0:04
welcome everyone Adam the woo here as
0:05
the recording of this it is Tuesday May
0:08
21st 2024 I have decided to take the
0:11
short commute celebration over to
0:13
matland Florida a place that I've been a
0:16
couple times mostly when passing through
0:18
a suburb if you will of the greater
0:20
Orlando Florida area but mland has a few
0:25
quaint cute historical things of
0:28
significance one being
0:30
a road that runs right around Lake Lily
0:34
right here which was the original Old
0:37
Dixie Highway which was the first
0:41
thare northward up through Florida and
0:44
then Southward there's not a whole heck
0:46
of a lot of it left there is an
0:48
abandoned section that you can drive on
0:51
Way north of here 100 miles north of
0:53
here 80 90 90 give or take miles from
0:56
where I'm at but there's also a spot
0:59
right over here here that has turned
1:00
into a walking trail so I'm going to
1:02
check that out first and then also just
1:04
see what downtown maand looks like have
1:06
a maand day and then maybe pop over
1:09
towards other areas of the greater
1:10
Orlando area join me good to have you
1:13
here shall you corner of Lake Lily and
1:16
South matland AB kind of decided when I
1:20
am home I got a lot of travels coming up
1:22
but when I'm home I need to really start
1:25
exploring some of these small
1:28
communities not really I mean I do a lot
1:30
of towns that are desolate empty
1:34
forgotten but I also need
1:36
to hop over to some that are
1:40
thriving that aren't really paid much
1:43
attention to unless you live in them and
1:45
this is one of them
1:47
matland Florida so somewhere along here
1:50
is the original Road I'm going to
1:53
guess well I probably shouldn't guess or
1:55
assume but you know what they say when
1:57
you assume something
2:03
but somewhere along here is the original
2:03
brick this is not
2:05
it I got to find this original brick and
2:09
as The Story Goes I was reading online
2:11
they paved over it and then the
2:14
city decided that they would remove the
2:18
pavement and expose the original brick
2:21
so it's kind of neat they did that some
2:23
of the brick Pathways may be rough
2:25
uneven Slippery When Wet
2:37
Park got some Cypress knees right here
2:37
usually when there are cypress
2:40
trees there are smaller
2:43
versions below them there's a squirrel
2:45
climbing around up there in that cypress
2:47
tree Cypress
2:53
knees she stepped on a
2:53
stick crack that stick okay where the
2:56
new brick meets the Old Brick this is
3:00
the original brick right
3:07
here now it is a walking
3:07
path but you can
3:09
see the age has is definitely starting
3:12
to show here on the brick again they
3:15
paved over it cement and they removed
3:19
it Lake Lily drive this road was the
3:23
first direct route from Northern Florida
3:24
to matland followed mland Aven on the
3:26
west side of Lake Lily continued on was
3:28
now US Highway
3:30
192 during Second C War us use this
3:34
Trail to connect the forts along its
3:37
route the road became part of the Dixie
3:39
Highway which opened in 1925 and ran
3:42
from Salt St Marie Michigan to Miami
3:47
holy cow that's a long
3:50
way and 27 the road was joined to the
3:53
blackbear trail to at Lake Lily boat
3:56
names describe the road from this point
3:58
south bricks recover by Asphalt in the
4:00
1960s in 1998 the asphalt was removed
4:03
just imagine this
4:05
road it's built in
4:07
1915 you use your imagination a little
4:10
bit Picture People traversing traveling
4:14
or horsedrawn carriages going down this
4:16
later
4:17
automobiles on
4:25
this now that I said that out loud yeah
4:25
I guess there would have been horong
4:26
carriages on this and Automobiles
4:28
obviously automobiles
4:44
here and it's just amazing to me that I
4:44
have never come out here and done this
4:46
before it's right in my own backyard
4:48
more or less passed by it many times but
4:52
never
4:53
stopped I also like the fact that they
4:56
left it all
4:57
rough or brought back the roughness of
5:00
it there are signs as you walk along
5:02
saying that it's going to be a rough
5:04
ride if you're on a bike pushing a
5:07
carriage pushing a stroller or a
5:10
carriage you could stroller or
5:13
Carriage pool or
5:27
love it's a museum up there there's a
5:27
crow going by oh there's like a couple
5:28
little museums over here this is called
5:30
the Waterhouse resident
5:32
Museum it's a cool house like something
5:36
out of Children of the Corn but yeah
5:38
that is a cool freaking house couple
5:41
other historical ones over there too
5:43
right here along the
5:46
