0:03 welcome everyone adam who here as a
0:03 recording of this friday april 29th
0:06 2022 a very overcast
0:09 somewhat dreary day here in nebraska i
0:12 left lincoln about 45 minutes or so and
0:15 driving
0:16 i am now in millbrook
0:19 and say hello
0:21 to the world's largest
0:24 covered wagon in existence
0:30 a former gas station
0:32 built in the early 70s closed in the
0:35 late 90s
0:37 used to have some big wheels on either
0:39 side those have been removed and at one
0:41 point
0:42 there was a muffler man that stood right
0:44 over here in another building
0:46 it has seen better days but the covered
0:48 wagon portion
0:50 still exists
0:52 that is interstate 80 over there i will
0:54 be taking interstate 80
0:56 many miles at least probably four to
0:58 five or more hundred
1:01 miles commuting and i will veer off at
1:03 different exits and see what i can find
1:05 just like this going through nebraska
1:08 and into wyoming
1:13 and as always i'm inviting you
1:16 to join me i am covering a lot of miles
1:19 on this road trip to be honest
1:21 i'm traveling a little too fast i should
1:22 have left a couple days earlier to get
1:24 to my destination
1:26 but i'm making it work join me
1:29 shall you gotta love this relic visa and
1:32 mastercard all rusted out
1:34 also i stand corrected
1:36 this is a town of milford not millbrook
1:39 like i stated i looked it up
1:41 i was incorrect
1:44 got the standing water over here oh
1:47 maybe one of these poles
1:52 is where it probably was right here is
1:52 where the feet
1:54 it is
1:56 of the muffler man was
1:58 and are these the muffler man's
2:00 legs
2:02 yes
2:04 relics of the past
2:08 i almost
2:10 stuck my feet down that mud there
2:19 some birds are up top there if they made
2:19 a nest the top portion
2:42 oh that's cool there's a us map
2:42 right down here and made out of tile
2:45 obviously someone has spray painted over
2:46 it
2:47 but that's awesome
2:49 so when you go in
2:51 on the floor they got a title of the u.s
2:52 map
2:53 and someone's doing a road trip there
2:55 that's kind of what that's probably i-80
2:57 there
2:58 made a tile
3:15 this would be a gas station and a
3:15 mechanic shop
3:18 it was someone's dream to open this
3:21 as with a lot of roadside attractions
3:28 and after they passed on it just fell by
3:28 the wayside
3:37 this is awesome
3:37 wow
3:39 massive this thing is massive truly i'm
3:42 not going to argue with the statement
3:44 that this is the world's largest covered
3:46 wagon
3:51 this york water tower looks like a hot
3:51 air balloon it's made to look like a hot
3:54 air helium balloon
4:06 veered off the interstate
4:07 into a small town
4:12 the town of mccool
4:15 named after a railroad official named
4:17 daniel mccool
4:19 many years ago
4:27 it was the town's name that really drew
4:27 me into
4:28 veering off to check it out
4:31 once i get here very interesting
4:32 downtown
4:34 with this little silo
4:45 building the community of mccool
4:45 technically it's
4:46 cool junction
4:49 i like this building here
5:02 right here on the corner
5:02 old barn back there
6:13 nathan martin and robert martin
6:13 were struck
6:15 by arrows right here
6:17 and they pinned them together
6:24 fell from their horse
6:24 but survived
6:26 they were pinned together
6:32 the incident happened approximately 800
6:32 feet northwest or this point
7:23 hello cows
7:23 how's it going
7:30 doing all right back there cows
7:30 all right i'll see you
7:36 going directly over interstate 80
7:36 is the archway i've never been inside
7:49 one thing i am really interested in
7:49 about this
7:53 it was in a movie i really liked called
7:54 about schmidt jack nicholson hard to
7:56 believe that movie is almost 20 years
7:57 old
8:04 personal favorite of mine
8:04 it's a little bit different
8:06 type of film for jack nicholson
8:12 in fact i don't even know how well it
8:12 did
8:13 i think a lot of people probably didn't
8:15 really understand the movie but i got it
8:17 it resonated with me
8:19 and there are
8:20 there's a moment in the movie
8:22 where after his wife passes
8:25 he takes the rv that they had bought
8:26 together they were going to go on road
8:28 trips and he went on a road trip
8:30 kind of like i'm on a road trip now and
8:32 more or less
8:36 and he stops off in a lot of places and
8:36 where the place he stops off at
8:38 is the archway here so i'm gonna go
8:39 inside never been in here yep take a
8:41 look at this did you know the archway
