0:02 today number 27 of this current food
0:05 series this episode is going to feature
0:08 a place that started here in Southern
0:10 California in 1961 and branched out into
0:14 nearly 300 locations but there are only
0:17 two remaining I'm gonna go to those and
0:21 the spot of the very first location
0:25 inviting you to join me shove you
0:28 somewhere I wanted to go for quite a
0:30 while
0:31 and it's happening just getting my stuff
0:33 together and heading out
0:34 you're right big the foot we are gonna
0:36 cover quite a bit of ground today
0:38 luckily traffic's not too bad at the
0:41 cross streets of a 72 hundred block of
0:44 Garfield Ave in the 6300 block of
0:48 Florence Avenue and the city of Bell
0:50 Gardens just so happens to be one of the
0:55 last remaining active signs pointing
0:59 towards the drive-thru with Pioneer Pete
1:04 right up there the chef
1:08 with that delicious chicken in his left
1:11 hand holding it up to the heavens
1:14 pioneer take out that's the official
1:17 name but everyone just calls a pioneer
1:19 chicken
1:20 this is one of the two still open
1:24 locations and since I will be venturing
1:26 over to the other one just gonna get a
1:28 drink from this one and get my meal at
1:31 the secondary one look at that beautiful
1:35 building old school the signage has seen
1:38 some years it certainly has I am
1:46 reminded of quite a few movies and
1:49 television shows where these were
1:51 featured you've ever seen the intro to
1:53 Full House which those scenes were in
1:57 Griffith Park even though they
1:59 intertwined them with ones up in San
2:01 Francisco Michele is sitting on a
2:03 blanket and there is a pioneer chicken
2:07 box sitting next to her
2:10 also recall Charles Bronson wandering
2:12 the one that used to reside on the
2:14 corner of Hollywood and Western
2:15 Hollywood Boulevard and Western
2:19 approaching the punk rockers there at
2:24 that pioneer and of course Warren Zevon
2:26 immortalized the name of this place and
2:29 one of his famous songs
2:38 not many of these left that is a thing
2:38 of beauty right there I think I'm gonna
2:40 get one of those orange whip drinks
2:41 check out the seating arrangements in
2:43 here those are look at those antiques
2:45 they also have t-shirts and hats
2:46 available went ahead and picked up a
2:48 t-shirt in here I'll show you in a
2:51 moment
2:51 but I also got as stated inside and
2:55 orange I've had an orange bang I've had
2:58 an Orange Julius this is an orange whip
3:00 I also asked if they had any of the cups
3:04 with the logo on these have plastic cups
3:06 with the logo on it they no longer carry
3:09 those at least at this particular spot I
3:12 will check out the other when I head
3:14 over there and orange whip has never
3:17 been consumed by myself and the straw is
3:21 one of those little little bendy straws
3:23 going in
3:29 well that's good that's really close to
3:29 nothing that's more or less than orange
3:31 bang you can see the frothiness they're
3:34 exuding up from the cuff level
3:43 I won't officially know till I get over
3:43 there but I've heard rumors that this
3:46 beverage is not sold at the secondary
3:48 spot that's why I wanted to kind of tap
3:52 into it here another interesting story
3:54 about this place Michael J Fox when he
3:56 was starting his career lived in close
3:58 proximity to pioneer chicken and he was
4:04 he was low on money did not have a lot
4:07 of funds and as the story goes his phone
4:10 line was cut off could not afford to pay
4:13 the bill so he set up an office at a
4:16 payphone at his neighbor hoods spot just
4:21 outside a pioneer chicken and he would
4:25 when he was waiting to get the job of
4:27 family ties he would say what do you
4:28 think they're gonna call and he would
4:30 hang around didn't have according to him
4:33 did not have the cash to buy a meal so
4:35 he would just hang around smelling that
4:37 delicious food goodness got the call got
4:40 the gig of family ties and the rest is
4:43 history here's the t-shirt I purchased
4:45 it was $20 the drink was a little over 2
4:49 so like 23 bucks for for all of it but I
4:52 haven't eaten yet so I'm gonna add on
4:53 the food price to this adventure I know
4:56 I know it's what I was thinking I really
4:58 want to leave either but there's another
4:59 one we're on our way to right on this