water I see a placard up there look at
5:49
that window right
5:51
there the
5:53
shutters kind of
6:00
open oh this is a hisor torical
6:00
moment a little leaf blowing on off the
6:04
first Little Old Dixie Highway through
6:07
town meeting of the
6:28
eras the Waterhouse
6:35
residence Pioneer settler and Carpenter
6:35
William H Waterhouse built this resident
6:37
in freaking 1884 started a new life in M
6:40
with his wife and two children step
6:41
inside and tour this beautiful restored
6:43
home capturing a moment in time learn
6:44
how William Sarah Charles and Stella
6:47
Middle Class flam to the late Victorian
6:49
period settled in the new Florida
6:51
Frontier in shape Ma's history welcome
6:53
to the Waterhouse family
6:56
residents enjoy your visit
7:07
sad
7:07
Trumbo built in 1884 property has been
7:10
placed on the national register of
7:11
historic places by the US Department of
7:13
the Interior back in
7:16
1983 see the stairwell there I'm peeking
7:19
through the front window
7:33
on the side door there shutter here this
7:36
kind of you know what kind of reminds me
7:37
of the Christmas Story house it's
7:39
nothing like the Christmas Story house
7:40
but just the the way the porch is this
7:43
Christmas Story house you walk up leg
7:45
lamp in the front window you walk up
7:47
this you go in this but there's another
7:48
door around the side this is the only
7:50
section that reminds me of the Christmas
7:52
Story house in Cleveland but yeah I
7:53
don't know why I just turned this corner
7:55
they gave me flashbacks to that a
7:57
learning garden plants featured in the
7:59
garden a variety common found only in
8:01
the Victorian
8:02
era for purposes such as flavoring
8:05
dishes candle making and healing
8:22
wounds I hear a
8:22
train I hear a train crossing somewhere
8:32
it's over that way somewhere oh there it
8:35
is right there look see through the
8:51
Museum historic Workshop built in
8:51
1883 this was Mr water houses
8:54
woodworking construction business he had
8:56
a business going out of here he helped
8:59
build the town to main them both
9:00
literally and figuratively as a
9:02
well-respected carpenter in town for 36
9:04
years carpentry shop house woodworking
9:06
tools and continues to pass on tradition
9:09
of craftsmanship through Tours and hand
9:12
handson
9:14
programs this was his workshed and look
9:17
at the roof up here pretty awesome got
9:19
the grass grow on the roof
9:28
there well more like plants going out of
9:28
the roof
9:36
you see something like this over at
9:38
Epcot if you're in a world showcase back
9:40
at the Norway Pavilion they have
9:42
a little snack shop there where there's
9:46
grass and foliage growing out of the
9:56
roof this looks like a little bit newer
9:56
building it's a studio of some sort
10:24
closed used to be used for Creative
10:24
Endeavors inside
10:26
there no longer utilize or at least
10:29
currently not
10:35
utilized you know obviously this was a
10:36
long time ago but just kind of try to
10:38
put your brain back in time this house
10:41
was built in the mid 1880s late
10:45
188s 30 years later this is way before
10:48
Leaf
10:50
flowers gentleman built the house lived
10:53
here with his
10:54
family he was here for three decades
10:57
give or take and then all of a sudden
11:01
Old Dixie Highway a highway comes
11:04
through not obstructing your view cuz
11:06
I'm sure it was very beautiful but
11:08
having Travelers going from the north to
11:10
south south to
11:12
North after three decades of living here
11:14
rearing a family creating some memories
11:18
seeing their own progress with the Old
11:21
Dixie Highway coming right between his
11:23
front yard and Lake
11:25
Lily you see it now and you just think
11:28
oh yeah it's just two different it's an
11:29
old it's an old house it's an old brick
11:33
road I always trying to put myself in
11:35
the scenario of the person here at that
11:39
time not even no not thinking of the
11:41
current current state sometimes I do
11:44
that sometimes my brain can wrap my head
11:46
around it and sometimes it kind of Falls
11:49
flat but anyway just putting that out
11:55
there and then it continues to go
11:56
straight that way it does not follow
11:57
where the leaf lower guy is it continues
12:00
this way the Old Brick and connects what
12:03
is now the paved Road up
12:05
there this turns into Black Bear
12:09
Trail sleep flow the Black Bear Trail so
12:12
name because it ran through the natural
12:14
habitat of the black
12:16
bear it's cranking that
12:24
thing April 1927 members of the
12:24
association marked the new route through
