0:10 the great seal of california we were at
0:14 pier 39 pier 39 the other day we saw is
0:17 that a dog or a seal like can i do a
0:19 seal
0:19 they kind of make the same kind of noise
0:21 yeah here 39 we are still in san
0:23 francisco as a recording of this
0:25 it is friday august 6th it's like our
0:28 warmest day here it is warm
0:30 i could have probably done without the
0:31 jacket also i purchased this shirt i'm
0:34 wearing an
0:34 appropriate the city shirt this is kind
0:37 of the textbook
0:39 shirt if you will as you were saying
0:40 yeah that's the time we found one
0:42 it is friday august 6th correct yes
0:45 friday august 6th
0:46 directly above us is the great seal
0:50 i almost said the great steel you have
0:52 found uh
0:53 you have found a little ledge there to
0:55 tower over me
0:57 once again this is a very impressive
1:00 building
1:00 behind us piping hot caffeinated
1:03 beverage from both
1:04 our parts is acquired fear not because
1:07 the great seal is still right up there
1:10 just had to shift angles the great seal
1:12 so today what's the game plan
1:15 uh randomness randomness we're just
1:17 going to kind of roam around do
1:19 everything
1:20 on a whim no we have been going pretty
1:23 intent
1:24 around the city lots of we have i have a
1:28 lot of plans i documented a lot of
1:29 things that was on my agenda now there
1:31 really is no agenda
1:32 we're just going to stay open leaving
1:34 the day open
1:35 got to kind of let you kind of guide
1:37 this in a lot of ways there's a couple
1:39 places i want to see
1:40 but for the most part just show me
1:41 around your former
1:44 neighborhood if you will the tenderloin
1:47 we're starting in the tenderloin yeah
1:49 we're gonna be going into a lot of other
1:50 areas this is a long-winded intro i'm
1:52 inviting you to join me
1:54 and natalie shall you
1:57 first up gonna go to a very impressive
1:59 staircase
2:00 right up here at the forefront of the
2:03 city hall
2:04 used in the one of the closing sequence
2:08 of raiders of the lost ark one of my
2:10 favorite movies
2:12 indiana jones it's right up here inside
2:15 now
2:16 this is so
2:19 freaking cool marion and indy walking
2:23 down this very staircase
2:25 was supposed to be in washington dc of
2:26 course the whole movie was filmed
2:28 not in san francisco only this one
2:30 particular scene
2:32 but what an incredible ornate building
2:36 look up top there wow that's the the
2:38 dome you see from outside
2:50 this staircase belongs in a museum just
2:50 to give a little perspective
2:51 standing right there in the middle so if
2:54 you look from here
2:55 right there that's the spot
3:05 pretty dang cool
3:24 cool back outside now
3:24 noticing abraham
3:27 lincoln here
4:01 doing a little pondering in this chair
4:01 this is the bill graham auditorium or
4:04 well it's bill graham who is named after
4:08 it's a concert hall did i get that right
4:10 bill graham
4:11 bill graham yeah you've been to a couple
4:13 of couple shows here
4:14 yeah it was my first time seeing jack
4:15 white there so what year was what year
4:18 was that
4:19 oh 2013 or 2014. it was a lazzaretto
4:22 tour
4:27 the first of many times first versus
4:27 very many times all happened right here
4:31 so that was after the white stripe days
4:33 officially in 2011
4:35 and then so you never saw white stripes
4:37 never got to see them live
4:39 i am in 2009 and then you got to meet
4:43 jack white when he was a wrecking
4:44 tourism
4:44 at amoeba yeah we both went to the
4:46 amoeba show the amoeba and hollywood
4:48 show
4:48 yeah he was signing you got to meet him
4:50 too that's true this really is a
4:51 beautiful area it's interesting going
4:53 back to the raiders of the lost ark
4:55 you know location in there which was
4:56 supposed to be in washington dc
4:58 fictionally but this whole little
5:00 courtyard kind of gives me a dc vibe of
5:03 the mall
5:04 in dc i don't know just like
5:07 that's kind of what i think when i'm
5:08 like walking through here so i get it
5:10 got the steam exuding up from the
5:12 manhole there
5:15 always nice to see some steam going up
5:18 from the sewers
5:20 it is now 11 45 15 minutes prior
5:24 to this establishment on the corner of
5:26 geary
5:27 tommy tommy's joint sandwiches
5:31 and cocktails it says great
5:34 big beautiful sandwiches
5:39 are you waiting in line there's already
5:40 a few people in line