5:01 corner of Echo Park and sunset used to
5:04 be the Pioneer market
5:07 it's now a Walgreens and that's where
5:11 pioneer chicken got its name because
5:13 right next to it was the first spot now
5:17 a pizza place 1961 building still
5:20 remains in fact it really looks almost
5:23 identical to the the other spot I was
5:26 just at they kept the building changed
5:29 the change of decor just a little bit if
5:33 you peek through those trees and get a
5:35 view of Echo Lake you see the fountain
6:00 this could be enforced to definitely be
6:00 enforced corner of Soto Street
6:05 and Whittier Boulevard
6:11 the sounds of sirens drifting off in the
6:13 background a unique looking building
6:17 it's painted a little bit differently
6:18 than the other the scheme of it open
6:23 seven days a week obviously the chicken
6:26 but also have fish there he is a fair
6:29 glistening in the Sun this one's taller
6:33 than the other this is probably a good
6:35 40 feet in the air just to give you an
6:38 example this is ground level it's it's
6:45 probably 10 15 feet above the roof line
6:48 and joining me at this particular spot I
6:50 and your chicken baby that's Sean Clark
6:53 I grew up on this I grew up on pioneer I
6:56 didn't think there were any left and
6:57 Adam told me there was a pioneer left I
6:59 go we got to go to Pioneer my god I
7:01 haven't been a pioneer in the police
7:03 last one I knew up was over by whacko on
7:05 Hollywood Boulevard there was like six
7:08 years ago I got torn down
7:10 sit right here I'm yeah that's signed
7:13 and look at this look at the color
7:15 scheme on this place yeah this one's a
7:17 little different than your normal color
7:18 scheme is red red white and black like
7:21 the old sign up there I don't know why
7:23 this one's yellow I've never seen a
7:24 yellow pioneer chicken it's kind of
7:27 yellowish orange I guess it's more
7:29 yellow that I don't know is it a legend
7:30 probably wasn't orange in it's turning
7:32 yellow
7:33 maybe the Sun the Sun is bleached it out
7:35 a little bit yeah there aren't many of
7:38 these left and there aren't many of
7:39 those this piece of signage left either
7:43 hey you know what's funny about that
7:44 time is there's so many locations that
7:47 used to be pioneer chickens that left
7:49 the shape of the sign and change into
7:52 something else
7:52 yeah like there's this one that the one
7:55 I grew up with it's a Chinese place -
7:59 it's like a continent you know or
8:01 something really yeah it's funny so
8:06 those little relics all over LA did you
8:07 can tell that sign is like 40 years old
8:10 that's old school that opened in 61 I'm
8:13 not sure wouldn't the mascot came about
8:15 he's been around as long as I remember
8:17 do you know his name a little trivia
8:19 question
8:21 no and I doubt anybody that works here
8:24 as a quick little they have the they
8:25 have the plastic cops here that's a good
8:28 sign let's see if I can get a plastic
8:29 cup if they have um song oh yeah and
8:31 they have a shirt I gotta sure that the
8:33 other Y got a t-shirt but that is a
8:34 that's a polish that's a color I'll do
8:38 it I'll do it I'll do a pole ok he's
8:40 very very happy right there yes they
8:42 have their and this is all it all closed
8:44 off inside here I'm like the other just
8:46 look at how vintage the Hat
8:48 advertisement is right there oh my
8:50 goodness this is I'm gonna go with the
8:52 3-piece take it to 2 or the 3 p's Center
8:54 I get the I get to let me get the
8:56 3-piece I just sound that the breast
8:58 doesn't come with a meal oh there it
9:00 goes my idea of right my person I
9:02 probably should have yeah I probably
9:03 should have thought this through it was
9:04 just informed they are all out of these
9:05 mugs for now come on alright so it goes
9:10 there
9:10 now what so I need a home run right yeah
9:14 then you push it off oh okay that was
9:16 nothing that's gonna keep trying pull
9:18 there you go okay there's your boom and
9:22 run there's your piece of gum where you
9:23 gonna eat it or save it as a souvenir
9:24 oh it's not a gum it's like uh it's a
9:27 it's just a bouncy behind room you got
9:29 it I got a home run now so you can't be
9:31 screwing around okay so you gonna hold
9:33 on to give it in one shot
9:34 oh one shot okay that's not cool hey
9:37 yeah I'd like to top are you sure that

