TDW 1817 - The End Of Patreon
As helpful as crowd funding has been in cutting down the heavy costs of travel expenses and creating these videos I've decided to express the fact that I do not feel comfortable with it anymore and respectfully ask those who have donated a few dollars each month to withdraw their pledges. Thanks for understanding . Heres to the future !

Welcome everyone,
0:02
Adam the Woo here. It's my second
0:05
channel, daily vlog channel. It's the
0:07
daily woo. I have a subject matter that
0:09
has been weighing heavily on me for
0:12
quite some time and I have not mentioned
0:14
it in all of 2017 and most of the end
0:19
squirrel. Hello. Hi. Patreon. What
0:23
Patreon is is is basically a
0:27
contributing mechanism for those who
0:30
want to support creators. It's always
0:32
been a hardpressed issue for me to ever
0:35
accept anything from anyone. That being
0:40
said, before I left California, the last
0:43
time when I was down in Orange County, a
0:45
couple months before I moved away, I
0:47
started hitting the road
0:49
again, it was with a heavy heart that I
0:51
did a vlog saying that I was going to
0:54
start a Patreon. In fact, couple weeks
0:57
before that particular vlog, I mentioned
1:00
how I was not really a fan. I did not
1:03
think it was a good
1:04
idea to accept anything from anyone
1:08
because there might be that mystique
1:10
that certain people not everyone only a
1:12
very small percentage will think or
1:16
assume or maybe even
1:18
justifiably are
1:21
those think that like I said justifiably
1:25
because there might be a degree of truth
1:26
to it that you owe them something in
1:30
return for their contribution and I
1:31
think there is a very very valid point
1:34
to that. I bring this up because since I
1:37
moved back to California, a lot of
1:39
hatred has been stewing in my corner. A
1:43
lot of negativity has really come to
1:47
fruition. People holding the Patreon
1:50
over my head. Now, to play devil's
1:52
advocate, I will say Patreon is amazing.
1:56
Just because I moved back to
1:57
California a couple days ago does not
2:01
mean that I have not been on the road
2:02
for a very long time. I did get the RV
2:04
back in December, but I've been on the
2:07
road since October of 2011, save for the
2:11
house I was renting down in Orange
2:13
County. Long time. October
2:16
2011. August 2011 is when I quit my job,
2:20
moved into my van. Man, it's been a long
2:24
tiring journey thus
2:27
far. And as time escalated, as things
2:31
progress and me traveling, I was
2:34
recommended very heavily by not only
2:37
friends, acquaintances, but also
2:40
vicarious folks on the internet that
2:43
they wanted to help out. Give a dollar
2:45
or two. How can we get this money to you
2:48
to help you with your travels?
2:52
And then they brought up the idea of the
2:53
Patreon and I just didn't really did not
2:56
think it was a good idea. I'm kind of
2:59
the person that wants to do everything
3:00
on my own, build something from the
3:02
ground up. But I gave in. I gave into
3:05
it. And if you watch those older vlogs
3:09
from gosh 2015, I was very very
3:13
passionate about anyone who decided to
3:16
go that route to donate to only give a
3:20
dollar or two. I said just give $1. Just
3:23
give $1 at the absolute most. $5. That
3:27
was my limit. $5 a month. thinking that
3:30
if I if someone was to have some
3:33
backlash towards me that they really
3:35
couldn't hold over my head if someone
3:37
was giving $5. That's way less than a
3:39
cable bill or renting a movie, buying a
3:42
DVD or a Blu-ray. That was my mentality.
3:45
And as of today, right now, it may have
3:48
changed a little bit, give or take a
3:50
buck or two, but I am receiving about
3:54
$1,800
4:00
1,800 a month currently. It's actually
4:00
gone up month by month by month, a
4:03
little bit. Couple bucks here, a couple
4:05
bucks there, every single month. And
4:07
right now it is at the
4:09
crescendo, the $1,800 mark, which is
4:14
man, that's that's a heck of a lot of
4:15
money. That's a lot of
4:18
money. That is a full-time job that
4:21
people are donating. And I know that
4:23
number seems astronomical cuz to me it
4:26
does as well, but you have to take into
4:29
consideration, once again, playing
4:30
devil's advocate here, there are
4:34
530 535. Don't quote me on that, but
4:37
around 530 people who accumulate that
4:42
number. And I pulled out the calculator.
4:44
You can do this as well. It averages out
4:46
to be
4:48
$341, give or take a penny.
4:51
$341. So the $5 plateau that I was
4:55
mentioning, everyone adhered to that.
4:57
They stuck to they tried to honor my
5:00
wishes to a degree and stayed under the
5:03
$5 average.
5:06
$341 per person per month. If you boil
5:09
that down per day, let's say there's 30
5:11
days in a month. It's about 11 cents. 11
5:16
cents a day for those, not everyone. 535
5:21
people out of the 137,000 subscribers
5:24
here on the Daily Woo, give or take.
5:26
These are all approximate numbers.
5:29
535 consciously decided, pulled into
5:32
their wallet to give 11 cents every day.
5:37
And you do a little bit more math. Take
5:38
the calculator out. 11 cents a day.
5:40
These vlogs are about 10 to 15. But
5:42
let's say the vlogs are 11 minutes.