5:42 we're just waiting for the doors to open
5:45 yeah you recommended this yeah you've
5:47 eaten here quite a few times
5:49 i used to live just like five blocks
5:50 that way so
5:53 tommy's joint
5:57 you know it's got to be good if there's
5:58 already a queue starting to formulate
6:00 15 minutes prior to it opening
6:03 yeah i can't wait
6:39 it should also be noted they are cash
6:39 only
6:40 have an atm inside just in case
6:48 definitely a cool vibe in here with
6:50 everything along not only along the the
6:51 pillars that are kind of holding the
6:53 place together
6:54 but also along the the rooftop
6:57 everything just kind of dangling around
6:58 this place the walls could talk
7:00 can definitely tell some stories through
7:02 here
7:03 and it is the way it's set up is
7:05 cafeteria style where you go in
7:08 get your food you go up and ask what you
7:09 tell them what you want they cut off the
7:11 meat
7:11 give you the sides and then you pay at
7:13 the end and find your seat
7:15 once you reach your seat you end up
7:17 getting a booth here on the first level
7:19 kind of close to where the cafeteria
7:21 style end is where you where you pay is
7:23 cash only
7:25 and we ended up getting a booth right
7:26 next to this i went with a sliced turkey
7:28 mashed potatoes and gravy a little uh
7:30 what do they call that uh not
7:32 dumplings they call that stuffing over
7:34 to the side and potato salad which i've
7:36 already kind of
7:37 already kind of started to to tackle
7:40 what it was
7:41 on this plate it is really good
7:42 everything i've had already is so good
7:43 what'd you end up getting
7:44 i always get their brisket with the
7:46 brisket that's your go-to
7:48 yeah you said anthony bourdain was here
7:50 one time
7:51 i think um guy fieri food network
7:54 episodes have been here i could see why
7:56 so far i just only had a few bites it's
7:58 already already really good
8:13 gotta say that was pretty dang good it
8:13 was a good suggestion
8:15 uh yeah i loved it i am very full tried
8:18 to save the best for last
8:19 the best you said that was one of the
8:20 places you really wanted uh
8:22 to show me yeah when i was making a list
8:24 of things that was the number one eatery
8:26 the number one now we got to go work off
8:28 the food and take a little walk yeah
8:29 let's walk made it now over to japan
8:32 town
8:34 kind of a little shopping area down that
8:35 way
8:37 and the structure here located in this
8:40 park
8:54 i ended up going with a mocha boba
8:54 says bubble tea every day right there on
8:57 the side one with a
8:58 tapioca mocha
9:01 bobal bubba wait bubble tea
9:05 which has the boba the boba in the
9:08 bottom of it
9:09 you know with a specialty item oh that
9:12 was like an ice cream cone
9:14 yeah i'm not a huge dessert person but
9:16 their crepes are so good
9:18 like if you use japan okay i've always
9:21 had to only have the crepes where it's
9:22 like like flat almost like a pancake
9:24 would be
9:25 along the ground that's like an ice
9:27 cream cone style yeah it's all rolled
9:29 inside
9:29 and they probably don't face
9:37 oh my gosh it's like is it a panda bear
9:37 i think so it's a bear it looks like a
9:39 little bear
9:40 that's so cute it has a little pretzel
9:41 on top and like so
9:43 fruit loops for ears yeah if you ever
9:46 come to japan town
9:47 it's in the west
9:58 got the oversized straw that you kind of
9:58 jab
9:59 down in the top so it doesn't spill out
10:32 trying to figure out what kind of animal
10:32 this is
10:39 any guesses it's kind of like a panda in
10:39 a way
10:40 do not feed the pigeons you see any shoe
10:47 so basically the opposite of what i
10:50 learned by watching mary poppins
10:52 looking for food pigeon best of luck
10:56 best of luck out here walked about three
10:58 quarters of a mile
11:00 to this direction and you can see the
11:03 bay over there and look at the
11:05 dissension here
11:07 on this everyone's parked sideways not
11:10 going down that hill we walked up a
11:11 couple hills but nothing as steep as
11:13 this
11:14 we're going two more blocks that way
11:16 we're a block and a half
11:18 to the mrs dow firehouse which is just
11:20 on the next corner or so
11:22 this gives a little better perspective
11:24 on the angle of the road with the cars
11:26 down
11:27 if you look closely over there in the
11:28 bay there's alcatraz
11:30 i was there yesterday