8:43 was a filming location for the 2002 it
8:45 has been 20 years about schmidt starring
8:48 nicholson
8:50 and there's his rv that he parked
8:52 outside
8:53 and went up the massive escalator into
8:55 this exhibit
9:08 this escalator is something else the
9:08 size of this escalator look at this
9:17 this is a pretty amazing setup
9:17 this attraction that just goes over the
9:19 interstate
9:20 you go up this very tall escalator
9:23 into a wagon and then the wagon look
9:25 appears as if the wagon takes you off
9:27 through the story going up the escalator
9:29 now
9:30 this guy's climbing up the side
9:33 wants to get to the top
9:42 yeah directly through
9:45 this goes directly through the covered
9:47 wagon a lot of covered wagons on today's
9:49 episode
10:01 okay
10:01 i made it to the top not going in was
10:03 not expecting all this to be in here
10:06 i'll be honest
10:07 got the flag there
10:09 get some inclement weather off in the
10:11 distance
10:13 this is very well done oh look there's a
10:15 lightning
10:16 going through
10:24 you're the horses
10:24 oh my gosh this place is awesome
10:36 oh
11:13 down here are some 49ers
11:13 right up there etched in the wall it
11:15 says 49ers
11:17 this guy has a pipe right there and
11:20 there's some information there's also
11:22 there's also this they'll give you that
11:23 just kind of shares some info and it's a
11:25 kind of like a walking tour that you can
11:28 do we can also read
11:33 as well if that's your if that's your
11:33 fancy
11:43 i really like this place a lot
11:43 and honestly going on going down
11:45 interstate 80 you wouldn't really even
11:47 know what this is so much
11:50 you wouldn't even have any clue
11:52 that all this was up here
11:53 going over the top of the interstate
12:00 and i walk back over to this room
12:03 seems as if the weather pattern has
12:04 changed and now it's sunny
12:11 it was stormy in here
12:12 now not stormy
12:14 pretty neat
12:23 over here in this window
12:26 is a gold pan
12:28 right down here this is a gold pan you
12:30 see little
12:31 nuggets of gold in there and there's a
12:33 pick there that they use for
12:35 you know
12:36 picking a way to find the gold
12:50 oh i thought it was i thought that was
12:50 all of it but
12:51 i'm entering another
12:53 section
13:38 i hear the train
14:00 and now back down another escalator
14:00 back down to ground ground level out of
14:02 the arch
14:05 and as i'm going down the escalator
14:06 there were a couple other exhibits on
14:07 the way out
14:09 one basically
14:11 dedicated to road trips and travel and
14:13 the lincoln highway and also a little
14:16 section over here that has a drive-in
14:18 theater you know the old drive-in
14:20 theater style and a diner where there's
14:23 even someone behind the counter ready to
14:25 serve yourself you know a little a meal
14:27 and
14:28 some breakfast or even possibly a piping
14:31 hot caffeinated beverage yeah i really
14:32 like the theming
14:34 seeing this seeming through is pretty
14:36 pretty dang cool
14:37 i highly recommend not bypassing this
14:39 place if you're on i-80 and overlooking
14:41 the escalator i went in on the escalator
14:44 i just descended from
14:46 and now
14:47 the final escalator
14:50 to depart
14:53 exit through the gift shop and kearney
14:55 nebraska is where this is technically
14:59 located
15:00 and here's something i never realized
15:03 nebraska because
15:05 they're so sweet could be a real beehive
15:07 of activity i never realized that bees
15:10 were a nebraska thing
15:12 i guess so a nice little stop off for
15:14 sure
15:15 kind of gave me some spaceship earth
15:17 vibes obviously there's no animatronics
15:20 in a totally different subject matter
15:22 but kind of gave me give me those vibes
15:23 and a couple of spots in there
15:27 all right moving on also
15:29 admission fee was 12
15:31 should also mention that as well
15:37 back on the interstate
15:37 got a lot of ground to cover
15:39 also when cruising through nebraska
15:42 it is a must listen to this album
15:46 my favorite bruce springsteen album
15:48 just saying
16:04 there is a start and a finish line
16:04 here on this road
16:06 in gothenburg
16:16 which has one of the original pony
16:16 express
16:18 buildings
16:20 right over here in this park
16:23 wow an original pony express building
16:44 this old station once stood at the upper
16:44 96 ranch west of here
16:47 okay so it was moved
16:50 oh it's moved and restored
16:52 by the gothenburg post number 64.