12:26
maand along what is now 179
12:34
2 oval background on both sides
12:34
telephone polls along the road this join
12:36
this road join the Dixie Highway at Lake
12:38
Lily and both names describe this road
12:40
from this point south Black Bear Trail
12:43
ran from Quebec Canada to St Pete in
12:47
Miami that is a
12:51
long long
13:00
road I don't know this just really
13:00
fascinating to me pretty dang cool these
13:02
trees through here are beautiful it's
13:04
like overhanging
13:11
trees you're exiting out the original
13:11
Highway Trail merging of the Black Bear
13:15
Trail and
13:22
the Lake Lily Park sign right
13:22
there Old Dixie
13:30
Highway beautiful spot beautiful SP spot
13:30
ah more information here historic Road
13:32
around Lake Lily was first used as a
13:33
Native American path became military
13:36
Supply Route Fort Melon now Sanford and
13:38
Fort Gatlin now Orlando Fort Gatlin now
13:42
Orlando G Orlando used to be Fort
13:45
Gatland Fort matland east of the park is
13:48
now matland there's a resting stop on
13:50
this
13:51
route the first gred Brick Road in the
13:54
State of Florida in 1916 the other one
13:56
said 15 16 19151 16
13:59
historic Road has always been the center
14:01
of activity in the area from it's
14:02
original as a watering hole to use for
14:05
laundering clothes during the 19th
14:06
century notice St John's hole this is St
14:09
John's hole come down here clean your
14:12
clothes way before washers and dryers
14:15
today is used for recreation history
14:16
education and festivals enjoy your visit
14:18
to Historic Lake Lily Park I am it's a
14:22
little gazebo over here but then there's
14:24
also this enclosed fenced off area
14:27
called The Gabby
14:30
basket a Gabon basket that is new to me
14:35
it's a U-shaped and made of multiple
14:37
Gabon baskets filled with lime rock also
14:41
known as a rip wrap post treatment a rip
14:44
wrap post treatment system structure
14:47
typically extends on the lake from a
14:48
shoreline is built elevated slightly
14:50
above the water surface filters storm
14:54
Waters something you'd see out of it
14:56
Penny wise would crawl out of there
14:59
final purpose of the system is a visible
15:00
chamber wall promotes a curious to
15:02
discover its purpose fostering an
15:04
environmental conscious mindset serve
15:06
the lake for future generations to
15:19
out looks like it's might not be doing
15:19
what it's supposed to be doing or maybe
15:21
it is doing what it's supposed to be
15:22
doing yeah I'm glad there's a photo cuz
15:24
it looks nothing like it does in the
15:26
photo it looks like it's completely full
15:27
of water Maybe because of the rain the
15:29
last few
15:31
days that's what it would look like if
15:33
it was
15:35
not filled with water right
15:39
there
15:47
yep yeah I can picture Pennywise
15:47
crawling in and out of there it could be
15:49
you know you be over there looking
15:51
across looking into this and all of a
15:53
sudden he sticks his clown likee face
15:55
out of there of course he's submerged in
15:57
water now so he be drowning but
16:04
well they all float down here you'll
16:04
float
16:05
too they really bad Penny wise I'm
16:24
pressure I see you down there Turtle I
16:24
see you
16:26
Turtle camouflage but I see you
16:44
just hiding over there in the shade I
16:44
don't blame you sun gets hot out
16:47
here you're having a little nice little
16:50
little perch
16:51
there to relax on
16:59
Turtle yep all right I'll see you later
16:59
Turtle see you later there's a lot of
17:01
turtles in here oh my gosh there's a lot
17:03
of them this is cool look at all these
17:11
Turtles hey
17:11
fellas
17:18
hey oh that wasp just just going after
17:18
that get away from that get away from
17:20
that Turtle wasp get out of there get
17:21
out of there
17:23
wasp maybe that was a dragonfly I
17:25
couldn't tell trying to make out with
17:27
the turtle
17:36
and this is cool they're just swimming
17:36
around really clear view of turtles just
17:39
swimming in the in the pond
17:42
here I know it seems like nothing much
17:45
but it's not something you see too often
17:47
usually when you see turtles they're
17:48
like a little bit of algae on top of the
17:51
water you can't clearly see them like
17:53
this look hello
18:00
there I love
18:00
it watch out for them wasps down there
18:04
Turtle there's a bunch of them there's
18:06
two here couple more over here look at
18:09
this oh there's a little baby one a
18:12
little
18:34
it's like an onslaught of freaking
18:34
Turtles it's a turtle
18:57
happy all right I'm going to get going