9:45 oh it is moving you're right maybe it's

9:59 you got exciting if you thought they
10:01 turned it on for us I thought I thought
10:03 maybe likely these nerds put the sign on

10:18 future they have their own truck
10:31 made our way over to Hollenbeck Park the
10:31 city of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks
10:33 Department a beautiful pair look at that
10:36 you want to go in for two of them yeah
10:39 that's the easy safe I can already see
10:42 the skin you were talking about me yeah
10:43 yeah then this is what I'm talking about

10:46 this this this tasty goodness
10:56 you get no sides you just got these home
10:56 with the tuna I just went all carnivore
10:57 on this one alright let me see this is
11:00 what I'm dealing with
11:02 right here I will say your chicken looks
11:05 better than mine that one makes the
11:06 pressures this guy looks like he's been
11:08 sitting there for a while
11:09 this one looks fresher than that one
11:10 okay that's fair I'm gonna eat that one
11:12 last cuz it looks better look I went
11:14 with a three piece I got a leg a thigh
11:17 and hoping good be a better set of
11:19 breasts so random piece wings
11:24 it was young leg a wing that's a nuts of
11:26 mine that's a thigh I think and I got
11:28 the biscuit and she recommend the
11:29 cashier recommended so that they are
11:31 known for the Spanish rice spicy rice as
11:35 this is some sort of hell that's the
11:40 mashed potatoes and gravy oh that's a
11:41 very large portion mashed potatoes
11:43 actually yeah this tiniest amount of all
11:46 this is the side of mashed potatoes I
11:48 think that right
11:51 with the dream
12:04 was completed
12:04 pulled off basically
12:06 and reading the outer shell is like
12:14 famous Xfinity sir
12:16 the base week
12:21 the NDA you've had like a good sign up
12:25 there and they like I'll take a twenty
12:27 it like fly it
12:28 yeah it's what the outer shell of this
12:30 kind of almost like funnel cake anything
12:35 and I said that's what that's the thing
12:38 I loved about their chicken
12:46 I kind of feel like long john silver's
12:46 had
12:47 a little bit but there aren't any enough
12:50 to Ksenia not many
13:02 every time I go to Ohio for man
13:02 in Cincinnati technically Sharonville
13:06 there's a long time Silver's down the
13:08 street I go load up every time I'm
13:10 saving this mark for saving it
13:13 that's not saving saving means you don't
13:15 eat it immediately I'm saving my belly
13:17 okay thinking I would be disappointed
13:19 today it wouldn't live out your yeah
13:22 that's just I'm happy I like it so far
13:24 and we got the soothing sounds of the
13:26 freeway behind us this is a fog
13:50 it's a unique flavor it's a unique
13:50 texture for fried chicken
13:56 I have no idea why they all start going
13:56 out of business ma'am
13:59 I will say this it does seem to be sort
14:03 of a trend I've seen with the pioneers
14:05 over the years that they get really
14:08 rundown looking like there's not much
14:10 upkeep I don't know if they're corporate
14:15 owned or a third independently owned
14:17 these days but right it's plenty all
14:20 these people are commenting about you
14:22 and me doing a video together
14:24 because we're both known for location
14:26 videos for filming locations yet we're
14:29 not doing anything coming we're just
14:31 eating a voice or something
14:36 I'm sure something is filmed at that
14:37 time you rejected I'm not disappointed
14:39 in this I would get this chicken again
14:47 I said find their chicken pop-up and
14:47 movies all the time
14:48 right from the background we would call
14:50 in at the top of your head
15:01 I won't say that you see one of their
15:02 best friends
15:04 be wrong I think it was across from the
15:06 burger place yeah I'm not cool yeah
15:08 there was a pioneer chicken yeah
15:26 two hundred and seventy give or take
15:26 locations down to two
15:28 really
15:31 dude when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s
15:34 growing up in Southern California the
15:36 pioneers were everywhere I've never seen
15:38 a necklace and it's against it man
15:41 this is aah blows that that was dance
15:44 yeah it a complete piece
15:50 let's see I got but I was trying too
15:50 long you don't really see a lot of flies
15:52 in Southern California
15:53 I mean whose coast why have you cannot
15:56 eat outdoors
15:57 their education princess
16:01 that is kind of happy to see our little
16:04 friend
16:11 they say finger looking good they mean
16:14 it
16:18 they're not in the company step with

16:24 that's not that's mashed potatoes and
16:26 gravy that's just it's more gravy than
16:29 anything

16:44 get kind of faulty metal to finish this

17:36 everything greed I'm not a big fan of
17:37 Popeyes Chicken I do like their chicken
17:40 today I went to you don't like the spice
17:41 I just felt really care for their
17:43 chicken like they're regular pieces or
17:46 them so if there was a pioneer of
17:48 Popeyes next door trimmer to go to the
17:50 Pioneer here sure
