0:02 welcome everyone Adam the whoo here
0:02 coming to you from Gary Indiana the
0:07 stomping grounds of a very young Michael
0:10 Jackson and that is what today's video
0:12 is going to be all about check this
0:16 place out
0:17 join me Shelley starting off with this
0:20 mural that has been placed on the side
0:22 of the building the Jackson 5 Michael
0:25 and his brothers who were all born here
0:28 had their first performances here and
0:31 lived here on August 29th 1958 the King
0:37 of Pop was born in this very Hospital
0:40 the building was established in 1927 but
0:44 current day like most the rest of this
0:47 town pretty much abandoned most the
0:50 windows are broken out or boarded up
0:56 it's interesting to think that one of
0:59 the biggest music icons of all time his
1:03 life began right in there this would
1:07 have been the front entryway and if we
1:10 peak up over the top you can see the
1:15 staircase there leading up into the
1:19 hospital and on ground level there are a
1:22 couple of accessible points that we can
1:26 peek at very moist and damp down in
1:29 there some paper records that have been
1:32 drenched by the elements
1:36 no telling what's documented in those
1:38 books if you're feeling daring enough it
1:42 would be easy to just jump down there
1:44 wade through the puddles and enter into
1:47 the building I however will not be doing
1:50 that today should take this opportunity
1:53 to tell you that this neck of the woods
1:56 has one of the highest crime rates
1:58 anywhere in the nation it's not
2:00 somewhere a tourist should be wasting
2:03 time dilly dallying around camera in
2:06 hand you just got to kind of see what
2:08 there is to be seen and continue moving
2:11 on passing the water tower now making
2:17 our way over to the former homestead on
2:21 the corner of the renamed Jackson Street
2:23 and Jackson family Boulevard is the
2:27 residence
2:30 right over here very tiny accommodations
2:33 for such a large family and while the
2:37 home has been cleaned up and restored
2:40 grass has been planted some hedges along
2:43 the sidewalk and even a little statue of
2:46 children playing it has been kept pretty
2:48 much how it was way back then and you
2:52 know that by just turning around and
2:54 looking at the neighbor's house right
2:57 over there it looks pretty much the same
2:59 two houses on the same block that are
3:03 nearly identical except this one house
3:07 the Jacksons just to give a little
3:09 perspective on its size here is a side
3:12 angle
3:13 well 2-bedroom 1-bath place down on the
3:17 ground
3:18 some bricks and placards have been
3:21 placed by the city and other family
3:23 members see the glove there in the
3:25 middle embedded in the concrete this was
3:32 dedicated from the office of the mayor
3:34 this shows him through some of the
3:36 different stages of his career as far
3:39 ride he's got the sunglasses on below
3:42 the fence line is a row of bricks people
3:45 come out here and share their thoughts
3:46 and memories by writing them right along
3:49 the edge you would like to read what
3:52 people have said or who has been through
3:56 they place their names memories where
4:01 they're from etc it is pretty neat that
4:04 people will come to a certain place that
4:08 they've never been before just to leave
4:10 their thoughts all along some brick the
4:14 world was better with you in it we love
4:17 you and miss you so much a few more on
4:21 this end as well
4:25 and I've heard that sometimes people
4:28 will scribble into the fence line of
4:30 course they repaint it because they
4:32 don't want you destroying the fence but
4:35 you can also see faintly down here there
4:38 are some inscriptions in the concrete
4:40 right here it says I love you
4:44 here's a few that have been written
4:46 since the last time it was repainted
4:50 April loves Michael and so does Adriana
4:55 the King of Pop stated right there in
4:59 the backyard are a couple other statues
5:01 there's a girl sitting on a little bench
5:04 with her pet dog and some deer they're
5:07 off in the background next to the shed a
5:09 couple locks have been bolted here and
5:13 some wooden hearts that have
5:16 inscriptions on them as well there used
5:20 to be a very large historical marker
5:22 right there you can see the base of it I
5:24 don't know why it's not there anymore
5:26 but it stood you know probably five or
5:29 six feet tall taking up the corner of
5:32 the yard but it's no longer there for
5:36 whatever reason it's gone at the end of
5:38 the sidewalk leading to the front door
5:40 it states and loving memory you gave us
5:44 a lifetime of love and has all the
5:47 family members inscribed parents Joseph
5:50 and Katherine brothers Jackie Jermaine
5:53 Marlon and Randy sisters Janet Latoya
5:56 and Rebbie there is a tree B re b bi e
6:01 it's a very big family it seems as if
6:05 anywhere someone can inscribe a memory
6:08 or a name they take that advantage by
6:12 placing it all along street signs and
6:15 the poles holding them check this one
6:20 out
6:20 there are hundreds
6:23 hundreds of memories and names written
6:26 all up all up the side of this a lot of
6:31 people have been out here corner of
6:36 these cross streets that's where it all
6:38 started in this neighborhood on this
6:41 corner in that house the Jackson's not
6:46 too far away from where they resided
6:47 short walk through those fields crossing
6:51 that empty parking lot and what is now
6:54 the abandoned Garnett elementary school
6:59 which is where they went to class years
7:02 later another organization took the
7:04 building over by the name of images of
7:06 hope but it is also closed grass has
7:10 grown up a sign of what once was even
7:16 though the brothers did a variety of
7:17 performances at school and a talent
7:20 shows one of their first as the Jackson
7:23 5 happened just across the street it is
7:26 now completely fenced off but this is
7:30 mr. Lucky's lounge a bullet hole has
7:34 been placed in the front window
7:38 designated by banners along the side
7:42 home of the first Jackson 5 performance
7:45 at one point there was a pool hall
7:49 billiards and they even served a
7:52 hamburger by the same name but through
7:56 these doors in 1964 history was made
8:01 very difficult to see but I zoomed way
8:04 in
8:14 as I pull back out you can see there is
8:14 a huge concrete piece blocking the door
8:19 not accessible you'll notice that
8:22 state's own a piece of the history
8:25 I heard the current owner was going to
8:27 sell off parts of the stage where the
8:29 performance happened I don't think that
8:32 ever came to be but it looks as if
8:34 Beelzebub himself might have been
8:37 interested now that I look at it I think
8:40 people have reached over and taken a
8:42 piece of the structure for themselves
8:44 pieces of the brick little souvenirs
8:47 have been taken one could say based on
8:50 the condition of the place that mr.
8:52 Lucky's has run out of luck it's seen
8:58 better days here's a little more of the
9:01 downtown area you can see now it's kind
9:04 of fallen by the wayside not in the best
9:08 shape these days quite a few stray dogs
9:11 I don't think there's a leash law in
9:14 these parts that's gonna do it for today
9:17 from Gary what was that noise Gary