18:57
turtles have fun
18:59
it is a dragonfly it is a dragonfly just
19:01
came back by get out of here dragonfly
19:03
get out of
19:10
here I don't know if I've ever seen
19:10
anything like this look how many turtles
19:12
there are in here I mean this dozens of
19:16
turtles dozens of
19:19
them they live under the dock
19:30
here an unexpected treat seeing you all
19:30
unexpected treat and I love
19:43
it never have I seen anything quite like
19:45
never usually it's fish you'll see
19:47
congregating like this not
20:15
close
20:15
squ Adam the Woo's Wild
20:19
Kingdom there a pigeon over
20:22
here squirrel right here I saw some
20:25
turtles saw fish
20:39
beautiful it's like an array of pigeons
20:39
all these
20:44
pigeons there a gentleman back there
20:44
sitting on the bench overlooking
20:46
the the
20:48
water just looking at the pigeons
20:50
looking at the squirrel smoking a big
20:52
stogy a big uh
20:54
cigar just having himself a day relaxing
20:58
that's the life right there working a
21:01
stove looking at the waterfront and
21:02
sitting in the
21:03
shade talking to some
21:10
pigeons pretty dang
21:10
nice I like that little little park
21:12
there all right I ended up looking for a
21:14
local coffee shop place and I found a
21:18
local coffee shop place place by the
21:20
name of Kos
21:23
C Kos coffee a
21:26
little one packet of the
21:29
I don't call it real sugar it's that
21:31
granulated sugar how do com by it's the
21:34
uh it's not like the regular white sugar
21:36
it's whatever you kind of go to some of
21:39
the new school coffee place coffee shop
21:41
places and I've noticed that some of the
21:44
newer coffee places the ones that you
21:46
have to either say I want to go inside
21:49
or outside yes you want you want this to
21:50
go I it to go I'll take the largest you
21:52
got it goes we only have one size and
21:53
it's it's this size kind of wish some
21:56
places had larger cup one thing I will
21:58
say about Starbucks they do have large
22:06
coffees however this is some dang tasty
22:06
coffee this is just regular drip coffee
22:08
this is really really good and maybe the
22:11
hottest cup of coffee I've had in the
22:12
last month this thing is like
22:13
scorchingly hot I took a sip and my
22:15
innards from my chest down to my belly
22:18
were on fire just the way I like it
22:20
piping hot good job cost I just get some
22:24
larger cups
22:50
here oh I see a little placard over
22:50
there too dedicated in December of
22:53
2020 Independent Square
23:11
45 fire rescue in Florida was
23:11
established in
23:12
1926 this the plaque was dedicated in
23:16
2012 fire trucks would be right behind
23:28
there wa the fire rescue Department
23:28
station 45 says it right there on the
23:30
sign also downtown maand come together
23:32
that's the
23:33
banner nice little fire station can
23:36
always tell when something's a fire
23:38
station just the way it
23:45
looks it's definitely a newer building
23:45
than some of the older style but same
23:47
kind of format architecture-- wise
23:50
here's the mland public library right
23:52
there cute little building flag out
23:55
front and everything
23:58
always like looking at the clouds here
24:01
as they formulate that one's starting to
24:03
get a little darker so might get some
24:05
rain as the day goes
24:07
on can always see things in the
24:10
clouds that kind of looks like a face
24:12
you put like a little eye on it and a
24:14
little tongue slithering out like a fish
24:16
opening its mouth to swallow something
24:45
uh sounds like the fire department is
24:45
being utilized a couple blocks it's
24:47
where I parked over here by the library
24:49
I can hear the sirens on now
25:15
Services it's going to get loud hold
25:15
your
25:26
ears nope that was Fire Department fire
25:26
department rescue
25:38
all right downtown Orlando now was going
25:38
down I4 and notice that the Mayor Bob
25:42
Carr the Bob Car Center I believe it's
25:46
called it's named after Mayor Bob
25:48
Carr where Elvis performed way back in
25:51
the day last time I was here was with my
25:53
buddy world and Micah we came by here
25:55
we're talking about how Elvis performed
25:57
here and since we were
26:00
here they have put up a fence this place
26:03
hasn't been open for a while and now
26:05
they don't want anyone walking any
26:07
closer than this they put this fence up
26:10
all around the property here at the Bob
26:12
car Performing Art
26:16
Center
26:17
interesting it's probably not looking
26:19
good for this place reopening then
26:39
got I4 going by there at a rapid
26:39