5:44
That's one penny for every minute of an
5:47
edited vlog going and traveling that
5:50
those who want to contribute can
5:52
contribute. If there was a gentleman
5:54
here on the sidewalk playing guitar and
5:57
you enjoyed the sounds that he was
5:59
singing and coming out of his
6:00
instrument, you would probably throw a
6:02
buck in. Once again, devil's advocate. I
6:06
understand both sides of the coin. Now,
6:09
in light of recent events, the
6:12
combination of everything that I have
6:14
told you by me moving to California,
6:17
even with the promises of still
6:19
continuing to travel once I get things
6:21
settled down, get the home base here set
6:23
up, bringing the RV back, there is a lot
6:27
of flack in my direction, a lot of hate.
6:29
And I am not talking about what some
6:31
people consider to be trolls. And when I
6:33
say trolls, I do not mean those with
6:36
opinions. A troll is someone who has a
6:39
formulated game plan to belittle
6:41
someone. Not necessarily constructive
6:44
criticism, but someone who creates 20,
6:47
30, 40 YouTube accounts. So there'll be
6:51
10 or 15 comments within an hour period.
6:53
They basically sign in, sign out, leave
6:56
the comment, leave the thumbs down. All
6:58
that really is kind of entertaining to
7:00
me. It doesn't really bother me so much
7:02
because they will always have a big
7:06
chunk of hatred and negativity and
7:09
jealousy inside and that you can you can
7:12
remove that from your head because you
7:14
see it so so so very often. The thing
7:17
that bothers me the most are those who
7:20
have been watching for years and
7:22
supporting not financially but
7:25
supporting through watching the videos
7:27
and leaving comments. And when someone
7:29
who has always been in your corner
7:31
starts to see negative comments and then
7:33
they think, you know what, that person
7:35
who's being negative kind of has a
7:36
point, Adam is an ebagger. So, what I'm
7:39
here to say is even though I have not
7:42
mentioned the Patreon word in a year,
7:45
I'm not even kidding. Go back through my
7:47
past videos over the last year. In fact,
7:50
since I got Large Marge, I don't think
7:52
I've uttered that word P A T R E O N
7:56
until today. In fact, those who are
7:59
always addressing me as someone who is a
8:02
scam artist, they have
8:04
promoted that word more than I ever had
8:08
or have ever in the history of
8:10
existence. The only reason I'm bringing
8:11
it up today is because I never want to
8:13
hear that word again. I am here to
8:16
announce I want you to stop giving me
8:20
money on Patreon. So many people have
8:23
been so helpful with donating a couple
8:26
dollars every month. And that really
8:28
goes a heck of a long way with putting
8:30
gas in my former van, putting gas in my
8:32
RV, flying from place to place to place.
8:35
And you know, all those weird,
8:37
unusual roadside attractions and
8:41
museums, all those types of places cost
8:43
four, five, six, seven, eight, sometimes
8:45
$15 depending on what it is to get in.
8:48
Sometimes I'd hit three or four of those
8:50
in a day. places I wouldn't normally go
8:53
to. Basically, what I would do is rack
8:55
up my credit card debt and then once a
8:58
month you would get a payout from that
8:59
word, the P, not the P word you're
9:01
thinking of, the other P word. I would
9:03
take that, pay the credit card debt
9:05
down. That being said, I do not want to
9:09
discourage anyone from ever starting a
9:12
Kickstarter, starting a
9:14
Patreon. It's going that's what's going
9:16
to happen though because it is so
9:18
overwhelming. YouTube is so huge now. It
9:21
is so popular. In fact, VidCon is coming
9:23
up this weekend. Thousands of YouTubers
9:26
and different panels. They teach you how
9:29
to do well at YouTube, little tips and
9:32
tricks and whatnot. And one of the major
9:34
things that will be actually happening
9:36
there is you can sit and learn. One of
9:39
the panels is all about Patreon and
9:44
Kickstarter, how to fund yourself
9:46
through your supporters. I do not want
9:49
anyone I'm teetering here. Look, I'm
9:51
teetering right here on this. I do not
9:52
want anyone thinking that they have some
9:55
sort of crutch against the word. This
9:57
ebagger word drives me
10:01
absolutely
10:02
insane. It's a tip jar. It's simply a
10:06
tip
10:07
jar. Someone does something, someone
10:09
wants to help you out. And take this
10:12
into consideration if you are one of the
10:14
many who think that YouTubers and
10:18
content creators are mooching off those
10:21
that watch them. It's not a paid
10:24
subscription. It's free content. It's
10:26
simply something that someone says,
10:28
"Here, just just take this." Do you ever
10:31
have a friend? Let's let's say you met
10:33
someone that you admired or someone you
10:36
revered and you only you never really
10:39
had a chance to meet them. All of a
10:40
sudden, across the parking lot, that's
10:41
him. That's the person that you have
10:45
wanted to meet for so long. They're
10:46
walking in there, you're behind them in
10:48
line, and you say, "Hey, let me buy you
10:51
a drink. Let me buy you a large fry."
10:54
And they go, "No, no, man. No, no, no,
10:57
no. I don't need that." Would you not
10:59
take offense to that? If you want to do
11:03
something, you would be you would be
11:06
hurt. You want to show your support and
11:09
that's that's what it is. And it's sad
11:12
that I have to put an end to this. It's
11:13
sad that I have to say
11:16
please no more. It I I can't do it. I
11:19
cannot I had a hard time with this from
11:21
the beginning. I'm having a hard time
11:22
with it now. I've been thinking about
11:25
this for a very long time. And just in
11:27
recent days since I've decided to get a
11:29
place
11:30
here, I can't do it anymore. Patreon