16:58 but this is where the pony express would
16:58 go here's the route st joseph to
17:00 marysville to fort kearney
17:03 laramie lake city
17:09 salt lake city all the way over to
17:09 sacramento
17:10 and looks as if the door is open could
17:12 go inside
17:20 i see there's a bee right down there
17:20 underneath that flower
17:29 there's another placard with the
17:29 information
17:30 wow i love that
17:33 pony express where are you from i'm from
17:36 florida florida near orlando
17:44 every day
17:44 well
17:45 we only stay open until three today but
17:47 this month but next month we'll be open
17:49 until six okay
17:52 yeah
17:53 do you know about the pony express i
17:55 know a little bit about it well you know
17:56 it only lasted for 18 months
17:59 only a year and a half really yeah
18:02 telegraph lines kind of put them out of
18:04 business they made it out to california
18:05 with the telegraph blinds
18:08 yeah we went from st joseph missouri to
18:11 sacramento california i saw that outside
18:14 there was a map i didn't realize it went
18:15 all the way to sacramento that's pretty
18:17 neat through solutions every 10 to 12
18:19 miles so they could change horses
18:22 and then every 80 to 100 miles they had
18:24 what they call the home station and
18:26 that's where your writers would change
18:36 yeah but only lasted for 18 months
18:36 yeah in my mind i thought it was
18:37 something that went on for like a decade
18:39 but wow 18 months
18:41 that's interesting
18:46 it was more like dollars for a half
18:46 ounce of mail
18:48 back then that was very expensive that's
18:50 what they would charge that's what they
18:52 charged and so it was mainly mainly
18:54 government mail they carry
18:56 because this was right this was uh you
18:59 know they wanted to get messages out to
19:01 california
19:03 from the east they had a railroad up to
19:05 the missouri river but on this side
19:07 there was nothing yet saw this really
19:10 and as soon as the telegraph lines were
19:12 completed out to california
19:14 the ponies went away
19:20 ended up getting a few things and got
19:20 some free stickers as well
19:22 stickers are free bought a magnet also
19:26 purchased a magnet
19:28 and the train going by kind of adds to
19:31 the ambiance as well
19:33 pretty neat little stop off
19:43 drove another half hour or so and have
19:43 arrived at fort cody
19:46 named after buffalo bill cody who's
19:48 standing right there
20:09 okay it says inside there is a buffalo
20:09 bills wild west in miniature
20:13 american folk art at its finest
20:25 look at this guy's all along the the top
20:25 there and of course the hotel sign
20:28 properly placed
20:30 it kind of
20:31 kind of ruins the vibe just a little bit
20:35 the hotel side probably was not there
20:37 when this place was built
20:47 oh that's not good
20:47 an arrow in the tucus
20:56 peeking up over that lookout tower or
20:56 someone
21:01 also someone there and that
21:01 is a tourist trap
21:04 cute pretty neat inside of course they
21:06 have a gift shop where you can get all
21:07 kind of different products and
21:09 snacks and things for the road trip and
21:11 whatnot when you're going down i-80
21:13 there's also a lot of the miniatures in
21:15 here and a lot of
21:17 buffalo bill cody stuff kind of
21:19 scattered around through as well
21:22 kind of a neat little stop-off never
21:24 been in here before this is right up my
21:26 alley all this stuff
21:29 this is the kind of stuff i really enjoy
21:30 when i'm on a road trip just traveling
21:32 along
21:32 seeing stuff like this you can also go
21:34 out back you can actually step out back
21:36 to even more displays by going through
21:38 that door there's a bison
21:45 and peeking up over the top of the shack
21:46 looks to be
21:47 a muffler man
21:54 i feel like i need to look inside here
21:54 and see what's in here oh
21:56 there are some mannequins
22:02 take a look
22:10 i love this stuff so much
22:10 look at this indian muffler man yes