11:37 definitely get your exercise walking up
11:37 and down these hills
11:39 i've noticed this whole time i've been
11:40 in san francisco i've seen these cars
11:42 driving around
11:43 i don't know what they're for but maybe
11:45 like a street future
11:46 street view is being recorded with them
11:49 right here on the corner
11:50 of steiner and broadway
11:55 is the screen used home from the movie
11:58 starring robin williams on this very
12:02 steep incline
12:11 this is doubtfire on the stairs they do
12:11 have a fence up you cannot go up and
12:13 take a picture
12:15 and walk up the concrete stairs
12:20 this is the first time i've ever been to
12:20 this spot
12:22 i'm noticing the trees i'd always heard
12:25 that the trees would have carvings
12:34 honoring robin all along
12:34 people would carve their names into the
12:37 side
12:38 of the branches here you can see all
12:42 through here
12:44 some over the years many many years
12:46 people inscribing their thoughts
12:49 can't even imagine how many people a day
12:52 will walk by here oh check it out right
12:56 up there
12:56 just on their steps
13:26 all up in the tree i would imagine it
13:26 goes all the way down the trunk but they
13:28 put the
13:28 iv around them
14:03 oh
14:03 and rob williams looked pretty pretty
14:05 close to san francisco
14:07 just across the bridge
14:10 not the bay bridge the golden gate
14:11 bridge right yeah actually went by his
14:14 house about a week before he passed
14:17 sausalito
14:30 news
14:31 what a view here from this from this
14:33 filming with shreen used home
14:36 filming locations down that hill to the
14:39 bay
14:39 even when you're watching the movie you
14:40 can really tell how steep these roads
14:42 are
14:43 i think they appear more steep in real
14:45 life walking up your legs feel them more
14:48 than watching them on the movie screen
15:18 all right moving on one last look there
15:18 at the house this would be a great view
15:19 to to own this home would be pretty
15:21 amazing
15:22 any of these homes around here would be
15:24 amazing yeah good view of the bay
15:29 standing here on this corner though i'm
15:29 a little bit worried maybe someone will
15:32 throw throw some fruit at us it's a
15:34 drive-by fruiting
15:35 it's kind of interesting to see kind of
15:37 old-timey house there wedged in between
15:40 i don't want to say newer but more
15:41 recent than the home is
15:43 kind of condos apartments next to it
15:47 kind of wedged in the middle of the two
15:49 oh there's an out of the closet thrift
15:50 store here on the corner of polk and
15:53 california reminds me of the one that
15:54 used to be in hollywood next to
15:56 nickelodeon on sunset nickelodeon sunset
15:59 closed
16:00 and the out of the closet was bulldozed
16:02 and now there's an apartment complex but
16:05 next to the one
16:06 this thrift store that used to be in
16:07 hollywood used to be a taco stand i used
16:09 to frequent a lot
16:10 some of the best street tacos i've ever
16:12 had and i used to go in the thrift store
16:14 all the time and buy a few things
16:15 pretty neat they still got him here in
16:16 san francisco and we're gonna follow the
16:18 trolley route
16:20 up to grace cathedral which we were at
16:22 the other day but it was closed off
16:24 hoping that grace cathedral will be open
16:27 and be able to peek in and look at the
16:28 stained glass inside the church
17:01 dang we're two for two are trying to get
17:01 into grace cathedral
17:10 i know right look at these doors wow
17:10 look at that all the carvings here
17:13 it's the front doors of the cathedral
17:22 even a nice little view from the front
17:22 steps
17:24 been doing a lot of walking taking a
17:25 little break on one of these benches
17:28 yeah the stained glass on the side of
17:31 this cathedral is something else
17:34 it really is
17:51 dr martin luther king spoke here
17:54 preached a sermon in 1965 didn't realize
17:56 that i saw some information there on the
17:58 front of the church
18:05 this is the fairmount hotel
18:05 very monumental looking building this is
18:07 a
18:08 mason ave also known as tony bennett
18:12 way where
18:15 oh okay tony bennett has
18:19 he has been honored a little homage to
18:21 the man himself right here
18:23 tony that's right he left his heart in
18:27 san
18:28 francisco debut 1961 the fairmount hotel
18:31 tony bennett must have performed here in
18:34 61.