Pace off in the distance part of the
26:42
city skyline of downtown
26:49
orando so years ago this little glass
26:49
partition was not here and inside you
26:52
can see the old portion of the Mayor Bob
26:56
car
26:57
theater right through there kind of see
26:59
it I kind of peek in there and look it
27:01
was a little more difficult to see
27:02
through the glass than I was expecting
27:03
because of the angle of the
27:21
it that's the best thing I could do I
27:21
got my hand cued over it so you don't
27:23
get the glare as much but that's the
27:24
original front of the building before
27:26
the glass partition
27:29
was built in front of it like this look
27:31
at this thing the swan shuttle look at
27:34
this thing this thing is cool look at
27:36
this is there a driver in there no
27:39
there's no
27:40
driver there's no freaking
27:49
driver I think there's just passengers I
27:49
don't even know if there's a driver in
27:50
that thing the swan shuttle by
28:01
beep wow wow technology advancement
28:01
there it is right there the swan shuttle
28:03
doing a U-turn now you know what there
28:05
is someone in it maybe there is someone
28:06
driving it I'm confused I'm facing
28:09
backwards though back on I4 now I
28:12
figured I'll swing in to where off the
28:15
off-ramp where the former holyland
28:18
experience used to be they've all they
28:20
bulldozed all of it do a little update
28:23
on what they are building here an advent
28:24
Health Hospital complex
28:28
and all holy land's been leveled months
28:31
ago what a difference a few months makes
28:34
put the new sign over there removed all
28:37
the big walls here construction still
28:40
happening but they have made us so much
28:42
progress every single building from that
28:46
former theme park is gone and completely
28:49
new buildings are being
28:52
constructed coming up fast
28:54
change when it starts happening moves
28:57
quickly it's s empty for a long
29:04
time pretty
29:04
wild I covered it in in expansive great
29:12
detail but it is kind of neat to drive
29:12
by now that they're building the new
29:26
place and since I'm kind of in the same
29:26
general area heading back over over
29:28
towards celebration down I4 pulled over
29:31
where the former mystery fun house used
29:33
to be another place I covered in great
29:35
detail caught it out as it was closing
29:38
went in when was empty did
29:41
follow-ups years later when it just sat
29:43
here kind of decrepit and falling apart
29:46
and now the
29:48
apartments where mystery funh house used
29:50
to be are almost done they're almost
29:53
completed and the only real Landmark
29:56
that still looks the same is this silver
30:00
sculpture back here it's around the
30:02
back where it used to
30:05
be ah
30:11
progress so interesting how something
30:12
will just sit for so long and you think
30:14
this is going to be here forever sitting
30:15
empty then one day it's torn down then a
30:18
few months later this and since I'm on
30:20
an update kick I'll go over here to this
30:22
area of Celebration back in town now
30:25
Island
30:26
village see if anything has developed
30:29
the last couple months since I've been
30:31
over to this section of town far end of
30:40
town such a floor is just growing by
30:40
Leaps and Bounds celebration
30:43
included there a whole new section over
30:45
here done a couple food reviews from
30:48
those chairs before been a few months
30:54
ago kind of surprised there's no
30:54
businesses yet underneath here so you
30:56
got some apartments up to top there
30:58
or condos and then you got some retail
31:01
space which I would have assumed there
31:03
would have been some stores in here
31:04
already looks like they're ready to roll
31:07
but nothing's popped in here yet oh here
31:10
we go there's going to be a there we
31:12
opening this fall scoop homemade ice
31:15
cream I guess that might be the first
31:17
business to pop in over here that's
31:20
exciting to come back over and check
31:22
that out there's a kill winds on Market
31:24
Street downtown celebration this is
31:27
going to be like a second secondary
31:28
downtown couple well probably 3 miles
31:31
away from the original downtown H 3 or 4
31:35
miles about probably 3 miles 2 and 1
31:38
half 3 miles I don't know something like
31:44
that think last time I came by here
31:44
there was no floor in this
31:46
place see if it's changed at
32:09
now it's warm out Adam the Woo's Wild
32:09
Kingdom seen some birds well animals
32:13
today I'm looking at Birds that's why I
32:14
was thinking Birds but I've seen a lot
32:15
of animals today
32:39

32:39
