
32:21 but I just love strutting around the
32:24 tabs Trucking around the city I love it
32:26 a completely different vibe that if
32:30 you're driving and trying to find
32:31 parking trust me oh there's a lady over
32:33 there walking uh she's a dog walker
32:34 she's got like a dozen dogs that she's
32:36 taken out for a walk one thing I've also
32:38 noticed is everyone just kind of Minds
32:40 their own business when you're just
32:41 walking around you don't have like uh
32:43 you just get to where you gotta go and
32:46 everyone's got their headphones on
32:47 they're just like doing their own thing
32:50 I don't know just it's just like a
32:52 different vibe here than like La would
32:55 be where you're trying to like walk
32:57 around so the next spot is over on this
33:01 corner of Tompkins Square and East 7th
33:04 Street
33:05 and I was here years ago I was touring
33:07 in a band and we uh came by and got a
33:09 photo I don't even know if I even still
33:11 have the photo over here at the Joe
33:14 Strummer over here against this bar
33:15 restaurant is a mural from Joe Strummer
33:18 or dedicated to Joe schrammer from The
33:20 Clash and this was here back in 2012
33:23 when I came through or actually no it
33:25 would have been no it would have been
33:27 2012 it would have been 2008 2000 yeah
33:30 probably 2007 2008 2009 and it looks for
33:34 what I recall in my memory I thought it
33:36 was actually painted on the brick but
33:38 this appears to be on a block of wood
33:40 that's like into the side of the brick
33:43 but you know over time your memory kind
33:45 of remembers things a little bit
33:46 differently but I'm glad this is still
33:48 if the last time I was here too someone
33:50 had like spray painted some stuff on so
33:52 I'm sure it gets touched up from time to
33:54 time but I'm glad to see this is still
33:55 this is still here there also used to be
33:58 uh Joey Rome mural over by where Seabees
34:01 used to be but it was painted over so
34:03 they pick up painted over a few years
34:04 ago it was Joey wearing boxing gloves
34:07 but it's called and I've just been
34:10 walking a lot today been going for about
34:12 a mile roadside
34:14 beans
34:16 there's a throwback and I'm just walking
34:19 back to my hotel I don't think I'm even
34:20 gonna get at a Rideshare vehicle or
34:22 Subway or anything did I get in the old
34:25 steps in
34:26 walking in NYC and that's gonna do it
34:30 for today from New York City
34:32 thanks for watching I'll see you in the
34:33 next video the Vlog is
34:37 over