18:35 also should point out from from this
18:37 little
18:38 from this angle you can see part of the
18:40 bay bridge there off in the distance
18:41 just uh one of the pillars of the bay
18:42 bridge
18:44 next to the hotel now right here on the
18:46 corner of powell and california notice
18:48 there's that little
18:49 traffic light station over there and
18:52 this is one of the only spots well as
18:54 far as i know the only spot where the
18:56 cable cars
18:57 cross over there are only two streets
18:59 where the cable cars go by
19:01 that's am i am i saying that correctly
19:03 this is a spot where they intersect
19:05 california and powell
19:10 i wonder what that is over there across
19:10 the way so looking down you can see the
19:12 cable cars go down this road
19:15 down powell and then down and up
19:24 california
19:24 going across number 16 howell
19:28 and hyde street
19:34 that's where it picks up right powell
19:34 and hyde
19:48 they have quite an incline going down oh
19:48 they're stopping right here in the
19:49 middle of the road
19:52 they're pointing something out
19:57 there we go see let's go with a break
19:57 this is so dang cool
20:00 and then down wow look at this incline
20:06 holy cow the guy on the back hits the
20:09 brakes
20:10 it's pretty fascinating how all that
20:12 works you're holding on to your hat
20:13 not because of the wind but how exciting
20:15 the cable car mechanisms are
20:19 i can't believe you haven't ridden on
20:20 the cable car until we did it the other
20:22 day
20:23 i mean spend eight dollars for
20:25 transportation just to go
20:27 i almost just slipped on this but right
20:28 now they're free right now i've been on
20:30 them a couple times and i can say
20:32 i kind of got my fill i kind of did it
21:07 that coit tower over there how do you
21:07 spell that c-o-i-t
21:10 coit tower really shows up here on the
21:12 perspective of
21:14 the video but this is really inclined
21:16 going down i'm going to kind of hold it
21:18 at a normal level and then i'm just
21:20 going to shift this way
21:22 and you can see just how tilted the road
21:25 is
21:25 with the tower over there in the
21:27 distance looking i can tell the brick
21:29 down on that side
21:30 yeah good point if you've ever seen the
21:33 film the towering inferno
21:36 this were this was the exteriors
21:40 from that movie 555.
21:46 there was even a scene right here in
21:46 front when fred astaire
21:50 exits his vehicle
21:58 fred upstairs okay very well done
21:58 a stairs that fred walked up
22:02 and into this building an all-star cast
22:09 one of the 70s disaster movies there was
22:09 a lot of them
22:11 in that decade decided to go ahead and
22:13 catch this trolley because we're going
22:14 to go back
22:15 uphill up california to one last spot
22:41 yesterday
23:45 trying to get up to the basketball court
23:45 it's on the second level here
23:48 it's all fenced off and locked up
23:49 there's no one in there
23:52 said to go up to the front door which we
23:54 thought was this
23:55 no one's answering but right up here
23:59 quite a few things including the
24:00 princess diaries had a
24:03 a scene where one of the students
24:05 slipped and fell was kind of almost like
24:07 it was almost like a it was an error it
24:09 was a slip up that was left in the movie
24:12 they left it in and i know it from
24:15 pursuit of happiness when will smith is
24:16 talking to his son
24:18 giving a little inspiration quote about
24:21 telling him that don't let anyone ever
24:22 tell you
24:23 you can't do something especially him
24:28 if you have a dream you got to go for it
24:31 and overlooking
24:32 from up there if there was the ability
24:34 to get up there
24:35 you'd see the cityscape off in the
24:38 distance
24:40 it's a little bit of a bummer can't get
24:41 up there because that's that would be
24:43 pretty amazing but that's the basketball
24:45 court from pursuit of happiness
24:47 among other productions right here down
24:49 this alley
24:51 i totally forgot all about it and we
24:53 were a couple blocks over that way and
24:56 natalie remembered we walked over here
24:58 yeah we were so close here we're like
25:00 three blocks over
25:01 but at least we can see it you can see
25:03 it from down here
25:04 oh there's someone right there let's
25:06 maybe ask them all right we were
25:08 directed around to the front of the
25:10 knocked on the door someone came out we
25:12 asked if we could go get a picture
25:14 and they said no he said we are not they
25:15 are we are not the first ones
25:17 to show up here and try to get a picture
25:19 up there but at least we tried
25:22 it's a possibility yeah it is is it it
25:25 is an active building
25:27 so what happened is one thing i learned
25:29 is they told us
25:30 no even though in pursuit of happiness
25:32 will smith said
25:33 don't ever let anyone tell you you can't
25:36 do something
25:37 i was just told i can't do something
25:40 dang it will smith
25:45 okay this is good i'm kind of getting a
25:46 side angle and that's where will smith
25:49 and his son were kind of looking over
25:50 off to the side
25:51 i was always under the impression that
25:53 it was on top of a skyscraper
25:55 but in reality it's it's street view
25:57 it's just the the way san francisco is
25:59 set up with the elevation of the streets
26:02 looking down in the city it appears as
26:03 if they're on top of a huge building but
26:05 really it's only
26:06 second floor up wild maybe magic
26:10 well i guess city magic city magic oh
26:12 yeah real quick like i just wanted to
26:13 show the screen gap grab there
26:16 yeah take a look at this you would never
26:17 expect that to be two floors up from
26:19 ground level
26:20 that is incredible i always assume that
26:22 was on top of a skyrise
26:24 building but it's not it's right there
26:26 that little basketball court
26:28 san francisco streets are they fool you
26:31 a bit
26:51 i know you're pretty familiar with the
26:51 streets of this area
26:52 and since i've been here
26:56 i'm getting pretty familiar with the
26:57 streets too these pigeons
27:05 i'll see you the next video the vlog oh
27:05 watch out pigeons watch out
27:08 the vlog