22:13 that is so freaking cool
22:20 did not know this is gonna be back here
22:20 but i love it
22:25 and i've stated this before but
22:25 a muffler man is given that name because
22:28 you can almost just imagine if you will
22:30 a muffler
22:32 basically promoting and advertising
22:34 you know a gas station a fuel station
22:36 mechanic shop more specifically
22:40 you can almost picture how they would
22:42 have mufflers
22:44 right there
22:45 so the muffler would be right here in
22:47 that hand
22:48 and then the pipe from the muffler would
22:50 be in that hand
22:51 hence the name mufflerman
23:41 they have landed
23:41 they've landed
24:03 equipped with lights
24:03 around the rim
24:05 i don't see that every day
24:19 peace i also need fuel four dollars and
24:19 nine cents a gallon got the self-pumping
24:22 neck and a mechanism there
24:24 and the name of this place is
24:27 called
24:30 it's called
24:30 fat dogs you are nowhere
24:34 never seen this never seen a gas station
24:36 called fat dogs before
24:38 it's also very very windy
24:42 i think there's even a high wind
24:43 advisory on the way up direction i'm
24:45 heading
24:50 those weather clouds over there in the
24:50 distance do not look very kind
24:54 going right into them
25:50 over in the distance there is the chapel
25:52 water tower
26:03 a big ice cream cone
26:03 someone's yard
26:09 water tower's over there
26:09 in this park in kimball nebraska
26:15 some frisbee golf
26:15 courses here
26:20 and at the moment
26:20 the volleyball courts are not being
26:22 used and also a really large
26:27 dismantled
26:29 former
26:30 missile
26:31 just sitting here
26:41 right in the center point of this entire
26:41 property
26:47 looks like there's even the engine
26:47 down there
26:52 well the rocket boosters i should slide
26:52 out the engine
26:54 yeah take a look
27:04 oh i see some pigeons up there
27:04 some birds up there
27:32 pretty much every dog in the backyard of
27:32 all those houses
27:34 is barking probably barking at me
27:36 wondering
27:37 why i'm over here
27:39 looking at this but how can i not be
27:45 look at this thing
27:45 oh it's getting gusty and windy too very
27:48 gusty and windy today and just down the
27:50 road a bit says
27:52 the labyrinth
27:54 all are welcome into the labyrinth
27:57 when i first saw the sign
28:00 i thought maybe there would be a maze or
28:01 a labyrinth there
28:03 but possibly that's just the name of the
28:05 organization
28:06 it's not elaborate well
28:08 this building might house the
28:11 organization called the labyrinth
28:14 but that is a basketball court right
28:27 okay there's a sign here
28:27 no this is a
28:28 church that's an episcopal church no
28:31 nothing about the labyrinth on that sign
28:34 what is the labyrinth got back on the
28:36 interstate which is right over there but
28:38 then veered off again
28:41 on the state line road that turns onto
28:42 this road
28:44 because i am about oh it is windy
29:04 take a look at this old fuel station
29:04 here
29:10 close down now see see better days but
29:10 it has the nebraska wyoming line
29:18 i went up saw this and turned around
29:18 it's on that same little little road oh
29:19 i got a train coming by
29:22 nice
29:34 it is incredibly windy i have my hand
29:34 cupped over the
31:15 wow this is a treasure trove of gas
31:15 pumps
31:17 since 1924 at pete's service station
31:21 and that's the downtown over there
31:29 it's a lot of gas pumps
31:29 and up the way is a few miles is this
31:32 home
31:34 that has a tp incorporated
31:37 into its architecture
31:55 pretty interesting
31:56 also
31:57 on the side of the hill classic car
32:00 alert
32:06 by pulling into today's destination
32:06 cheyenne
32:08 elevation 6062
32:11 there's a train up here
32:13 ended up going a total of 443
32:16 miles
32:18 just looked up the distance
32:23 a little shy of 500 that's pretty much
32:23 the pace
32:24 i've been going on each day on this road
32:26 trip
32:40 i'll see you in the next video the vlog
32:40 is over
